Thurston's ending lamination conjecture proposes that a finitely generated Kleinian group is uniquely determined (up to isometry) by the topology of its quotient and a list of invariants that describe the asymptotic geometry of its ends. We present a proof of this conjecture for punctured-torus groups. These are free two-generator Kleinian groups with parabolic commutator, which should be thought of as representations of the fundamental group of a punctured torus. The universal Cannon--Thurston maps and the boundary of the curve complex

In genus two and higher, the fundamental group of a closed surface acts naturally on the curve complex of the surface with one puncture. Combining ideas from previous work of Kent--Leininger--Schleimer and Mitra, we construct a universal Cannon--Thurston map from a subset of the circle at infinity for the closed surface group onto the boundary of the curve complex of the once-punctured surface. Using the techniques we have developed, we also show that the boundary of this curve complex is locally path-connected.

On hyperbolic once-punctured-torus bundles III: Comparing two tessellations of the complex plane

To each once-punctured-torus bundle, $T_ϕ$, over the circle with pseudo-Anosov monodromy $ϕ$, there are associated two tessellations of the complex plane: one, $Δ(ϕ)$, is (the projection from $\infty$ of) the triangulation of a horosphere at $\infty$ induced by the canonical decomposition into ideal tetrahedra, and the other, $CW(ϕ)$, is a fractal tessellation given by the Cannon-Thurston map of the fiber group switching back and forth between gray and white each time it passes through $\infty$. In this paper, we study the relation between $Δ(ϕ)$ and $CW(ϕ)$.

Monodromy groups of $\mathbb{C}\mathrm{P}^1$-structures on punctured surfaces

For a punctured surface $S$, we characterize the representations of its fundamental group into $\mathrm{PSL}_2 (\mathbb{C})$ that arise as the monodromy of a meromorphic projective structure on $S$ with poles of order at most two and no apparent singularities. This proves the analogue of a theorem of Gallo-Kapovich-Marden concerning $\mathbb{C}\mathrm{P}^1$-structures on closed surfaces, and settles a long-standing question about characterizing monodromy groups for the Schwarzian equation on punctured spheres. Bending Fuchsian representations of fundamental groups of cusped surfaces in PU(2,1)

We describe a family of representations of $π_1(Σ)$ in PU(2,1), where $Σ$ is a hyperbolic Riemann surface with at least one deleted point. This family is obtained by a bending process associated to an ideal triangulation of $Σ$. We give an explicit description of this family by describing a coordinates system in the spirit of shear coordinates on the Teichmüller space. Braid groups are almost co-Hopfian

Let B_n be the braid group on n > 3 strands. We prove that B_n modulo its center is co-Hopfian. We then show that any injective endomorphism of B_n is geometric in the sense that it is induced by a homeomorphism of a punctured disk. We further prove that any injection from B_n to B_n+1 is geometric. Additionally, we obtain analogous results for mapping class groups of punctured spheres. The methods use Thurston's theory of surface homeomorphisms and build upon work of Ivanov and McCarthy.

Pleating invariants for punctured torus groups

In this paper we give a complete description of the space $ \QF $ of quasifuchsian punctured torus groups in terms of what we call {\em pleating invariants}. These are natural invariants of the boundary $\bch$ of the convex core of the associated hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ and give coordinates for the non-Fuchsian groups $\QF - \F$. The pleating invariants of a component of $\bch$ consist of the projective class of its bending measure, together with the lamination length of a fixed choice of transverse measure in this class. Meromorphic projective structures, grafting and the monodromy map

A meromorphic projective structure on a punctured Riemann surface $X\setminus P$ is determined, after fixing a standard projective structure on $X$, by a meromorphic quadratic differential with poles of order three or more at each puncture in $P$. In this article we prove the analogue of Thurston's grafting theorem for such meromorphic projective structures, that involves grafting crowned hyperbolic surfaces.
