As a significant strengthening of properties of earlier algebras of generalized functions, here are presented classes of such algebras which can deal with dense singularities. In fact, the cardinal of the set of singular points can be larger than that of the nonsingular points. This large class of singularities allows the solution of large classes of smooth nonlinear PDEs. This in certain ways overcomes the celebrated 1957 H. Lewy impossibility result.
Many physical systems are described by partial differential equations (PDEs). Determinism then requires the Cauchy problem to be well-posed. Even when the Cauchy problem is well-posed for generic Cauchy data, there may exist characteristic Cauchy data. Characteristics of PDEs play an important role both in Mathematics and in Physics. I will review the theory of characteristics and bicharacteristics of PDEs, with a special emphasis on intrinsic aspects, i.e., those aspects which are invariant under general changes of coordinates. After a basically analytic introduction, I will pass to a modern,…
Our main goal is the comparative study of singularities of solutions to the systems of first order quasilinear PDEs and their perturbations containing higher derivatives. The study is focused on the subclass of Hamiltonian PDEs with one spatial dimension. For the systems of order one or two we describe the local structure of singularities of a generic solution to the unperturbed system near the point of "gradient catastrophe" in terms of standard objects of the classical singularity theory; we argue that their perturbed companions must be given by certain special solutions of Painleve' equatio…
We discuss the notions of resurgence, formalizability, and formation of singularities in the context of partial differential equations. The results show that Ecalle's how analyzability theory extends naturally to PDEs.
In this paper, we consider the dynamics of solutions to complex-valued evolutionary partial differential equations (PDEs) and show existence of heteroclinic orbits from nontrivial equilibria to zero via computer-assisted proofs. We also show that the existence of unbounded solutions along unstable manifolds at the equilibrium follows from the existence of heteroclinic orbits. Our computer-assisted proof consists of three separate techniques of rigorous numerics: an enclosure of a local unstable manifold at the equilibria, a rigorous integration of PDEs, and a constructive validation of a trapp…
In this paper we give an explicit representation of the solutions of a characteristic Cauchy problem for a class of PDEs with singular coefficients. We give the explicit solutions in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric functions, which enable us to study the singularities and the analytic continuation. Our results are illustrated through some examples.
The inverse scattering theory is a basic tool to solve linear differential equations and some Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). Using this theory the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV), the family of evolutionary Non Linear Schrodinger (NLS) equations, Kadomtzev-Petviashvili and many more completely integrable PDEs of mathematical physics are solved, using Zacharv-Shabath scheme. This last approach includes the use of a Lax pair, and has an advantage to be applied to wider class of equations, like difference equations, but has a disadvantage to be used only for "rapidly decreasing solutions". This t…
This paper is an attempt to classify finite-time singularities of PDEs. Most of the problems considered describe free-surface flows, which are easily observed experimentally. We consider problems where the singularity occurs at a point, and where typical scales of the solution shrink to zero as the singularity is approached. Upon a similarity transformation, exact self-similar behaviour is mapped to the fixed point of a {\it infinite dimensional dynamical system} representing the original dynamics. We show that the dynamics close to the fixed point is a useful way classifying the structure of …
We introduce a method of rigorous analysis of the location and type of complex singularities for nonlinear higher order PDEs as a function of the initial data. The method is applied to determine rigorously the asymptotic structure of singularities of the modified Harry-Dym equation $$ H_t + H_y = - {1/2} H^3 + H^3 H_{yyy} : H(y, 0) = y^{-1/2} $$ for small time at the boundaries of the sector of analyticity. Previous work \cite{CPAM}, \cite{invent03} shows existence, uniqueness and Borel summability of solutions of general PDEs. It is shown that the solution to the above initial value problem i…
The new global version of the Cauchy-Kovalevskaia theorem presented here is a strengthening and extension of the regularity of similar global solutions obtained earlier by the author. Recently the space-time foam differential algebras of generalized functions with dense singularities were introduced. A main motivation for these algebras comes from the so called space-time foam structures in General Relativity, where the set of singularities can be dense. A variety of applications of these algebras have been presented elsewhere, including in de Rham cohomology, Abstract Differential Geometry, Q…
Comparing and recognizing metrics can be extraordinarily difficult because of the group of diffeomorphisms. Two metrics, that could even be the same, could look completely different in different coordinates. This is the gauge problem. The general gauge problem is extremely subtle, especially for non-compact spaces. Often it can be avoided if one uses some additional structure of the particular situation. However, in many problems there is no additional structure. Instead we solve the gauge problem directly in great generality. The techniques and ideas apply to many problems. We use them to sol…
For the nonlinear wave equation $u_{tt} - c(u)\big(c(u) u_x\big)_x~=~0$, it is well known that solutions can develop singularities in finite time. For an open dense set of initial data, the present paper provides a detailed asymptotic description of the solution in a neighborhood of each singular point, where $|u_x|\to\infty$. The different structure of conservative and dissipative solutions is analyzed.
Several aspects of regularity theory for parabolic systems are investigated under the effect of random perturbations. The deterministic theory, when strict parabolicity is assumed, presents both classes of systems where all weak solutions are in fact more regular, and examples of systems with weak solutions which develop singularities in finite time. Our main result is the extension of a regularity result due to Kalita to the stochastic case. Concerning the examples with singular solutions (outside the setting of Kalita's regularity result), we do not know whether stochastic noise may prevent …
Blow-up in second and fourth order semi-linear parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) is considered in bounded regions of one, two and three spatial dimensions with uniform initial data. A phenomenon whereby singularities form at multiple points simultaneously is exhibited and explained by means of a singular perturbation theory. In the second order case we pre- dict that points furthest from the boundary are selected by the dynamics of the PDE for singularity. In the fourth order case, singularities can form simultaneously at multiple locations, even in one spatial dimension. In two …

We extend in this paper the definition of Caputo derivatives of order in $(0,1)$ to a certain class of locally integrable functions using a convolution group. Our strategy is to define a fractional calculus for a certain class of distributions using the convolution group. When acting on causal functions, this fractional calculus agrees with the traditional Riemann-Liouville definition for $t>0$ but includes some singularities at $t=0$ so that the group property holds. Then, making use of this fractional calculus, we introduce the generalized definition of Caputo derivatives. The new definition…
