Let S be a closed surface with nonzero Euler characteristic. We prove the existence of an open neighborhood V of the identity map of S in the C^1-topology with the following property: if G is an abelian subgroup of Diff^1(S) generated by any family of elements in V then the elements of G have common fixed points. This result generalizes a similar result due to Bonatti and announced in his paper "Diffeomorphismes commutants des surfaces et stabilite des fibrations en tores".
We prove that if d is an integer number bigger than 1 and f_1,...,f_d are commuting circle diffeomorphisms respectively of class C^(1+τ_k), where τ_1 + ... + τ_k > 1, then these maps are simultaneously conjugate to rotations provided that their rotation numbers are independent over the rationals.
Let D^r_+[0,1], r >= 1, denote the group of orientation-preserving C^r diffeomorphisms of [0,1]. We show that any two representations of Z^2 in D^r_+[0,1], r >= 2, are connected by a continuous path of representations of Z^2 in D^1_+[0,1]. We derive this result from the classical works by G. Szekeres and N. Kopell on the C^1 centralizers of the diffeomorphisms of [0,1) which are at least C^2 and fix only 0.
We prove that if $G\subset\text{Diff}^{1}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ is an Abelian subgroup generated by a family of commuting diffeomorphisms of the plane, all of which are $C^{1}$-close to the identity in the strong $C^{1}$-topology, and if there exist a point $p\in\mathbb{R}^2$ whose orbit is bounded under the action of $G$, then the elements of $G$ have a common fixed point in the convex hull of $\bar{\mathcal{O}_{p}(G)}$. Here, $\bar{\mathcal{O}_{p}(G)}$ denotes the topological closure of the orbit of $p$ by $G$.
Let $\mathcal{F}$ and $\mathcal{K}$ be commuting $C^\infty$ diffeomorphisms of the cylinder $\mathbb{T}\times\mathbb{R}$ that are, respectively, close to $\mathcal{F}_0 (x, y)=(x+ω(y), y)$ and $T_α(x, y)=(x+α, y)$, where $ω(y)$ is non-degenerate and $α$ is Diophantine. Using the KAM iterative scheme for the group action we show that $\mathcal{F}$ and $\mathcal{K}$ are simultaneously $C^\infty$-linearizable if $\mathcal{F}$ has the intersection property (including the exact symplectic maps) and $\mathcal{K}$ satisfies a semi-conjugacy condition. We also provide examples showing necessity of the…
Let $d\geq 2$ be an integer and let $ω_1,\cdots ,ω_d$ be moduli of continuity in a specified class which contains the moduli of Hölder continuity. Let $f_k$, $k\in\{1,\cdots,d\}$, be $C^{1+ω_k}$ orientation preserving diffeomorphisms of the circle and $f_1,\cdots, f_d$ commute with each other. We prove that if the rotation numbers of $f_k$'s are independent over the rationals and $ω_1(t)\cdotsω_d(t)=tω(t)$ with $\lim_{t\rightarrow 0^+}ω(t)=0$, then $f_1,\cdots,f_d$ are simultaneously (topologically) conjugate to rigid rotations.
Let f_1,...,f_N be commuting germs of holomorphic diffeomorphisms in C fixing the origin with irrational rationally independent rotation numbers alpha_1,...,alpha_N. We adapt Yoccoz' renormalization of germs to this setting to show that a Brjuno-type condition on simultaneous Diophantine approximability of the rotation numbers is sufficient for simultaneous linearizability of f_1,...,f_N. This generalizes a result of Moser's. In the absence of periodic orbits we show that a weaker arithmetic condition analogous to that of Perez-Marco's for the case of a single germ is sufficent for linearizabi…
We prove the existence of common fixed points for commuting homeomorphisms of the plane R^2 or the sphere S^2, which preserve a probability measure. For example: some commuting C^1-diffeomorphisms of S^2, which are sufficiently close to the identity and preserve a probability measure whose support is not a single point, have at least two common fixed points.
Let $f$ be an Anosov diffeomorphism of the $n$-dimensional torus ${\mathbb{T}}^n$ and $τ$ a continuous self-mapping of ${\mathbb{T}}^n$ commuting with $f$. We prove that $τ$ is surjective if and only if the restriction of $τ$ to each homoclinicity class of $f$ is injective.
In this note we prove that a homeomorphism is countably-expansive if and only if it is measure-expansive. This result is applied for showing that the $C^1$-interior of the sets of expansive, measure-expansive and continuum-wise expansive $C^1$-diffeomorphisms coincide.
It was shown that in robustly transitive, partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms on three dimensional closed manifolds, the strong stable or unstable foliation is minimal. In this article, we prove ``almost all'' leaves of both stable and unstable foliations are dense in the whole manifold.
