Let K be a number field, and let lambda(x,t)\in K[x, t] be irreducible over K(t). Using algebraic geometry and group theory, we study the set of alpha\in K for which the specialized polynomial lambda(x,alpha) is K-reducible. We apply this to show that for any fixed n>=10 and for any number field K, all but finitely many K-specializations of the degree n generalized Laguerre polynomial are K-irreducible and have Galois group S_n. In conjunction with the theory of complex multiplication, we also show that for any K and for any n>=53, all but finitely many of the K-specializations of the modular equation Phi_n(x, t) are K-irreducible and have Galois group containing PSL_2(Z/n).
We investigate specializations of infinite families of regular Galois extensions over number fields. The problem to what extent the local behaviour of specializations of one single regular Galois extension can be prescribed has been investigated by Dèbes and Ghazi in the unramified case, and by Legrand, Neftin and the author in general. Here, we generalize these results and give a partial solution to Grunwald problems using Galois extensions arising as specializations of a family of regular Galois extensions.
In this note, we apply Moriwaki's arithmetic height functions to obtain an analogue of Silverman's Specialization Theorem for families of Abelian varieties over $K$, where $K$ is any field finitely generated over ${\Q}$.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the number of classical weight one specializations of a non-CM ordinary Hida family of parallel weight Hilbert cusp forms. It is known that a specialization of a primitive ordinary Hida family at any arithmetic points of weight at least two is a classical holomorphic Hilbert cusp form. However, this is not always the case for weight one specializations. Balasubramanyam, Ghate and Vatsal proved that such a Hida family admits infinitely many classical weight one specializations if and only if it is of CM type. We give an explicit upper bound on the num…
Hilbert specialization is an important tool in Field Arithmetic and Arithmetic Geometry, which has usually been intended for polynomials, hence hypersurfaces, and at scalar values. In this article, first, we extend this tool to prime ideals, hence affine varieties, and offer an application to the study of the irreducibility of the intersection of varieties. Then, encouraged by recent results, we consider the more general situation in which the specialization is done at polynomial values, instead of scalar values.
For a polynomial $F(t,A_1,\ldots,A_n)\in\mathbf{F}_p[t,A_1,\ldots,A_n]$ ($p$ being a prime number) we study the factorization statistics of its specializations $$F(t,a_1,\ldots,a_n)\in\mathbf{F}_p[t]$$ with $(a_1,\ldots,a_n)\in S$, where $S\subset\mathbf{F}_p^n$ is a subset, in the limit $p\to\infty$ and $\mathrm{deg} F$ fixed. We show that for a sufficiently large and regular subset $S\subset\mathbf{F}_p^n$, e.g. a product of $n$ intervals of length $H_1,\ldots,H_n$ with $\prod_{i=1}^nH_n>p^{n-1/2+ε}$, the factorization statistics is the same as for unrestricted specializations (i.e. $S=\math…
We provide applications to studying the behavior of Selmer groups under specialization. We consider Selmer groups associated to four dimensional Galois representations coming from (i) the tensor product of two cuspidal Hida families $F$ and $G$, (ii) its cyclotomic deformation, (iii) the tensor product of a cusp form $f$ and the Hida family $G$, where $f$ is a classical specialization of $F$ with weight $k \geq 2$. We prove control theorems to relate (a) the Selmer group associated to the tensor product of Hida families $F$ and $G$ to the Selmer group associated to its cyclotomic deformation a…

We prove the conjectured compatibility of $p$-adic fundamental lines with specializations at motivic points for a wide class of $p$-adic families of $p$-adic Galois representations (for instance, the families which arise from $p$-adic families of automorphic representations of the unit group of a quaternion algebra or of a totally definite unitary groups) and deduce the compatibility of the Equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjectures for them. However, we also show that fundamental lines are not compatible with arbitrary characteristic zero specializations with values in a domain in general. This …
