Let f be a smooth Morse function on an infinite dimensional separable Hilbert manifold, all of whose critical points have infinite Morse index and co-index. For any critical point x choose an integer a(x) arbitrarily. Then there exists a Riemannian structure on M such that the corresponding gradient flow of f has the following property: for any pair of critical points x,y, the unstable manifold of x and the stable manifold of y have a transverse intersection of dimension a(x)-a(y).
In this paper, we prove Morse index theorem of Lagrangian system with any self-adjoint boundary conditions. Based on it, we give some nontrivial estimation on the difference of Morse indices. As an application, we get a new criterion for the stability problem of brake periodic orbit.
In this paper, we give the definition of Maslov-type index of the discrete Hamiltonian system, and obtain the relation of Morse index and Maslov-type index of the discrete Hamiltonian system which is a generalization of case $ω=1$ in \cite{RoS1}, \cite{RoS2} and \cite{Maz1} to case $ω\in {\bf U}$ via direct method which is different from that of \cite{RoS1}, \cite{RoS2} and \cite{Maz1}. Moreover well-posedness of the splitting numbers $S_ω$ of the discrete Hamiltonian system is proven, thus index iteration theories in \cite{Bot1} and \cite{Lon4} are also valid for the discrete Hamiltonian syst…
This is an expository paper devoted to the Morse index of Chaperon's generating families of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms. After reviewing the construction of such generating families, we present Bott's iteration theory in this setting: we study how the Morse index of a critical point corresponding to an iterated periodic orbit depends on the order of iteration of the orbit. We also investigate the precise dependence of the Morse index from the choice of the generating family associated to a given Hamiltonian diffeomorphism, which will allow to see the Morse index as a Maslov index for the linea…
We prove that every combinatorial dynamical system in the sense of Forman, defined on a family of simplices of a simplicial complex, gives rise to a multivalued dynamical system F on the geometric realization of the simplicial complex. Moreover, F may be chosen in such a way that the isolated invariant sets, Conley indices, Morse decompositions, and Conley-Morse graphs of the two dynamical systems are in one-to-one correspondence.
We generalise the semi-Riemannian Morse index theorem to elliptic systems of partial differential equations on star-shaped domains. Moreover, we apply our theorem to bifurcation from a branch of trivial solutions of semilinear systems, where the bifurcation parameter is introduced by shrinking the domain to a point. This extends recent results of the authors for scalar equations.
A recent generalization of the Conley index to discrete multivalued dynamical systems without a continuous selector is motivated by applications to data-driven dynamics. In the present paper we continue the program by studying attractor-repeller pairs and Morse decompositions in this setting. In particular, we prove Morse equation and Morse inequalities.
We study a singular Hamiltonian system with an $\al$-homogeneous potential that contains, as a particular case, the classical $N$--body problem. We introduce a variational Morse--like index for a class of collision solutions and, using the asymptotic estimates near collisions, we prove the non-minimality of some special classes of colliding trajectories under suitable spectral conditions provided $\al$ is sufficiently away from zero. We then prove some minimality results for small values of the parameter $\al$.
In this paper we introduce a new compactness condition - Property (C) - for flows in (not necessary locally compact) metric spaces. For such flows a Conley type theory can be developed. For example (regular) index pairs always exist for Property-(C) flows and a Conley index can be defined. An important class of flows satisfying this compactness condition are LS-flows. We apply E-cohomology to index pairs of LS-flows and obtain the E-cohomological Conley index. We formulate a continuation principle for the E-cohomological Conley index and show that all LS-flows can be continued to LS-gradient f…
We employ the relative category to develop relations between the Ważewski pair $(N,E)$ and the Morse decomposition of the maximal invariant set in $\ol{N\sm E}$ for infinite-dimensional dynamical systems. Via these relations, we can detect connecting trajectories between Morse sets and obtain a dynamical-system version of critical point theorem with relative category.
