Let I be the defining ideal of a smooth irreducible complete intersection space curve C with defining equations of degrees a and b. We use the partial elimination ideals introduced by Mark Green to show that the lexicographic generic initial ideal of I has Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity 1+ab(a-1)(b-1)/2 with the exception of the case a=b=2, where the regularity is 4. Note that ab(a-1)(b-1)/2 is exactly the number of singular points of a general projection of C to the plane. Additionally, we show that for any term ordering tau, the generic initial ideal of a generic set of points in P^r is a tau-segment ideal.
In this note we describe the minimal resolution of the ideal $I_f$, the saturation of the Jacobian ideal of a nearly free plane curve $C:f=0$. In particular, it follows that this ideal $I_f$ can be generated by at most 4 polynomials. Related general results by Hassanzadeh and Simis on the saturation of codimension 2 ideals are discussed in detail. Some applications to rational cuspidal plane curves and to line arrangements are also given.
We describe the 0-th Fitting ideal of the Jacobian module of a plane curve in terms of determinants involving the Jacobian syzygies of this curve. This leads to new characterizations of maximal Tjurina curves, that is of non free plane curves, whose global Tjurina number equals an upper bound given by A. du Plessis and C.T.C. Wall.
We show that the defining ideal of every monomial curve in the affine or projective three-dimensional space can be set-theoretically defined by three binomial equations, two of which set-theoretically define a determinantal ideal generated by the 2-minors of a $2\times 3$ matrix with monomial entries.
A criterion is given in order that the ideals of a one branch curve singularity form at most 2-parameter families. Namely, we present a list of plane curve singularities from the Arnold's classification which are the smallest among all one branch singularities having at most 2-parameter families of ideals.
The goal of this paper is to produce a formula for the multiplier ideals of monomial space curves in the spirit of Howald's formula for the multiplier ideals of monomial ideals. This is achieved by constructing a toric blowup of affine space in such a way that a log resolution of the monomial curve may be constructed from this toric variety in a well controlled manner.
Thompson (2014) exhibits a formula for the multiplier ideal with multiplier lambda of a monomial curve C with ideal I as an intersection of a term coming from the I-adic valuation, the multiplier ideal of the term ideal of I, and terms coming from certain specified auxiliary valuations. This short note shows it suffices to consider only one auxiliary valuation. This improvement is achieved through a more intrinsic approach, reduction to the toric case.
We investigate Borel ideals on the Hilbert scheme components of arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) codimension two schemes in P^n. We give a basic necessary criterion for a Borel ideal to be on such a component. Then considering ACM curves in P^3 on a quadric we compute in several examples all the Borel ideals on their Hilbert scheme component. Based on this we conjecture which Borel ideals are on such a component, and for a range of Borel ideals we prove that they are on the component.
By using Mather-Jacobian multiplier ideals, we first prove a formula on comparing Grauert-Riemenschneider canonical sheaf with canonical sheaf of a variety over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. Then we turn to study Mather-Jacobian multiplier ideals on algebraic curve, in which case the definition of Mather-Jacobian multiplier ideal can be extended to a ground field of any characteristic. We show that Mather-Jacobian multiplier ideal on curves is essentially the same as an integrally closed ideal. Finally by comparing conductor ideal with Mather-Jacobian multiplier ideal, …
Given a parametrization of a rational plane algebraic curve C, some explicit adjoint pencils on C are described in terms of determinants. Moreover, some generators of the Rees algebra associated to this parametrization are presented. The main ingredient developed in this paper is a detailed study of the elimination ideal of two homogeneous polynomials in two homogeneous variables that form a regular sequence.
We present new algorithms for computing adjoint ideals of curves and thus, in the planar case, adjoint curves. With regard to terminology, we follow Gorenstein who states the adjoint condition in terms of conductors. Our main algorithm yields the Gorenstein adjoint ideal G of a given curve as the intersection of what we call local Gorenstein adjoint ideals. Since the respective local computations do not depend on each other, our approach is inherently parallel. Over the rationals, further parallelization is achieved by a modular version of the algorithm which first computes a number of the cha…
We show several new inequalities found recently that the basic sequence of the saturated homogeneous ideal I of an integral curve in P^3 must satisfy. Then we compare our results with Cook's assertions on the generic initial ideal of I, carrying out numerical computations with the use of a computer. The outcome is that we have obtained new restrictions on the generic initial ideal of I. When the characteristic of k is zero, the basic sequence of a homogeneous ideal I in a polynomial ring over an infinite field k is a sequence of the degrees of the minimal generators of the generic initial idea…
We consider a classification problem of ideals by codimension in case rings are the local rings of irreducible curve singularities. In this paper, we introduce a systematic method to solve this problem.
