We study the eigenvalue problem $-u^{\prime\prime}(z)-[(iz)^m+P_{m-1}(iz)]u(z)=λu(z)$ with the boundary conditions that $u(z)$ decays to zero as $z$ tends to infinity along the rays $\arg z=-\fracπ{2}\pm \frac{2π}{m+2}$, where $P_{m-1}(z)=a_1 z^{m-1}+a_2 z^{m-2}+...+a_{m-1} z$ is a polynomial and integers $m\geq 3$. We provide an asymptotic expansion of the eigenvalues $λ_n$ as $n\to+\infty$, and prove that for each {\it real} polynomial $P_{m-1}$, the eigenvalues are all real and positive, with only finitely many exceptions.
We study the eigenvalue problem $-u"+V(z)u=λu$ in the complex plane with the boundary condition that $u(z)$ decays to zero as $z$ tends to infinity along the two rays $\arg z=-\fracπ{2} \pm \frac{2π}{m+2}$, where $V(z)=-(iz)^m-P(iz)$ for complex-valued polynomials $P$ of degree at most $m-1\geq 2$. We provide an asymptotic formula for eigenvalues and a necessary and sufficient condition for the anharmonic oscillator to have infinitely many real eigenvalues.
For integers $m\geq 3$ and $1\leq\ell\leq m-1$, we study the eigenvalue problems $-u^{\prime\prime}(z)+[(-1)^{\ell}(iz)^m-P(iz)]u(z)=λu(z)$ with the boundary conditions that $u(z)$ decays to zero as $z$ tends to infinity along the rays $\arg z=-\fracπ{2}\pm \frac{(\ell+1)π}{m+2}$ in the complex plane, where $P$ is a polynomial of degree at most $m-1$. We provide asymptotic expansions of the eigenvalues $λ_{n}$. Then we show that if the eigenvalue problem is $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric, then the eigenvalues are all real and positive with at most finitely many exceptions. Moreover, we show that whe…
In this paper, we consider the perturbations of the Harmonic Oscillator Operator by an odd pair of point interactions: $z (δ(x - b) - δ(x + b))$. We study the spectrum by analyzing a convenient formula for the eigenvalue. We conclude that if $z = ir$, $r$ real, as $r \to \infty$, the number of non-real eigenvalues tends to infinity.
The multiplicity of the lowest eigenvalue E of the so-called non-commutative harmonic oscillator Q(α,β) is studied. It is shown that E is simple for αand βin some region.
We derive explicit inequalities for sums of eigenvalues of one-dimensional Schrödinger operators on the whole line. In the case of the perturbed harmonic oscillator, these bounds converge to the corresponding trace formula in the limit as the number of eigenvalues covers the whole spectrum.
A one-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator perturbed by a smooth compactly supported potential is considered. For the corresponding eigenvalues $λ_n$, a complete asymptotic expansion for large $n$ is obtained, and the coefficients of this expansion are expressed in terms of the heat invariants. A sequence of trace formulas is obtained, expressing regularised sums of integer powers of eigenvalues $λ_n$ in terms of the heat invariants.
The pseudo-perturbation shifted-l expansion technique PSLET is shown applicable in the non-Hermitian PT-symmetric context. The construction of bound states for several PT-symmetric potentials is presented, with special attention paid to V(r) = ir^3-alpha sqrt(ir) oscillators.
We consider operators of the form H+V where H is the one-dimensional harmonic oscillator and V is a zero-order pseudo-differential operator which is quasi-periodic in an appropriate sense (one can take V to be multiplication by a periodic function for example). It is shown that the eigenvalues of H+V have asymptotics of the form λ_n(H+V)=λ_n(H)+W(\sqrt n)n^{-1/4}+O(n^{-1/2}\ln(n)) as n\to+\infty, where W is a quasi-periodic function which can be defined explicitly in terms of V.
We study small, PT-symmetric perturbations of self-adjoint double-well Schrödinger operators in dimension $n\geq 1$. We prove that the eigenvalues stay real for a very small perturbation, then bifurcate to the complex plane as the perturbation gets stronger.
