We consider the coincident root loci consisting of the polynomials with at least two double roots andpresent a linear basis of the corresponding ideal in the algebra of symmetric polynomials in terms of the Jack polynomials with special value of parameter $α= -2.$ As a corollary we present an explicit formula for the Hilbert-Poincarè series of this ideal and the generator of the minimal degree as a special Jack polynomial.
A generalization to the case of the symmetric polynomials vanishing on the double shifted diagonals and the Macdonald polynomials specialized at $t^2 q = 1$ is also presented. We also give similar results for the interpolation Jack polynomials.
Formulas of Rodrigues-type for the Macdonald polynomials are presented. They involve creation operators, certain properties of which are proved and other conjectured. The limiting case of the Jack polynomials is discussed.
A generalization of Newton's identity on symmetric functions is given. Using the generalized Newton identity we give a unified method to show the existence of Hall-Littlewood, Jack and Macdonald polynomials. We also give a simple proof of the Jing-Jözefiak formula for two-row Macdonald functions.
We give the explicit analytic development of any Jack or Macdonald polynomial in terms of elementary (resp. modified complete) symmetric functions. These two developments are obtained by inverting the Pieri formula.
We define the analogue of Jack's (Jacobi) polynomials, which were defined for finite-dimensional root system by Heckman and Opdam as eigenfunctions of trigonometric Sutherland operator for the affine root system $\hat A_{n-1}$. In the affine case, we define the polynomials as eigenfunctions of "affine Sutherland operator", which is Calogero-Sutherland operator with elliptic potential plus the term involving derivative with respect to the modular parameter. We show that such polynomials can be constructed explicitly as traces of certain intertwiners for affine Lie algebra. Also, we define the q…
The clustering properties of Jack polynomials are relevant in the theoretical study of the fractional Hall states. In this context, some factorization properties have been conjectured for the $(q,t)$-deformed problem involving Macdonald polynomials. The present paper is devoted to the proof of this formula. To this aim we use four families of Jack/Macdonald polynomials: symmetric homogeneous, nonsymmetric homogeneous, shifted symmetric and shifted nonsymmetric.
We prove a combinatorial formula for the Macdonald polynomial H_mu(x;q,t) which had been conjectured by the first author. Corollaries to our main theorem include the expansion of H_mu(x;q,t) in terms of LLT polynomials, a new proof of the charge formula of Lascoux and Schutzenberger for Hall-Littlewood polynomials, a new proof of Knop and Sahi's combinatorial formula for Jack polynomials as well as a lifting of their formula to integral form Macdonald polynomials, and a new combinatorial rule for the Kostka-Macdonald coefficients K_{lambda,mu}(q,t) in the case that mu is a partition with parts…
A new type of sl_3 basic hypergeometric series based on Macdonald polynomials is introduced. Besides a pair of Macdonald polynomials attached to two different sets of variables, a key-ingredient in the sl_3 basic hypergeometric series is a bisymmetric function related to Macdonald's commuting family of q-difference operators, to the sl_3 Selberg integrals of Tarasov and Varchenko, and to alternating sign matrices. Our main result for sl_3 series is a multivariable generalization of the celebrated q-binomial theorem. In the limit this q-binomial sum yields a new sl_3 Selberg integral for Jack p…
We study certain $q$-difference raising operators for Macdonald polynomials (of type $A_{n-1}$) which are originated from the $q$-difference-reflection operators introduced in our previous paper. These operators can be regarded as a $q$-difference version of the raising operators for Jack polynomials introduced by L.Lapointe and L.Vinet. As an application of our $q$-difference raising operators we give an elementary proof of the integrality of the double Kostka coefficients which had been conjectured I.G. Macdonald. We also determine their quasi-classical limits, which give rise to (differenta…
We extend some results about shifted Schur functions to the general context of shifted Macdonald polynomials. We obtain two explicit formulas for these polynomials: a $q$-integral representation and a combinatorial formula. Our main tool is a $q$-integral representation for ordinary Macdonald polynomials. We also discuss duality for shifted Macdonald polynomials and Jack degeneration of these polynomials.
We consider the gl(N)-invariant Calogero-Sutherland Models with N=1,2,3,... in a unified framework, which is the framework of Symmetric Polynomials. By the framework we mean an isomorphism between the space of states of the gl(N)-invariant Calogero-Sutherland Model and the space of Symmetric Laurent Polynomials. In this framework it becomes apparent that all gl(N)-invariant Calogero-Sutherland Models are manifestations of the same entity, which is the commuting family of Macdonald Operators. Macdonald Operators depend on two parameters $q$ and $t$. The Hamiltonian of gl(N)-invariant Calogero-S…
We introduce certain raising and lowering operators for Macdonald polynomials (of type $A_{n-1}$) by means of Dunkl operators. The raising operators we discuss are a natural $q$-analogue of raising operators for Jack polynomials introduced by L.Lapointe and L.Vinet. As an application we prove the integrality of double Kostka coefficients. Double analog of the multinomial coefficients are introduced.
The Macdonald polynomials with prescribed symmetry are obtained from the nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials via the operations of $t$-symmetrisation, $t$-antisymmetrisation and normalisation. Motivated by corresponding results in Jack polynomial theory we proceed to derive an expansion formula and a related normalisation. Eigenoperator methods are used to relate the symmetric and antisymmetric Macdonald polynomials, and we discuss how these methods can be extended to special classes of the prescribed symmetry polynomials in terms of their symmetric counterpart. We compute the explicit form of …
Inhomogeneous analogues of symmetric and nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials were introduced by F. Knop and the author. In the symmetric case A. Okounkov has recently proved a beautiful expansion formula which can be viewed as a multivariable generalization of the q-binomial theorem. It is becoming clear that many interesting results in the symmetric setting can also be established in the nonsymmetric setting. In this paper, we prove the nonsymmetric analogue the binomial formula, and also discuss the limiting case of Jack polynomials.
