The present paper proves that if for a power sum $α$ over $\ZZ$ the length of the period of the continued fraction for $\sqrt{α(n)}$ is constant for infinitely many even (resp. odd) $n$, then $\sqrt{α(n)}$ admits a functional continued fraction expansion for all even (resp. odd) $n$, except finitely many; in particular, for such $n$, the partial quotients can be expressed by power sums of the same kind.
We state and prove three general formulas allowing to transform formal finite sums into formal continued fractions and apply them to generalize certain expansions in continued fractions given by Hone and Varona.
The classical Dedekind sums $s(d, c)$ can be represented as sums over the partial quotients of the continued fraction expansion of the rational $\frac{d}{c}$. Hardy sums, the analog integer-valued sums arising in the transformation of the logarithms of $θ$-functions under a subgroup of the modular group, have been shown to satisfy many properties which mirror the properties of the classical Dedekind sums. The representation as sums of partial quotients has, however, been missing so far. We define non-classical continued fractions and prove that Hardy sums can be expressed as a sums of partial …
Generalizing a result of Pourchet, we prove that, if $α,β$ are power sums satisfying suitable conditions, the length of the continued fraction of the ratio $α(n)/β(n)$ tends to infinity with $n$.
The problem of representing a given positive integer as a sum of four squares of integers has been widely concerned for a long time, and for a given positive odd $n$ one can find a representation by doing arithmetic in a maximal order of quaternion algebra once a pair of (positive) integers $x,y$ with $x^2+y^2\equiv-1\mod n$ is given. In this paper, we introduce a new method to find a representation of odd integer $w$ given $x,y$ satisfying the above requirement. This method can avoid the complicated non-commutative structure in quaternion algebra, which is similar to the one we use to obtain …
In this paper we study certain real functions defined in a very simple way by Zagier as sums of infinite powers of quadratic polynomials with integer coefficients. These functions give the even parts of the period polynomials of the modular forms which are the coefficients in Fourier expansion of the kernel function for Shimura-Shintani correspondence. We prove two conjectures of Zagier showing that the sums converge exponentially. We also prove unexpected results on the representation of these functions as sums over simple or reduced quadratic forms and the positive or negative continued frac…
In this note, we study the problem of existence of sequences of consecutive 1's in the periodic part of the continued fractions expansions of square roots of primes. We prove unconditionally that, for a given $N\gg 1$, there are at least $N\log^{-3/2}N$ prime numbers $p\leq N$ such that the continued fraction expansion of $\sqrt{p}$ contains three consecutive 1's on the beginning of the periodic part. We also present results of our computations related to the considered problem and some related problems, formulate several open questions and conjectures and get some results under the assumption…
In 1985, Robbins observed by computer the continued fraction expansion of certain algebraic power series over a finite field. Incidentally, he came across a particular equation of degree 4 in characteristic p=13. This equation has an analogue for all primes p>=5. There are two patterns for the continued fraction of the solution of this equation, according to the residue of p modulo 3. We describe this pattern in the first case, considering especially p=7 and p=13. in the second case we only give indications.
In this paper we consider error sums of the form \[\sum_{m=0}^{\infty} \varepsilon_m\Big( \,b_mα- \frac{a_m}{c_m}\,\Big) \,,\] where $α$ is a real number, $a_m$, $b_m$, $c_m$ are integers, and $\varepsilon_m=1$ or $\varepsilon_m ={(-1)}^m$. In particular, we investigate such sums for \[α\in \big\{ π, e,e^{1/2},e^{1/3},\dots, \log (1+t), ζ(2), ζ(3) \big\} \] and exhibit some connections between rational coefficients occurring in error sums for Apéry's continued fraction for $ζ(2)$ and well-known integer sequences. The concept of the paper generalizes the theory of ordinary error sums, which are…
Starting from a classical generating series for Bessel functions due to Schlomilch, we use Dwork's relative dual theory to broadly generalize unit-root results of Dwork on Kloosterman sums and Sperber on hyperkloosterman sums. In particular, we express the (unique) p-adic unit root of an arbitrary exponential sum on the torus in terms of special values of the p-adic analytic continuation of a ratio of A-hypergeometric functions. In contrast with the earlier works, we use noncohomological methods and obtain results that are valid for arbitrary exponential sums without any hypothesis of nondegen…
The purpose of this paper is to construct p-adic analytically continued function which interpolates q-Euler numbers at negative integer Finally, we give an explicit p-adic expansion as a power series in n.