We establish a version "over the ring" of the celebrated Hilbert Irreducibility Theorem. Given finitely many polynomials in $k+n$ variables, with coefficients in $\mathbb Z$, of positive degree in the last $n$ variables, we show that if they are irreducible over $\mathbb Z$ and satisfy a necessary "Schinzel condition", then the first $k$ variables can be specialized in a Zariski-dense subset of ${\mathbb Z}^k$ in such a way that irreducibility over ${\mathbb Z}$ is preserved for the polynomials in the remaining $n$ variables. The Schinzel condition, which comes from the Schinzel Hypothesis, is…
Let $t$ and $x$ be indeterminates, let $ϕ(x)=x^2+t\in\mathbb Q(t)[x]$, and for every positive integer $n$ let $Φ_n(t,x)$ denote the $n^{\text{th}}$ dynatomic polynomial of $ϕ$. Let $G_n$ be the Galois group of $Φ_n$ over the function field $\mathbb Q(t)$, and for $c\in\mathbb Q$ let $G_{n,c}$ be the Galois group of the specialized polynomial $Φ_n(c,x)$. It follows from Hilbert's irreducibility theorem that for fixed $n$ we have $G_n\cong G_{n,c}$ for every $c$ outside a thin set $E_n\subset\mathbb Q$. By earlier work of Morton (for $n=3$) and the present author (for $n=4$), it is known that $E…
Let K be a complete field of unequal characteristics $(0,p)$. The aim of this paper is to describe the the semi-stable models for covers $\bold P^1_K@>>>\bold P^1_K$ of degree p, unramified outside $r\leq p$ points and totally ramified above one of them, under the assumption that the ramified locus has a particular reduction type (which always occurs if $r\leq4$). We are principally concerned with the minimal semi-stable models which separate the ramified fibers.
We address some questions concerning indecomposable polynomials and their behaviour under specialization. For instance we give a bound on a prime $p$ for the reduction modulo $p$ of an indecomposable polynomial $P(x)\in \Zz[x]$ to remain indecomposable. We also obtain a Hilbert like result for indecomposability: if $f(t_1,...,t_r,x)$ is an indecomposable polynomial in several variables with coefficients in a field of characteristic $p=0$ or $p>°(f)$, then the one variable specialized polynomial $f(t_1^\ast+α_1^\ast x,...,t_r^\ast+α_r^\ast x,x)$ is indecomposable for all $(t_1^\ast, ..., t_r^\a…
The methods of classical invariant theory are used to construct generic polynomials for groups $S_5$ and $A_5$, along with explicit reductions to specializations of the generic polynomials defining any desired field extension with those groups.
Let $p\geq 5$ be a prime and $\ell\neq p$ be a prime not dividing the tame level of a $p$-ordinary Hida family. We prove that the actions of the Frobenius element at $\ell$ on the Galois representations attached to almost all arithmetic specializations are semisimple and non-scalar. If $k_f$ denotes the weight of a cusp form $f(z)= \sum_{n\geq 1} a_\ell(f) e^{2πi n z}$, then the inequality $$|a_\ell(f) | \leq 2 \ell^{(k_f-1)/2},$$ predicted by the Ramanujan conjecture, is a strict inequality for almost all members $f$ of the family.
We compute new polynomials with Galois group $M_{11}$ over $\mathbb{Q}(t)$. These polynomials stem from various families of covers of $\mathbb{P}^1\mathbb{C}$ ramified over at least 4 points. Each of these families has features that make a detailed study interesting. Some of the polynomials lead, via specialization, to number fields with very small discriminant or few ramified primes.
The Mahler measures of some n-variable polynomial families are given in terms of special values of the Riemann zeta function and a Dirichlet L-series, generalizing the results of \cite{L}. The technique introduced in this work also motivates certain identities among Bernoulli numbers and symmetric functions.
