Version 1: 135 pages. Remarks for that version: (1) The comment at the beginning of Section 3-6 (that if (k,l) arrows Q and P embeds into Q, then (k,l) arrows P) is easily seen to be valid in case Q is lower finite, unknown otherwise. The rest of the paper is not affected by this oversight. (2) In the statement of Problem 5, the functor Γshould go from semilattices and their embeddings to surjective V-measures. (3) References [18] and [63] are to appear (Combinatorica and Adv. in Appl. Math., respectively). To appear as Springer Lecture Notes in Mathematics, Volume 2029. Version 2 (165 pages) is the one sent to the publisher
Let A, B, S be categories, let F:A-->S and G:B-->S be functors. We assume that for "many" objects a in A, there exists an object b in B such that F(a) is isomorphic to G(b). We establish a general framework under which it is possible to transfer this statement to diagrams of A. These diagrams are all indexed by posets in which every principal ideal is a join-semilattice and the set of all upper bounds of any finite subset is a finitely generated upper subset. Various consequences follow, in particular: (1) The Grätzer-Schmidt Theorem, which states that every algebraic lattice is isomorphic to the congruence lattice of some algebra, can be extended to finite poset-indexed diagrams of algebraic lattices and compactness-preserving complete join-homomorphisms (and no finiteness restriction if there are large enough cardinals). (2) In a host of situations, the relative critical point between two locally finite quasivarieties is either less than aleph omega or equal to infinity. (3) A lattice of cardinality aleph 1 may not have any congruence-permutable, congruence-preserving extension.
We prove a general categorical theorem that enables us to state that under certain conditions, the range of a functor is large. As an application, we prove various results of which the following is a prototype: If every diagram, indexed by a lattice, of finite Boolean (v,0)-semilattices with (v,0)-embeddings, can be lifted with respect to the $\Conc$ functor on lattices, then so can every diagram, indexed by a lattice, of finite distributive (v,0)-semilattices with (v,0-embeddings. If the premise of this statement held, this would solve in turn the (still open) problem whether every distributi…
Associated to each small category $C$, there is a category of $C$-shaped diagrams of simplicial sets and an $\infty$-category of $NC$-shaped homotopy coherent diagrams of spaces. We present a functor which exhibits the latter as the $\infty$-categorical localisation of the former at the objectwise weak homotopy equivalences. This builds on a Quillen equivalence between the projective and covariant model structures associated to $C$ due to Heuts-Moerdijk, as well as Cisinski's theory of $\infty$-categorical localisations. We use the localisation functor to give simplified proofs that the left (…
Let $D$ be a large category which is cocomplete. We construct a model structure (in the sense of Quillen) on the category of small functors from $D$ to simplicial sets. As an application we construct homotopy localization functors on the category of simplicial sets which satisfy a stronger universal property than the customary homotopy localization functors do.
We call a diagram D absolutely cartesian if F(D) is homotopy cartesian for all homotopy functors F. This is a sensible notion for diagrams in categories C where Goodwillie's calculus of functors may be set up for functors with domain C. We prove a classification theorem for absolutely cartesian squares of spaces and state a conjecture of the classification for higher dimensional cubes.
Let C and D be quasi-categories (a.k.a. infinity-categories). Suppose also that one has an assignment sending commutative diagrams of C to commutative diagrams of D which respects face maps, but not necessarily degeneracy maps. (This is akin to having an assignment which respects all compositions, but may not send identity morphisms to identity morphisms.) When does this assignment give rise to an actual functor? We show that if the original assignment can be shown to respect identity morphisms up to homotopy, then there exists an honest functor of infinity-categories which respects the origin…
Category theory has foundational importance because it provides conceptual lenses to characterize what is important in mathematics. Originally the main lenses were universal mapping properties and natural transformations. In recent decades, the notion of adjoint functors has moved to center-stage as category theory's primary tool to characterize what is important in mathematics. Our focus here is to present a theory of adjoint functors. The basis for the theory is laid by first showing that the object-to-object "heteromorphisms" between the objects of different categories (e.g., insertion of g…
We study the transfer of (dual) relative Rickart properties via functors between abelian categories, and we deduce the transfer of (dual) relative Baer property. We also give applications to Grothendieck categories, comodule categories and (graded) module categories, with emphasis on endomorphism rings.
A classification is provided of functors, in particular polynomial ones, from a category with a zero object in which every object is a finite sum of copies of a generating object, into an abelian category. This classification is extended to include functors from a category with sums and a zero object, carrying a small, regular projective generator.
