To various kinds of quadratic functors, homotopy types of two stage spaces are assigned. It is investigated what kind of homotopy types are obtainable in this way.
We study polynomial functors of degree 2, called quadratic, with values in the category of abelian groups $Ab$, and whose source category is an arbitrary category $\C$ with null object such that all objects are colimits of copies of a generating object $E$ which is small and regular projective; this includes all pointed algebraic varieties. More specifically, we are interested in such quadratic functors $F$ from $\C$ to $Ab$ which preserve filtered colimits and suitable coequalizers; one may take reflexive ones if $\C$ is Mal'cev and Barr exact. A functorial equivalence is established between …
We show that an $f$-localization functor $L_f$ commutes with cofiber sequences of $(N-1)$-connected finite complexes if and only if its restriction to the collection of $(N-1)$-connected finite complexes is $R$-localization for some unital subring $R\sseq\mathbb{Q}$. This leads to a homotopy-theoretical characterization of the rationalization functor: the restriction of $L_f$ to simply-connected spaces (not just the finite complexes) is rationalization if and only if $L_f(S^2)$ is nontrivial and simply-connected, $L_f$ preserves cofiber sequences of simply-connected finite complexes, and for e…
In previous work, we defined the category of functors Fquad, associated to vector spaces over the field with two elements equipped with a nondegenerate quadratic form. In this paper, we define a special family of objects in the category Fquad, named the mixed functors. We give the complete decompositions of two elements of this family that give rise to two new infinite families of simple objects in the category Fquad.
In this paper, we continue the study of the category of functors Fquad, associated to F_2-vector spaces equipped with a nondegenerate quadratic form, initiated in two previous papers of the author. We define a filtration of the standard projective objects in Fquad; this refines to give a decomposition into indecomposable factors of the two first standard projective objects in Fquad. As an application of these two decompositions, we give a complete description of the polynomial functors of the category Fquad.
We first show that simply connected co-$H$-spaces and connected $H$-spaces can be uniquely decomposed into prime factors in the homotopy category of pointed $p$-local spaces of finite type, which is used to develop a $p$-local version of Gray's correspondence between homotopy types of prime co-$H$-spaces and homotopy types of prime $H$-spaces, and the split fibration which connects them as well. Further, we use the unique decomposition theorem to study the homotopy rigidity problem for classic functors. Among others, we prove that $ΣΩ$ and $Ω$ are homotopy rigid on simply connected $p$-local c…
The normalized singular chains of a path connected pointed space $X$ may be considered as a connected $E_{\infty}$-coalgebra $\mathbf{C}_*(X)$ with the property that the $0^{\text{th}}$ homology of its cobar construction, which is naturally a cocommutative bialgebra, has an antipode, i.e. it is a cocommutative Hopf algebra. We prove that a continuous map of path connected pointed spaces $f: X\to Y$ is a weak homotopy equivalence if and only if $\mathbf{C}_*(f): \mathbf{C}_*(X)\to \mathbf{C}_*(Y)$ is an $\mathbfΩ$-quasi-isomorphism, i.e. a quasi-isomorphism of dg algebras after applying the cob…
We define an ``algebraic'' version of the Goodwillie tower, P_n^alg F(X), that depends only on the behavior of F on coproducts of X. When F is a functor to connected spaces or grouplike H-spaces, the functor P_n^alg F is the base of a fibration whose fiber is the simplicial space associated to a cotriple built from the (n+1) cross effect of the functor F. When the connectivity of X is large enough (for example, when F is the identity functor and X is connected), the algebraic Goodwillie tower agrees with the ordinary (topological) Goodwillie tower, so this theory gives a way of studying the Go…
Using the functor of Baumslag rationalization of groups we construct a functor on the category of all (non necessarily simply connected) spaces that extends the classical rationalization of simply connected spaces. We study this functor and compare it with other extensions of the classical rationalization: Bousfield-Kan $\mathbb Q$-completion; Bousfield's homology rationalization; Gómez-Tato--Halperin--Tantré's $π_1$-fiberwise rationalization; and the localization with respect to the maps $n:S^1\to S^1$ that we call $Ω$-rationalization.
