Let ζbe the intersection exponent of random walks in Z^3 and αbe a positive real number. We construct a stochastic process from a simple random walk by erasing loops of length at most N^α. We will prove that for α< \frac{1}{1+2ζ}, the limiting distribution is Gaussian. For α> 2 the limiting distribution will be shown to be equal to the limiting distribution of the loop erased walk.
The loop-erased random walk (LERW) in $ \Z^d, d \geq 2$, is obtained by erasing loops chronologically from simple random walk. In this paper we show the existence of the two-sided LERW which can be considered as the distribution of the LERW as seen by a point in the "middle" of the path.
These are notes based on a course that I gave at the University of Chicago in Fall 2016 on "Loop measures and the loop-erased random walk." This is not intended to be a comprehensive view but rather a personal selection of some key ideas including some recent results.
Let $β$ be the growth exponent of the loop-erased random walk (LERW) in three dimensions. We prove that the scaling limit of 3D LERW is $h$-Hölder continuous almost surely for all $h < 1/β$, while not $1/β$-Hölder continuous almost surely.
We prove that loop-erased random walks on finite pre-Sierpinski gaskets can be extended to the infinite pre-Sierpinski gasket by virtue of the `erasing-larger-loops-first' method, and obtain the asymptotic behavior of the walk as the number of steps increases, in particular, the displacement exponent and a law of the iterated logarithm.
In recent work we have shown that loop-erased random walk (LERW) connecting two boundary points of a domain converges to the chordal Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE(2)) in the sense of curves parametrized by Minkowski content. In this note we explain how to derive the analogous result for LERW from a boundary point to an interior point, converging towards radial SLE(2).
Let $M_{n}$ be the length (number of steps) of the loop-erasure of a simple random walk up to the first exit from a ball of radius $n$ centered at its starting point. It is shown in [18] that there exists $β\in (1, \frac{5}{3}]$ such that $E (M_{n} )$ is of order $n^β$ in 3 dimensions. In the present article, we show that the Hausdorff dimension of the scaling limit of the loop-erased random walk in 3 dimensions is equal to $β$ almost surely.
We show that the `erasing-larger-loops-first' (ELLF) method, which was first introduced for erasing loops from the simple random walk on the Sierpinski gasket, does work also for non-Markov random walks, in particular, self-repelling walks to construct a new family of self-avoiding walks on the Sierpinski gasket. The one-parameter family constructed in this method continuously connects the loop-erased random walk and a self-avoiding walk which has the same asymptotic behavior as the `standard' self-avoiding walk. We prove the existence of the scaling limit and study some path properties: The e…
The infinite two-sided loop-erased random walk (LERW) is a measure on infinite self-avoiding walks that can be viewed as giving the law of the `middle part' of an infinite LERW loop going through 0 and infinity. In this note we derive expressions for transition probabilities for this model in dimensions two and up. In the plane, the formula can be further expressed in terms of a Laplacian with signed weights acting on certain discrete harmonic functions at the tips of the walk, and taking a determinant. The discrete harmonic functions are closely related to a discrete version of the complex sq…
We consider uniform spanning tree (UST) in topological polygons with $2N$ marked points on the boundary with alternating boundary conditions. In [LPW21], the authors derive the scaling limit of the Peano curve in the UST. They are variants of SLE$_8$. In this article, we derive the scaling limit of the loop-erased random walk branch (LERW) in the UST. They are variants of SLE$_2$. The conclusion is a generalization of [HLW20,Theorem 1.6] where the authors derive the scaling limit of the LERW branch of UST when $N=2$. When $N=2$, the limiting law is SLE$_2(-1,-1; -1, -1)$. However, the limiting…
The determination of the Hausdorff dimension of the scaling limit of loop-erased random walk is closely related to the study of the one-point function of loop-erased random walk, i.e., the probability a loop-erased random walk passes through a given vertex. Recent work in the theoretical physics literature has investigated the Hausdorff dimension of loop-erased random walk in three dimensions by applying field theory techniques to study spin systems that heuristically encode the one-point function of loop-erased random walk. Inspired by this, we introduce two different spin systems whose corre…
In this work, we consider loop-erased random walk (LERW) in three dimensions and give an asymptotic estimate on the one-point function for LERW and the non-intersection probability of LERW and simple random walk in three dimensions for dyadic scales. These estimates will be crucial to the characterization of the convergence of LERW to its scaling limit in natural parametrization. As a step in the proof, we also obtain a coupling of two pairs of LERW and SRW with different starting points conditioned to avoid each other.