A tetrahedral curve is an unmixed, usually non-reduced, one-dimensional subscheme of projective 3-space whose homogeneous ideal is the intersection of powers of the ideals of the six coordinate lines. The second and third authors have shown that these curves have very nice combinatorial properties, and they have made a careful study of the even liaison classes of these curves. We build on this work by showing that they are "almost always" componentwise linear, i.e. their homogeneous ideals have the property that for any d, the degree d component of the ideal generates a new ideal whose minimal…
In this paper we consider the problem of finding explicitly canonical ideals of one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local rings. We show that Gorenstein ideals contained in a high power of the maximal ideal are canonical ideals. In the codimension two case, from a Hilbert-Burch resolution, we show how to construct canonical ideals of curve singularities. Finally, we translate the problem of the analytic classification of curve singularities to the classification of local Artin Gorenstein rings with suitable length.
In this article we produce Groebner bases for the defining ideal of a monomial curve that corresponds to an almost arithmetic sequence of positive integers, correcting previous work of Sengupta,(2003).
In this paper, we are interested in the generic initial ideals of \textit{singular} projective curves with respect to the graded lexicographic order. Let $C$ be a \textit{singular} irreducible projective curve of degree $d\geq 5$ with the arithmetic genus $ρ_a(C)$ in $\p^r$ where $r\ge 3$. If $M(I_C)$ is the regularity of the lexicographic generic initial ideal of $I_C$ in a polynomial ring $k[x_0,..., x_r]$ then we prove that $M(I_C)$ is $1+\binom{d-1}{2}-ρ_a(C)$ which is obtained from the monomial $$ x_{r-3} x_{r-1}\,^{\binom{d-1}{2}-ρ_a(C)}, $$ provided that $\dim\Tan_p(C)=2$ for every sing…
Using recent work by Erman-Sam-Snowden, we show that finitely generated ideals in the ring of bounded-degree formal power series in infinitely many variables have finitely generated Gröbner bases relative to the graded reverse lexicographic order. We then combine this result with the first author's work on topological Noetherianity of polynomial functors to give an algorithmic proof of the following statement: ideals in polynomial rings generated by a fixed number of homogeneous polynomials of fixed degrees only have a finite number of possible generic initial ideals, independently of the numb…
The stratum St(J,<) (the homogeneous stratum Sth(J,<) respectively) of a monomial ideal J in a polynomial ring R is the family of all (homogeneous) ideals of R whose initial ideal with respect to the term order < is J. St(J,<) and Sth(J,<) have a natural structure of affine schemes. Moreover they are homogeneous w.r.t. a non-standard grading called level. This property allows us to draw consequences that are interesting from both a theoretical and a computational point of view. For instance a smooth stratum is always isomorphic to an affine space (Corollary 3.6). As applications, in Sec. 5 we …
In this paper we study ideals of points lying on rational normal curves defined in projective plane and projective $ 3 $-space. We give an explicit formula for the value of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity for their ordinary powers. Moreover, we compare the $ m $-th symbolic and ordinary powers for such ideals in order to show whenever the $ m $-th symbolic defect is non-zero.
We prove that if the initial ideal of a prime ideal is Borel-fixed and the dimension of the quotient ring is less than or equal to two, then given any non-minimal associated prime ideal of the initial ideal it contains another associated prime ideal of dimension one larger.
This paper mainly focuses on commutative local domains of dimension one. We then obtain a criterion for a ring to have a finite number of trace ideals in terms of integrally closed ideals. We also explore properties of such rings related to birational extensions, reflexive ideals, and reflexive Ulrich modules. Special attention is given in the case of numerical semigroup rings of non-gap four. We then obtain a criterion for a ring to have a finite number of reflexive ideals up to isomorphism. Non-domains arising from fiber products are also explored.
In this manuscript we shall give an explicit formula for the jumping numbers of a simple complete ideal in a two-dimensional regular local ring. In particular, we obtain a formula for the jumping numbers of an analytically irreducible plane curve. We then show that the jumping numbers determine the equisingularity class of the curve.
