Let p(n) denote the number of unrestricted partitions of n. For i=0, 2, let p[i](n) denote the number of partitions pi of n such that O(pi) - O(pi') = i mod 4. Here O(pi) denotes the number of odd parts of the partition pi and pi' is the conjugate of pi. R. Stanley [13], [14] derived an infinite product representation for the generating function of p[0](n)-p[2](n). Recently, Holly Swisher[15] employed the circle method to show that limit[n->oo] p[0](n)/p(n) = 1/2 (i) and that for sufficiently large n 2 p[0](n) > p(n), if n=0,1 mod 4, 2 p[0](n) < p(n), otherwise. (ii) In this paper we study even/odd dissection of the Stanley product, and show how to use it to prove (i) and (ii) with no restriction on n. Moreover, we establish the following new result
|p[0](2n) - p[2](2n)| > |p[0](2n+1) - p[2](2n+1)|, n>0.
Two proofs of this surprising inequality are given. The first one uses the Gollnitz-Gordon partition theorem. The second one is an immediate corollary of a new partition inequality, which we prove in a combinatorial manner. Our methods are elementary. We use only Jacobi's triple product identity and some naive upper bound estimates.
We give a new proof of a partition theorem popularly known as Elder's theorem, but which is also credited to Stanley and Fine. We extend the theorem to the context of colored partitions (or prefabs). More specifically, we give analogous results for $b$-colored partitions, where each part occurs in $b$ colors; for $b$-colored partitions with odd parts (or distinct parts); for partitions where the part $k$ comes in $k$ colors; and, overpartitions.
Stanley defined a partition function t(n) as the number of partitions $λ$ of n such that the number of odd parts of $λ$ is congruent to the number of odd parts of the conjugate partition $λ'$ modulo 4. We show that t(n) equals the number of partitions of n with an even number of hooks of even length. We derive a closed-form formula for the generating function for the numbers p(n)-t(n). As a consequence, we see that t(n) has the same parity as the ordinary partition function p(n) for any n. A simple combinatorial explanation of this fact is also provided.
In a recent study of sign-balanced, labelled posets Stanley [13], introduced a new integral partition statistic srank(pi) = O(pi) - O(pi'), where O(pi) denotes the number of odd parts of the partition pi and pi' the conjugate of pi. In [1] Andrews proved the following refinement of Ramanujan's partition congruence mod 5: p[0](5n +4) = p[2](5n + 4) = 0 (mod 5), p(n) = p[0](n) + p[2](n), where p[i](n) (i = 0, 2) denotes the number of partitions of n with srank = i (mod 4) and p(n) is the number of unrestricted partitions of n. Andrews asked for a partition statistic that would divide the partiti…
In his paper, "On a Partition Function of Richard Stanley," George Andrews proves a certain partition identity analytically and asks for a combinatorial proof. This paper provides the requested combinatorial proof.
In this paper we present an extension of Stanley's theorem related to partitions of positive integers. Stanley's theorem states a relation between "the sum of the numbers of distinct members in the partitions of a positive integer $n$" and "the total number of 1's that occur in the partitions of $n$". Our generalization states a similar relation between "the sum of the numbers of distinct members in the partitions of $n$" and the total number of 2's or 3's or any general $k$ that occur in the partitions of $n$ and the subsequent integers. We also apply this result to obtain an array of interes…
In a recent study of sign-balanced, labelled posets Stanley, introduced a new integral partition statistic srank(pi) = O(pi) - O(pi'), where O(pi) denotes the number of odd parts of the partition pi and pi' is the conjugate of pi. Andrews proved the following refinement of Ramanujan's partition congruence mod 5: p[0](5n +4) = p[2](5n + 4) = 0 (mod 5), p(n) = p[0](n) + p[2](n), where p[i](n) (i = 0; 2) denotes the number of partitions of n with srank = i (mod 4) and p(n) is the number of unrestricted partitions of n. Andrews asked for a partition statistic that would divide the partitions enume…
We prove that the number of partitions of an integer into at most b distinct parts of size at most n forms a unimodal sequence for n sufficiently large with respect to b. This resolves a recent conjecture of Stanley and Zanello.
