We construct a diagram D, indexed by a finite partially ordered set, of finite Boolean semilattices and (v,0,1)-embeddings, with top semilattice $2^4$, such that for any variety V of algebras, if D has a lifting, with respect to the congruence lattice functor, by algebras and homomorphisms in V, then there exists an algebra $U$ in V such that the congruence lattice of $U$ contains, as a 0,1-sublattice, the five-element modular nondistributive lattice $M_3$. In particular, V has an algebra whose congruence lattice is neither join- nor meet-semidistributive. Using earlier work of K.A. Kearnes and A.Szendrei, we also deduce that V has no nontrivial congruence lattice identity. In particular, there is no functor F from finite Boolean semilattices and (v,0,1)-embeddings to lattices and lattice embeddings such that the composition Con F is equivalent to the identity (where Con denotes the congruence lattice functor), thus solving negatively a problem raised by P. Pudlak in 1985 about the existence of a functorial solution of the Congruence Lattice Problem.
For an integer $n\geq 2$, let NCSL$(n)$ denote the set of sizes of congruence lattices of $n$-element semilattices. We find the four largest numbers belonging to NCSL$(n)$, provided that $n$ is large enough to ensure that $|$NCSL$(n)|\geq 4$. Furthermore, we describe the $n$-element semilattices witnessing these numbers.
We attach to each $\langle 0, \vee \rangle$-semilattice a graph $\boldsymbol{G}_{\boldsymbol{S}}$ whose vertices are join-irreducible elements of $\boldsymbol{S}$ and whose edges correspond to the reflexive dependency relation. We study properties of the graph $\boldsymbol{G}_{\boldsymbol{S}}$ both when $\boldsymbol{S}$ is a join-semilattice and when it is a lattice. We call a $\langle 0, \vee \rangle$-semilattice $\boldsymbol{S}$ particle provided that the set of its join-irreducible elements join-generates $\boldsymbol{S}$ and it satisfies DCC. We prove that the congruence lattice of a parti…
We show that for every quasivariety K of structures (where both functions and relations are allowed) there is a semilattice S with operators such that the lattice of quasi-equational theories of K (the dual of the lattice of sub-quasivarieties of K) is isomorphic to Con(S,+,0,F). As a consequence, new restrictions on the natural quasi-interior operator on lattices of quasi-equational theories are found.
Part I proved that for every quasivariety K of structures (which may have both operations and relations) there is a semilattice S with operators such that he lattice of quasi-equational theories of K (the dual of the lattice of sub-quasivarieties of K) is isomorphic to Con(S,+,0,F). It is known that if S is a join semilattice with 0 (and no operators), then there is a quasivariety Q such that the lattice of theories of Q is isomorphic to Con(S,+,0). We prove that if S is a semilattice having both 0 and 1 with a group G of operators acting on S, and each operator in G fixes both 0 and 1, then t…
By a completely inverse $AG^{**}$-groupoid we mean an inverse $AG^{**}$-groupoid $A$ satisfying the identity $xx^{-1}=x^{-1}x$, where $x^{-1}$ denotes a unique element of $A$ such that $x=(xx^{-1})x$ and $x^{-1}=(x^{-1}x)x^{-1}.$ We show that the set of all idempotents of such groupoid forms a semilattice and the Green's relations $\mathcal{H,L, R,D}$ and $\mathcal{J}$ coincide on $A$. The main result of this note says that any completely inverse $AG^{**}$-groupoid meets the famous Lallement's Lemma for regular semigroups. Finally, we show that the Green's relation $\mathcal{H}$ is both the le…
We show that a locally finite variety which omits abelian types is self-regulating if and only if it has a compatible semilattice term operation. Such varieties must have a type-set {5}. These varieties are residually small and, when they are finitely generated, they have definable principal congruences. We show that idempotent varieties with a compatible semilattice term operation have the congruence extension property.