We study Macdonald polynomials from a basic hypergeometric series point of view. In particular, we show that the Pieri formula for Macdonald polynomials and its recently discovered inverse, a recursion formula for Macdonald polynomials, both represent multivariable extensions of the terminating very-well-poised 6-phi-5 summation formula. We derive several new related identities including multivariate extensions of Jackson's very-well-poised 8-phi-7 summation. Motivated by our basic hypergeometric analysis, we propose an extension of Macdonald polynomials to Macdonald symmetric functions indexe…
The branching rule is one of the most fundamental properties of the Macdonald symmetric polynomials. It expresses a Macdonald polynomial as a nonnegative linear combination of Macdonald polynomials with smaller number of variables. Taking a limit of the branching rule under the principal specialization when the number of variables goes to infinity, we obtain a Markov chain of $m$ noncolliding particles with negative drift and an absorbing wall at zero. The chain depends on the Macdonald parameters $(q,t)$ and may be viewed as a discrete deformation of the Dyson Brownian motion. The trajectory …
Heckman introduced $N$ operators on the space of polynomials in $N$ variables, such that these operators form a covariant set relative to permutations of the operators and variables, and such that Jack symmetric polynomials are eigenfunctions of the power sums of these operators. We introduce the analogues of these $N$ operators for Macdonald symmetric polynomials, by using Cherednik operators. The latter operators pairwise commute, and Macdonald polynomials are eigenfunctions of their power sums. We compute the limits of our operators at $N\to\infty$. These limits yield the same Lax operator …
For each pair (k,r) of positive integers with r>1, we consider an ideal I^(k,r)_n of the ring of symmetric polynomials in n variables. The ideal I_n^(k,r) has a basis consisting of Macdonald polynomials P(x_1,...,x_n;q,t) at t^{k+1}q^{r-1}=1, and is a deformed version of the one studied earlier in the context of Jack polynomials. In this paper we give a characterization of I^(k,r)_n in terms of explicit zero conditions on the k-codimensional shifted diagonals of the form x_{2}=tq^{s_1}x_1,...,x_{k+1}=tq^{s_k}x_k. The ideal I^(k,r)_n may be viewed as a deformation of the space of correlation fu…
The Jack polynomials with prescribed symmetry are obtained from the nonsymmetric polynomials via the operations of symmetrization, antisymmetrization and normalization. After dividing out the corresponding antisymmetric polynomial of smallest degree, a symmetric polynomial results. Of interest in applications is the value of the latter polynomial when all the variables are set equal. Dunkl has obtained this evaluation, making use of a certain skew symmetric operator. We introduce a simpler operator for this purpose, thereby obtaining a new derivation of the evaluation formula. An expansion for…
We construct a family of BC_n-symmetric biorthogonal abelian functions generalizing Koornwinder's orthogonal polynomials, and prove a number of their properties, most notably analogues of Macdonald's conjectures. The construction is based on a direct construction for a special case generalizing Okounkov's interpolation polynomials. We show that these interpolation functions satisfy a collection of generalized hypergeometric identities, including new multivariate elliptic analogues of Jackson's summation and Bailey's transformation.
Let Sym denote the algebra of symmetric functions and $P_μ(\,\cdot\,;q,t)$ and $Q_μ(\,\cdot\,;q,t)$ be the Macdonald symmetric functions (recall that they differ by scalar factors only). The $(q,t)$-Cauchy identity $$ \sum_μP_μ(x_1,x_2,\dots;q,t)Q_μ(y_1,y_2,\dots;q,t)=\prod_{i,j=1}^\infty\frac{(x_iy_jt;q)_\infty}{(x_iy_j;q)_\infty} $$ expresses the fact that the $P_μ(\,\cdot\,;q,t)$'s form an orthogonal basis in Sym with respect to a special scalar product $\langle\,\cdot\,,\,\cdot\,\rangle_{q,t}$. The present paper deals with the inhomogeneous \emph{interpolation} Macdonald symmetric function…
We prove orthogonality and compute explicitly the (quadratic) norms for super-Jack polynomials $SP_λ((z_1,\ldots,z_n),(w_1,\ldots,w_m);θ)$ with respect to a natural positive semi-definite, but degenerate, Hermitian product $\langle\cdot,\cdot\rangle_{n,m}^\prime$. In case $m=0$ (or $n=0$), our product reduces to Macdonald's well-known inner product $\langle\cdot,\cdot\rangle_n^\prime$, and we recover his corresponding orthogonality results for the Jack polynomials $P_λ((z_1,\ldots,z_n);θ)$. From our main results, we readily infer that the kernel of $\langle\cdot,\cdot\rangle_{n,m}^\prime$ is s…
We introduce the (global) q-Whittaker function as the limit at t=0 of the q,t-spherical function extending the symmetric Macdonald polynomials to arbitrary eigenvalues. The construction heavily depends on the technique of the q-Gaussians developed by the author (and Stokman in the non-reduced case). In this approach, the q-Whittaker function is given by a series convergent everywhere, a kind of generating function for multi-dimensional q-Hermite polynomials (closely related to the level 1 Demazure characters). One of the applications is a q-version of the Shintani- Casselman- Shalika formula, …