Due to collision singularities, the Lagrange action functional of the N-body problem in general is not differentiable. Because of this, the usual critical point theory can not be applied to this problem directly. Following ideas from \cite{BR91}, \cite{Tn93a} and \cite{ABT06}, we introduce a notion called weak critical point for such an action functional, as a generalization of the usual critical point. A corresponding definition of Morse index for such a weak critical point will also be given. Moreover it will be shown that the Morse index gives an upper bound of the number of possible binary…
Assuming a symmetric potential that approaches constant endstates with a sufficient asymptotic rate, we relate the Maslov and Morse indices for Schrödinger operators on $\mathbb{R}$. In particular, we show that with our choice of convention, the Morse index is precisely the negative of the Maslov index.
The paper is devoted to finding conditions to the existence of a self-indexing energy function for Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms on a 3-manifold. These conditions involve how the stable and unstable manifolds of saddle points are embedded in the ambient manifold. We also show that the existence of a self-indexing energy function is equivalent to the existence of a Heegaard splitting of a special type with respect to the considered diffeomorphism.
It is well known that the linear stability of the Lagrangian elliptic solutions in the classical planar three-body problem depends on a mass parameter $β$ and on the eccentricity $e$ of the orbit. We consider only the circular case ($e = 0$) but under the action of a broader family of singular potentials: $α$-homogeneous potentials, for $α\in (0,2)$, and the logarithmic one. It turns out indeed that the Lagrangian circular orbit persists also in this more general setting. We discover a region of linear stability expressed in terms of the homogeneity parameter $α$ and the mass parameter $β$, th…
We compute the fixed point index of non-degenerate central configurations for the $n$-body problem in the euclidean space of dimension $d$, relating it to the Morse index of the gravitational potential function $\bar U$ induced on the manifold of all maximal $O(d)$-orbits. In order to do so, we analyze the geometry of maximal orbit type manifolds, and compute Morse indices with respect to the mass-metric bilinear form on configuration spaces.
Let $M$ be either $n$-sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n}$ or a connected sum of finitely many copies of $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}\times \mathbb{S}^{1}$, $n\geq4$. A flow $f^t$ on $M$ is called gradient-like whenever its non-wandering set consists of finitely many hyperbolic equilibria and their invariant manifolds intersects transversally. We prove that if invariant manifolds of distinct saddles of a gradient-like flow $f^t$ on $M$ do not intersect each other (in other words, $f^t$ has no heteroclinic intersections), then for each saddle of $f^t$ its Morse index (i.e. dimension of the unstable manifold) is either…
The ground state of the energy super-critical Gross--Pitaevskii equation with a harmonic potential converges in the energy space to the singular solution in the limit of large amplitudes. The ground state can be represented by a solution curve which has either oscillatory or monotone behavior, depending on the dimension of the system and the power of the focusing nonlinearity. We address here the monotone case for the cubic nonlinearity in the spatial dimensions $d \geq 13$. By using the shooting method for the radial Schrödinger operators, we prove that the Morse index of the ground state is …
Multivector fields provide an avenue for studying continuous dynamical systems in a combinatorial framework. There are currently two approaches in the literature which use persistent homology to capture changes in combinatorial dynamical systems. The first captures changes in the Conley index, while the second captures changes in the Morse decomposition. However, such approaches have limitations. The former approach only describes how the Conley index changes across a selected isolated invariant set though the dynamics can be much more complicated than the behavior of a single isolated invaria…
In this paper and in the forthcoming Part II we introduce a Morse complex for a class of functions f defined on an infinite dimensional Hilbert manifold M, possibly having critical points of infinite Morse index and coindex. The idea is to consider an infinite dimensional subbundle - or more generally an essential subbundle - of the tangent bundle of M, suitably related with the gradient flow of f. This Part I deals with the following questions about the intersection W of the unstable manifold of a critical point x and the stable manifold of another critical point y: finite dimensionality of W…
A simple version of exact finite dimensional reduction for the variational setting of mechanical systems is presented. It is worked out by means of a thorough global version of the implicit function theorem for monotone operators. Moreover, the Hessian of the reduced function preserves all the relevant information of the original one, by Schur's complement, which spontaneously appears in this context. Finally, the results are straightforwardly extended to the case of a Dirichlet problem on a bounded domain.
