We show that every countable direct system of finite-dimensional real or complex Lie groups has a direct limit in the category of Lie groups modelled on locally convex spaces. This enables us to push all basic constructions of finite-dimensional Lie theory to the case of direct limit groups. In particular, we obtain an analogue of Lie's third theorem: Every countable-dimensional real or complex locally finite Lie algebra is enlargible, i.e., it is the Lie algebra of some regular Lie group (a suitable direct limit group).
Weil prolongations of a Lie group are naturally Lie groups. It is not known in the theory of infinite-dimensional Lie groups how to construct a Lie group with a given Lie algebra as its Lie algebra or whether there exists such a Lie group at all. We will show in this paper how to construct some Weil prolongations of this mythical Lie group from a given Lie algebra. We will do so within our favorite framework of synthetic differential geometry.
In a preprint from 1982, John Milnor formulated various fundamental questions concerning infinite-dimensional Lie groups. In this note, we describe some of the answers (and partial answers) obtained in the preceding years.
To each totally disconnected, locally compact topological group G and each group A of automorphisms of G, a pseudo-metric space of ``directions'' has been associated by U. Baumgartner and the second author. Given a Lie group G over a local field, it is a natural idea to try to define a map from the space of directions of analytic automorphisms of G to the space of directions of automorphisms of the Lie algebra L(G) of G, which takes the direction of an analytic automorphism of G to the direction of the associated Lie algebra automorphism. We show that, in general, this map is not well-defined.…
Let G be a regular Lie group which is a directed union of regular Lie groups G_i (all modelled on possibly infinite-dimensional, locally convex spaces). We show that G is the direct limit of the G_i as a regular Lie group whenever G admits a so-called direct limit chart. Notably, this allows the regular Lie group Diff_c(M) of compactly supported smooth diffeomorphisms to be interpreted as a direct limit of the regular Lie groups Diff_K(M) of smooth diffeomorphisms supported in compact subsets K of M, even if the finite-dimensional smooth manifold M is merely paracompact (but not necessarily si…
The Chen groups of a finitely-presented group G are the lower central series quotients of its maximal metabelian quotient, G/G''. The direct sum of the Chen groups is a graded Lie algebra, with bracket induced by the group commutator. If G is the fundamental group of a formal space, we give an analog of a basic result of D. Sullivan, by showing that the rational Chen Lie algebra of G is isomorphic to the rational holonomy Lie algebra of G modulo the second derived subalgebra. Following an idea of W.S. Massey, we point out a connection between the Alexander invariant of a group G defined by com…
Thin Lie algebras are infinite-dimensional graded Lie algebras $L=\bigoplus_{i=1}^{\infty}$, with $\dim(L_1)=2$ and satisfying a covering property: for each $i$, each nonzero $z\in L_i$ satisfies $[zL_1]=L_{i+1}$. It follows that each homogeneous components $L_i$ is either one- or two-dimensional, and in the latter case is called a diamond. Hence $L_1$ is a diamond, and if there are no other diamonds then $L$ is a graded Lie algebra of maximal class. We present simpler proofs of some fundamental facts on graded Lie algebras of maximal class, and on thin Lie algebras, based on a uniform method,…
We show that a Lie algebra having a nilpotent radical has a fundamental set of invariants consisting of Casimir operators. We give a different proof of this fact in the special and well-known case where the radical is abelian.
Let G be a Lie group which is the union of an ascending sequence of Lie groups G_n (all of which may be infinite-dimensional). We study the question when G is the direct limit of the G_n's in the category of Lie groups, topological groups, smooth manifolds, resp., topological spaces. Full answers are obtained for G the group Diff_c(M) of compactly supported smooth diffeomorphisms of a sigma-compact smooth manifold M, and for test function groups C^infty_c(M,H) of compactly supported smooth maps with values in a finite-dimensional Lie group H. We also discuss the cases where G is a direct limit…
Many infinite-dimensional Lie groups of interest can be expressed as a union of an ascending sequence of (finite- or infinite-dimensional) Lie groups. In this survey article, we compile general results concerning such ascending unions, describe the main classes of examples, and explain what the general theory tells us about these. In particular, we discuss: (1) Direct limit properties of ascending unions of Lie groups in the relevant categories; (2) Regularity in Milnor's sense; (3) Homotopy groups of direct limit groups and of Lie groups containing a dense union of Lie groups; (4) Subgroups o…
Let G be a compact Lie group, and consider the variety Hom(Z^k,G) of representations of Z^k into G. We view this as a based space by designating the trivial representation to be its base point. We prove that the fundamental group of this space is naturally isomorphic to π_1(G)^k.
Let $M$ be a compact smooth manifold of dimension $m$ (without boundary) and $G$ be a finite-dimensional Lie group, with Lie algebra $g$. Let $H^{>m/2}(M,G)$ be the group of all mappings $γ\colon M\to G$ which are $H^s$ for some $s>m/2$. We show that $H^{>m/2}(M,G)$ can be made a regular Lie group in Milnor's sense, modelled on the Silva space $H^{>m/2}(M,g)$ which is the locally convex direct limit of the Hilbert spaces $H^s(M,g)$ for $s>m/2$, such that $H^{>m/2}(M,G)$ is the direct limit of the Hilbert-Lie groups $H^s(M,G)$ for $s>m/2$ as a smooth Lie group. We also explain how the (known) L…
For any hyperbolic genus one 2-bridge knot in the 3-sphere, we show that the resulting manifold by $r$-surgery on the knot has left-orderable fundamental group if the slope $r$ lies in some range which depends on the knot.
