Using the concept of s-formality we are able to extend the bounds of a Theorem of Miller and show that a compact k-connected 4k+3- or 4k+4-manifold with b_{k+1}=1 is formal. We study k connected n-manifolds, n= 4k+3, 4k+4, with a hard Lefschetz-like property and prove that in this case if b_{k+1}=2, then the manifold is formal, while, in 4k+3-dimensions, if b_{k+1}=3 all Massey products vanish. We finish with examples inspired by symplectic geometry and manifolds with special holonomy.
In this paper, we show that for a simply connected CW complex $Y$ with $H^{*}(Y;\mathbb{Q})$ of finite dimension, if $H^{*}(Y;\mathbb{Q})$ is concentrated in degrees $\leq 3$, then the rationalization $Y_\mathbb{Q}$ is formal. As an application, we show that the spatial realizations of simply connected Sullivan algebras with rational homology concentrated in degrees $\leq 3$ are formal.
We show that the isotropy action of a homogeneous space $G/K$, where $G$ and $K$ are compact, connected Lie groups and $K$ is defined by an automorphism on $G$, is equivariantly formal and that $(G, K)$ is a Cartan pair.
We classify simply connected rationally elliptic manifolds of dimension five and those of dimension six with small Betti numbers from the point of view of their rational cohomology structure. We also prove that a geometrically formal rationally elliptic six dimensional manifold, whose second Betti number is two, is rational cohomology $S^2\times {\mathbb C}P^2$. An infinite family of six-dimensional simply connected biquotients whose second Betti number is three, different from Totaro's biquotients, is considered and it is proved that none of biquotient from this family is geometrically formal…
We investigate some topological properties, in particular formality, of compact Sasakian manifolds. Answering some questions raised by Boyer and Galicki, we prove that all higher (than three) Massey products on any compact Sasakian manifold vanish. Hence, higher Massey products do obstruct Sasakian structures. Using this we produce a method of constructing simply connected K-contact non-Sasakian manifolds. On the other hand, for every $n \geq 3$, we exhibit the first examples of simply connected compact Sasakian manifolds of dimension $2n + 1$ which are non-formal. They are non-formal because …
We review topological properties of Kähler and symplectic manifolds, and of their odd-dimensional counterparts, coKähler and cosymplectic manifolds. We focus on formality, Lefschetz property and parity of Betti numbers, also distinguishing the simply-connected case (in the Kähler/symplectic situation) and the $b_1=1$ case (in the coKähler/cosymplectic situation).
We introduce a method to resolve a symplectic orbifold into a smooth symplectic manifold. Then we study how the formality and the Lefschetz property of the symplectic resolution are compared with that of the symplectic orbifold. We also study the formality of the symplectic blow-up of a symplectic orbifold along symplectic submanifolds disjoint from the orbifold singularities. This allows us to construct the first example of a simply connected compact symplectic manifold of dimension 8 which satisfies the Lefschetz property but is not formal, therefore giving a counter-example to a conjecture …
Let $X$ be a simply connected path connected topological space which is formal in the sense of rational homotopy theory. Let $Y=X\cup_α\mathbb{D}^{n}$ where $α:\mathbb{S}^{n-1}\to X$ is a non-torsion element. Then we obtain a condition on $α$ for the formality of $Y$. We give several illustrative examples concerning the formality of a finite CW complex having only even dimensional cells. This is the corrected version of the earlier version which contained a serious error in Theorem 1.4. This theorem, which now Theorem 1.1 of this version, has now been corrected. The proofs of Theorems 1.1, 1.2…
We introduce the concept of s-formal minimal model as an extension of formality. We prove that any orientable compact manifold M, of dimension 2n or (2n-1), is formal if and only if M is (n-1)-formal. The formality and the hard Lefschetz property are studied for the symplectic manifolds constructed by Donaldson with asymptotically holomorphic techniques. This study permits us to show an example of a Donaldson symplectic manifold of dimension eight which is formal simply connected and does not satisfy the hard Lefschetz theorem.
