We give a light introduction to selection principles in topology, a young subfield of infinite-combinatorial topology. Emphasis is put on the modern approach to the problems it deals with. Recent results are described, and open problems are stated. Some results which do not appear elsewhere are also included, with proofs.

Combinatorial properties on nodec countable spaces with analytic topology

We study some variations of the product topology on families of clopen subsets of $2^{\mathbb{N}}\times\mathbb{N}$ in order to construct countable nodec regular spaces (i.e. in which every nowhere dense set is closed) with analytic topology which in addition are not selectively separable and do not satisfy the combinatorial principle $q^+$.

Minimally almost periodic group topology on infinite countable Abelian groups: A solution to Comfort's question

For any countable subgroup $H$ of an unbounded Abelian group $G$ there is a complete Hausdorff group topology $τ$ such that $H$ is the von Neumann radical of $(G,τ)$. In particular, we obtain the positive answer to Comfort's question: any unbounded countable Abelian group admits a complete Hausdorff minimally almost periodic (MinAP) group topology. A bounded infinite Abelian group admits a MinAP group topology if and only if all its leading Ulm-Kaplansky invariants are infinite. If, in addition, $G$ is countably infinite, a MinAP group topology can be chosen to be complete.

Which infinite abelian groups admit an almost maximally almost-periodic group topology?

A topological group G is said to be almost maximally almost-periodic if its von Neumann radical is non-trivial, but finite. In this paper, we prove that every abelian group with an infinite torsion subgroup admits a (Hausdorff) almost maximally almost-periodic group topology. Some open problems are also formulated.

Combinatorial principles from adding Cohen reals

In this paper we first formulate several ``combinatorial principles'' concerning kappa \times omega matrices of subsets of omega and prove that they are valid in the generic extension obtained by adding any number of Cohen reals to any ground model V, provided that the parameter kappa is an omega-inaccessible regular cardinal in V. Then we present a large number of applications of these principles, mainly to topology. We find many conditions equivalent to the model-theoretical property $λ\stackrelκ{\Rightarrow} μ$ introduced in [L1]. Our conditions involve uniformity of ultrafilters, compactness properties of products of topological spaces and the existence of certain infinite matrices.

Pseudocompact group topologies with no infinite compact subsets

We show that every Abelian group satisfying a mild cardinal inequality admits a pseudocompact group topology from which all countable subgroups inherit the maximal totally bounded topology (we say that such a topology satisfies property $\h$).
