We describe the linear and nonlinear stability and instability of certain symmetric configurations of point vortices on the sphere forming relative equilibria. These configurations consist of one or two rings, and a ring with one or two polar vortices. Such configurations have dihedral symmetry, and the symmetry is used to block diagonalize the relevant matrices, to distinguish the subspaces on which their eigenvalues need to be calculated, and also to describe the bifurcations that occur as eigenvalues pass through zero.
Given a regular polygonal arrangement of identical objects, turning around a central object (masses, vortices or dNLS oscillators), this paper studies the global bifurcation of relative equilibria in function of a natural parameter (central mass, central circulation or amplitude of the oscillation). The symmetries of the problem are used in order to find the irreducible representations, the linearization and, with the help of a degree theory, the symmetries of the bifurcated solutions.
We investigate some properties of the dynamical system of point vortices on the hyperboloid. This system has noncompact symmetry SL(2, R) and a coadjoint equivariant momentum map J. The relative equilibrium conditions are found and the trajectories of relative equilibria with non-zero momentum value are described. We also provide the classification of relative equilibria and the stability criteria for a number of cases, focusing on N=2, 3. Contrary to the system on the sphere, relative equilibria with non-compact momentum isotropy subgroup are found, and are used to illustrate the different st…
Stable assemblages of localized vortices exist which have particle-like properties, such as mass, and which can interact with one another when they closely approach. In this article I calculate the mass of these localized states and numerically investigate some aspects of their interactions.
We study the dynamics of $N$ point vortices on a rotating sphere. The Hamiltonian system becomes infinite dimensional due to the non-uniform background vorticity coming from the Coriolis force. We prove that a relative equilibrium formed of latitudinal rings of identical vortices for the non-rotating sphere persists to be a relative equilibrium when the sphere rotates. We study the nonlinear stability of a polygon of planar point vortices on a rotating plane in order to approximate the corresponding relative equilibrium on the rotating sphere when the ring is close to the pole. We then perform…
Helmholtz's equations provide the motion of a system of N vortices which describes a planar incompressible fluid with zero viscosity. A relative equilibrium is a particular solution of these equations for which the distances between the vortices are invariant during the motion. In this article, we are interested in relative equilibria formed of concentric regular polygons of vortices. We show that in the case of one regular polygon (and a possible vortex at the center) with more than three vertices (two if there is a vortex at the center), a relative equilibrium requires equal vorticities (on …
We prove that for some potentials (including the Newtonian one, and the potential of Helmholtz vortices in the plane) relative equilibria consisting of two homothetic regular polygons of arbitrary size can only occur if the masses at each polygon are equal. The same result is true for many regular polygons as long as the ratio between the radii of the polygons are sufficient large. Moreover, under these hypotheses, the relative equilibrium always exist.
We examine existence and stability of relative equilibria of the $n$-vortex problem specialized to the case where $N$ vortices have small and equal circulation and one vortex has large circulation. As the small circulation tends to zero, the weak vortices tend to a circle centered on the strong vortex. A special potential function of this limiting problem can be used to characterize orbits and stability. Whenever a critical point of this function is nondegenerate, we prove that the orbit can be continued, and its linear stability is determined by properties of the potential. For $N\geq 3$ ther…
We analyze existence, stability, and symmetry of point vortex relative equilibria with one dominant vortex and N vortices with infinitesimal circulation. The dimension of the problem can be reduced by taking an infinitesimal circulation limit, resulting in the so-called (1+N)-vortex problem. In this work, we first generalize the reduction to allow for circulations of varying signs and weights. We then prove that symmetric configurations require equality of two circulation parameters in the (1+3)-vortex problem and show that there are stable asymmetric relative equilibria. In a number of exampl…
This is the second of two companion papers dedicated to the investigation of vortex motion on non-orientable surfaces. The first paper of the pair is predominantly concerned with establishing the Hamiltonian approach to systems of point vortices on non-orientable manifolds and investigating the limits of the intrinsic (restricted to the non-orientable manifold) approach. In addition, point vortex motion on the Mobius band is closely examined. In this paper, we investigate dynamics of one and two point vortices on the Klein bottle through establishing explicit forms of the Hamiltonian, equation…
This paper gives an analysis of the movement of n vortices on the sphere. When the vortices have equal circulation, there is a polygonal solution that rotates uniformly around its center. The main result concerns the global existence of relative periodic solutions that emerge from this polygonal relative equilibrium. In addition, it is proved that the families of relative periodic solutions contain dense sets of choreographies.