In this paper, we define the functor category Fquad associated to vector spaces over the field with two elements, F\_2, equipped with a quadratic form. We show the existence of a fully-faithful, exact functor ι: \F \to Fquad, which preserves simple objects, where \F is the category of functors from the category of finite dimensional F\_2-vector spaces to the category of all F\_2-vector spaces. We define the subcategory Fiso of Fquad, which is equivalent to the product of the categories of modules over the orthogonal groups; the inclusion is a fully-faithful functor κ: Fiso \to Fquad which pres…
To every homotopy n-nilpotent group, defined in earlier work by Dwyer and the author, we associate an endofunctor of pointed spaces and prove that it is looped and n-excisive. As a tool we prove that $ΩP_n({\rm id})$ commutes with sifted colimits of connected spaces.
We prove the following generalization of a classical result of Adams: for any pointed and connected topological space $(X,b)$, that is not necessarily simply connected, the cobar construction of the differential graded (dg) coalgebra of normalized singular chains in $X$ with vertices at $b$ is weakly equivalent as a differential graded associative algebra (dga) to the singular chains on the Moore based loop space of $X$ at $b$. We deduce this statement from several more general categorical results of independent interest. We construct a functor $\mathfrak{C}_{\square_c}$ from simplicial sets t…
We give a short and streamlined proof of the following statement recently proven by the author and M. Zeinalian: the cobar construction of the dg coassociative coalgebra of normalized singular chains on a path-connected pointed space is naturally quasi-isomorphic as a dg associative algebra to the singular chains on the based loop space. This extends a classical theorem of F. Adams originally proven for simply connected spaces. Our proof is based on relating the cobar functor to the left adjoint of the homotopy coherent nerve functor.
In this paper one considers three homotopy functors on the category of manifolds, $hH^\ast, cH^\ast, sH^\ast,$ and parallel them with other three homotopy functors on the category of connected commutative differential graded algebras, $HH^\ast, CH^\ast, SH^\ast.$ If $P$ is a smooth 1-connected manifold and the algebra is the de-Rham algebra of $P$ the two pairs of functors agree but in general do not. The functors $ HH^\ast $ and $CH^\ast$ can be also derived as Hochschild resp. cyclic homology of commutative differential graded algebra, but this is not the way they are introduced here. The th…
In his "Algebraic K-theory of topological spaces II" Waldhausen proved that his functor A(X) splits: There is a canonical map from the stable homotopy of X which has a retraction up to weak equivalence. We adapt Waldhausen's proof to obtain a calculation of the Differential (in the sense of Goodwillie's "Calculus I") of A(X) at any path-connected base space.
Which spaces look like an n-sphere through the eyes of the n-th Postnikov section functor and the n-connected cover functor? The answer is what we call the Postnikov genus of the n-sphere. We define in fact the notion of localization genus for any homotopical localization functor in the sense of Bousfield and Dror Farjoun. This includes exotic genus notions related for example to Neisendorfer localization, or the classical Mislin genus, which corresponds to rationalization.
In a previous work, by extending the classical Quillen construction to the non-simply connected case, we have built a pair of adjoint functors, 'model' and 'realization', between the categories of simplicial sets and complete differential graded Lie algebras. This paper is a follow up of this work. We show that when X is a finite connected simplicial set, then the realization of the model of X is the disjoint union of the Bousfield-Kan completion of X with an external point. We also define a model category structure on the category of complete differential graded algebras making the two previo…
For a functor with smash product F and an F-bimodule P, we construct an invariant W(F;P) which is an analog of TR(F) with coefficients. We study the structure of this invariant and its finite-stage approximations W_n(F;P), and conclude that for F the FSP associated to a ring R and P the FSP associated to the simplicial R-bimodule M[X] (with M a simplicial R-bimodule, X a simplicial set), the functor sending X to W_n(R;M[X]) is the nth stage of the Goodwillie calculus Taylor tower of the functor which sends X to the reduced K-theory spectrum of R with coefficients in M[X]. Thus the functor send…
We introduce the homotopy surface category of a space which generalizes the 1+1-dimensional cobordism category of circles and surfaces to the situation where one introduces a background space. We explain how for a simply connected background space, monoidal functors from this category to vector spaces can be interpreted in terms of Frobenius algebras with additional structure.