Formality is a topological property, defined in terms of Sullivan's model for a space. In the simply-connected setting, a space is formal if its rational homotopy type is determined by the rational cohomology ring. In the general setting, the weaker 1-formality property allows one to reconstruct the rational pro-unipotent completion of the fundamental group, solely from the cup products of degree 1 cohomology classes. In this note, we survey various facets of formality, with emphasis on the geometric and algebraic implications of 1-formality, and its relations to the cohomology jump loci and t…
Let $X$ be a nilpotent space such that there exists $p\geq 1$ with $H^p(X,\mathbb Q) \ne 0$ and $H^n(X,\mathbb Q)=0$ if $n>p$. Let $Y$ be a m-connected space with $m\geq p+1$ and $H^*(Y,\mathbb Q)$ is finitely generated as algebra. We assume that $X$ is formal and there exists $p$ odd such that $H^p(X,\mathbb Q) \ne 0$. We prove that if the space $\mathcal F(X,Y)$ of continuous maps from $X$ to $Y$ is formal, then $Y$ has the rational homotopy type of a product of Eilenberg Mac Lane spaces. At the opposite, we exhibit an example of a formal space $\mathcal F(S^2,Y)$ where $Y$ is not rationally…
Let X and Y be finite nilpotent CW complexes with dimension of X less than the connectivity of Y. Generalizing results of Vigué-Poirrier and Yamaguchi, we prove that the mapping space Map(X,Y) is rationally formal if and only if Y has the rational homotopy type of a finite product of odd dimensional spheres.
For a $2n+1$-dimensional compact Sasakian manifold, if $n\ge 2$, we prove that the analytic germ of the variety of representations of the fundamental group at every semi-simple representation is quadratic. To prove this result, we prove the almost-formality of de Rham complex of a Sasakian manifold with values in a semi-simple flat vector bundle. By the almost-formality, we also prove the vanishing theorem on the cup product of the cohomology of semi-simple flat vector bundles over a compact Sasakian manifold.
Let $X$ be a nilpotent space such that there exists $N\geq 1$ with $H^N(X,\mathbb Q) \ne 0$ and $H^n(X,\mathbb Q)=0$ if $n>N$. Let $Y$ be a m-connected space with $m\geq N+1$ and $H^*(Y,\mathbb Q)$ is finitely generated as algebra. We assume that the odd part of the rational Hurewicz homomorphism: $π_{odd}(X)\otimes \mathbb Q\to H_{odd}(X,\mathbb Q)$ is non-zero. We prove that if the space $\mathcal F(X,Y)$ of continuous maps from $X$ to $Y$ is rationally formal, then $Y$ has the rational homotopy type of a finite product of Eilenberg Mac Lane spaces. At the opposite, we exhibit an example of …
We characterise simply-connected biquotients which potentially admit metrics of holonomy G_2. We prove that there are at most three real homotopy types of rationally elliptic such manifolds---all of them being formal. In the course of this examination we classify rationally elliptic homotopy types and characterise 7-dimensional simply-connected biquotients from a rational point of view. Moreover, we also investigate further manifolds of special holonomy, like manifolds of holonomy Spin(7) or Sp(n)\Sp(1) in special situations provided by rational ellipticity or geometric formality.
Given a fibration over the circle, we relate the eigenspace decomposition of the algebraic monodromy, the homological finiteness properties of the fiber, and the formality properties of the total space. In the process, we prove a more general result about iterated group extensions. As an application, we obtain new criteria for formality of spaces, and 1-formality of groups, illustrated by bundle constructions and various examples from low-dimensional topology and singularity theory.
We calculate the homology of the free loop space of (n-1)-connected closed manifolds of dimension at most 3n-2 (n > 1), with the Chas-Sullivan loop product and loop bracket. Over a field of characteristic zero, we obtain an expression for the BV-operator. We also give explicit formulas for the Betti numbers, showing they grow exponentially. Our main tool is the connection between formality, coformality and Koszul algebras that was elucidated in earlier work by the first author.
