We define a bijection that transforms an alternating sign matrix A with one -1 into a pair (N,E) where N is a (so called) ``neutral'' alternating sign matrix (with one -1) and E is an integer. The bijection preserves the classical parameters of Mills, Robbins and Rumsey as well as three new parameters (including E). It translates vertical reflection of A into vertical reflection of N. A hidden symmetry allows the interchange of E with one of the remaining two new parameters. A second bijection transforms (N,E) into a configuration of lattice paths called ``mixed configuration''.
Halved monotone triangles are a generalisation of vertically symmetric alternating sign matrices (VSASMs). We provide a weighted enumeration of halved monotone triangles with respect to a parameter which generalises the number of $-1$s in a VSASM. Among other things, this enables us to establish a generating function for vertically symmetric alternating sign trapezoids. Our results are mainly presented in terms of constant term expressions. For the proofs, we exploit Fischer's method of operator formulae as a key tool.
In 2007, the first author gave an alternative proof of the refined alternating sign matrix theorem by introducing a linear equation system that determines the refined ASM numbers uniquely. Computer experiments suggest that the numbers appearing in a conjecture concerning the number of vertically symmetric alternating sign matrices with respect to the position of the first 1 in the second row of the matrix establish the solution of a linear equation system similar to the one for the ordinary refined ASM numbers. In this paper we show how our attempt to prove this fact naturally leads to a more …
We prove refined enumeration results on several symmetry classes as well as related classes of alternating sign matrices with respect to classical boundary statistics, using the six-vertex model of statistical physics. More precisely, we study vertically symmetric, vertically and horizontally symmetric, vertically and horizontally perverse, off-diagonally and off-antidiagonally symmetric, vertically and off-diagonally symmetric, quarter turn symmetric as well as quasi quarter turn symmetric alternating sign matrices. Our results prove conjectures of Fischer, Duchon and Robbins.
Motivated by a recent conjecture of Zabrocki, Wallach described the alternants in the super-coinvariant algebra of the symmetric group in one set of commuting and one set of anti-commuting variables under the diagonal action. We give a type-independent generalization of Wallach's result to all real reflection groups $G$. As an intermediate step, we explicitly describe the alternating super-polynomials in $k[V] \otimes Λ(V)$ for all complex reflection groups, providing an analogue of a classic result of Solomon which describes the invariant super-polynomials in $k[V] \otimes Λ(V^*)$. Using our …
In a previous article [math.CO/9712207], we derived the alternating-sign matrix (ASM) theorem from the Izergin-Korepin determinant for a partition function for square ice with domain wall boundary. Here we show that the same argument enumerates three other symmetry classes of alternating-sign matrices: VSASMs (vertically symmetric ASMs), even HTSASMs (half-turn-symmetric ASMs), and even QTSASMs (quarter-turn-symmetric ASMs). The VSASM enumeration was conjectured by Mills; the others by Robbins [math.CO/0008045]. We introduce several new types of ASMs: UASMs (ASMs with a U-turn side), UUASMs (t…
In this paper, we investigate statistics on alternating words under correspondence between ``possible reflection paths within several layers of glass'' and ``alternating words''. For $v=(v_1,v_2,\cdots,v_n)\in\mathbb{Z}^{n}$, we say $P$ is a path within $n$ glass plates corresponding to $v$, if $P$ has exactly $v_i$ reflections occurring at the $i^{\rm{th}}$ plate for all $i\in\{1,2,\cdots,n\}$. We give a recursion for the number of paths corresponding to $v$ satisfying $v \in \mathbb{Z}^n$ and $\sum_{i\geq 1} v_i=m$. Also, we establish recursions for statistics around the number of paths corr…
An alternating sign matrix is a square matrix with entries 1, 0 and -1 such that the sum of the entries in each row and each column is equal to 1 and the nonzero entries alternate in sign along each row and each column. To some of the symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices and their variations, G. Kuperberg associate square ice models with appropriate boundary conditions, and give determinanat and Pfaffian formulae for the partition functions. In this paper, we utilize several determinant and Pfaffian identities to evaluate Kuperberg's determinants and Pfaffians, and express the round p…
We introduce a family of planar regions, called Aztec diamonds, and study the ways in which these regions can be tiled by dominoes. Our main result is a generating function that not only gives the number of domino tilings of the Aztec diamond of order $n$ but also provides information about the orientation of the dominoes (vertical versus horizontal) and the accessibility of one tiling from another by means of local modifications. Several proofs of the formula are given. The problem turns out to have connections with the alternating sign matrices of Mills, Robbins, and Rumsey, as well as the s…
Monotone triangles are certain triangular arrays of integers, which correspond to $n \times n$ alternating sign matrices when prescribing $(1,2,...,n)$ as bottom row of the monotone triangle. In this article we define halved monotone triangles, a specialization of which correspond to vertically symmetric alternating sign matrices. We derive an operator formula for the number of halved monotone triangles with prescribed bottom row which is analogous to our operator formula for the number of ordinary monotone triangle.