We present an affirmative answer to Stanley's zrank problem, namely, the zrank and rank are equal for any skew partition. We show that certain classes of restricted Cauchy matrices are nonsingular and furthermore, the signs depend on the number of zero entries. Similar to notion of the jrank of a skew partition, we give a characterization of the rank in terms of the Giambelli type matrices of the corresponding skew Schur functions. We also show that the sign of the determinant of a factorial Cauchy matrix is uniquely determined by the number of its zero entries, which implies the nonsingularit…
We show that the sum of the four parameter weights over all ordinary or strict partitions with parts each less than or equal to a given integer $N$ is expressed by the Al-Salam Chihara polynomials. This weight is a generalization of the Andrews-Stanley partition function. As a corollary we prove C. Boulet's results when the sum runs over all ordinary or strict partitions. In the last section we study the weighted sum of Schur's $P$-functions and $Q$-functions, where the sum runs over all strict partitions.
In this paper we go on to discuss about Stanley's theorem in Integer partitions. We give two different versions for the proof of the generalization of Stanley's theorem illustrating different techniques that may be applied to profitably understand the underlying structure behind the theorem.
We use the hook lengths of a partition to define two rectangular tableaux. We prove these tableaux have equal multisets of entries, first by elementary combinatorial arguments, and then using Stanley's Hook Content Formula and symmetric polynomials.
We define nice partitions of the multicomplex associated to a Stanley ideal. As the main result we show that if the monomial ideal $I$ is a CM Stanley ideal, then $I^p$ is a Stanley ideal as well, where $I^p$ is the polarization of $I$.
Stanley generalized MacMahon's classical theorem by proving a product formula for the norm-trace generating function for plane partition with unbounded parts. In his recent work on biothorgonal polynomials, Kamioka proved a finite analogue of Stanley's formula for plane partitions with bounded parts (arXiv:1508.01674). In this paper, we use techniques from the enumeration of tilings to give a new proof for Kamioka's formula.
An $N$-dimensional parallelepiped will be called a bar if and only if there are no more than $k$ different numbers among the lengths of its sides (the definition of bar depends on $k$). We prove that a parallelepiped can be dissected into finite number of bars iff the lengths of sides of the parallelepiped span a linear space of dimension no more than $k$ over $\QQ$. This extends and generalizes a well-known theorem of Max Dehn about partition of rectangles into squares. Several other results about dissections of parallelepipeds are obtained.
In this paper, we generalize a few important results in Integer Partitions; namely the results known as Stanley's theorem and Elder's theorem, and the congruence results proposed by Ramanujan for the partition function. We generalize the results of Stanley and Elder from a fixed integer to an array of subsequent integers, and propose an analogue of Ramanujan's congruence relations for the `number of parts' function instead of the partition function. We also deduce the generating function for the `number of parts', and relate the technical results with their graphical interpretations through a …
Motivated by the Nekrasov-Okounkov formula on hook lengths, the first author conjectured that the Plancherel average of the $2k$-th power sum of hook lengths of partitions with size $n$ is always a polynomial of $n$ for any $k\in \mathbb{N}$. This conjecture was generalized and proved by Stanley (Ramanujan J., 23(1--3): 91--105, 2010). In this paper, inspired by the work of Stanley and Olshanski on the differential poset of Young lattice, we study the properties of two kinds of difference operators $D$ and $D^-$ defined on functions of partitions. Even though the calculations for higher orders…
Let the sign of a standard Young tableau be the sign of the permutation you get by reading it row by row from left to right, like a book. A conjecture by Richard Stanley says that the sum of the signs of all SYTs with n squares is 2^[n/2]. We present a stronger theorem with a purely combinatorial proof using the Robinson-Schensted correspondence and a new concept called chess tableaux. We also prove a sharpening of another conjecture by Stanley concerning weighted sums of squares of sign-imbalances. The proof is built on a remarkably simple relation between the sign of a permutation and the si…
Some conjectures on partition hook lengths, recently stated by the author, have been proved and generalized by Stanley, who also needed a formula by Andrews, Goulden and Jackson on symmetric functions to complete his derivation. Another identity on symmetric functions can be used instead. The purpose of this note is to prove it.