Given a compact, connected Lie group $K$, we use principal $K$-bundles to construct manifolds with prescribed finite-dimensional algebraic models. Conversely, let $M$ be a compact, connected, smooth manifold which supports an almost free $K$-action. Under a partial formality assumption on the orbit space and a regularity assumption on the characteristic classes of the action, we describe an algebraic model for $M$ with commensurate finiteness and partial formality properties. The existence of such a model has various implications on the structure of the cohomology jump loci of $M$ and of the r…
We prove that the ordered configuration space of 4 or more points in the plane has a non-formal singular cochain algebra in characteristic two. This is proved by constructing an explicit non trivial obstruction class in the Hochschild cohomology of the cohomology ring of the configuration space, by means of the Barratt-Eccles-Smith simplicial model. We also show that if the number of points does not exceed its dimension, then an euclidean configuration space is intrinsically formal over any ring.
We introduce a rational homotopy invariant P of a topological space, which is a quintic tensor on the cohomology. For n > 1, formality of a closed (n-1)-connected manifold of dimension up to 5n-2 is equivalent to vanishing of P and the Bianchi-Massey tensor introduced by Crowley and the second author arXiv:1505.04184. We show also that elements of the group of closed simply-connected spin 8-manifolds with the cohomology of an r-fold connected sum of S^2 x S^6 are determined up to torsion by the value of P.
Let M be a smooth manifold and V a Euclidean space. Let Ebar(M,V) be the homotopy fiber of the map from Emb(M,V) to Imm(M,V). This paper is about the rational homology of Ebar(M,V). We study it by applying embedding calculus and orthogonal calculus to the bi-functor (M,V) |--> HQ /\Ebar(M,V)_+. Our main theorem states that if the dimension of V is more than twice the embedding dimension of M, the Taylor tower in the sense of orthogonal calculus (henceforward called ``the orthogonal tower'') of this functor splits as a product of its layers. Equivalently, the rational homology spectral sequence…
We use rational formality of configuration spaces and the bar construction to study the cohomology of the space of braids in dimension four or greater. We provide a diagram complex for braids and a quasi-isomorphism to the de Rham cochains on the space of braids. The quasi-isomorphism is given by a configuration space integral followed by Chen's iterated integrals. This extends results of Kohno and of Cohen and Gitler on the cohomology of the space of braids to a CDGA suitable for integration. We show that this integration is compatible with Bott-Taubes configuration space integrals for long l…
We prove the formality and the evenness of odd-degree Betti numbers for compact Kähler orbifolds, by adapting the classical proofs for Kähler manifolds. As a consequence, we obtain examples of symplectic orbifolds not admitting any Kähler orbifold structure. We also review the known examples of non-formal simply connected Sasakian manifolds, and produce an example of a non-formal quasi-regular Sasakian manifold with Betti numbers $b_1=0$ and $b_2\,> 1$.
\emph{Scalable spaces} are simply connected compact manifolds or finite complexes whose real cohomology algebra embeds in their algebra of (flat) differential forms. This is a rational homotopy invariant property and all scalable spaces are formal; indeed, scalability can be thought of as a metric version of formality. They are also characterized by particularly nice behavior from the point of view of quantitative homotopy theory. Among other results, we show that spaces which are formal but not scalable provide counterexamples to Gromov's long-standing conjecture on distortion in higher homot…
We study the formality of the mapping torus of an orientation-preserving diffeomorphism of a manifold. In particular, we give conditions under which a mapping torus has a non-zero Massey product. As an application we prove that there are non-formal compact co-symplectic manifolds of dimension $m$ and with first Betti number $b$ if and only if $m=3$ and $b \geq 2$, or $m \geq 5$ and $b \geq 1$. Explicit examples for each one of these cases are given.
