Let $d > 1$, and let $(X,α)$ and $(Y,β)$ be two zero-entropy ${\mathbb{Z}}^d$-actions on compact abelian groups by $d$ commuting automorphisms. We show that if all lower rank subactions of $α$ and $β$ have completely positive entropy, then any measurable equivariant map from $X$ to $Y$ is an affine map. In particular, two such actions are measurably conjugate if and only if they are algebraically conjugate.
Assuming positive entropy we prove a measure rigidity theorem for higher rank actions on tori and solenoids by commuting automorphisms. We also apply this result to obtain a complete classification of disjointness and measurable factors for these actions.
In this paper we consider two-dimensional dissipative maps of the annulus which are small perturbations of one-dimensional critical circle maps. It has been shown earlier that such perturbations admit an attractor which is a non-smooth topolgical circle - a "critical" circle. We study conjugacies of the maps that admit such attractors and show that although the maps exhibit universality - they approach a certain normal form when looked at small scales - two maps in general can not be smoothly comjugate on their critical attractors. This result extends the paradigm of "universality but no rigid…
Let $\mathcal{F}$ and $\mathcal{K}$ be commuting $C^\infty$ diffeomorphisms of the cylinder $\mathbb{T}\times\mathbb{R}$ that are, respectively, close to $\mathcal{F}_0 (x, y)=(x+ω(y), y)$ and $T_α(x, y)=(x+α, y)$, where $ω(y)$ is non-degenerate and $α$ is Diophantine. Using the KAM iterative scheme for the group action we show that $\mathcal{F}$ and $\mathcal{K}$ are simultaneously $C^\infty$-linearizable if $\mathcal{F}$ has the intersection property (including the exact symplectic maps) and $\mathcal{K}$ satisfies a semi-conjugacy condition. We also provide examples showing necessity of the…
Let $X$ be a compact metrizable group and $Γ$ a countable group acting on $X$ by continuous group automorphisms. We give sufficient conditions under which the dynamical system $(X,Γ)$ is surjunctive, i.e., every injective continuous map $τ\colon X \to X$ commuting with the action of $Γ$ is surjective.
Suppose $G$ is a higher-rank connected semisimple Lie group with finite center and without compact factors. Let $\mathbb{G}=G$ or $\mathbb{G}=G\ltimes V$, where $V$ is a finite dimensional vector space $V$. For any unitary representation $(π,\mathcal{H})$ of $\GG$, we study the twisted cohomological equation $π(a)f-λf=g$ for partially hyperbolic element $a\in \mathbb{G}$ and $λ\in U(1)$, as well as the twisted cocycle equation $π(a_1)f-λ_1f=π(a_2)g-λ_2 g$ for commuting partially hyperbolic elements $a_1,\,a_2\in \mathbb{G}$. We characterize the obstructions to solving these equations, construc…
We prove that if a measure distal action $α$ of a countable group $Γ$ is weakly contained in a strongly ergodic probability measure preserving action $β$ of $Γ$, then $α$ is a factor of $β$. In particular, this applies when $α$ is a compact action. As a consequence, we show that the weak equivalence class of any strongly ergodic action completely remembers the weak isomorphism class of the maximal distal factor arising in the Furstenberg-Zimmer Structure Theorem.
Let BS(n_1,m_1) $\curvearrowright$ X_1 and BS(n_2,m_2) $\curvearrowright$ X_2 be two ergodic essentially free probability measure preserving actions of nonamenable Baumslag-Solitar groups whose canonical almost normal abelian subgroups act aperiodically. We prove that an isomorphism between the corresponding crossed product II_1 factors forces BS(n_1,m_1) $\cong$ BS(n_2,m_2) when |n_1| $\neq$ |m_1| and BS(n_1,m_1) $\cong$ BS(n_2,$\pm$m_2) when |n_1| = |m_1|. This improves an orbit equivalence rigidity result obtained by Houdayer and Raum.
We take the first steps towards a better understanding of continuous orbit equivalence, i.e., topological orbit equivalence with continuous cocycles. First, we characterise continuous orbit equivalence in terms of isomorphisms of C*-crossed products preserving Cartan subalgebras. This is the topological analogue of the classical result by Singer and Feldman-Moore in the measurable setting. Secondly, we turn to continuous orbit equivalence rigidity, i.e., the question whether for certain classes of topological dynamical systems, continuous orbit equivalence implies conjugacy. We show that this …
Let $G$ be a group. A function $l:G\rightarrow \lbrack 0,\infty )$ is called a length function if (1) $l(g^{n})=|n|l(g)$ for any $g\in G$ and $n\in \mathbb{Z};$ (2) $l(hgh^{-1})=l(g)$ for any $h,g\in G;$ and (3) $l(ab)\leq l(a)+l(b)$ for commuting elements $a,b.$ Such length functions exist in many branches of mathematics, mainly as stable word lengths, stable norms, smooth measure-theoretic entropy, translation lengths on $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ spaces and Gromov $δ$% -hyperbolic spaces, stable norms of quasi-cocycles, rotation numbers of circle homeomorphisms, dynamical degrees of birational maps …