This thesis introduces quantum natural language processing (QNLP) models based on a simple yet powerful analogy between computational linguistics and quantum mechanics: grammar as entanglement. The grammatical structure of text and sentences connects the meaning of words in the same way that entanglement structure connects the states of quantum systems. Category theory allows to make this language-to-qubit analogy formal: it is a monoidal functor from grammar to vector spaces. We turn this abstract analogy into a concrete algorithm that translates the grammatical structure onto the architectur…
This paper is a continuation of [BaSh], where we studied the behaviour of the abelianization functor under inverse limits. Our main result in [BaSh] was that if $\mathcal{T}$ is a countable directed poset and $G:\mathcal{T}\to\mathcal{G} rp$ is a diagram of groups that satisfies the Mittag-Leffler condition, then the natural map $$\mathrm{Ab}({\lim}_{t\in\mathcal{T}}G_t)\to {\lim}_{t\in\mathcal{T}}\mathrm{Ab}(G_t)$$ is surjective, and its kernel is a cotorsion group. The abelianization is an example of a left adjoint functor from groups to abelian groups. In this paper we study the behaviour u…
Let $k$ be a commutative ring, let $\mathcal{C}$ be a small, $k$-linear, Hom-finite, locally bounded category, and let $\mathcal{B}$ be a $k$-linear abelian category. We construct a Frobenius exact subcategory $\mathcal{GP}(\mathcal{G}_P\operatorname{proj}(\mathcal{B}^{\mathcal{C}}))$ of the functor category $\mathcal{B}^{\mathcal{C}}$, and we show that it is a subcategory of the Gorenstein projective objects $\mathcal{GP}(\mathcal{B}^{\mathcal{C}})$ in $\mathcal{B}^{\mathcal{C}}$. Furthermore, we obtain criteria for when $\mathcal{GP}(\mathcal{G}_P\operatorname{proj}(\mathcal{B}^{\mathcal{C}}…
In this paper we investigate the categories of braided objects, algebras and bialgebras in a given monoidal category, some pairs of adjoint functors between them and their relations. In particular we construct a braided primitive functor and its left adjoint, the braided tensor bialgebra functor, from the category of braided objects to the one of braided bialgebras. The latter is obtained by a specific elaborated construction introducing a braided tensor algebra functor as a left adjoint of the forgetful functor from the category of braided algebras to the one of braided objects. The behaviour…
In this paper we present $2$-category theory from the perspective of Gray-categories using the graphical calculus of separated surface diagrams. As an extended example we consider cones and limits of $2$-functors. Then we use the canonical adjunction between $2$-computads and $2$-categories to interpret the comparison structure of lax functors and extend the surface diagram calculus with compositor sheets in order to represent and reason about them.
We show the existence of bilimits of 2-cofiltered diagrams of topoi, generalizing the construction of cofiltered bilimits developed in "SGA 4 Springer LNM 270 (1972)". For any given such diagram, we show that it can be represented by a 2-cofiltered diagram of small sites with finite limits, and we construct a small site for the inverse limit topos. This is done by taking the 2-filtered bicolimit of the underlying categories and inverse image functors. We use the construction of this bicolimit developed in "A construction of 2-filtered bicolimits of categories, Cah. Top. et Geo. Diff. Vol. XLVI…
Consider a diagram of quasi-categories that admit and functors that preserve limits or colimits of a fixed shape. We show that any weighted limit whose weight is a projective cofibrant simplicial functor is again a quasi-category admitting these (co)limits and that they are preserved by the functors in the limit cone. In particular, the Bousfield-Kan homotopy limit of a diagram of quasi-categories admit any limits or colimits existing in and preserved by the functors in that diagram. In previous work, we demonstrated that the quasi-category of algebras for a homotopy coherent monad could be de…
This is the second paper in a series. In part I we developed deformation theory of objects in homotopy and derived categories of DG categories. Here we extend these (derived) deformation functors to an appropriate bicategory of artinian DG algebras and prove that these extended functors are pro-representable in a strong sense.
We will study commuting properties of the defect functor $\mathrm{Dev}_β=\mathrm{Coker}\mathrm{Hom}_\mathcal{C}(β,-)$ associate to a homomorphism $β$ in a finitely presented category. As an application, we characterize objects $M$ such that $\mathrm{Ext}^1_\mathcal{C}(M,-)$ commutes with direct unions (i.e. direct limits of monomorphisms), assuming that $\mathcal{C}$ has a generator which is a direct sum of finitely presented projective objects.