The notion of exponential Dowling structures is introduced, generalizing Stanley's original theory of exponential structures. Enumerative theory is developed to determine the Möbius function of exponential Dowling structures, including a restriction of these structures to elements whose types satisfy a semigroup condition. Stanley's study of permutations associated with exponential structures leads to a similar vein of study for exponential Dowling structures. In particular, for the extended r-divisible partition lattice we show the Möbius function is, up to a sign, the number of permutations …
We prove that the number of cyclically symmetric, self-complementary plane partitions contained in a cube of side $2n$ equals the square of the number of totally symmetric, self-complementary plane partitions contained in the same cube, without explicitly evaluating either of these numbers. This appears to be the first direct proof of this fact. The problem of finding such a proof was suggested by Stanley.
We introduce the theory of $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions, depending on a poset $\mathcal{P}$ and a map $ρ$ from $\mathcal{P}$ to positive integers. The generating function $\mathfrak{F}_{\mathcal{P},ρ}$ of $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions is a polynomial that, when the images of $ρ$ tend to infinity, tends to Stanley's generating function $F_{\mathcal{P}}$ of $\mathcal{P}$-partitions. Analogous to Stanley's fundamental theorem for $\mathcal{P}$-partitions, we show that the set of $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions decomposes as a disjoint union of $(\mathcal{L},ρ)$-partitions where $\mathcal{L}$ runs ove…
We give another proof for the (-1)-enumeration of self-complementary plane partitions with at least one odd side-length by specializing a certain Schur function identity. The proof is analogous to Stanley's proof for the ordinary enumeration. In addition, we obtain enumerations of 180-degree symmetric rhombus tilings of hexagons with a barrier of arbitrary length along the central line.
This is an expository note answering a question posed to us by Richard Stanley, in which we prove a limit shape theorem for partitions of $n$ which maximize the number of subpartitions. The limit shape and the growth rate of the number of subpartitions are explicit. The key ideas are to use large deviations estimates for random walks, together with convex analysis and the Hardy-Ramanujan asymptotics. Our limit shape coincides with Vershik's limit shape for uniform random partitions.
We look at the rank generating function $G_λ$ of partitions inside the Ferrers diagram of some partition $λ$, investigated by Stanton in 1990, as well as a closely related problem investigated by Stanley and Zanello in 2013. We show that $G_λ$ is not unimodal for a larger class of 4-part partitions than previously known, and also that if the ratios of parts of $λ$ are close enough to 1 (depending on how many parts $λ$ has), or if the first part is at least half the size of $λ$, then $G_λ$ is unimodal.
The involution Stanley symmetric functions $\hat{F}_y$ are the stable limits of the analogues of Schubert polynomials for the orbits of the orthogonal group in the flag variety. These symmetric functions are also generating functions for involution words, and are indexed by the involutions in the symmetric group. By construction each $\hat{F}_y$ is a sum of Stanley symmetric functions and therefore Schur positive. We prove the stronger fact that these power series are Schur $P$-positive. We give an algorithm to efficiently compute the decomposition of $\hat{F}_y$ into Schur $P$-summands, and p…
We partition in classes the set of matroids of fixed dimension on a fixed vertex set. In each class we identify two special matroids, respectively with minimal and maximal h-vector in that class. Such extremal matroids also satisfy a long-standing conjecture of Stanley. As a byproduct of this theory we establish Stanley's conjecture in various cases, for example the case of Cohen-Macaulay type less than or equal to 3.
The concept of $t$-difference operator for functions of partitions is introduced to prove a generalization of Stanley's theorem on polynomiality of Plancherel averages of symmetric functions related to contents and hook lengths. Our extension uses a generalization of the notion of Plancherel measure, based on walks in the Young lattice with steps given by the addition of $t$-hooks. It is well-known that the hook lengths of multiples of $t$ can be characterized by the Littlewood decomposition. Our study gives some further information on the contents and hook lengths of other congruence classes …
The $U$-polynomial of Noble and Welsh is known to have intimate connections with the Potts model as well as with several important graph polynomials. For each graph $G$, $U(G)$ is equivalent to Stanley's symmetric bad colouring polynomial $XB(G)$. Moreover Sarmiento established the equivalence between $U$ and the polychromate of Brylawski. Loebl defined the $q$-dichromate $B_q(G,x,y)$ as a function of a graph $G$ and three independent variables $q,x,y$, proved that it is equal to the partition function of the Potts model with variable number of states and with a certain external field contribu…
Let the sign of a skew standard Young tableau be the sign of the permutation you get by reading it row by row from left to right, like a book. We examine how the sign property is transferred by the skew Robinson-Schensted correspondence invented by Sagan and Stanley. The result is a remarkably simple generalization of the ordinary non-skew formula. The sum of the signs of all standard tableaux on a given skew shape is the sign-imbalance of that shape. We generalize previous results on the sign-imbalance of ordinary partition shapes to skew ones.