We consider a model of planar PT-symmetric waveguide and study the phenomenon of the eigenvalues collision under the perturbation of boundary conditions. This phenomenon was discovered numerically in previous works. The main result of this work is an analytic explanation of this phenomenon.
We discuss spectral properties of the family of quartic oscillators $\mathfrak h_{\mathcal M}(α) =-\frac{d^2}{dt^2} +\Big(\frac{1}{2} t^{2} -α\Big)^2$ on the real line, where $α\in \mathbb{R}$ is a parameter. This operator appears in a variety of applications coming from quantum mechanics to harmonic analysis on Lie groups, Riemannian geometry and superconductivity. We study the variations of the eigenvalues $λ_j(α)$ of $\mathfrak h_{\mathcal M}(α)$ as functions of the parameter $α$.We prove that for $j$ sufficiently large, $α\mapsto λ_j(α)$ has a unique critical point, which is a nondegenerat…
In this paper we consider eigenvalues asymptotics of the energy operator in the one of the most interesting models of quantum physics, describing an interaction between two-level system and harmonic oscillator. The energy operator of this model can be reduced to some class of infinite Jacobi matrices. Discrete spectrum of this class of operators represents the perturbed spectrum of harmonic oscillator. The perturbation is an unbounded operator compact with respect to unperturbed one. We use slightly modified Janas-Naboko successive diagonalization approach and some new compactness criteria for…
In this paper, we study eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of $p$-Laplacians with Dirichlet boundary condition on graphs. We characterize the first eigenfunction (and the maximum eigenfunction for a bipartite graph) via the sign condition. By the uniqueness of the first eigenfunction of $p$-Laplacian, as $p\to 1,$ we identify the Cheeger constant of a symmetric graph with that of the quotient graph. By this approach, we calculate various Cheeger constants of spherically symmetric graphs.
The purpose of this Note is to highlight the spectral instability of some non-selfadjoint differential operators, by studying the growth rate of the norms of the spectral projections $Π_n$ associated with their eigenvalues. More precisely, we are concerned with the complex Airy operator and even anharmonic oscillator. We get asymptotic expansions for the norm of the spectral projections associated with the large eigenvalues, extending the results of Davies and Davies-Kuijlaars.
In this paper we introduce a parameter $Mm(G)$, defined as the maximum over the minimal multiplicities of eigenvalues among all symmetric matrices corresponding to a graph $G$. We compute $Mm(G)$ for several families of graphs.
In this article we will explore Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalues on balls on spherically symmetric manifolds. We will compare any Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalue with the corresponding Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalue on balls in Euclidean space with the same radius. As a special case we will show that the Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalues on balls with small radius on the sphere are smaller than the corresponding eigenvalues on the Euclidean ball with the same radius. While the opposite is true for the Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalues of hyperbolic spaces.
We consider problems related to the asymptotic minimization of eigenvalues of anisotropic harmonic oscillators in the plane. In particular we study Riesz means of the eigenvalues and the trace of the corresponding heat kernels. The eigenvalue minimization problem can be reformulated as a lattice point problem where one wishes to maximize the number of points of $(\mathbb{N}-\tfrac12)\times(\mathbb{N}-\tfrac12)$ inside triangles with vertices $(0, 0), (0, λ\sqrtβ)$ and $(λ/{\sqrtβ}, 0)$ with respect to $β>0$, for fixed $λ\geq 0$. This lattice point formulation of the problem naturally leads to …
This paper is devoted to the asymptotic behavior of all eigenvalues of Symmetric (in general non Hermitian) Toeplitz matrices with moderately smooth symbols which trace out a simple loop on the complex plane line as the dimension of the matrices increases to infinity. The main result describes the asymptotic structure of all eigenvalues. The constructed expansion is uniform with respect to the number of eigenvalues. Keywords: Toeplitz matrices, eigenvalues, asymptotic expansions
Let M be a geometrically finite rank one locally symmetric manifolds. We prove that the spectrum of the Laplace operator on M is finite in a small interval which is optimal.