Consider the $m$-th roots of unity in {\bf C}, where $m>0$ is an integer. We address the following question: For what values of $n$ can one find $n$ such $m$-th roots of unity (with repetitions allowed) adding up to zero? We prove that the answer is exactly the set of linear combinations with non-negative integer coefficients of the prime factors of $m$.
We prove that for all $q>61$, every non-zero element in the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ can be written as a linear combination of two primitive roots of $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. This resolves a conjecture posed by Cohen and Mullen.
Recently, the explicit evaluation of Gauss sums in the index 2 and 4 cases have been given in several papers (see [2,3,7,8]). In the course of evaluation, the sigh (or unit root) ambiguities are unavoidably occurred. This paper presents another method, different from [7] and [8], to determine the sigh (unit root) ambiguities of Gauss sums in the index 2 case, as well as the ones with odd order in the non-cyclic index 4 case. And we note that the method in this paper are more succinct and effective than [8] and [7].
In this paper we study the properties of an algorithm for generating continued fractions in the field of p-adic numbers $\mathbb{Q}_p$. First of all, we obtain an analogue of the Galois' Theorem for classical continued fractions. Then, we investigate the length of the preperiod for periodic expansions of square roots. Finally, we prove that there exist infinitely many square roots of integers in $\mathbb{Q}_p$ that have a periodic expansion with period of length four, solving an open problem left by Browkin.
For a given positive integers $m$ and $\ell$, we give a complete list of positive integers $n$ for which their exist $m$th roots of unity $x_1,\dots,x_n \in \mathbb{C}$ such that $x_1^{\ell} + \cdots + x_n^{\ell}=0$. This extends the earlier result of Lam and Leung on vanishing sums of roots of unity. Furthermore, we prove that for which integers $n$ with $2 \leq n \leq m$, there are distinct $m$th roots of unity $x_1,\dots,x_n \in \mathbb{C}$ such that $x_1^{\ell} + \cdots + x_n^{\ell}=0$.
The L-function of symmetric powers of classical Kloosterman sums is a polynomial whose degree is now known, as well as the complex absolute values of the roots. In this paper, we provide estimates for the p-adic absolute values of these roots. Our method is indirect. We first develop a Dwork-type p-adic cohomology theory for the two-variable infinite symmetric power L-function associated to the Kloosterman family, and then study p-adic estimates of the eigenvalues of Frobenius. A continuity argument then provides the desired p-adic estimates.
We show that a certain two-dimensional family of Weyl sums of length $P$ takes values as large as $P^{3/4 + o(1)}$ on almost all linear slices of the unit torus, contradicting a widely held expectation that Weyl sums should exhibit square-root cancellation on generic subvarieties of the unit torus. This is an extension of a result of J. Brandes, S. T. Parsell, C. Poulias, G. Shakan and R. C. Vaughan (2020) from quadratic and cubic monomials to general polynomials of arbitrary degree. The new ingredients of our approach are the classical results of E. Bombieri (1966) on exponential sums along a…
We examine the sums $S(k,\,n)$ of the $k-$th powers of the $ϕ(n)$ integers $α_1<α_2<\cdots<α_{ϕ(n)}$ less than and prime to $n$ (Euler set) and prove a formula (new) for $S(3,\,n)$. If $n$ equals a prime $p$, we prove a theorem showing a connection of $S(3,\,p)$ with Artin's conjectural constant for primitive roots and with other functions involving primes.
Let $c_1(x),c_2(x),f_1(x),f_2(x)$ be polynomials with rational coefficients. With obvious exceptions, there can be at most finitely many roots of unity among the zeros of the polynomials $c_1(x)f_1(x)^n+c_2(x)f_2(x)^n$ with $n=1,2\ldots$. We estimate the orders of these roots of unity in terms of the degrees and the heights of the polynomials $c_i$ and $f_i$.