We consider the poset of vector partitions of $[n]$ into $s$ components, denoted $Π_{n,s}$, which was first defined by Stanley in 1978. In 1986, Sagan showed that this poset is CL-shellable, and hence has the homotopy type of a wedge of spheres of dimension $(n-2)$. We extend on this result to show that $Π_{n,s}$ is edge-lexicographic shellable. We then use this edge-labeling to find a recursive expression for the number of spheres, and show that when $s=1$ the number of spheres is equal to the number of complete non-ambiguous trees, first defined in 2014 by Aval, Boussicault, Bouvel and Silim…
We investigate the diagonal generating function of the Jacobi-Stirling numbers of the second kind $ \JS(n+k,n;z)$ by generalizing the analogous results for the Stirling and Legendre-Stirling numbers. More precisely, letting $\JS(n+k,n;z)=p_{k,0}(n)+p_{k,1}(n)z+...+p_{k,k}(n)z^k$, we show that $(1-t)^{3k-i+1}\sum_{n\geq0}p_{k,i}(n)t^n$ is a polynomial in $t$ with nonnegative integral coefficients and provide combinatorial interpretations of the coefficients by using Stanley's theory of $P$-partitions.
Stanley's theory of $(P,ω)$-partitions is a standard tool in combinatorics. It can be extended to allow for the presence of a restriction, that is a given maximal value for partitions at each vertex of the poset, as was shown by Assaf and Bergeron. Here we present a variation on their approach, which applies more generally. The enumerative side of the theory is more naturally expressed in terms of back stable quasisymmetric functions. We study the space of such functions, following the work of Lam, Lee and Shimozono on back stable symmetric functions. As applications we describe a new basis fo…
The rank of a skew partition $λ/μ$, denoted $rank(λ/μ)$, is the smallest number $r$ such that $λ/μ$ is a disjoint union of $r$ border strips. Let $s_{λ/μ}(1^t)$ denote the skew Schur function $s_{λ/μ}$ evaluated at $x_1=...=x_t=1, x_i=0$ for $i>t$. The zrank of $λ/μ$, denoted $zrank(λ/μ)$, is the exponent of the largest power of $t$ dividing $s_{λ/μ}(1^t)$. Stanley conjectured that $rank(λ/μ)=zrank(λ/μ)$. We show the equivalence between the validity of the zrank conjecture and the nonsingularity of restricted Cauchy matrices. In support of Stanley's conjecture we give affirmative answers for s…
We establish the relationship between volumes of flow polytopes associated to signed graphs and the Kostant partition function. A special case of this relationship, namely, when the graphs are signless, has been studied in detail by Baldoni and Vergne using techniques of residues. In contrast with their approach, we provide entirely combinatorial proofs inspired by the work of Postnikov and Stanley on flow polytopes. As a fascinating special family of flow polytopes, we study the Chan-Robbins-Yuen polytopes. Motivated by the beautiful volume formula $\prod_{k=1}^{n-2} Cat(k)$ for the type $A_n…
Jack polynomials generalize several classical families of symmetric polynomials, including Schur polynomials, and are further generalized by Macdonald polynomials. In 1989, Richard Stanley conjectured that if the Littlewood-Richardson coefficient for a triple of Schur polynomials is 1, then the corresponding coefficient for Jack polynomials can be expressed as a product of weighted hooks of the Young diagrams associated to the partitions indexing the coefficient. We prove a special case of this conjecture in which the partitions indexing the Littlewood-Richardson coefficient have at most 3 par…
Motivated by Stanley's results in \cite{St02}, we generalize the rank of a partition $λ$ to the rank of a shifted partition $S(λ)$. We show that the number of bars required in a minimal bar tableau of $S(λ)$ is max$(o, e + (\ell(λ) \mathrm{mod} 2))$, where $o$ and $e$ are the number of odd and even rows of $λ$. As a consequence we show that the irreducible projective characters of $S_n$ vanish on certain conjugacy classes. Another corollary is a lower bound on the degree of the terms in the expansion of Schur's $Q_λ$ symmetric functions in terms of the power sum symmetric functions.
