We cover some useful techniques in computational aspects of analytic number theory, with specific emphasis on ideas relevant to the evaluation of L-functions. These techniques overlap considerably with basic methods from analytic number theory. On the elementary side, summation by parts, Euler Maclaurin summation, and Mobius inversion play a prominent role. In the slightly less elementary sphere, we find tools from analysis, such as Poisson summation, generating function methods, Cauchy's residue theorem, asymptotic methods, and the fast Fourier transform. We then describe conjectures and experiments that connect number theory and random matrix theory.
In this paper, we shall prove, for any $m\geq 1$, the existence of an uncountable subset of $U$-numbers of type $\leq m$ (which we called the set of {\it $m$-ultra numbers}) for which there exists uncountably many transcendental analytic functions mapping it into Liouville numbers.
In this paper we study that the $q$-Euler numbers and polynomials are analytically continued to $E_q(s)$. A new formula for the Euler's $q$-Zeta function $ζ_{E,q}(s)$ in terms of nested series of $ζ_{E,q}(n)$ is derived. Finally we introduce the new concept of the dynamics of analytically continued $q$-Euler numbers and polynomials.
The parity of the analytic rank of an elliptic curve is given by the root number in the functional equation L(E,s). Fixing an elliptic curve over any number field and considering the family of its quadratic twists, it is natural to ask what the average analytic rank in this family is. A lower bound on this number is given by the average root number. In this paper, we investigate the root number in such families and derive an asymptotic formula for the proportion of curves in the family that have even rank. Our results are then used to support a conjecture about the average analytic rank in thi…
In the present paper, we analyse analytic continuation of weighted q-Genocchi numbers and polynomials. A novel formula for weighted q-Genocchi- Zeta function ζG,q (s | α) in terms of nested series of ζG,q (n | α) is derived. Moreover, we introduce a novel concept of dynamics of the zeros of analytically continued weighted q-Genocchi polynomials.
We derive an analytic class number formula valid for an order in a product of $S$-integers in global fields, or equivalently for reduced finite-type affine schemes of pure dimension $1$ over $\mathbb{Z}$.
Let F/k be a finite abelian extension of global function fields, totally split at a distinguished place \infty. We prove that a complex Gras conjecture holds for a suitable group of Stark units, and we derive a refined analytic class number formula.
We interpret the "explicit formulas" in the sense of analytic number theory for the zeta function of an elliptic curve over a finite field as a transversal index theorem on a 3-dimensional laminated space.
We obtain an effective analytic formula, with explicit constants, for the number of distinct irreducible factors of a polynomial $f \in \mathbb{Z}[x]$. We use an explicit version of Mertens' theorem for number fields to estimate a related sum over rational primes. For a given $f \in \mathbb{Z}[x]$, our result yields a finite list of primes that certifies the number of distinct irreducible factors of $f$.
The modified Bessel functions $K_ν(z)$, or, for brevity, K-Bessel functions, arise at key places in analytic number theory. In particular, they appear in beautiful arithmetic identities. A survey of these arithmetical identities and their appearances in number theory is provided.
In this overview paper, presented at the meeting DANS14, Novi Sad, July3-7, 2014, we give some applications of Laplace transforms to analytic number theory. These include the classical circle and divisor problem, moments of $|ζ(1/2+it)|$, and a discussion of two functional equations connected to a work of Prof. Bogoljub Stanković.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$. Then, we show that the average analytic rank of $E$ over cyclic extensions of degree $l$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ with $l$ a prime not equal to $2$, is at most $2+r_{\mathbb{Q}}(E)$, where $r_{\mathbb{Q}}(E)$ is the analytic rank of the elliptic curve $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. This bound is independent of the degree $l$ Also, we also obtain some average analytic rank results over $S_d$-fields.
The lecture, given at the ICM 2014 in Seoul, explores several problems of analytic number theory in the context of function fields over a finite field, where they can be approached by methods different than those of traditional analytic number theory. The resulting theorems can be used to check existing conjectures over the integers, and to generate new ones. Among the problems discussed are: Counting primes in short intervals and in arithmetic progressions; Chowla's conjecture on the autocorrelation of the Mobius function; and the additive divisor problem.
Computer-based attempts to construct lower bounds for small Ramsey numbers are discussed. A systematic review of cyclic Ramsey graphs is attempted. Many known lower bounds are reproduced. Several new bounds are reported.
The aim of this paper is to prove conjectures concerning $p$-adic valuations of Stirling numbers of the second kind $S(n,k)$, $n,k\in\mathbb{N}_+$, stated by Amdeberhan, Manna and Moll and Berrizbeitia et al., where $p$ is a prime number. The proof is based on elementary facts from $p$-adic analysis.
Li showed that the Riemann Hypothesis is equivalent to the nonnegativity of a certain sequence of numbers. Bombieri and Lagarias gave an arithmetic formula for the number sequence based on the Guinand-Weil explicit formula and showed that Li's criterion is equivalent to Weil's criterion for the Riemann Hypothesis. We provide a derivation of the explicit formula based on Laplace transforms and present an alternative expression for Li's criterion that invites a probabilistic interpretation.
We give an informal introduction to the most basic techniques used to evaluate moments on the critical line of the Riemann zeta-function and to find asymptotics for sums of arithmetic functions.
We establish a prime number theorem for all uniquely ergodic, analytic skew products on the $2$-torus $\mathbb{T}^2$. More precisely, for every irrational $α$ and every $1$-periodic real analytic $g:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ of zero mean, let $T_{α,g} : \mathbb{T}^2 \rightarrow \mathbb{T}^2$ be defined by $(x,y) \mapsto (x+α,y+g(x))$. We prove that if $T_{α, g}$ is uniquely ergodic then, for every $(x,y) \in \mathbb{T}^2$, the sequence $\{T_{α, g}^p(x,y)\}$ is equidistributed on $\mathbb{T}^2$ as $p$ traverses prime numbers. This is the first example of a class of natural, non-algebraic and smo…
We study the asymptotic growth of Betti numbers in tower of finite covers and provide simple proofs of approximation results, which were previously obtained by Calegari-Emerton, in the generality of arbitrary p-adic analytic towers of covers. Further, we also obtain partial results about arbitrary pro-$p$ towers.
We consider the complexity of integer base expansions of algebraic irrational numbers from a computational point of view. We show that the Hartmanis--Stearns problem can be solved in a satisfactory way for the class of multistack machines. In this direction, our main result is that the base-$b$ expansion of an algebraic irrational real number cannot be generated by a deterministic pushdown automaton. We also confirm an old claim of Cobham proving that such numbers cannot be generated by a tag machine with dilation factor larger than one.
