We show that a subspace $S$ of the space of real analytical functions on a manifold that satisfies certain regularity properties is contained in the set of solutions of a linear elliptic differential equation. The regularity properties are that $S$ is closed in $L^2(M)$ and that if a sequence of functions $f_n$ in $S$ converges in $L^2(M)$, then so do the partial derivatives of the functions $f_n$.
Let $G$ be a connected compact Lie group. We study the heat operator of a $G$-transversally elliptic operator. After we review the spectral properties of a $G$-transversally elliptic operator, we define the character, that is a distribution on $G$ generalizing the trace of the heat operator to the $G$-equivariant case. The main theorem of this paper gives the estimate of $f_α(t)$, which essentially determines the convergence of the character.
In this paper we consider a singular elliptic equation involving the GJMS (Graham-Jenne-Mason-Sparling) operator of order k on n-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold with 2k<n. Mutiplicity and nonexistence results are established.
We prove the Reilly formula for a class of elliptic divergence differential operator $L_Au=div(A\nabla u)$, where $A$ is a (1,1)-Codazzi tensor field. Then we get some estimates for the first positive eigenvalue of the operator.
This is an expository paper which gives a proof of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for elliptic operators. Specifcally, we compute the geometric K-cycle that corresponds to the analytic K-cycle determined by the operator. This paper and its companion ("K-homology and index theory II: Dirac Operators") was written to clear up basic points about index theory that are generally accepted as valid, but for which no proof has been published. Some of these points are needed for the solution of the Heisenberg-elliptic index problem in our paper "K-homology and index theory on contact manifolds" Acta. …
In this paper, we study eigenvalue of linear fourth order elliptic operators in divergence form with Dirichlet boundary condition on a bounded domain in a compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary (possibly empty) and find a general inequality for them. As an application, by using this inequality, we study eigenvalues of this operator on compact domains of complete submanifolds in a Euclidean space.
Mathai, Melrose, and Singer introduced the notion of projective elliptic operators on manifolds equipped with an Azumaya bundle. In this note we compute the equivariant index of transversally elliptic operators that are the pullback of projective elliptic operators on the trivialization of the Azumaya bundle. It encompasses the fractional index formula of projective elliptic operator by Mathai-Melrose-Singer.
In this note the fractional analytic index, for a projective elliptic operator associated to an Azumaya bundle, of DG/0402329 is related to the equivariant index of Atiyah and Singer for an associated transversally elliptic operator.
In this paper we introduce and study a new Kelvin-type transform in the anisotropic setting. In particular, we deal with semilinear and quasilinear anisotropic elliptic problems in the entire space.
The purpose of this note is to extend the results of V. Guillemin on elliptic self-adjoint pseudodifferential operators of order one, from operators defined on smooth functions on a closed manifold to operators defined on smooth sections in a vector bundle of Hilbert modules of finite type over a finite von Neumann algebra.
We present some applications of ideas from partial differential equations and differential geometry to the study of difference equations on infinite graphs. All operators that we consider are examples of "elliptic operators" as defined by Y. Colin de Verdiere. For such operators, we discuss analogs of inequalities of Cheeger and Harnack and of the maximum principle (in both elliptic and parabolic versions), and apply them to study spectral theory, the ground state and the heat semigroup associated to these operators.
The purpose of this note is to provide a short cut presentation of a Mayer-Vietoris formula due to Burghelea-Friedlander-Kappeler for the regularized determinant in the case of elliptic operators of Laplace Beltrami type in the form typically needed in applications to torsion.
We study boundary value problems for first-order elliptic differential operators on manifolds with compact boundary. The adapted boundary operator need not be selfadjoint and the boundary condition need not be pseudo-local. We show the equivalence of various characterisations of elliptic boundary conditions and demonstrate how the boundary conditions traditionally considered in the literature fit in our framework. The regularity of the solutions up to the boundary is proven. We show that imposing elliptic boundary conditions yields a Fredholm operator if the manifold is compact. We provide exa…
In this note we establish the large time non-negativity of the heat kernel for a class of elliptic differential operators on closed, Riemannian manifolds, and apply this result to a problem from conformal differential geometry.
In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of second-order uniformly elliptic operators on weighted Riemannian manifolds. They naturally emerge when studying spectral properties of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on families of manifolds with rapidly oscillating metrics. We appeal to the notion of H-convergence introduced by Murat and Tartar. In our main result we establish an H-compactness result that applies to elliptic operators with measurable, uniformly elliptic coefficients on weighted Riemannian manifolds. We further discuss the special case of ``locally periodic'' coefficients and st…
The paper concerns singular solutions of nonlinear elliptic equations, which include removable singularities for viscosity solutions, a strengthening of the Hopf Lemma including parabolic equations, Strong maximum principle and Hopf Lemma for viscosity solutions including also parabolic equations.