We study systems formed of 2N point vortices on a sphere with N vortices of strength +1 and N vortices of strength -1. In this case, the Hamiltonian is conserved by the symmetry which exchanges the positive vortices with the negative vortices. We prove the existence of some fixed and relative equilibria, and then study their stability with the ``Energy Momentum Method''. Most of the results obtained are nonlinear stability results. To end, some bifurcations are described.
Point vortices on a cylinder (periodic strip) are studied geometrically. The Hamiltonian formalism is developed, a non-existence theorem for relative equilibria is proved, equilibria are classified when all vorticities have the same sign, and several results on relative periodic orbits are established, including as corollaries classical results on vortex streets and leapfrogging.
This paper concerns the investigation of the stability properties of relative equilibria which are rigidly rotating vortex configurations sometimes called vortex crystals, in the N-vortex problem. Such a configurations can be characterized as critical point of the Hamiltonian function restricted on the constant angular impulse hypersurface in the phase space (topologically a pseudo-sphere whose coefficients are the circulation strengths of the vortices). Relative equilibria are generated by the circle action on the so-called shape pseudo-sphere (which generalize the standard shape sphere appea…
We consider the $N$-vortex problem on the sphere assuming that all vortices have equal strength. We develop a theoretical framework to analyse solutions of the equations of motion with prescribed symmetries. Our construction relies on the discrete reduction of the system by twisted subgroups of the full symmetry group that rotates and permutes the vortices. Our approach formalises and extends ideas outlined previously by Tokieda (C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris I 333 (2001)) and Soulière and Tokieda (J. Fluid Mech. 460 (2002)) and allows us to prove the existence of several 1-parameter families of per…
This article is concerned with the study of existence and properties of stationary solutions for the dynamics of $N$ point vortices in an idealised fluid constrained to a bounded two--dimen\-sional domain $Ω$, which is governed by a Hamiltonian system \[ \left\{\begin{aligned} Γ_i\frac{d x_i}{d t} &=\frac{\partial H_Ω}{\partial y_i}(z_1,\dots,z_N)\\ Γ_i\frac{d y_i}{d t} &=-\frac{\partial H_Ω}{\partial x_i}(z_1,\dots,z_N) \end{aligned} \hspace{2cm}\text{where}\ z_i=(x_i,y_i),\ i=1,\dots,N, \right. \] where $H_Ω(z):=\sum_{j=1}^NΓ_j^2h(z_j)+\sum_{i,j=1, i\not=j}^NΓ_iΓ_jG(z_i,z_j)$ is the so--call…
We establish that algorithmic experiments in zero-sum games "fail miserably" to confirm the unique, sharp prediction of maxmin equilibration. Contradicting nearly a century of economic thought that treats zero-sum games nearly axiomatically as the exemplar symbol of economic stability, we prove that no meaningful prediction can be made about the day-to-day behavior of online learning dynamics in zero-sum games. Concretely, Multiplicative Weights Updates (MWU) with constant step-size is Lyapunov chaotic in the dual (payoff) space. Simply put, let's assume that an observer asks the agents playin…
In this paper we derive the equations of motion for two-layer point vortex motion on the upper half plane. We study the invariants using symmetry, including the Hamiltonian and show that the two vortex problem is integrable. We characterize all two vortex motions for the cases where the vortex strengths are both equal, $Γ_{1}=Γ_{2}=1$ and when they are opposite $Γ_{1}=-Γ_{2}=1$. We also prove that there are no equilibria for the two vortex problem when $Γ_{1}=-Γ_{2}=1$.\ We show that there is only one relative equilibrium configuration when $Γ_{1}=Γ_{2}=1$ and the vortices are in different lay…
We consider the 3-body problem in 3-dimensional spaces of nonzero constant Gaussian curvature and study the relationship between the masses of the Lagrangian relative equilibria, which are orbits that form a rigidly rotating equilateral triangle at all times. There are three classes of Lagrangian relative equilibria in 3-dimensional spaces of constant nonzero curvature: positive elliptic and positive elliptic-elliptic, on 3-spheres, and negative elliptic, on hyperbolic 3-spheres. We prove that all these Lagrangian relative equilibria exist only for equal values of the masses.
