Let F be a homogeneous real polynomial of even degree in any number of variables. We consider the problem of giving explicit conditions on the coefficients so that F is positive definite or positive semi-definite. In this note we produce a necessary condition for positivity and a sufficient condition for non-negativity, in terms of positivity or semi-positivity of a one-variable characteristic polynomial of F. Also, we review another well-known sufficient condition.
Let $f$ and $g$ be Weierstrass polynomials with coefficients in the ring of formal power series over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. Assume that $f$ is irreducible and quasi-ordinary. We show that if degree of $g$ is small enough and all monomials appearing in the resultant of $f$ and $g$ have orders big enough, then $g$ is irreducible and quasi-ordinary, generalizing Abhyankar's irreducibility criterion for plane analytic curves.
The condition of plane polynomial curve to be a line in well-known Abhyankar-Moh Theorem is replaced by weaker ones. A criterion of embedded line is obtained from this strong theorem: Two polynomials can generate the entire polynomial ring iff their derivatives can be generated.
We give a criterion for a quasi-ordinary polynomial to be irreducible. The criterion is based on the notion of approximate roots and that of generalized Newton polygons.
The generalisation of the well-known (Hilbert polynomial) criterion for flatness of a projective morphism of Noetherian schemes is given for the case of nonreduced base of the morphism.
A bivariate quartic form is a homogeneous bivariate polynomial of degree four. A criterion of positivity for such a form is known. In the present paper this criterion is reformulated in terms of pseudotensorial invariants of the form.
Two sets of conditions are presented for the compactness of a real plane algebraic curve, one sufficient and one necessary, in terms of the Newton polygon of the defining polynomial.
We prove an irreducibility criterion for polynomials with power series coefficients generalizing previous known results concerning quasi-ordinary polynomials.
We study positive entropy birational automorphisms of threefolds. We identify some conditions which imply that such an automorphism is non-regularizable. We show that this criterion applies in the example of a positive entropy birational automorphism of $\mathbb{P}^3$ constructed by J. Blanc, thus showing that for a general choice of parameters it is non-regularizable. Additionally, we establish a criterion which proves that the automorphism in this example does not preserve a structure of a fibration over a surface.
Coman, Guedj and Zeriahi proved that, for an ample line bundle $L$ on a projective manifold $X$, any singular positive metric on the line bundle $L|_{V}$ along a subvariety $V \subset X$ can be extended to a global singular positive metric on $L$. In this paper, we prove that the extendability of singular positive metrics on a line bundle along a subvariety implies the ampleness of the line bundle.
In this paper, we prove several theorems on systems of polynomials with at least one positive real zero based on the theory of conceive polynomials. These theorems provide sufficient conditions for systems of multivariate polynomials admitting at least one positive real zero in terms of their Newton polytopes and combinatorial structure. Moreover, a class of polynomials attaining their global minimums in the first quadrant are given, which is useful in polynomial optimization.
Let f be a polynomial in two complex variables. We say that f is nearly irreducible if any two nonconstant polynomial factors of f have a common zero. In the paper we give a criterion of nearly irreducibility for a given polynomial f in terms of its Newton diagram.
A relaxation method based on border basis reduction which improves the efficiency of Lasserre's approach is proposed to compute the optimum of a polynomial function on a basic closed semi algebraic set. A new stopping criterion is given to detect when the relaxation sequence reaches the minimum, using a sparse flat extension criterion. We also provide a new algorithm to reconstruct a finite sum of weighted Dirac measures from a truncated sequence of moments, which can be applied to other sparse reconstruction problems. As an application, we obtain a new algorithm to compute zero-dimensional mi…
We give a general criterion for two toric varieties to appear as fibers in a flat family over the projective line. We apply this to show that certain birational transformations mapping a Laurent polynomial to another Laurent polynomial correspond to deformations between the associated toric varieties.
A bad point of a positive semidefinite real polynomial f is a point at which a pole appears in all expressions of f as a sum of squares of rational functions. We show that quartic polynomials in three variables never have bad points. We give examples of positive semidefinite polynomials with a bad point at the origin, that are nevertheless sums of squares of formal power series, answering a question of Brumfiel. We also give an example of a positive semidefinite polynomial in three variables with a complex bad point that is not real, answering a question of Scheiderer.
In this paper we give a matrix version of Handelman's Positivstellensatz [1], representing polynomial matrices which are positive definite on convex, compact polyhedra. Moreover, we propose also a procedure to find such a representation. As a corollary of Handelman's theorem, we give a special case of Schmüdgen's Positivstellensatz for polynomial matrices positive definite on convex, compact polyhedra.
We compare each coefficient of the reduced characteristic polynomial of a simple arrangement and that of its Ziegler restriction. As a consequence we can show that the former is not less than the latter in the category of tame arrangements. This is a generalization of Yoshinaga's freeness criterion for 3-arrangements and also the recent result by the author and Yoshinaga. As a corollary, we can prove that a free arrangement is a minimal chamber arrangement, and we can give a freeness criterion in terms of chambers in the category of tame arrangements.
The paper is a sequel to the paper "Application of localization to the multivariate moment problem" by the same author. A new criterion is presented for a positive semidefinite linear functional on the real polynomial algebra to correspond to a positive Borel measure on real n-space. The criterion is stronger than Nussbaum's criterion and is similar in nature to a criterion of Schmudgen. It is also explained how the criterion allows one to understand the support of the associated measure in terms of the non-negativity of the linear functional on a quadratic module of the real polynomial algebr…
We present a new positive lower bound for the minimum value taken by a polynomial P with integer coefficients in k variables over the standard simplex of R^k, assuming that P is positive on the simplex. This bound depends only on the number of variables, the degree and the bitsize of the coefficients of P and improves all previous bounds for arbitrary polynomials which are positive over the simplex.
In 1888, Hilbert described how to find real polynomials in more than one variable which take only non-negative values but are not a sum of squares of polynomials. His construction was so restrictive that no explicit examples appeared until the late 1960s. We revisit and generalize Hilbert's construction and present many such polynomials.
The aim of this note is to give an effective criterion to verify whether a cubic polynomial over a non-Archimedean field has a weak Néron model or not.
We study the boundary of the nonnegative trigonometric polynomials from the algebraic point of view. In particularly, we show that it is a subset of an irreducible algebraic hypersurface and established its explicit form in terms of resultants.
We give a criterion which characterizes a real multi-variate Laurent polynomial with full-dimensional smooth Newton polytope to have the property that all sufficiently large powers of the polynomial have fully positive coefficients. Here a Laurent polynomial is said to have fully positive coefficients if the coefficients of its monomial terms indexed by the lattice points of its Newton polytope are all positive. Our result generalizes an earlier result of the authors, which corresponds to the special case when the Newton polytope of the Laurent polynomial is a translate of a standard simplex. …