In this paper we settle a weak version of a conjecture (i.e. Conjecture 6) by Mills, Robbins and Rumsey in the paper "Self-complementary totally symmetric plane partitions" (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 42, 277-292). In other words we show that the number of shifted plane partitions invariant under an involution is equal to the number of alternating sign matrices invariant under the vertical flip. We also give a determinantal formula for the general conjecture (Conjecture 6), but this determinant is still hard to evaluate. In this paper we introduce two new classes of domino plane partitions, one …
The integrable loop model with mixed boundary conditions based on the 1-boundary extended Temperley--Lieb algebra with loop weight 1 is considered. The corresponding qKZ equation is introduced and its minimal degree solution described. As a result, the sum of the properly normalized components of the ground state in size L is computed and shown to be equal to the number of Horizontally and Vertically Symmetric Alternating Sign Matrices of size 2L+3. A refined counting is also considered.
In 2005 J.L. Waldspurger proved the following theorem: given a finite real reflection group $W$, the closed positive root cone is tiled by the images of the open weight cone under the action of the linear transformations $id-w$. Shortly thereafter E. Meinrencken extended the result to affine Weyl groups. P.V. Bibikov and V.S. Zhgoon then gave a uniform proof for a discrete reflection group acting on a simply-connected space of constant curvature. In this paper we show that the Waldspurger and Meinrenken theorems of type A give a new perspective on the combinatorics of the symmetric group. In p…
The nineteen-vertex model on a periodic lattice with an anti-diagonal twist is investigated. Its inhomogeneous transfer matrix is shown to have a simple eigenvalue, with the corresponding eigenstate displaying intriguing combinatorial features. Similar results were previously found for the same model with a diagonal twist. The eigenstate for the anti-diagonal twist is explicitly constructed using the quantum separation of variables technique. A number of sum rules and special components are computed and expressed in terms of Kuperberg's determinants for partition functions of the inhomogeneous…

To any $n \times n$ Latin square $L$, we may associate a unique sequence of mutually orthogonal permutation matrices $P = P_1, P_2, ..., P_n$ such that $L = L(P) = \sum kP_k$. Brualdi and Dahl (2018) described a generalisation of a Latin square, called an alternating sign hypermatrix Latin-like square (ASHL), by replacing $P$ with an alternating sign hypermatrix (ASHM). An ASHM is an $n \times n \times n$ (0,1,-1)-hypermatrix in which the non-zero elements in each row, column, and vertical line alternate in sign, beginning and ending with $1$. Since every sequence of $n$ mutually orthogonal pe…
Using determinant representations for partition functions of the corresponding square ice models and the method proposed recently by one of the authors, we investigate refined enumerations of vertically symmetric alternating-sign matrices, off-diagonally symmetric alternating-sign matrices and alternating-sign matrices with U-turn boundary. For all these cases the explicit formulas for refined enumerations are found. It particular, Kutin-Yuen conjecture is proved.
We examine the groundstate wavefunction of the rotor model for different boundary conditions. Three conjectures are made on the appearance of numbers enumerating alternating sign matrices. In addition to those occurring in the O($n=1$) model we find the number $A_{\rm V}(2m+1;3)$, which 3-enumerates vertically symmetric alternating sign matrices.
We study the enumeration of diagonally and antidiagonally symmetric alternating sign matrices (DASASMs) of fixed odd order by introducing a case of the six-vertex model whose configurations are in bijection with such matrices. The model involves a grid graph on a triangle, with bulk and boundary weights which satisfy the Yang-Baxter and reflection equations. We obtain a general expression for the partition function of this model as a sum of two determinantal terms, and show that at a certain point each of these terms reduces to a Schur function. We are then able to prove a conjecture of Robbin…
This work as an extension of our recent paper where we have found a numerical evidence for the fact that the numbers of the states of the fully packed loop (FPL) model with fixed link-patterns coincide with the components of the ground state vector of the dense O(1) loop model for periodic boundary conditions and an even number of sites. Here we give two new conjectures related to different boundary conditions. Namely, we suggest that the numbers of the half-turn symmetric states of the FPL model with fixed link-patterns coincide with the components of the ground state vector of the dense O(1)…
For each $α\in \{0,1,-1 \}$, we count diagonally and antidiagonally symmetric alternating sign matrices (DASASMs) of fixed odd order with a maximal number of $α$'s along the diagonal and the antidiagonal, as well as DASASMs of fixed odd order with a minimal number of $0$'s along the diagonal and the antidiagonal. In these enumerations, we encounter product formulas that have previously appeared in plane partition or alternating sign matrix counting, namely for the number of all alternating sign matrices, the number of cyclically symmetric plane partitions in a given box, and the number of vert…