In this paper we recover Bousfield's computation of $ν_1$-periodic homotopy groups of simply connected, finite $H$-spaces from \cite{Bou99} using the techniques of Goodwillie calculus. This is done through first computing André-Quillen cohomology over the monad $\mathbb{T}$ that encodes the power operations of complex $K$-theory. Then lifting this computation to computing $K$-theory of topological André-Quillen cohomology, and then using results of Behrens and Rezk relating it back to the Bousfield-Kuhn functor. The fact that we recovers the result of Bousfield allows us to conclude $ν_1$-peri…
We study profinite completion of spaces in the model category of profinite spaces and construct a rigidification of the completion functors of Artin-Mazur and Sullivan which extends also to non-connected spaces. Another new aspect is an equivariant profinite completion functor and equivariant fibrant replacement functor for a profinite group acting on a space. This is crucial for applications where, for example, Galois groups are involved, or for profinite Teichmueller theory where equivariant completions are applied. Along the way we collect and survey the most important known results about p…
For smooth manifolds $M$ and $N$, let $\Ebar(M, N)$ be the homotopy fiber of the map $\Emb(M, N)\longrightarrow \Imm(M, N)$. Consider the functor from the category of Euclidean spaces to the category of spectra, defined by the formula $V\mapsto Σ^\infty\Ebar(M, N\times V)$. In this paper, we describe the Taylor polynomials of this functor, in the sense of M. Weiss' orthogonal calculus, in the case when $N$ is a nice open submanifold of a Euclidean space. This leads to a description of the derivatives of this functor when $N$ is a tame stably parallelizable manifold (we believe that the paralle…
In our earlier papers we constructed examples of 2-dimensional nonaspherical simply-connected cell-like Peano continua, called {\sl Snake space}. In the sequel we introduced the functor $SC(-,-)$ defined on the category of all spaces with base points and continuous mappings. For the circle $S^1$, the space $SC(S^1, \ast)$ is a Snake space. In the present paper we study the higher-dimensional homology and homotopy properties of the spaces $SC(Z, \ast)$ for any path-connected compact spaces $Z$.
For a locally path connected topological space, the topological fundamental group is discrete if and only if the space is semilocally simply-connected. While functoriality of the topological fundamental group for arbitrary topological spaces remains an open question, the topological fundamental group is always a homogeneous space.
We prove that the stabilization of spaces functor---the classical construction of associating a spectrum to a pointed space by tensoring with the sphere spectrum---satisfies homotopical descent on objects and morphisms. This is the stabilization analog of the Quillen-Sullivan theory main result that the rational chains (resp. cochains) functor participates in a derived equivalence with certain coalgebra (resp. algebra) complexes, after restriction to 1-connected spaces up to rational equivalence. In more detail, we prove that the stabilization of spaces functor participates in a derived equiva…
We show that if A is a simply connected, finite, pointed CW-complex then the mapping spaces Map(A, -) are preserved by the localization functors only if A has the rational homotopy type of a wedge of spheres of a fixed dimension.
In this paper we define a secondary Brown-Kervaire quadratic forms. Among the applications we obtain a complete classification of (n-2)-connected 2n-dimensional framed manifolds up to homeomorphism and homotopy equivalence, . In particular, we prove that the homotopy type of such manifolds determine their homeomorphism type.
Let P be a closed smooth (4j-2)-connected 8j-manifold. We complete Wilkens' classification of the manifolds P for j = 1,2 and give an alternative proof to Wall's classification of the manifolds for j > 2. The Hopf-invariant-one dimensions (j=1,2) are characteristed by the fact that the quadratic linking functions which classify may be inhomogeneous. Hence we also extend the classification of (homogeneous) quadratic linking forms on finite abelian groups (due to Nikulin) to the inhomogeneous case.
Given a simple, simply connected compact Lie group G, let M be a G-space. We describe the quantization of the category of positive energy representations of the loop group of G at a given level and parametrized over the loop space LM. This procedure is described in terms of dominant K-theory of the loop group evaluated on the phase space given by the tangent bundle of basic gauge fields about a circle (parametrized over LM and with gauge symmetries given by the loop group LG). As such, our construction gives rise to a (categorical) BV-BRST type quantization for families of rational 2d CFTs wit…
In their previous work, Barraud and Cornea enriched the Lagrangian Floer complex by adding cubical chains in the based loop space of the Lagrangian, and recovered the Leray-Serre spectral sequence of the based path space fibration, assuming that the Lagrangian is weakly exact and simply connected. In the present article, we remove the simple connectivity assumption and adapt the construction to any Hurewicz fibration. To this end, we introduce a stronger notion of local systems than the classical one, as a topological functor from the free path space of a manifold to the category of topologica…