In 1996, Berline and Vergne gave a cohomological formula for the index of a transversally elliptic operator. In this paper we propose a new point of view where the cohomological formulae make use of equivariant Chern characters with generalized coefficients and with compact suppport. This kind of Chern characters was studied by the authors in a previous paper (see arXiv:0801.2822).
The main result of the paper is Egorov's theorem for transversally elliptic operators on compact foliated manifolds. This theorem is applied to describe the noncommutative geodesic flow in noncommutative geometry of Riemannian foliations.
We show that an elliptic uniform pseudodifferential operator over a manifold of bounded geometry defines a class in uniform K-homology, and that this class only depends on the principal symbol of the operator.
We show that one can define a spectral curve for the Cauchy-Riemann operator on a punctured elliptic curve if one imposes appropriate boundary conditions. Algebraic curves of the type thus obtained appear as irreducible components of spectral curves of minimal tori with planar ends in R^3. It appears that these curves coincide with the spectral curves of certain elliptic KP solitons as studied by Krichever.
We give background which shows the connection between the mean value theorem and the obstacle problem, and then we prove that a set is a mean value set for an elliptic operator of the form $Lu := \partial_i (a^{ij}(x) \partial_j u(x))$ if and only if it arises as the noncontact set of an obstacle problem involving the Green's function of the operator.
This paper is being replaced by another of the author's that contains a brief summary of the problem of positivity of Green's functions, heat kernels, and principal eigenvalues of higher-order elliptic differential operators.
Adapting the method of Andrews-Clutterbuck we prove an eigenvalue gap theorem for a class of non symmetric second order linear elliptic operators on a convex domain in euclidean space. The class of operators includes the Bakry-Emery laplacian with potential and any operator with second order term the laplacian whose first order terms have coefficients with compact support in the open domain. The eigenvalue gap is bounded below by the gap of an associated Sturm-Liouville problem on a closed interval.
The relative index theorem is proved for general first-order elliptic operators that are complete and coercive at infinity over measured manifolds. This extends the original result by Gromov-Lawson for generalised Dirac operators as well as the result of Bär-Ballmann for Dirac-type operators. The theorem is seen through the point of view of boundary value problems, using the graphical decomposition of elliptically regular boundary conditions for general first-order elliptic operators due to Bär-Bandara. Splitting, decomposition and the Phi-relative index theorem are proved on route to the rela…
We construct bundles of modules of vertex operator algebras, and prove the rigidity and vanishing theorem for the Dirac operator on loop space twisted by such bundles. This result generalizes many previous results.
We prove a formula for the multiplicities of the index of an equivariant transversally elliptic operator on a $G$-manifold. The formula is a sum of integrals over blowups of the strata of the group action and also involves eta invariants of associated elliptic operators. Among the applications, we obtain an index formula for basic Dirac operators on Riemannian foliations, a problem that was open for many years.
An elliptic theory is constructed for operators acting in subspaces defined via odd pseudodifferential projections. Subspaces of this type arise as Calderon subspaces for first order elliptic differential operators on manifolds with boundary, or as spectral subspaces for self-adjoint elliptic differential operators of odd order. Index formulas are obtained for operators in odd subspaces on closed manifolds and for general boundary value problems. We prove that the eta-invariant of operators of odd order on even-dimesional manifolds is a dyadic rational number.
We introduce a new elliptic operator on null hypersurfaces of four-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds. This operator depends on the first and second fundamental forms of the sections of a foliation of the null hypersurface and its novelty originates from its covariant transformation under change of foliation. It thus provides at any point an elliptic structure intimately connected with the geometry of the null hypersurface, independent of the choice of a specific section through that point. No analytic or algebraic symmetries or other conditions are imposed on the metric. The spectral properties…
The spectral eta-invariant of a self-adjoint elliptic differential operator on a closed manifold is rigid, provided that the parity of the order is opposite to the parity of dimension of the manifold. The paper deals with the calculation of the fractional part of the eta-invariant in this case. The method used to obtain the corresponding formula is based on the index theorem for elliptic operators in subspaces. It also utilizes K-theory with coefficients Z_n. In particular, it is shown that the group K(T^*M,Z_n) is realized by elliptic operators (symbols) acting in appropriate subspaces.
