We develop the theory of Hopf bimodules for a finite rigid tensor category C. Then we use this theory to define a distinguished invertible object D of C and an isomorphism of tensor functors ?^{**} and D tensor ^{**}? tensor D^{-1}. This provides a categorical generalization of D. Radford's S^4-formula for finite dimensional Hopf algebras and its generalizations for weak Hopf algebras and for quasi-Hopf algebras, and conjectured in general in \cite{EO}. When C is braided, we establish a connection between the above isomorphism and the Drinfeld isomorphism of C. We also show that a factorizable braided tensor category is unimodular (i.e., D=1). Finally, we apply our theory to prove that the pivotalization of a fusion category is spherical, and give a purely algebraic characterization of exact module categories.
We study the basic monoidal properties of the category of Hopf modules for a coquasi Hopf algebra. In particular we discuss the so called fundamental theorem that establishes a monoidal equivalence between the category of comodules and the category of Hopf modules. We present a categorical proof of Radford's $S^4$ formula for the case of a finite dimensional coquasi Hopf algebra, by establishing a monoidal isomorphism between certain double dual functors.
We obtain Morita invariant versions of Eilenberg-Watts type theorems, relating Deligne products of finite linear categories to categories of left exact as well as of right exact functors. This makes it possible to switch between different functor categories as well as Deligne products, which is often very convenient. For instance, we can show that applying the equivalence from left exact to right exact functors to the identity functor, regarded as a left exact functor, gives a Nakayama functor. The equivalences of categories we exhibit are compatible with the structure of module categories ove…
We generalize the notion of ends and coends in category theory to the realm of module categories over finite tensor categories. We call this new concept "module (co)end". This tool allows us to give different proofs to several known results in the theory of representations of finite tensor categories. As a new application, we present a description of the relative Serre functor for module categories in terms of a module coend, in a analogous way as a Morita invariant description of the Nakayama functor of abelian categories presented in [J. Fuchs, G. Schaumann and C. Schweigert, Eilenberg-Watts…
We introduce Nakayama functors for coalgebras and investigate their basic properties. These functors are expressed by certain (co)ends as in the finite case discussed by Fuchs, Schaumann, and Schweigert. This observation allows us to define Nakayama functors for Frobenius tensor categories in an intrinsic way. As applications, we establish the categorical Radford $S^4$-formula for Frobenius tensor categories and obtain some related results. These are generalizations of works of Etingof, Nikshych, and Ostrik on finite tensor categories and some known facts on co-Frobenius Hopf algebras.
With the motivation of giving a more precise estimation of the quantum Brauer group of a Hopf algebra $H$ over a field $k$ we construct an exact sequence containing the quantum Brauer group of a Hopf algebra in a certain braided monoidal category. Let $B$ be a Hopf algebra in $\C=_H ^H\YD$, the category of Yetter-Drinfel'd modules over $H$. We consider the quantum Brauer group $\BQ(\C; B)$ of $B$ in $\C$, which is isomorphic to the usual quantum Brauer group $\BQ(k; B\rtimes H)$ of the Radford biproduct Hopf algebra $B\rtimes H$. We show that under certain symmetricity condition on the braidin…
Hopf (bi-)modules and crossed modules over a bialgebra B in a braided monoidal category C are considered. The (braided) monoidal equivalence of both categories is proved provided B is a Hopf algebra (with invertible antipode). Bialgebra projections and Hopf bimodule bialgebras over a Hopf algebra in C are found to be isomorphic categories. As a consequence a generalization of the Radford-Majid criterion for a braided Hopf algebra to be a cross product is obtained. The results of this paper turn out to be fundamental for the construction of (bicovariant) differential calculi on braided Hopf alg…
We survey the theory of Hopf monads on monoidal categories, and present new examples and applications. As applications, we utilise this machinery to present a new theory of cross products, as well as analogues of the Fundamental Theorem of Hopf algebras and Radford's biproduct Theorem for Hopf algebroids. Additionally, we describe new examples of Hopf monads which arise from Galois and Ore extensions of bialgebras. We also classify Lawvere theories whose corresponding monads on the category of sets and functions become Hopf, as well as Hopf monads on the poset of natural numbers.