We discuss a possible generalisation of a conjecture of Bley, Burns and Hahn concerning the relation between the second Adams-operator twisted Galois-Gauss sums of weakly ramified Artin characters and the square root of the inverse different of finite, odd degree, Galois extensions of number fields, to the setting of all finite Galois extensions of number fields for which a square root of the inverse different exists. We also extend the key methods and results of Bley, Burns and Hahn to this more general setting and, by combining these methods with a recent result of Agboola, Burns, Caputo and…
Motivated by questions in number theory, Myerson asked how small the sum of 5 complex nth roots of unity can be. We obtain a uniform bound of O(n^{-4/3}) by perturbing the vertices of a regular pentagon, improving to O(n^{-7/3}) infinitely often. The corresponding configurations were suggested by examining exact minimum values computed for n <= 221000. These minima can be explained at least in part by selection of the best example from multiple families of competing configurations related to close rational approximations.
We present new estimates for sums of the divisor function, and other similar arithmetic functions, in short intervals over function fields. (When the intervals are long, one obtains a good estimate from the Riemann hypothesis.) We obtain an estimate that approaches square root cancellation as long as the characteristic of the finite field is relatively large. This is done by a geometric method, inspired by work of Hast and Matei, where we calculate the singular locus of a variety whose $\mathbb F_q$-points control this sum. This has applications to highly unbalanced moments of $L$-functions.
Periodic integer continued fractions (PICFs) are generalization of the regular periodic continued fractions (RPCFs). It is classical that a RPCF expansion of an irrational number is unique. However, it is no longer unique for a PICF expansion. Hence it is a natural problem to determine all PICF expansions of irrational numbers. In this paper, we determine certain type PICF expansions of square roots of positive square-free integers. To obtain this result, it plays an important role to determine integer points on certain PCF varieties appeared in Brock-Elkies-Jordan. As an application of these …
The aim of this paper is to study the convergence and divergence of the Rogers-Ramanujan and the generalized Rogers-Ramanujan continued fractions on the unit circle. We provide an example of an uncountable set of measure zero on which the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction $R(x)$ diverges and which enlarges a set previously found by Bowman and Mc Laughlin. We further study the generalized Rogers-Ramanujan continued fractions $R_a(x)$ for roots of unity $a$ and give explicit convergence and divergence conditions. As such, we extend some work of Huang towards a question originally investigated …
For integers $m \geq 2$, we study divergent continued fractions whose numerators and denominators in each of the $m$ arithmetic progressions modulo $m$ converge. Special cases give, among other things, an infinite sequence of divergence theorems, the first of which is the classical Stern-Stolz theorem. We give a theorem on a general class of Poincar{é} type recurrences which shows that they tend to limits when the limits are taken in residue classes and the roots of their characteristic polynomials are distinct roots of unity. We also generalize a curious $q$-continued fraction of Ramanujan's …
We study the minimal number of variables required by a totally positive definite diagonal universal quadratic form over a real quadratic field $\mathbb Q(\sqrt D)$ and obtain lower and upper bounds for it in terms of certain sums of coefficients of the associated continued fraction. We also estimate such sums in terms of $D$ and establish a link between continued fraction expansions and special values of $L$-functions in the spirit of Kronecker's limit formula.
For a prime $p$ and an integer $u$ with $\gcd(u,p)=1$, we define Fermat quotients by the conditions $$ q_p(u) \equiv \frac{u^{p-1} -1}{p} \pmod p, \qquad 0 \le q_p(u) \le p-1. $$ D. R. Heath-Brown has given a bound of exponential sums with $N$ consecutive Fermat quotients that is nontrivial for $N\ge p^{1/2+ε}$ for any fixed $ε>0$. We use a recent idea of M. Z. Garaev together with a form of the large sieve inequality due to S. Baier and L. Zhao, to show that on average over $p$ one can obtain a nontrivial estimate for much shorter sums starting with $N\ge p^ε$. We also obtain lower bounds on …
In an earlier work, the authors have determined all possible weights $n$ for which there exists a vanishing sum $ζ_1+\cdots +ζ_n=0$ of $m$th roots of unity $ζ_i$ in characteristic 0. In this paper, the same problem is studied in finite fields of characteristic $p$. For given $m$ and $p$, results are obtained on integers $n_0$ such that all integers $n\geq n_0$ are in the ``weight set'' $W_p(m)$. The main result $(1.3)$ in this paper guarantees, under suitable conditions, the existence of solutions of $x_1^d+\cdots+x_n^d=0$ with all coordinates not equal to zero over a finite field.
