Let k be a finite field, a global field or a local non-archimedean field. Let H_1 and H_2 be two split, connected, semisimple algebraic groups defined over k. We prove that if H_1 and H_2 share the same set of maximal k-tori up to k-isomorphism, then the Weyl groups W(H_1) and W(H_2) are isomorphic, and hence the algebraic groups modulo their centers are isomorphic except for a switch of a certain number of factors of type B_n and C_n.
We remark that due to a recent result of Philippe Gille, above result holds for fields which admit arbitrary cyclic extensions.
Given an octonion algebra over a field k, its automorphism group G is an algebraic semisimple k-group of type G_2. We study the maximal tori of G in terms of the algebra C.
Answering a question of A. Rapinchuk, we construct examples of non- isomorphic semisimple algebraic groups H1 and H2 of type G2 with coherently equivalent systems of maximal k-tori.
We give a concrete characterization of the rational conjugacy classes of maximal tori in groups of type $D_n$, with specific emphasis on the case of number fields and p-adic fields. This includes the forms associated to quadratic spaces, all of their inner and outer forms as well as the Spin groups, their simply connected covers. In particular, in this work we handle all (simply connected) outer forms of $D_4$.
To follow up on the results of [1], we propose a computationally efficient explicit cyclic decomposition of the maximal tori in the groups $SL_n(q)$ and $SU_n(q)$ and their projective images. We also derive some corollaries to simplify practical calculation of the maximal tori. The result is based on a generic cyclic decomposition of a finite abelian group which might also be of interest.
We give a cohomological criterion for existence of outer automorphisms of a semisimple algebraic group over an arbitrary field. This criterion is then applied to the special case of groups of type D_2n over a global field, which completes some of the main results from the paper "Weakly commensurable arithmetic groups and isospectral locally symmetric spaces" (Pub. Math. IHES, 2009) by Prasad and Rapinchuk and gives a new proof of a result from another paper by the same authors.
We give a presentation of various results on zero-groups in o-minimal structures together with some new observations. In particular we prove that if G is a definably connected definably compact group in an o-minimal expansion of a real closed field, then for any maximal definably connected abelian subgroup T of G, G is the union of the conjugates of T. This can be seen as a generalization of the classical theorem that a compact connected Lie group is the union of the conjugates of any of its maximal tori.
Let $G$ be a finite group of Lie type $F_4$ with the Weyl group $W$. For every maximal torus $T$ of $G$, we find the minimal order of a supplement to $T$ in its algebraic normalizer $N(G,T)$. In particular, we obtain all maximal tori having complements in $N(G,T)$. Assume that $T$ corresponds to an element $w$ of $W$. We find the minimal order of lifts of $w$ to $N(G,T)$.
Let $G$ be a finite group of Lie type $E_l$ with $l\in\{6,7,8\}$ over $F_q$ and $W$ be the Weyl group of $G$. We describe all maximal tori $T$ of $G$ such that $T$ has a complement in its algebraic normalizer $N(G,T)$. Let $T$ correspond to an element $w$ of $W$. When $T$ does not have a complement, we show that $w$ has a lift in $N(G,T)$ of order $|w|$ in all considered groups, except the simply-connected group $E_7(q)$. In the latter case we describe the elements $w$ that have a lift in $N(G,T)$ of order $|w|$.
Let $G = O^{p'}(\bar{G}^F)$ be a finite simple group of Lie type defined over a field of characteristic $p$, where $F$ is a Steinberg endomorphism of the ambient simple algebraic group $\bar{G}$. Let $\bar{T}$ be an $F$-stable maximal torus of $\bar{G}$ and set $N = N_G(\bar{T})$. A conjecture due to Vdovin asserts that if $G \not\cong {\rm L}_3(2)$ then $N \cap N^x$ is a $p$-group for some $x \in G$. In this paper, we use a combination of probabilistic and computational methods to calculate the base size for the natural action of $G$ on $G/N$, which allows us to prove a stronger, and suitably…
A result of Lehrer describes a beautiful relationship between topological and combinatorial data on certain families of varieties with actions of finite reflection groups. His formula relates the cohomology of complex varieties to point counts on associated varieties over finite fields. Church, Ellenberg, and Farb use their representation stability results on the cohomology of flag manifolds, together with classical results on the cohomology rings, to prove asymptotic stability for "polynomial" statistics on associated varieties over finite fields. In this paper we investigate the underlying a…
We study the decomposition of certain reducible characters of classical groups as the sum of irreducible ones. Let ${\mathbf G}$ be an algebraic group of classical type with defining characteristic $p>0$, $μ$ a dominant weight and $W$ the Weyl group of ${\mathbf G}$. Let $G=G(q)$ be a finite classical group, where $q$ is a $p$-power. For a weight $μ$ of ${\mathbf G}$ the sum $s_μ$ of distinct weights $w(μ)$ with $w\in W$ viewed as a function on the semisimple elements of $G$ is known to be a generalized Brauer character of $G$ called an orbit character of $G$. We compute, for certain orbit cha…
Our main goal is to determine, under certain restrictions, the maximal closed connected subgroups of simple algebraic groups containing a regular torus. We call a torus regular if its centralizer is abelian. We also obtain some results of independent interest. In particular, we determine the irreducible representations of simple algebraic groups whose non-zero weights occur with multiplicity 1.
In this note we give a classification of the Maximal order Abelian subgroups of finite irreducible Coxeter groups. We also prove a Weyl group analogue of Cartan's theorem that all maximal tori in a connected compact Lie group are conjugate.
Let G be a connected linear algebraic group over a field k. We say that G is toric-friendly if for any field extension K/k and any maximal K-torus T in G the group G(K) has only one orbit in (G/T)(K). Our main result is a classification of semisimple (and under certain assumptions on k, of connected) toric-friendly groups.
Let $\G$ be a semisimple algebraic group over a number field $K$, $\mathcal{S}$ a finite set of places of $K$, $K_\mathcal{S}$ the direct product of the completions $K_v, v \in \mathcal{S}$, and $\OO$ the ring of $\mathcal{S}$-integers of $K$. Let $G = \G(K_\mathcal{S})$, $Γ= \G(\OO)$ and $π:G \rightarrow G/Γ$ the quotient map. We describe the closures of the locally divergent orbits ${Tπ(g)}$ %in $G/Γ$ where $T$ is a maximal $K_\mathcal{S}$-split torus in $G$. If $\# S = 2$ then the closure $\overline{Tπ(g)}$ is a finite union of $T$-orbits stratified in terms of parabolic subgroups of $\G \t…
We determine the groups which can appear as the normalizer of a maximal torus in a connected 2-compact group. The technique depends on using ideas of Tits to give a novel description of the normalizer of the torus in a connected compact Lie group, and then showing that this description can be extended to the 2-compact case.
Let $G$ be the mapping torus of a polynomially growing automorphism of a finitely generated free group. We determine which epimorphisms from $G$ to $\mathbb{Z}$ have finitely generated kernel, and we compute the rank of the kernel. We thus describe all possible ways of expressing $G$ as the mapping torus of a free group automorphism. This is similar to the case for 3--manifold groups, and different from the case of mapping tori of exponentially growing free group automorphisms. The proof uses a hierarchical decomposition of $G$ and requires determining the Bieri-Neumann-Strebel invariant of th…