We consider Anosov diffeomorphisms on $\mathbb{T}^3$ such that the tangent bundle splits into three subbundles $E^s_f \oplus E^{wu}_f \oplus E^{su}_f.$ We show that if $f$ is $C^r, r \geq 2,$ volume preserving, then $f$ is $C^1$ conjugated with its linear part $A$ if and only if the center foliation $\mathcal{F}^{wu}_f$ is absolutely continuous and the equality $λ^{wu}_f(x) = λ^{wu}_A,$ between center Lyapunov exponents of $f$ and $A,$ holds for $m$ a.e. $x \in \mathbb{T}^3.$ We also conclude rigidity of derived from Anosov diffeomorphism, assuming an strong absolute continuity property (Unifo…
These largely expository notes describe the properties of the function ${\cal R}$ which assigns a number to a $4$-tuple of distinct fixed points of an orientation preserving homeomorphism or diffeomorphism of $S^2$.
In this short note we prove that if a symplectomorphism f is C1-stably shadowable, then f is Anosov. The same result is obtained for volume-preserving diffeomorphisms.
Let $f: M \to M$ be a diffeomorphism defined on a compact boundaryless $d$-dimensional manifold $M$, $d\geq 2$. C. Morales has proposed the notion of measure expansiveness. In this note we show that diffeomorphisms in a residual subset far from homoclinic tangencies are measure expansive. We also show that surface diffeomorphisms presenting homoclinic tangencies can be $C^1$-approximated by non-measure expansive diffeomorphisms.
This note illustrates the strategy of our paper on piecewise affine surface homeomorphisms by giving a new proof of the finite multiplicity of the maximum entropy measure of Anosov diffeomorphisms (here on surfaces). This approach avoids the explicit construction of Markov partitions and will be applied elsewhere to some non-uniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms.
Our aim in this note is to present some of the crucial contributions of Jean-Christophe Yoccoz to the theory of circle diffeomorphisms. We start with a short historical account before exposing Yoccoz' work. Then we give a brief description of the main conceptual and technical tools of the theory, with a focus on describing Yoccoz' work and contributions.
In these expository notes, we give a proof of regularity of Anosov splitting for Anosov diffeomorphisms in a torus. We also generalize the idea to higher dimensions and to Anosov flows.
Let $M$ be a closed surface and $f$ a diffeomorphism of $M$. A diffeomorphism is said to permute a dense collection of domains, if the union of the domains are dense and the iterates of any one domain are mutually disjoint. In this note, we show that if $f \in \diff^{1+α}(M)$, with $α>0$, and permutes a dense collection of domains with bounded geometry, then $f$ has zero topological entropy.
In this note we describe centralizers of volume preserving partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms which are homotopic to identity on Seifert fibered and hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Our proof follows the strategy of Damjanovic, Wilkinson and Xu (arXiv:1902.05201) who recently classified the centralizer for perturbations of time-$1$ maps of geodesic flows in negative curvature. We strongly rely on recent classification results in dimension 3 established in (arXiv:1908.06227).
The aim of this short note is to explain how the arguments of the "closing lemma with time control" of F. Abdenur and S. Crovisier (arXiv:1111.4206) can be used to answer Question 1 of the article "Instability for the rotation set of homeomorphisms of the torus homotopic to the identity" of S. Addas-Zanata.
Let $X$ be a compact metrizable group and $Γ$ a countable group acting on $X$ by continuous group automorphisms. We give sufficient conditions under which the dynamical system $(X,Γ)$ is surjunctive, i.e., every injective continuous map $τ\colon X \to X$ commuting with the action of $Γ$ is surjective.
This note presents a non-rigorous study of the linear response for an SRB (or `natural physical') measure $ρ$ of a diffeomorphism $f$ in the presence of tangencies of the stable and unstable manifolds of $ρ$. We propose that generically, if $ρ$ has no zero Lyapunov exponent, if its stable dimension is sufficiently large (greater than 1/2 or perhaps 3/2) and if it is exponentially mixing in a suitable sense, then the following formal expression for the first derivative of $ρ(ϕ)$ with respect to $f$ along $X$ is convergent: $$ Ψ(z)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty z^n\intρ(dx)\,X(x)\cdot\nabla_x(ϕ\circ f^n)\qq…
Let $(X,μ,T_1,...,T_l)$ be a measure-preserving system with those $T_i$ are commuting. Suppose that the polynomials $p_1(t),...,p_{l}(t)\in\Z[t]$ with $p_j(0)=0$ have distinct degrees. Then for any $ε>0$ and $A\subseteq X$ with $μ(A)>0$, the set $$ \{n:\,μ(A\cap T_1^{-p_1(n)}A\cap...\cap T_l^{-p_l(n)}A)\geqμ(A)^{l+1}-ε\} $$ has bounded gaps.
In this note we discuss three interconnected problems about dynamics of Hamiltonian or, more generally, just smooth diffeomorphisms. The first two concern the existence and properties of the maps whose iterations approximate the identity map with respect to some norm, e.g., $C^1$- or $C^0$-norm for general diffeomorphisms and the $γ$-norm in the Hamiltonian case, and the third problem is the Lagrangian Poincaré recurrence conjecture.