We obtain a new bound of certain double multiplicative character sums. We use this bound together with some other previously obtained results to obtain new algorithms for finding roots of polynomials modulo a prime $p$.
In this paper the properties of Rédei rational functions are used to derive rational approximations for square roots and both Newton and Padé approximations are given as particular cases. As a consequence, such approximations can be derived directly by power matrices. Moreover, Rédei rational functions are introduced as convergents of particular periodic continued fractions and are applied for approximating square roots in the field of p-adic numbers and to study periodic representations. Using the results over the real numbers, we show how to construct periodic continued fractions and approxi…
We construct a class of quadratic irrationals having continued fractions of period $n\geq2$ with "small" partial quotients for which certain integer multiples have continued fractions of period $1$, $2$ or $4$ with "large" partial quotients. We then show that numbers in the period of the new continued fraction are simple functions of the numbers in the periods of the original continued fraction. We give generalizations of some of the continued fractions and show that polynomials arising from the generalizations are related to Chebyshev and Fibonacci polynomials. We then show that some of these…
It is known that the continued fraction expansion of a real number is periodic if and only if the number is a quadratic irrational. In an attempt to generalize this phenomenon to other settings, Jun-Ichi Tamura and Shin-Ichi Yasutomi have developed a new algorithm for multidimensional continued fractions (Algebraic Jacobi-Perron algorithm) that involves cubic irrationals, and proved periodicity in some cubic number fields, such as $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[3]{m^3+1})$ where $m\in\mathbb{Z}$, and $\mathbb{Q}(δ_m)$ where $δ_m$ is a root of $x^3-mx+1=0,\,\,m\in\mathbb{Z},\,\, m\geq3$ with the algorithm. …
We detail the continued fraction expansion of the square root of monic sextic polynomials. We note in passing that each line of the expansion corresponds to addition of the divisor at infinity, and interpret the data yielded by the general expansion. In particular we obtain an associated Somos sequence defined by a three-term recurrence relation of gap~6.
Let $[a_1(x),a_2(x),\ldots, a_n(x), \ldots]$ be the continued fraction expansion of an irrational number $x\in (0, 1)$. The study of the growth rate of the product of consecutive partial quotients $a_n(x)a_{n+1}(x)$ is associated with the improvements to Dirichlet's theorem (1842). We establish both the weak and strong laws of large numbers for the partial sums $S_n(x)= \sum_{i=1}^n a_i(x)a_{i+1}(x)$ as well as, from a multifractal analysis point of view, investigate its increasing rate. Specifically, we prove the following results: \medskip \begin{itemize} \item For any $ε>0$, the Lebesgue me…
We define certain higher-dimensional Dedekind sums that generalize the classical Dedekind-Rademacher sums, and show how to compute them effectively using a generalization of the continued-fraction algorithm. We present two applications. First, we show how to express special values of partial zeta functions associated to totally real number fields in terms of these sums via the Eisenstein cocycle introduced by the second author. Hence we obtain a polynomial-time algorithm for computing these special values. Second, we show how to use our techniques to compute certain special values of the Witte…

We detail the continued fraction expansion of the square root of the general monic quartic polynomial, noting that each line of the expansion corresponds to addition of the divisor at infinity. We analyse the data yielded by the general expansion. In that way we obtain `elliptic sequences' satisfying Somos relations. I mention several new results on such sequences. The paper includes a detailed `reminder exposition' on continued fractions of quadratic irrationals in function fields.