For the ideal $\mathfrak{p}$ in $k[x, y, z]$ defining a space monomial curve, we show that $\mathfrak{p}^{(2 n - 1)} \subseteq \mathfrak{m} \mathfrak{p}^{n}$ for some positive integer $n$, where $\mathfrak{m}$ is the maximal ideal $(x, y, z)$. Moreover, the smallest such $n$ is determined. It turns out that there is a counterexample to a claim due to Grifo, Huneke, and Mukundan, which states that $\mathfrak{p}^{(3)} \subseteq \mathfrak{m} \mathfrak{p}^2$ if $k$ is a field of characteristic not $3$; however, the stable Harbourne conjecture holds for space monomial curves as they claimed.
Following the approach in the book "Commutative Algebra", by D. Eisenbud, where the author describes the generic initial ideal by means of a suitable total order on the terms of an exterior power, we introduce first the generic initial extensor of a subset of a Grassmannian and then the double-generic initial ideal of a so-called GL-stable subset of a Hilbert scheme. We discuss the features of these new notions and introduce also a partial order which gives another useful description of them. The double-generic initial ideals turn out to be the appropriate points to understand some geometric p…
We prove that the initial ideal of the defining ideal of a monomial curve that corresponds to an almost arithmetic sequence of positive integers is Ratliff-Rush closed.
The toric ideal of a $d$-dimensional flow polytope has an initial ideal generated by square-free monomials of degree at most $d$. The toric ideal of a flow polytope of dimension at most four has an initial ideal generated by square-free monomials of degree at most two, with the only exception of the four-dimensional Birkhoff polytope, whose toric ideal has an initial ideal generated by a square-free cubic monomial. The proof is based on a method to classify certain compressed flow polytopes, and a construction of a quadratic pulling triangulation of them. Along the way compressed flow polytope…
We compute the initial ideals, with respect to certain conveniently chosen term orders, of ideals of tangent cones at torus fixed points to Schubert varieties in orthogonal Grassmannians. The initial ideals turn out to be square-free monomial ideals and therefore Stanley-Reisner face rings of simplicial complexes. We describe these complexes. The maximal faces of these complexes encode certain sets of non-intersecting lattice paths.
In this paper we use some results related to regularity, Betti numbers and reduction of generic initial ideals, showing their stability in passing from an ideal to its initial ideal if the last has some simple properties.
Bounds for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and Hilbert coefficients are given in terms of the arithmetic degree (if the ring is reduced) or in terms of the defining degrees. From this it follows that there exists only a finite number of Hilbert functions associated to reduced algebras over an algebraically closed field with a given arithmetic degree and dimension. A good bound is also given for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of initial ideals which depends neither on term orders nor on the coordinates, and holds for any field.
In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of the regularity of symbolic powers of ideals of points in a weighted projective plane. By a result of Cutkosky, Ein and Lazarsfeld, regularity of such powers behaves asymptotically like a linear function. We study the difference between regularity of such powers and this linear function. Under some conditions, we prove that this difference is bounded, or eventually periodic. As a corollary we show that, if there exists a negative curve, then the regularity of symbolic powers of a monomial space curve is eventually a periodic linear function. We …
The Poincaré series of a ring associated to a plane curve was defined by Campillo, Delgado, and Gusein-Zade. This series, defined through the value semigroup of the curve, encodes the topological information of the curve. In this paper we extend the definition of Poincaré series to the class of good semigroup ideals, to which value semigroups of curves belong. Using this definition we generalize a result of Pol: under suitable assumptions, given good semigroup ideals E and K, with K canonical, the Poincaré series of K-E is symmetric to the Poincaré series of E.
The paper has two goals: the study the associated graded ring of contracted homogeneous ideals in $K[x,y]$ and the study of the Groebner fan of the ideal $P$ of the rational normal curve in ${\bf P}^d$. These two problems are, quite surprisingly, very tightly related. We completely classify the contracted ideals with a Cohen-Macaulay associated graded rings in terms of the numerical invariants arising from Zariski's factorization. We determine explicitly all the initial ideals (monomial or not) of $P$ that are Cohen-Macaulay.
Generic initial ideals (gins in short) were systematically introduced by Galligo in 1974 under the name of Grauert invariants since they appeared apparently first in works of Grauert and Hironaka. Ever since they are of interest in commutative algebra and indirectly in algebraic geometry. Recently Mayes in a series of articles associated to gins geometric objects called limiting shapes. The construction resembles that of Okunkov bodies but there are some differences as well. This work is motivated by Mayes articles and explores the connections between gins, limiting shapes and some asymptotic …
We compute the reverse lexicographic generic initial ideals of the powers of a 2-complete intersection ideal I. In particular, we give six algorithms to compute these generic initial ideals, the choice of which depends on the power and on the relative degrees of the minimal generators of I.
