In this paper we study the set of projective maps between compact proper convex real projective manifolds. We show that this set contains only finitely many distinct homotopy classes and each homotopy class has the structure of a real projective manifold. When the target manifold is strictly convex, our results imply that each non-trivial homotopy class contains at most one projective map. These results are motivated by the theory of holomorphic maps between compact complex manifolds.
We prove the projective plane $\rp^2$ is an absolute extensor of a finite-dimensional metric space $X$ if and only if the cohomological dimension mod 2 of $X$ does not exceed 1. This solves one of the remaining difficult problems (posed by A.N.Dranishnikov) in extension theory. One of the main tools is the computation of the fundamental group of the function space $\Map(\rp^n,\rp^{n+1})$ (based at inclusion) as being isomorphic to either $\Z_4$ or $\Z_2\oplus\Z_2$ for $n\ge 1$. After reviewing recent results on symplectic Lefschetz pencils and symplectic branched covers of CP^2, we describe a new construction of maps from symplectic manifolds of any dimension to CP^2 and the associated monodromy invariants. We also show that a dimensional induction process makes it possible to describe any compact symplectic manifold by a series of words in braid groups and a word in a symmetric group.