We prove that for every proper Hamiltonian action of a Lie group G in finite dimensions the momentum map is locally G-open relative to its image (i.e. images of G-invariant open sets are open). As an application we deduce that in a Hamiltonian system with continuous Hamiltonian symmetries, extremal relative equilibria persist for every perturbation of the value of the momentum map, provided the isotropy subgroup of this value is compact. We also demonstrate how this persistence result applies to an example of ellipsoidal figures of rotating fluid, and provide an example with plane point vortic…
We consider the dissipative heat flow and conservative Gross-Pitaevskii dynamics associated with the Ginzburg-Landau energy posed on a Riemannian 2-manifold M. We show the limiting vortices of the solutions to these two problems evolve according to the gradient flow and Hamiltonian point-vortex flow respectively, associated with the renormalized energy on M. For the heat flow, we then specialize to the case where M is a sphere and study the limiting system of ODE's and establish an annihilation result. Finally, for the Ginzburg-Landau heat flow on a sphere, we derive some weighted energy ident…
In this paper the non-canonical Hamiltonian dynamics of a gyrostat in the three body problem will be examined. By means of geometric-mechanics methods some relative equilibria of the dynamics of a gyrostat in Newtonian interaction with two rigid bodies will be studied. Taking advantage of the results obtained in previous papers, working on the reduced problem, the bifurcations of these relative equilibria will be studied. The instability of Eulerian relative equilibria if the gyrostat is close to a sphere is proven. Necessary and sufficient conditions will be provided for lineal stability of L…
We consider a one-parameter family $(f_λ)_{λ\, \geqslant \, 0}$ of symmetric vector fields on the three-dimensional sphere $\mathbb{S}^3\subset\mathbb{R}^4$ whose flows exhibit a heteroclinic network between two saddle-foci inside a global attracting set. More precisely, when $λ= 0$, there is an attracting heteroclinic cycle between the two equilibria which is made of two $1$-dimensional connections together with a $2$-dimensional sphere which is both the stable manifold of one saddle-focus and the unstable manifold of the other. After slightly increasing the parameter while keeping the $1$-di…
We study collinear relative equilibria of the planar four-vortex problem where three of the four vortex strengths are identical. The $S_3$ invariance obtained from the equality of vorticities is used to reduce the defining equations and organize the solutions into two distinct groups based on the ordering of the vortices along the line. The number and type of solutions are given, along with a discussion of the bifurcations that occur. The linear stability of all solutions is investigated rigorously and stable solutions are found to exist for cases where the vorticities have mixed signs. We emp…
The system of four point vortices in the plane has relative equilibria that behave as composite particles, in the case where three of the vortices have strength $-Γ/3$ and one of the vortices has strength $Γ$. These relative equilibria occur at nongeneric momenta. The reduction of this system, at those momenta, by continuous and then discrete symmetries, classifies the 4-vortex states which have been observed as products of collisions of two such composite particles. In this article I explicitly calculate these reductions, and show they are qualitatively identical one degree of freedom systems…
We introduce a simple variational principle for coherent material vortices in two-dimensional turbulence. Vortex boundaries are sought as closed stationary curves of the averaged Lagrangian strain. Solutions to this problem turn out to be mathematically equivalent to photon spheres around black holes in cosmology. The fluidic photon spheres satisfy explicit differential equations whose outermost limit cycles are optimal Lagrangian vortex boundaries. As an application, we uncover super-coherent material eddies in the South Atlantic, which yield specific Lagrangian transport estimates for Agulha…
We calculate the mean total number of equilibrium points in a system of $N$ random autonomous ODE's introduced by Cugliandolo et al. in 1997 to describe non-relaxational glassy dynamics on the high-dimensional sphere. In doing it we suggest a new approach which allows such a calculation to be done most straightforwardly, and is based on efficiently incorporating the Langrange multiplier into the Kac-Rice framework. Analysing the asymptotic behaviour for large $N$ we confirm that the phenomenon of 'topology trivialization' revealed earlier for other systems holds also in the present framework w…