Loop-erased random walk, abbreviated LERW, is one of the most well-studied critical lattice models. It is the self-avoiding random walk one gets after erasing the loops from a simple random walk in order or alternatively by considering the branches in a uniformly chosen spanning tree. This paper proves that planar LERW parametrized by renormalized length converges in the lattice size scaling limit to SLE(2) parametrized by 5/4-dimensional Minkowski content. In doing this we also provide a method for proving similar convergence results for other models converging to SLE. Besides the main theore…
We revisit the convergence of loop-erased random walk, LERW, to SLE(2) when the curves are parametrized by capacity. We construct a coupling of the chordal version of LERW and chordal SLE(2) based on the Green's function for LERW as martingale observable and using an elementary discrete-time Loewner "difference" equation. This coupling is different than the ones previously considered in this context. Our recent work (arXiv:1603.05203) on the convergence of LERW parametrized by length to SLE(2) parameterized by Minkowski content uses specific features of the coupling constructed here.
Following the strategy proposed by Makarov and Smirnov in arXiv:0909.5377, we provide technical details for the proof of convergence of massive loop-erased random walks to the chordal mSLE(2) process. As no follow-up of arXiv:0909.5377 appeared since then, we believe that such a treatment might be of interest for the community. We do not require any regularity of the limiting planar domain $Ω$ near its degenerate prime ends $a$ and $b$ except that $(Ω^δ,a^δ,b^δ)$ are assumed to be `close discrete approximations' to $(Ω,a,b)$ near $a$ and $b$ in the sense of a recent work arXiv:1810.05608.
The loop-erased random walk (LERW) in $\mathbb{Z}^4$ is the process obtained by erasing loops chronologically for simple random walk. We prove that the escape probability of the LERW renormalized by $(\log n)^{\frac{1}{3}}$ converges almost surely and in $L^{p}$ for all $p>0$. Along the way, we extend previous results by the first author building on slowly recurrent sets. We provide two applications for the escape probability. We construct the two-sided LERW, and we construct a $\pm 1$ spin model coupled with the wired spanning forests on $\mathbb{Z}^4$ with the bi-Laplacian Gaussian field on …
We examine the mixing time for random walks on graphs. In particular we are interested on investigating graphs with bottlenecks. Furthermore, the cutoff phenomenon is examined.
We consider a random partition of the vertex set of an arbitrary graph that can be sampled using loop-erased random walks stopped at a random independent exponential time of parameter $q>0$, that we see as a tuning parameter. The related random blocks tend to cluster nodes visited by the random walk on time scale $1/q$. We explore the emerging macroscopic structure by analyzing 2-point correlations. To this aim, it is defined an interaction potential between pair of vertices, as the probability that they do not belong to the same block of the random partition. This interaction potential can be …
We introduce partial loop-erasing operators. We show that by applying a refinement sequence of partial loop-erasing operators to a finite Markov chain, we get a process equivalent to the chronological loop-erased Markov chain. As an application, we construct loop-erased random paths on bounded domains of resistance spaces as the weak limit of the loop erasure of the Markov chains on a sequence of finite sets approximating the space, and the limit is independent of the approximating sequences. The random paths we constructed are simple paths almost surely, and they can be viewed as the loop-era…
The sequence of the simple random walks on Hamming schemes $\{H(n, q)\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ has a cutoff phenomenon for each integer $q$ greater than or equal to $3$. In this paper, for the sequence of simple random walks on Hamming schemes $\{H(n, q)\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ with $q\geq 3$, we give a simple majorant and a sharp minorant function for total variance distances between transition distributions and stationary distributions.
We analyse a random walk on the ring of integers mod $n$, which at each time point can make an additive `step' or a multiplicative `jump'. When the probability of making a jump tends to zero as an appropriate power of $n$ we prove the existence of a total variation pre-cutoff for this walk. In addition, we show that the process obtained by subsampling our walk at jump times exhibits a true cutoff, with mixing time dependent on whether the step distribution has zero mean.
In this article, we consider products of random walks on finite groups with moderate growth and discuss their cutoffs in the total variation. Based on several comparison techniques, we are able to identify the total variation cutoff of discrete time lazy random walks with the Hellinger distance cutoff of continuous time random walks. Along with the cutoff criterion for Laplace transforms, we derive a series of equivalent conditions on the existence of cutoffs, including the existence of pre-cutoffs, Peres' product condition and a formula generated by the graph diameters. For illustration, we c…
It is well known that there are close connections between non-intersecting processes in one dimension and random matrices, based on the reflection principle. There is a generalisation of the reflection principle for more general (e.g. planar) processes, due to S. Fomin, in which the non-intersection condition is replaced by a condition involving loop-erased paths. In the context of independent Brownian motions in suitable planar domains, this also has close connections to random matrices. An example of this was first observed by Sato and Katori (Phys. Rev. E, 83, 2011). We present further exam…