We prove the validity over $\mathbb{R}$ of a commutative differential graded algebra model of configuration spaces for simply connected closed smooth manifolds, answering a conjecture of Lambrechts--Stanley. We get as a result that the real homotopy type of such configuration spaces only depends on the real homotopy type of the manifold. We moreover prove, if the dimension of the manifold is at least $4$, that our model is compatible with the action of the Fulton--MacPherson operad (weakly equivalent to the little disks operad) when the manifold is framed. We use this more precise result to ge…
The rational homotopy type of a differential graded algebra (DGA) can be represented by a family of tensors on its cohomology, which constitute an $A_\infty$-minimal model of this DGA. When only the cohomology is needed to determine the rational homotopy type, then the DGA is called formal. By a theorem of Miller, a compact $k$-connected manifold is formal if its dimension is not greater than $4k+2$. We expand this theorem and a result of Crowley-Nordström to prove that if the dimension of a compact $k$-connected manifold $N\leq (l+1)k+2$, then its de Rham complex has an $A_\infty$-minimal mod…
The cohomology jump loci of a space $X$ are of two basic types: the characteristic varieties, defined in terms of homology with coefficients in rank one local systems, and the resonance varieties, constructed from information encoded in either the cohomology ring, or an algebraic model for $X$. We explore here the geometry of these varieties and the delicate interplay between them in the context of closed, orientable 3-dimensional manifolds and link complements. The classical multivariable Alexander polynomial plays an important role in this analysis. As an application, we derive some conseque…
The class of special generic maps is a natural class of smooth maps containing Morse functions on spheres with exactly two singular points and canonical projections of unit spheres. We find new restrictions on such maps on $6$-dimensional or higher dimensional closed and simply-connected manifolds into ${\mathbb{R}}^5$. Spheres which are not diffeomorphic to unit spheres do not admit such maps whose codimensions are negative in considerable cases. They restrict the homeomorphism and the diffeomorphism types of the manifolds in general. On the other hands, some elementary manifolds admit specia…
7-dimensional closed and simply-connected manifolds have been attractive as central and explicit objects in algebraic topology and differential topology of higher dimensional closed and simply-connected manifolds, which were studied actively especially in the 1950s--60s. Attractive studies of the class of these $7$-dimensional manifolds were started by the discovery of so-called exotic spheres by Milnor. It has influenced on the understanding of higher dimensional closed and simply-connected manifolds via algebraic and abstract objects. Recently this class is studied via more concrete notions …
We prove the existence of a 2-dimensional nonaspherical simply connected cell-like Peano continuum (the space itself was constructed in one of our earlier papers). We also indicate some relations between this space and the well-known Griffiths' space from the 1950's.

We construct closed $(k-1)$-connected manifolds of dimensions $\ge 4k-1$ that possess non-trivial rational Massey triple products. We also construct examples of manifolds $M$ such that all the cup-products of elements of $H^k(M)$ vanish, while the group $H^{3k-1}(M;\Q)$ is generated by Massey products: such examples are useful for theory of systols.
Let P be a closed smooth (4j-2)-connected 8j-manifold. We complete Wilkens' classification of the manifolds P for j = 1,2 and give an alternative proof to Wall's classification of the manifolds for j > 2. The Hopf-invariant-one dimensions (j=1,2) are characteristed by the fact that the quadratic linking functions which classify may be inhomogeneous. Hence we also extend the classification of (homogeneous) quadratic linking forms on finite abelian groups (due to Nikulin) to the inhomogeneous case.
The aim of this paper is to classify simply connected 6-dimensional torus manifolds with vanishing odd degree cohomology. It is shown that there is a one-to-one correspondence between equivariant diffeomorphism types of these manifolds and 3-valent labelled graphs, called torus graphs introduced by Maeda-Masuda-Panov. Using this correspondence and combinatorial arguments, we prove that a simply connected 6-dimensional torus manifold with vanishing odd degree cohomology is equivariantly diffeomorphic to the 6-dimensional sphere or an equivariant connected sum of copies of 6-dimensional quasitor…