When a real saddle equilibrium in a three-dimensional vector field undergoes a homoclinic bifurcation, the associated two-dimensional invariant manifold of the equilibrium closes on itself in an orientable or non-orientable way. We are interested in the interaction between global invariant manifolds of saddle equilibria and saddle periodic orbits for a vector field close to a codimension-two homoclinic flip bifurcation, that is, the point of transition between having an orientable or non-orientable two-dimensional surface. Here, we focus on homoclinic flip bifurcations of case $\textbf{B}$, wh…
We consider the 3-dimensional gravitational $n$-body problem, $n\ge 2$, in spaces of constant Gaussian curvature $κ\ne 0$, i.e.\ on spheres ${\mathbb S}_κ^3$, for $κ>0$, and on hyperbolic manifolds ${\mathbb H}_κ^3$, for $κ<0$. Our goal is to define and study relative equilibria, which are orbits whose mutual distances remain constant in time. We also briefly discuss the issue of singularities in order to avoid impossible configurations. We derive the equations of motion and define six classes of relative equilibria, which follow naturally from the geometric properties of ${\mathbb S}_κ^3$ and…
We give a method to determine relative periodic orbits in point vortex systems: it consists mainly into perform a symplectic reduction on a fixed point submanifold in order to obtain a two-dimensional reduced phase space. The method is applied to point vortices systems on a sphere and on the plane, but works for other surfaces with isotropy (cylinder, ellipsoid, ...). The method permits also to determine some relative equilibria and heteroclinic cycles connecting these relative equilibria.
An interesting situation occurs when the linearized dynamics of the shape of a formally stable Hamiltonian relative equilibrium at nongeneric momentum 1:1 resonates with a frequency of the relative equilibrium's generator. In this case some of the shape variables couple to the group variables to first order in the momentum perturbation, and the first order perturbation theory implies that the relative equilibrium slowly changes orientation in the same way that a charged particle with magnetic moment moves on a sphere under the influence of a radial magnetic monopole. In the course of showing t…
We consider the two-body problem on surfaces of constant non-zero curvature and classify the relative equilibria and their stability. On the hyperbolic plane, for each q>0 we show there are two relative equilibria where the masses are separated by a distance q. One of these is geometrically of elliptic type and the other of hyperbolic type. The hyperbolic ones are always unstable, while the elliptic ones are stable when sufficiently close, but unstable when far apart. On the sphere of positive curvature, if the masses are different, there is a unique relative equilibrium (RE) for every angular…
We investigate the dynamics of $N$ point vortices in the plane, in the limit of large $N$. We consider {\em relative equilibria}, which are rigidly rotating lattice-like configurations of vortices. These configurations were observed in several recent experiments [Durkin and Fajans, Phys. Fluids (2000) 12, 289-293; Grzybowski {\em et.al} PRE (2001)64, 011603]. We show that these solutions and their stability are fully characterized via a related {\em aggregation model} which was recently investigated in the context of biological swarms [Fetecau {\em et.al.}, Nonlinearity (2011) 2681; Bertozzi {…
We consider the motion of point masses given by a natural extension of Newtonian gravitation to spaces of constant positive curvature. Our goal is to explore the spectral stability of tetrahedral orbits of the corresponding 4-body problem in the 2-dimensional case, a situation that can be reduced to studying the motion of the bodies on the unit sphere. We first perform some extensive and highly precise numerical experiments to find the likely regions of stability and instability, relative to the values of the masses and to the latitude of the position of three equal masses. Then we support the…
We consider the motion of n point particles of positive masses that interact gravitationally on the 2-dimensional hyperbolic sphere, which has negative constant Gaussian curvature. Using the stereographic projection, we derive the equations of motion of this curved n-body problem in the Poincaré disk, where we study the elliptic relative equilibria. Then we obtain the equations of motion in the Poincaré upper half plane in order to analyze the hyperbolic and parabolic relative equilibria. Using techniques of Riemannian geometry, we characterize each of the above classes of periodic orbits. For…
This is the second of two companion papers. We describe a generalization of the point vortex system on surfaces to a Hamiltonian dynamical system consisting of two or three points on complex projective space CP^2 interacting via a Hamiltonian function depending only on the distance between the points. The system has symmetry group SU(3). The first paper describes all possible momentum values for such systems, and here we apply methods of symplectic reduction and geometric mechanics to analyze the possible relative equilibria of such interacting generalized vortices. The different types of poly…