We say that a list of real numbers is "symmetrically realisable" if it is the spectrum of some (entrywise) nonnegative symmetric matrix. The Symmetric Nonnegative Inverse Eigenvalue Problem (SNIEP) is the problem of characterising all symmetrically realisable lists. In this paper, we present a recursive method for constructing symmetrically realisable lists. The properties of the realisable family we obtain allow us to make several novel connections between a number of sufficient conditions developed over forty years, starting with the work of Fiedler in 1974. We show that essentially all prev…
We study for $α\in\R$, $k \in {\mathbb N} \setminus \{0\}$ the family of self-adjoint operators \[ -\frac{d^2}{dt^2}+\Bigl(\frac{t^{k+1}}{k+1}-α\Bigr)^2 \] in $L^2(\R)$ and show that if $k$ is even then $α=0$ gives the unique minimum of the lowest eigenvalue of this family of operators. Combined with earlier results this gives that for any $k \geq 1$, the lowest eigenvalue has a unique minimum as a function of $α$.
In this paper, we prove a quantitative spectral inequality for the second Robin eigenvalue in non-compact rank-1 symmetric spaces. In particular, this shows that for bounded domains in non-compact rank-1 symmetric spaces, the geodesic ball maximises the second Robin eigenvalue among domains of the same volume, with negative Robin parameter in the regime connecting the first nontrivial Neumann and Steklov eigenvalues. This result generalises the work of Freitas and Laugesen in the Euclidean setting [FL21] as well as our previous work in the hyperbolic space [LWW20].
The quantum eigenvalue problem arises in the study of the geometric measure of the quantum entanglement. In this paper, we convert the quantum eigenvalue problem to the Z-eigenvalue problem of a real symmetric tensor. In this way, the theory and algorithms for Z-eigenvalues can be applied to the quantum eigenvalue problem. In particular, this gives an upper bound for the number of quantum eigenvalues. We show that the quantum eigenvalues appear in pairs, i.e., if a real number $λ$ is a quantum eigenvalue of a square symmetric tensor $Ψ$, then $-λ$ is also a quantum eigenvalue of $Ψ$. When $Ψ$ …
A new idea to approximate the second eigenfunction and the second eigenvalue of $p$-Laplace operator is given. In the case of the Dirichlet boundary condition, the scheme has the restriction that the positive and the negative part of the second eigenfunction have equal $L^p$-norm, however, in the case of Neumann boundary condition, our algorithm has not such restriction. Our algorithm generates a descending sequence of positive numbers that converges to the second eigenvalue. We give various examples and computational tests.
The unique reconstruction of a spherically-symmetric wave speed $v$ is considered in a bounded spherical region of radius $b$ from the set of corresponding transmission eigenvalues for which the corresponding eigenfunctions are also spherically symmetric. If the integral of $1/v$ on the interval $[0,b]$ is less than $b,$ assuming that there exists at least one $v$ corresponding to the data, $v$ is uniquely reconstructed from the data consisting of such transmission eigenvalues and their "multiplicities," where the multiplicity is defined as the multiplicity of the transmission eigenvalue as a …
The sum of the first $n \geq 1$ eigenvalues of the Laplacian is shown to be maximal among triangles for the equilateral triangle, maximal among parallelograms for the square, and maximal among ellipses for the disk, provided the ratio $\text{(area)}^3/\text{(moment of inertia)}$ for the domain is fixed. This result holds for both Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalues, and similar conclusions are derived for Robin boundary conditions and Schrödinger eigenvalues of potentials that grow at infinity. A key ingredient in the method is the tight frame property of the roots of unity. For general convex p…
For given k distinct complex conjugate pairs, l distinct real numbers, and a given graph G on 2k+l vertices with a matching of size at least k, we will show that there is a real matrix whose eigenvalues are the given numbers and its graph is G. In particular, this implies that any real matrix with distinct eigenvalues is similar to a real, irreducible, tridiagonal matrix.
In [8] a notion of generalized Hadamard product was introduced. We show that when certain kinds of tensors interact with the eigenvalues of symmetric matrices the resulting formulae can be nicely expressed using the generalized Hadamard product and two simple linear operations on the tensors. The Calculus-type rules developed here will be used in [9] to routinize, to a large extend, the differentiation of spectral functions. We include all the necessary definitions and results from [8] on the generalized Hadamard product to make the reading self-contained.