In this paper we prove an analogue of Brauer's theorem for faithful objects in fusion categories. Other notions, such as the order and the index associated to faithful objects of fusion categories are also discussed. We show that the index of a faithful simple object of a fusion categories coincides with the order of the universal grading group of the fusion category.
Let $H$ be a Hopf algebra in braided category $\cal C$. Crossed modules over $H$ are objects with both module and comodule structures satisfying some comatibility condition. Category ${\cal C}^H_H$ of crossed modules is braided and is concrete realization of general categorical construction. For quantum braided group $(H,{\cal R})$ corresponding braided category ${\cal C}^{\cal R}_H$ of modules is identifyed with full subcategory in ${\cal C}_H^H$. Connection with crossproducts is discussed. Correct cross product in the class of quantum braided groups is built. Radford's--Majid's theorem gives…
There are various generalizations of bialgebras to their ''many object'' versions, such as quantum categories, bialgebroids and weak bialgebras. These can also be thought of as quantum analogues of small categories. In this paper we study modules over these structures, which are quantum analogues of profunctors (also called distributors) between small categories.
We define Hopf monads on an arbitrary monoidal category, extending the definition given previously for monoidal categories with duals. A Hopf monad is a bimonad (or opmonoidal monad) whose fusion operators are invertible. This definition can be formulated in terms of Hopf adjunctions, which are comonoidal adjunctions with an invertibility condition. On a monoidal category with internal Homs, a Hopf monad is a bimonad admitting a left and a right antipode. Hopf monads generalize Hopf algebras to the non-braided setting. They also generalize Hopf algebroids (which are linear Hopf monads on a cat…
We study the group of group-like elements of a weak Hopf algebra and derive an analogue of Radford's formula for the fourth power of the antipode S, which implies that the antipode has a finite order modulo a trivial automorphism. We find a sufficient condition in terms of Tr(S^2) for a weak Hopf algebra to be semisimple, discuss relation between semisimplicity and cosemisimplicity, and apply our results to show that a dynamical twisting deformation of a semisimple Hopf algebra is cosemisimple.
We first prove an analogue of Lagrange theorem for global dimensions of fusion categories, then we give a complete classifications of pre-modular fusion categories of integer global dimensions less than or equal to $10$.
We develop the theory of semisimple weak Hopf algebras and obtain analogues of a number of classical results for ordinary semisimple Hopf algebras. We prove a criterion for semisimplicity and analyze the square of the antipode S^2 of a semisimple weak Hopf algebra A. We explain how the Frobenius-Perron dimensions of irreducible A-modules and eigenvalues of S^2 can be computed using the inclusion matrix associated to A. A trace formula of Larson and Radford is extended to a relation between the global and Frobenius-Perron dimensions of A. Finally, an analogue of the Class Equation of Kac and Zh…
Let $A$ be a Hopf algebra in a braided category $\cal C$. Crossed modules over $A$ are introduced and studied as objects with both module and comodule structures satisfying a compatibility condition. The category $\DY{\cal C}^A_A$ of crossed modules is braided and is a concrete realization of a known general construction of a double or center of a monoidal category. For a quantum braided group $(A,\overline A,{\cal R})$ the corresponding braided category of modules ${\cal C}_{\cO{A,\overline A}}$ is identified with a full subcategory in $\DY{\cal C}_A^A$. The connection with cross products is …
Given a monoidal category C, an ordinary category M, and a monad T in M, the lifts in a strict sense of a fixed action of C on M to an action of C on the Eilenberg-Moore category of T-modules in M are in a bijective correspondence with certain families of natural transformations, indexed by the objects in the monoidal category C. These families are analogues of distributive laws between monads.
We introduce the notion of the Drinfeld dual of an algebra and show that Hall algebras defined by Kontsevich-Soibelman in \cite{KS} are the Drinfeld duals of derived Hall algebras defined in \cite{Toen2005} and \cite{XX2006}. Moreover, we construct the motivic analogue of a derived Hall algebra and prove that it is isomorphic to the motivic Hall algebra constructed in \cite{KS}.