Let $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ be monoidal categories and let $R:\mathcal{A} \rightarrow \mathcal{B}$ be a lax monoidal functor. If $R$ has a left adjoint $L$, it is well-known that the two adjoints induce functors $\overline{R}={\sf Alg}(R):{\sf Alg}(\mathcal{A})\rightarrow {\sf Alg }(\mathcal{B})$ and $\underline{L}={\sf Coalg(L)}:{\sf Coalg}(\mathcal{B})\rightarrow {\sf Coalg}(\mathcal{A})$ respectively. The pair $(L,R)$ is called "liftable" if the functor $\overline{R}$ has a left adjoint and if the functor $\underline{L}$ has a right adjoint. A pleasing fact is that, when $\mathcal{A…
We prove that any faithful Frobenius functor between abelian categories preserves the Gorenstein projective dimension of objects. Consequently, it preserves and reflects Gorenstein projective objects. We give conditions on when a Frobenius functor preserves the stable categories of Gorenstein projective objects, the singularity categories and the Gorenstein defect categories, respectively. In the appendix, we give a direct proof of the following known result: for an abelian category with enough projectives and injectives, its global Gorenstein projective dimension coincides with its global Gor…
Given a tensor triangulated category we investigate the geometry of the Balmer spectrum as a locally ringed space. Specifically we construct functors assigning to every object in the category a corresponding sheaf and a notion of support based upon these sheaves. We compare this support to the usual support in tt-geometry and show that under reasonable conditions they agree on compact objects. We show that when tt-categories satisfy a scheme-like property then the sheaf associated to an object is quasi-coherent, and that in the presence of an appropriate t-structure and affine assumption, this…
We introduce pseudocubical objects with pseudoconnections in an arbitrary category, obtained from the Brown-Higgins structure of a cubical object with connections by suitably relaxing their identities, and construct a cubical analog of the Tierney-Vogel theory of simplicial derived functors. The crucial point in the construction is that projective precubical resolutions which are naturally used to define our cubical derived functors possess pseudodegeneracies and pseudoconnections. The same fact is essentially used for proving that in the case of an additive functor between abelian categories,…
In previous work, we defined the category of functors Fquad, associated to vector spaces over the field with two elements equipped with a nondegenerate quadratic form. In this paper, we define a special family of objects in the category Fquad, named the mixed functors. We give the complete decompositions of two elements of this family that give rise to two new infinite families of simple objects in the category Fquad.
We consider the endomorphism operad of a functor, which is roughly the object of natural transformations from (monoidal) powers of that functor to itself. There are many examples from geometry, topology, and algebra where this object has already been implicitly studied. We ask whether the endomorphism operad of the forgetful functor from algebras over an operad to the ground category recovers that operad. The answer is positive for operads in vector spaces over an infinite field, but negative both in vector spaces over finite fields and in sets. Several examples are computed.
We introduce and study functor-functor and monad-comonad interaction laws as mathematical objects to describe interaction of effectful computations with behaviors of effect-performing machines. Monad-comonad interaction laws are monoid objects of the monoidal category of functor-functor interaction laws. We show that, for suitable generalizations of the concepts of dual and Sweedler dual, the greatest functor resp. monad interacting with a given functor or comonad is its dual while the greatest comonad interacting with a given monad is its Sweedler dual. We relate monad-comonad interaction law…
In this paper, we continue the study of the category of functors Fquad, associated to F_2-vector spaces equipped with a nondegenerate quadratic form, initiated in two previous papers of the author. We define a filtration of the standard projective objects in Fquad; this refines to give a decomposition into indecomposable factors of the two first standard projective objects in Fquad. As an application of these two decompositions, we give a complete description of the polynomial functors of the category Fquad.
This paper develops a theory of colimit sketches "with constructions" in higher category theory, formalising the input to the ubiquitous procedure of adjoining specified "constructible" colimits to a category such that specified "relation" colimits are enforced (or preserved). From a more technical standpoint, sketches are a way to describe dense functors using techniques from the homotopy theory of diagrams. We establish basic properties of diagrams in an infinity-category C as a model for presheaves on C and Bousfield localisations thereof, discuss extensions of functors and adjunctions, and…
There is some consensus among orthodox category theorists that the concept of adjoint functors is the most important concept contributed to mathematics by category theory. We give a heterodox treatment of adjoints using heteromorphisms (object-to-object morphisms between objects of different categories) that parses an adjunction into two separate parts (left and right representations of heteromorphisms). Then these separate parts can be recombined in a new way to define a cognate concept, the brain functor, to abstractly model the functions of perception and action of a brain. The treatment us…
There exists a canonical functor from the category of fibrant objects of a model category modulo cylinder homotopy to its homotopy category. We show that this functor is faithful under certain conditions, but not in general.
We study sets of commuting reflection functors in the derived category of sheaves on Calabi-Yau varieties. We show that such a collection is determined by a set of mutually orthogonal spherical objects. We also show that when the spherical objects are locally-free sheaves then the kernel of the composite transform parametrizes properly torsion-free with zero-dimensional singularity sets and conversely that such a kernel gives rise to a collection of mutually orthogonal spherical vector bundles. We do this using a more detailed analysis of the reason why spherical twists give equivalences.
We study polynomial functors of degree 2, called quadratic, with values in the category of abelian groups $Ab$, and whose source category is an arbitrary category $\C$ with null object such that all objects are colimits of copies of a generating object $E$ which is small and regular projective; this includes all pointed algebraic varieties. More specifically, we are interested in such quadratic functors $F$ from $\C$ to $Ab$ which preserve filtered colimits and suitable coequalizers; one may take reflexive ones if $\C$ is Mal'cev and Barr exact. A functorial equivalence is established between …