The generic initial ideals of a given ideal are rather recent invariants. Not much is known about these objects, and it turns out to be very difficult to compute them. The main purpose of this paper is to study the behaviour of generic initial ideals with respect to the operation of taking distractions. Our main result states that the revlex generic initial ideal of the distraction of a strongly stable ideal is the ideal itself. In proving this fact we develop some new results related to distractions, stable and strongly stable ideals. We show, for example, that the gin of a "principal" stable…
In this paper, we survey the theory of Cartwright-Sturmfels ideals. These are Z^n-graded ideals, whose multigraded generic initial ideal is radical. Cartwright-Sturmfels ideals have surprising properties, mostly stemming from the fact that their Hilbert scheme only contains one Borel-fixed point. This has consequences, e.g., on their universal Groebner bases and on the family of their initial ideals. In this paper, we discuss several known classes of Cartwright-Sturmfels ideals and we find a new one. Among determinantal ideals of same-size minors of a matrix of variables and Schubert determina…
The symbolic powers $I^{(n)}$ of a radical ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring consist of the functions that vanish up to order $n$ in the variety defined by $I$. These do not necessarily coincide with the ordinary algebraic powers $I^n$, but it is natural to compare the two notions. The containment problem consists of determining the values of $n$ and $m$ for which $I^{(n)} \subseteq I^m$ holds. When $I$ is an ideal of height $2$ in a regular ring, $I^{(3)} \subseteq I^2$ may fail, but we show that this containment does hold for the defining ideal of the space monomial curve $(t^a, t^b, t^c)$. Mor…
We study the generic initial ideals (gin) of certain ideals that arise in modular invariant theory. For all cases an explicit generating set is known we calculate the generic initial ideal of the Hilbert ideal of a cyclic group of prime order for all monomial orders. We also clarify the Klein four group and note that its Hilbert ideals are Borel fixed with certain orderings of the variables. In all situations we consider, there is a monomial order such that the gin of the Hilbert ideal is equal to its initial ideal. Along the way we show that gin respects a permutation of the variables in the …
We prove that the $d$-component of the generic initial ideal, with respect to the reverse lexicographic order, of an ideal generated by a regular sequence of homogeneous polynomials of degree $d$ is revlex in a particular, but important, case. Using this property, we compute the generic initial ideal for several complete intersection with strong Lefschetz property.
For a smooth curve of genus $g$ embedded by a line bundle of degree at least $2g+3$ we show that the ideal sheaf of the secant variety is 5-regular. This bound is sharp with respect to both the degree of the embedding and the bound on the regularity. Further, we show that the secant variety is projectively normal for the generic embedding of degree at least $2g+3$. We also give a conjectural description of the resolutions of the ideals of higher secant varieties.
Finite generation of the symbolic Rees ring of a space monomial prime ideal of a 3-dimensional weighted polynomial ring is a very interesting problem. Negative curves play important roles in finite generation of these rings. We are interested in the structure of the negative curve. We shall prove that negative curves are rational in many cases. We also see that the Cox ring of the blow-up of a toric variety at the point (1,1,...,1) coincides with the extended symbolic Rees ring of an ideal of a polynomial ring. For example, Roberts' second counterexample to Cowsik's question (and Hilbert's 14t…
Via the theory of reverse lexicographic squarefree initial ideals of toric ideals, we give a new class of Gorenstein Fano polytopes (reflexive polytopes) arising from a pair of stable set polytopes of perfect graphs.
We construct a noncoherent initial ideal of an ideal in the exterior algebra of order 6, answering a question of D. Maclagan (2000). We also give a method for constructing noncoherent initial ideals in exterior algebras using certain noncoherent term orders.
Let I be either the ideal of maximal minors or the ideal of 2-minors of a row graded or column graded matrix of linear forms L. In two previous papers we showed that I is a Cartwright-Sturmfels ideal, that is, the multigraded generic initial ideal gin(I) of I is radical (and essentially independent of the term order chosen). In this paper we describe generators and prime decomposition of gin(I) in terms of data related to the linear dependences among the row or columns of the submatrices of L. In the case of 2-minors we also give a closed formula for its multigraded Hilbert series.