We develop a new strategy for studying low weight specializations of $p$-adic families of ordinary modular forms. In the elliptic case, we give a new proof of a result of Ghate--Vatsal which states that a Hida family contains infinitely many classical eigenforms of weight one if and only if it has complex multiplication. Our strategy is designed to explicitly avoid use of the related facts that the Galois representation attached to a classical weight one eigenform has finite image, and that classical weight one eigenforms satisfy the Ramanujan conjecture. We indicate how this strategy might be…
Given an irreducible bivariate polynomial $f(t,x)\in \mathbb{Q}[t,x]$, what groups $H$ appear as the Galois group of $f(t_0,x)$ for infinitely many $t_0\in \mathbb{Q}$? How often does a group $H$ as above appear as the Galois group of $f(t_0,x)$, $t_0\in \mathbb{Q}$? We give an answer for $f$ of large $x$-degree with alternating or symmetric Galois group over $\mathbb{Q}(t)$. This is done by determining the low genus subcovers of coverings $\tilde{X}\rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1_{\mathbb{C}}$ with alternating or symmetric monodromy groups.
Let $f$ be a newform of weight $2$, square-free level and trivial character, let $A_f$ be the abelian variety attached to $f$ and for every good ordinary prime $p$ for $f$ let $\boldsymbol f^{(p)}$ be the $p$-adic Hida family through $f$. We prove that, for all but finitely many primes $p$ as above, if $A_f$ is an elliptic curve such that $A_f(\mathbb Q)$ has rank $1$ and the $p$-primary part of the Shafarevich-Tate group of $A_f$ over $\mathbb Q$ is finite then all specializations of $\boldsymbol f^{(p)}$ of weight congruent to $2$ modulo $2(p-1)$ and trivial character have finite ($p$-primar…
André used Hodge-theoretic methods to show that in a smooth proper family X to B of varieties over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0, there exists a closed fiber having the same Picard number as the geometric generic fiber, even if k is countable. We give a completely different approach to André's theorem, which also proves the following refinement: in a family of varieties with good reduction at p, the locus on the base where the Picard number jumps is nowhere p-adically dense. Our proof uses the ``p-adic Lefschetz (1,1) theorem'' of Berthelot and Ogus, combined with an anal…
We address some questions concerning indecomposable polynomials and their spectrum. How does the spectrum behave via reduction or specialization, or via a more general ring morphism? Are the indecomposability properties equivalent over a field and over its algebraic closure? How many polynomials are decomposable over a finite field?
Fix an odd prime $p$. If $r$ is a positive integer and $f$ a polynomial with coefficients in $\mathbb{F}_{p^r}$, let $P_{p,r}(f)$ be the proportion of $\mathbb{P}^1(\mathbb{F}_{p^r})$ that is periodic with respect to $f$. We show that as $r$ increases, the expected value of $P_{p,r}(f)$, as $f$ ranges over quadratic polynomials, is less than $22/(\log{\log{p^r}})$. This result follows from a uniformity theorem on specializations of dynamical systems of rational functions over residually finite Dedekind domains. The specialization theorem generalizes previous work by Juul et al. that holds for …
This note concerns the theoretical algorithmic problem of counting rational points on curves over finite fields. It explicates how the algorithmic scheme introduced by Schoof and generalized by the author yields an algorithm whose running time is uniformly polynomial time for curves in families.
We study functional graphs generated by several quadratic polynomials, acting simultaneously on a finite field of odd characteristic. We obtain several results about the number of leaves in such graphs. In particular, in the case of graphs generated by three polynomials, we relate the distribution of leaves to the Sato-Tate distribution of Frobenius traces of elliptic curves. We also present extensive numerical results which we hope may shed some light on the distribution of leaves for larger families of polynomials.
We study the number of non-zero terms in two specific families of ternary cyclotomic polynomial, we find formulas for the number of terms by writing the cyclotomic polynomial as a sum of smaller sub-polynomials and study the properties of these polynomial.
Let $a(λ)$ and $b(λ)$ be two polynomials with coefficients in complex numbers and let $f_{\lamb$ be a one-parameter family of polynomials indexed by all complex numbers $λ$. We study whether there exist infinitely many complex numbers $λ$ such that both $a(λ)$ and $b(λ)$ are preperiodic for $f_λ$.