We construct an equivalence between the 2-categories VMonCat of rigid V-monoidal categories for a braided monoidal category V and VModTens of oplax braided functors from V into the Drinfeld centers of ordinary rigid monoidal categories. The 1-cells in each are the respective lax monoidal functors, and the 2-cells are the respective monoidal natural transformations. Our proof also gives an equivalence in the case that we consider only strong monoidal 1-cells on both sides. The 2-categories VMonCat and VModTens have G-graded analogues. We also get an equivalence of 2-categories between G-extensi…
The analogy between Yetter's deformation theory form (lax) monoidal functors and Gerstenahaber's deformation theory for associative algebras is solidified by shown that under reasonable conditions the category of functors with an action of a lax monoidal functor is abelian, that an analogue of the Hochschild cohomology of an algebra with coefficients in a bimodule exists for monoidal functors, and is given by right derived functors. The deformation cohmology of a monoidal natural transformation is shown to be a special case.
The main goal of this paper is to investigate the structure of Hopf algebras with the property that either its Jacobson radical is a Hopf ideal or its coradical is a subalgebra. In order to do that we define the Hochschild cohomology of an algebra in an abelian monoidal category. Then we characterize those algebras which have dimension less than or equal to 1 with respect to Hochschild cohomology. Now let us consider a Hopf algebra A such that its Jacobson radical J is a nilpotent Hopf ideal and H:=A/J is a semisimple algebra. By using our homological results, we prove that the canonical proje…
In this note, we describe two analogues of the Verlinde formula for modular categories in a twisted setting. The classical Verlinde formula for a modular category $\mathscr{C}$ describes the fusion coefficients of $\mathscr{C}$ in terms of the corresponding S-matrix $S(\mathscr{C})$. Now let us suppose that we also have an invertible $\mathscr{C}$-module category $\mathscr{M}$ equipped with a $\mathscr{C}$-module trace. This gives rise to a modular autoequivalence $F:\mathscr{C}\xrightarrow{\cong}\mathscr{C}$. In this setting, we can define a crossed S-matrix $S(\mathscr{C},\mathscr{M})$. As o…
We consider Hopf bimodules and crossed modules over a Hopf algebra $H$ in a braided category. They are the key-stones for braided bicovariant differential calculi and their invariant vector fields respectively, as well as for the construction of braided Hopf algebra cross products. We show that the notions of Hopf bimodules and crossed modules are equivalent. A generalization of the Radford-Majid criterion to the braided case is given and it is seen that bialgebra cross products over the Hopf algebra $H$ are precisely described by $H$-crossed module bialgebras. We study the theory of (bicovari…
We show how DG categories arise naturally in noncommutative differential geometry and use them to derive noncommutative analogues of the Bianchi identities for the curvature of a connection. We also give a derivation of formulae for characteristic classes in noncommutative geometry following Chern's original derivation, rather than using cyclic cohomology. We show that a related DG category for extendable bimodule connections is a monoidal tensor category and in the metric compatible case give an analogue of a classical antisymmetry of the Riemann tensor. The monoidal structure implies the exi…
We use category theory to propose a unified approach to the Schur-Weyl dualities involving the general linear Lie algebras, their polynomial extensions and associated quantum deformations. We define multiplicative sequences of algebras exemplified by the sequence of group algebras of the symmetric groups and use them to introduce associated monoidal categories. Universal properties of these categories lead to uniform constructions of the Drinfeld functor connecting representation theories of the degenerate affine Hecke algebras and the Yangians and of its q-analogue. Moreover, we construct act…
We develop a categorical analogue of Clifford theory for strongly graded rings over graded fusion categories. We describe module categories over a fusion category graded by a group $G$ as induced from module categories over fusion subcategories associated with the subgroups of $G$. We define invariant $\C_e$-module categories and extensions of $\C_e$-module categories. The construction of module categories over $\C$ is reduced to determine invariant module categories for subgroups of $G$ and the indecomposable extensions of this modules categories. We associate a $G$-crossed product fusion cat…
Pursuing a generalization of group symmetries of modular categories to category symmetries in topological phases of matter, we study linear Hopf monads. The main goal is a generalization of extension and gauging group symmetries to category symmetries of modular categories, which include also categorical Hopf algebras as special cases. As an application, we propose an analogue of the classification of finite simple groups to modular categories, where we define simple modular categories as the prime ones without any nontrivial normal algebras.