For a class V of algebras, denote by Conc(V) the class of all semilattices isomorphic to the semilattice Conc(A) of all compact congruences of A, for some A in V. For classes V1 and V2 of algebras, we denote by crit(V1,V2) the smallest cardinality of a semilattice in Conc(V1) which is not in Conc(V2) if it exists, infinity otherwise. We prove a general theorem, with categorical flavor, that implies that for all finitely generated congruence-distributive varieties V1 and V2, crit(V1,V2) is either finite, or aleph_n for some natural number n, or infinity. We also find two finitely generated modu…
We investigate categorical and amalgamation properties of the functor Idc assigning to every partially ordered abelian group G its semilattice of compact ideals Idc G. Our main result is the following. Theorem 1. Every diagram of finite Boolean semilattices indexed by a finite dismantlable partially ordered set can be lifted, with respect to the Idc functor, by a diagram of pseudo-simplicial vector spaces. Pseudo-simplicial vector spaces are a special kind of finite-dimensional partially ordered vector spaces (over the rationals) with interpolation. The methods introduced make it also possible…
The Lifting Idempotent Property ($LIP$) of ideals in commutative rings inspired the study of Boolean lifting properties in the context of other concrete algebraic structures ($MV$-algebras, commutative l-groups, $BL$-algebras, bounded distributive lattices, residuated lattices, etc.), as well as for some types of universal algebras (C. Muresan and the author defined and studied the Congruence Boolean Lifting Property ($CBLP$) for congruence modular algebras). A lifting ideal of a ring $R$ is an ideal of $R$ fulfilling $LIP$. In a recent paper, Tarizadeh and Sharma obtained new results on liftin…
We denote by Conc(A) the semilattice of all finitely generated congruences of an (universal) algebra A, and we define Conc(V) as the class of all isomorphic copies of all Conc(A), for A in V, for any variety V of algebras. Let V and W be locally finite varieties of algebras such that for each finite algebra A in V there are, up to isomorphism, only finitely many B in W such that A and B have isomorphic congruence lattices, and every such B is finite. If Conc(V) is not contained in Conc(W), then there exists a semilattice of cardinality aleph 2 in Conc(V)-Conc(W). Our result extends to quasivar…
We construct a distributive algebraic lattice D that is not isomorphic to the congruence lattice of any lattice. This solves a long-standing open problem, traditionally attributed to R. P. Dilworth, from the forties. The lattice D has compact top element and aleph omega+1 compact elements. Our results extend to all algebras possessing a polynomially definable structure of a join-semilattice with a largest element.
We study connections between closure operators on an algebra $(A,\Om)$ and congruences on the extended power algebra defined on the same algebra. We use these connections to give an alternative description of the lattice of all subvarieties of semilattice ordered algebras.
The critical point between varieties A and B of algebras is defined as the least cardinality of the semilattice of compact congruences of a member of A but of no member of B, if it exists. The study of critical points gives rise to a whole array of problems, often involving lifting problems of either diagrams or objects, with respect to functors. These, in turn, involve problems that belong to infinite combinatorics. We survey some of the combinatorial problems and results thus encountered. The corresponding problematic is articulated around the notion of a k-ladder (for proving that a critica…
Let $S$ be a semigroup and $\mathbb F$ be a field. For an ideal $J$ of the semigroup algebra ${\mathbb F}[S]$ of $S$ over $\mathbb F$, let $\varrho _J$ denote the restriction (to $S$) of the congruence on ${\mathbb F}[S]$ defined by the ideal $J$. A semigroup $S$ is called a permutable semigroup if $α\circ β=β\circ α$ is satisfied for all congruences $α$ and $β$ of $S$. In this paper we show that if $S$ is a semilattice or a rectangular band then $φ_{\{S;{\mathbb F}\}}:\ J\mapsto \varrho _J$ is a homomorphism of the semigroup $(Con ({\mathbb F}[S]);\circ )$ into the relations semigroup $({\cal…
In ring theory, the lifting idempotent property (LIP) is related to some important classes of rings: clean rings, exchange rings, local and semilocal rings, Gelfand rings, maximal rings, etc. Inspired by LIP, there were defined lifting properties for other algebraic structures: MV-algebras, BL- algebras, residuated lattices, abelian l-groups, congruence distributive universal algebras, etc. In this paper we define a lifting property (LP) in quantales, structures that constitute a good abstraction of the lattices of ideals, filters or congruences. LP generalizes all the lifting properties existin…
The {\em reticulation} of an algebra $A$ is a bounded distributive lattice whose prime spectrum of ideals (or filters), endowed with the Stone topology, is homeomorphic to the prime spectrum of congruences of $A$, with its own Stone topology. The reticulation allows algebraic and topological properties to be transferred between the algebra $A$ and bounded distributive lattices, a transfer which is facilitated if we can define a {\em reticulation functor} from a variety containing $A$ to the variety of (bounded) distributive lattices. In this paper, we continue the study of the reticulation of …
Let A, B, S be categories, let F:A-->S and G:B-->S be functors. We assume that for "many" objects a in A, there exists an object b in B such that F(a) is isomorphic to G(b). We establish a general framework under which it is possible to transfer this statement to diagrams of A. These diagrams are all indexed by posets in which every principal ideal is a join-semilattice and the set of all upper bounds of any finite subset is a finitely generated upper subset. Various consequences follow, in particular: (1) The Grätzer-Schmidt Theorem, which states that every algebraic lattice is isomorphic to …
