An infinite summation formula of Hall-Littlewood polynomials due to Kawanaka is generalized to a finite summation formula, which implies, as applications, twelve multiple q-identities of Rogers-Ramanujan type.
We give a new theta-function identity, a special case of which is utilised to prove Kawanaka's Macdonald polynomial conjecture. The theta-function identity further yields a transformation formula for multivariable elliptic hypergeometric series which appears to be new even in the one-variable, basic case.
The initial purpose of this paper is to provide a combinatorial proof of the minor summation formula of Pfaffians based on the lattice path method. There we related Plücker relations with the minor summation formula of Pfaffians to simplify its proof by lattice paths. The second aim is to find a various applications of the minor summation formula. First we studied a variant of the Sundquist formula established in J. Alg. Combin. {\bf 5} (1996). Next we gave a simple proof of Kawanaka's formula concerning a $q$-series identity involving Schur functions in Osaka J. Math. {\bf 36} (1999). We also…
Shifting by \pm 1 powers sums: p_i \to p_i \pm 1 induces a transformation on symmetric functions that we detail in the case of Hall-Littlewood polynomials. By iteration, this gives a description of these polynomials in terms of plane partitions, as well as some generating functions. We recover in particular an identity of Warnaar related to Rogers-Ramanujan identities.
Fully inhomogeneous spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric rational functions $F_λ$ are multiparameter deformations of the classical Hall-Littlewood symmetric polynomials and can be viewed as partition functions in $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ higher spin six vertex models. We obtain a refined Littlewood identity expressing a weighted sum of $F_λ$'s over all partitions $λ$ with even multiplicities as a certain Pfaffian. This Pfaffian can be derived as a partition function of the six vertex model in a triangle with suitably decorated domain wall boundary conditions. The proof is based on the Yang-Baxter equation…
We use Young's raising operators to derive a Pieri rule for the ring generated by the indeterminates $h_{r,s}$ given in Macdonald's 9th Variation of the Schur functions. Under an appropriate specialisation of $h_{r,s}$, we derive the Pieri rule for the ring $\La(a)$ of double symmetric functions, which has a basis consisting of the double Schur functions. Together with a suitable interpretation of the Jacobi--Trudi identity, our Pieri rule allows us to obtain a new proof of a rule to calculate the Littlewood--Richardson polynomials, which gives a multiplication rule for the double Schur functi…
We prove an identity for Littlewood--Richardson coefficients conjectured by Pelletier and Ressayre (arXiv:2005.09877). The proof relies on a novel birational involution defined over any semifield.
We produce skew Pieri Rules for Hall--Littlewood functions in the spirit of Assaf and McNamara. The first two were conjectured by the first author. The key ingredients in the proofs are a q-binomial identity for skew partitions and a Hopf algebraic identity that expands products of skew elements in terms of the coproduct and the antipode.
Fully inhomogeneous spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric rational functions $\mathsf{F}_λ$ arise in the context of $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ higher spin six vertex models, and are multiparameter deformations of the classical Hall-Littlewood symmetric polynomials. We obtain a refined Cauchy identity expressing a weighted sum of the product of two $\mathsf{F}_λ$'s as a determinant. The determinant is of Izergin-Korepin type: it is the partition function of the six vertex model with suitably decorated domain wall boundary conditions. The proof of equality of two partition functions is based on the Yang-Baxter…
We prove an identity for Hall--Littlewood symmetric functions labelled by the Lie algebra A_2. Through specialization this yields a simple proof of the A_2 Rogers--Ramanujan identities of Andrews, Schilling and the author.
We prove two identities of Hall-Littlewood polynomials, which appeared recently in a paper by two of the authors. We also conjecture, and in some cases prove, new identities which relate infinite sums of symmetric polynomials and partition functions associated with symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices. These identities generalize those already found in our earlier paper, via the introduction of additional parameters. The left hand side of each of our identities is a simple refinement of a relevant Cauchy or Littlewood identity. The right hand side of each identity is (one of the two f…

A generalization of Newton's identity on symmetric functions is given. Using the generalized Newton identity we give a unified method to show the existence of Hall-Littlewood, Jack and Macdonald polynomials. We also give a simple proof of the Jing-Jözefiak formula for two-row Macdonald functions.
We discuss several well known results about Schur functions that can be proved using cancellations in alternating summations; notably we shall discuss the Pieri and Murnaghan-Nakayama rules, the Jacobi-Trudi identity and its dual (Von N{ä}gelsbach-Kostka) identity, their proofs using the correspondence with lattice paths of Gessel and Viennot, and finally the Littlewood-Richardson rule. Our our goal is to show that the mentioned statements are closely related, and can be proved using variations of the same basic technique. We also want to emphasise the central part that is played by matrices o…
We introduce a randomized Hall-Littlewood RSK algorithm and study its combinatorial and probabilistic properties. On the probabilistic side, a new model --- the Hall-Littlewood RSK field --- is introduced. Its various degenerations contain known objects (the stochastic six vertex model, the asymmetric simple exclusion process) as well as a variety of new ones. We provide formulas for a rich class of observables of these models, extending existing results about Macdonald processes. On the combinatorial side, we establish analogs of properties of the classical RSK algorithm: invertibility, symme…
Our results can be viewed as applications of algebraic combinatorics in random matrix theory. These applications are motivated by the predictive power of random matrix theory for the statistical behavior of the celebrated Riemann $ζ$-function (and $L$-functions in general), which was discovered by Montgomery (with regard to zeros of $L$-functions) and by Keating and Snaith (with regard to values of $L$-functions). The first results revolve around a new operation on partitions, which we call overlap. We prove two overlap identities for so-called Littlewood-Schur functions. The first overlap ide…
We introduce and study a generalization of Schur's $P$-/$Q$-functions associated to a polynomial sequence, which can be viewed as ``Macdonald's ninth variation'' for $P$-/$Q$-functions. This variation includes as special cases Schur's $P$-/$Q$-functions, Ivanov's factorial $P$-/$Q$-functions and the $t=-1$ specialization of Hall--Littlewood functions associated to the classical root systems. We establish several identities and properties such as generalizations of Schur's original definition of Schur's $Q$-functions, Cauchy-type identity, Józefiak--Pragacz--Nimmo formula for skew $Q$-functions…
We generalize the shuffle theorem and its $(km,kn)$ version, as conjectured by Haglund et al. and Bergeron et al., and proven by Carlsson and Mellit, and Mellit, respectively. In our version the $(km,kn)$ Dyck paths on the combinatorial side are replaced by lattice paths lying under a line segment whose $x$ and $y$ intercepts need not be integers, and the algebraic side is given either by a Schiffmann algebra operator formula or an equivalent explicit raising operator formula. We derive our combinatorial identity as the polynomial truncation of an identity of infinite series of $GL_{l}$ charac…
Macdonald superpolynomials provide a remarkably rich generalization of the usual Macdonald polynomials. The starting point of this work is the observation of a previously unnoticed stability property of the Macdonald superpolynomials when the fermionic sector m is sufficiently large: their decomposition in the monomial basis is then independent of m. These stable superpolynomials are readily mapped into bisymmetric polynomials, an operation that spoils the ring structure but drastically simplifies the associated vector space. Our main result is a factorization of the (stable) bisymmetric Macdo…