The 2-category V-Cat of categories enriched over a braided monoidal category V is not itself braided in any way that is based upon the braiding of V. The exception is the case in which V is symmetric, which leads to V-Cat being symmetric as well. This paper describes how these facts are related to a categorical analogue of topological delooping. It seems that the analogy of loop spaces is a good guide for how to define the concept of enrichment over various types of monoidal objects, including k-fold monoidal categories and their higher dimensional counterparts. The main result is that for V a…
By a theorem of Majid, every monoidal category with a neutral quasi-monoidal functor to finitely-generated and projective $\Bbbk$-modules gives rise to a coquasi-bialgebra. We prove that if the category is also rigid, then the associated coquasi-bialgebra admits a preantipode, providing in this way an analogue for coquasi-bialgebras of Ulbrich's reconstruction theorem for Hopf algebras. When $\Bbbk$ is field, this allows us to characterize coquasi-Hopf algebras as well in terms of rigidity of finite-dimensional corepresentations.
We introduce a multi-parameter twisted Hopf algebra associated with a root datum and show that its modified form is isomorphic to Lusztig's modified quantum algebra under certain restrictions on the parameters. By taking various specializations of the parameters, we obtain similar results for two/multi-parameter quantum algebras and Kang-Kashiwara-Oh's multi-parameter quantum superalgebras. As a consequence, the categories of weight modules of these algebras are identical.
Classifying all Hopf algebras of a given finite dimension over the complex numbers is a challenging problem which remains open even for many small dimensions, not least because few general approaches to the problem are known. Some useful techniques include counting the dimensions of spaces related to the coradical filtration, studying sub- and quotient Hopf algebras, especially those sub-Hopf algebras generated by a simple subcoalgebra, working with the antipode, and studying Hopf algebras in Yetter-Drinfeld categories to help to classify Radford biproducts. In this paper, we add to the classi…
We study monoidal categories that enjoy a certain weakening of the rigidity property, namely, the existence of a dualizing object in the sense of Grothendieck and Verdier. We call them Grothendieck-Verdier categories. Notable examples include the derived category of constructible sheaves on a scheme (with respect to tensor product) as well as the derived and equivariant derived categories of constructible sheaves on an algebraic group (with respect to convolution). We show that the notions of pivotal category and ribbon category, which are well known in the setting of rigid monoidal categories…
We generalize the Frobenius-Schur theorem to $C^*$-categories. From this category-theoretical point of view, we introduce the notions of real, complex and quaternionic representations of Hopf $C^*$-algebras. Based on these definitions, we give another type of the Hopf-algebraic analogue of the Frobenius-Schur theorem, originally due to Linchenko and Montgomery. Also given are similar results for weak Hopf $C^*$-algebras, table algebras and compact quantum groups.
In the present paper we show that Hall algebras of finitary exact categories behave like quantum groups in the sense that they are generated by indecomposable objects. Moreover, for a large class of such categories, Hall algebras are generated by their primitive elements, with respect to the natural comultiplication, even for non-hereditary categories. Finally, we introduce certain primitively generated subalgebras of Hall algebras and conjecture an analogue of "Lie correspondence" for those finitary categories.
In this expository paper, we discuss and compare the notions of braided and coboundary monoidal categories. Coboundary monoidal categories are analogues of braided monoidal categories in which the role of the braid group is replaced by the cactus group. We focus on the categories of representations of quantum groups and crystals and explain how while the former is a braided monoidal category, this structure does not pass to the crystal limit. However, the categories of representations of quantum groups of finite type also possess the structure of a coboundary category which does behave well in…