We introduce certain lattice sums associated with hyperplane arrangements, which are (multiple) sums running over integers, and can be regarded as generalizations of certain linear combinations of zeta-functions of root systems. We also introduce generating functions of special values of those lattice sums, and study their properties by virtue of the theory of convex polytopes. Consequently we evaluate special values of those lattice sums, especially certain special values of zeta-functions of root systems and their affine analogues. In some special cases it is possible to treat sums running o…
We examine various properties of the continued fraction expansions of matrix eigenvector slopes of matrices from the SL(2, Z) group. We calculate the average period length, maximum period length, average period sum, maximum period sum and the distributions of 1s 2s and 3s in the periods versus the radius of the Ball within which the matrices are located. We also prove that the periods of continued fraction expansions from the real irrational roots of x2 + px + q = 0 are always palindromes.
We present two families of automatic sequences that define algebraic continued fractions in characteristic $2$. The period-doubling sequence belongs to the first first family $\mathcal{P}$; and its sum, the Thue-Morse sequence, belongs to the second family $\mathcal{G}$. The family $\mathcal{G}$ contains all the iterated sums of sequences from the $\mathcal{P}$ and more.
We consider sums of oscillating functions on intervals in cyclic groups of size close to the square root of the size of the group. We first prove non-trivial estimates for intervals of length slightly larger than this square root (bridging the "Polyá-Vinogradov gap" in some sense) for bounded functions with bounded Fourier transforms. We then prove that the existence of non-trivial estimates for ranges slightly below the square-root bound is stable under the discrete Fourier transform, and we give applications related to trace functions over finite fields.
We construct an absolutely normal number whose continued fraction expansion is normal in the sense that it contains all finite patterns of partial quotients with the expected asymptotic frequency as given by the Gauss-Kuzmin measure. The construction is based on ideas of Sierpinski and uses a large deviations theorem for sums of mixing random variables.
It follows from the work of Artin and Hooley that, under assumption of the generalized Riemann hypothesis, the density of the set of primes $q$ for which a given non-zero rational number $r$ is a primitive root modulo $q$ can be written as an infinite product $\prod_p δ_p$ of local factors $δ_p$ reflecting the degree of the splitting field of $X^p-r$ at the primes $p$, multiplied by a somewhat complicated factor that corrects for the `entanglement' of these splitting fields. We show how the correction factors arising in Artin's original primitive root problem and some of its generalizations ca…
Euler gave recipes for converting alternating series of two types, I and II, into equivalent continued fractions, i.e., ones whose convergents equal the partial sums. A condition we prove for irrationality of a continued fraction then allows easy proofs that $e,\sin1$, and the primorial constant are irrational. Our main result is that, if a series of type II is equivalent to a simple continued fraction, then the sum is transcendental and its irrationality measure exceeds $2$. We construct all $\aleph_0^{\aleph_0}=\mathfrak{c}$ such series and recover the transcendence of the Davison--Shallit a…
Let $q$ be a prime, $P \geq 1$ and let $N_q(P)$ denote the number of rational primes $p \leq P$ that split in the imaginary quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-q})$. The first part of this paper establishes various unconditional and conditional (under existence of a Siegel zero) lower bounds for $N_q(P)$ in the range $q^{1/4+\varepsilon} \leq P \leq q$, for any fixed $\varepsilon>0$. This improves upon what is implied by work of Pollack and Benli-Pollack. The second part of this paper is dedicated to proving an estimate for a bilinear form involving Weyl sums for modular square roots (equivalen…
Sums of the form $\sum_{n\le x}E^k(n) (k\in{\bf N}$ fixed) are investigated, where $$ E(T) = \int_0^T|ζ(1/2+it)|^2 dt - T\Bigl(\log {T\over2π} + 2γ-1\Bigr)$$ is the error term in the mean square formula for $|ζ(1/2+it)|$. The emphasis is on the case k=1, which is more difficult than the corresponding sum for the divisor problem. The analysis requires bounds for the irrationality measure of ${\rm e}^{2πm}$ and for the partial quotients in its continued fraction expansion.