For integer q>1, we derive edge q-colouring models for (i) the Tutte polynomial of a graph G on the hyperbola H_q, (ii) the symmetric weight enumerator of the set of group-valued q-flows of G, and (iii) a more general vertex colouring model partition function that includes these polynomials and the principal specialization order q of Stanley's symmetric monochrome polynomial. In the second half of the paper we exhibit a family of non-symmetric edge q-colouring models defined on k-regular graphs, whose partition functions for q >= k each evaluate the number of proper edge k-colourings of G when…
We introduce the concept of a bounded below set in a lattice. This can be used to give a generalization of Rota's broken circuit theorem to any finite lattice. We then show how this result can be used to compute and combinatorially explain the Möbius function in various examples including non-crossing set partitions, shuffle posets, and integer partitions in dominance order. Next we present a generalization of Stanley's theorem that the characteristic polynomial of a semimodular supersolvable lattice factors over the integers. We also give some applications of this second main theorem, includi…
Hooks are prominent in representation theory (of symmetric groups) and they play a role in number theory (via cranks associated to Ramanujan's congruences). A partition of a positive integer $n$ has a Young diagram representation. To each cell in the diagram there is an associated statistic called hook length, and if a number $t$ is absent from the diagram then the partition is called a $t$-core. A partition is an $(s,t)$-core if it is both an $s$- and a $t$-core. Since the work of Anderson on $(s,t)$-cores, the topic has received a growing attention. This paper expands the discussion to multi…
In symmetric groups, studies of permutation factorizations or triples of permutations satisfying certain conditions have a long history. One particular interesting case is when two of the involved permutations are long cycles, for which many surprisingly simple formulas have been obtained. Here we combinatorially enumerate the pairs of long cycles whose product has a given cycle-type and separates certain elements, extending several lines of studies, and we obtain general quantitative relations. As consequences, in a unified way, we recover a number of results expecting simple combinatorial pr…
This paper proves a combinatorial rule giving all maximal and minimal partitions $λ$ such that the Schur function $s_λ$ appears in a plethysm of two arbitrary Schur functions. Determining the decomposition of these plethysms has been identified by Stanley as a key open problem in algebraic combinatorics. As corollaries we prove three conjectures of Agaoka on the partitions labelling the lexicographically greatest and least Schur functions appearing in an arbitrary plethysm. We also show that the multiplicity of the Schur function labelled by the lexicographically least constituent may be arbit…
The notion of shuffle-compatible permutation statistics was implicit in Stanley's work on P-partitions and was first explicitly studied by Gessel and Zhuang. The aim of this paper is to prove that the triple ${\rm (udr, pk, des)}$ is shuffle-compatible as conjectured by Gessel and Zhuang, where ${\rm udr}$ denotes the number of up-down runs, ${\rm pk}$ denotes the peak number, and ${\rm des}$ denotes the descent number. This is accomplished by establishing an ${\rm (udr, pk, des)}$-preserving bijection in the spirit of Baker-Jarvis and Sagan's bijective proofs of shuffle-compatibility property…
In 1995, Stanley introduced the well-known chromatic symmetric function $X_{G}(x_{1},x_{2},\ldots)$ of a graph $G$. It is a sum of monomial symmetric functions such that for each vertex coloring of $G$ there is exactly one of these summands. The question, whether $X_{G}(x_1,x_{2},\ldots)$ distinguishes nonisomorphic trees with the same number of vertices, is still open in general. For special trees it has already been shown. In 2008, Martin, Morin and Wagner proved it for spiders and some caterpillars. We decompose a tree by separating the leafs and their neighbors and do the same to the remai…
