We derive explicit formulas for the Arakelov-Green function and the Faltings delta-invariant of a Riemann surface. A numerical example illustrates how these formulas can be used to calculate Arakelov invariants of curves.
The purpose of this paper is to initiate Arakelov theory in a noncommutative setting. More precisely, we are concerned with noncommutative arithmetic surfaces. We introduce a version of arithmetic intersection theory on noncommutative arithmetic surfaces and we prove an arithmetic Riemann-Roch theorem in this setup.
We present an Arakelov theoretic version of the deformation to the normal cone. In particular, the geometric data is enriched with a deformation of a Hermitian line bundle. We introduce numerical invariants called arithmetic Hilbert invariants and prove the conservation of these invariants along the deformation. In a following article, this conservation of number theorem will allow a demonstration of the arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel theorem.
We give explicit formulas for the Kawazumi-Zhang invariant and Faltings delta-invariant of a compact and connected Riemann surface of genus three. The formulas are in terms of two integrals over the associated jacobian, one integral involving the standard Riemann theta function, and another involving a theta function particular to genus three that was discovered by Frobenius. We review part of Frobenius' work on his theta function and connect our results with a formula due to Bloch, Hain and Bost describing the archimedean height pairing of Ceresa cycles in genus three.
We explicitly bound the Faltings height of a curve over Q polynomially in its Belyi degree. Similar bounds are proven for three other Arakelov invariants: the discriminant, Faltings' delta invariant and the self-intersection of the dualizing sheaf. Our results allow us to explicitly bound Arakelov invariants of modular curves, Hurwitz curves and Fermat curves in terms of their genus. Moreover, as an application, we show that the Couveignes-Edixhoven-Bruin algorithm to compute coefficients of modular forms for congruence subgroups of SL2(Z) runs in polynomial time under the Riemann hypothesis f…
This note contains an elementary discussion of the Arakelov intersection theory of elliptic curves. The main new results are a projection formula for elliptic arithmetic surfaces and a formula for the "energy" of an isogeny between Riemann surfaces of genus 1. The latter formula provides an answer to a question originally posed by Szpiro.
We introduce the p-adic analogue of Arakelov intersection theory on arithmetic surfaces. The intersection pairing in an extension of the p-adic height pairing for divisors of degree 0 in the form described by Coleman and Gross. It also uses Coleman integration and is related to work of Colmez on p-adic Green functions. We introduce the p-adic version of a metrized line bundle and define the metric on the determinant of its cohomology in the style of Faltings. It is possible to prove in this theory analogues of the Adjunction formula and the Riemann-Roch formula.
This paper introduces a new cohomology theory for schemes of finite type over an arithmetic ring. The main motivation for this Arakelov-theoretic version of motivic cohomology is the conjecture on special values of $L$-functions and zeta functions formulated by the second author. Taking advantage of the six functors formalism in motivic stable homotopy theory, we establish a number of formal properties, including pullbacks for arbitrary morphisms, pushforwards for projective morphisms between regular schemes, localization sequences, $h$-descent. We round off the picture with a purity result an…
The function $h^0$ for a number field is analogous to the dimension of the Riemann-Roch spaces at divisors on an algebraic curve. We provide a method to compute this function for number fields with unit group of rank at most 2, even with large discriminant. This method is based on using LLL-reduced bases, the "jump algorithm" and Poisson summation formula.
Given a choice of metric on the Riemann surface, the regularized determinant of Laplacian (analytic torsion) is defined via the complex power of elliptic operators: $$ \det(Δ)=\exp(-ζ'(0)) $$ In this paper we gave an asymptotic effective estimate of analytic torsion under Arakelov metric. In particular, after taking the logarithm it is asymptotically upper bounded by $g$ for $g>1$. The construction of a cohomology theory for arithmetic surfaces in Arakelov theory has long been an open problem. In particular, it is not known if $h^{1}(X,L)\ge 0$. We view this as an indirect piece of evidence th…
In this paper, we extend Deligne's functorial Riemann-Roch isomorphism for hermitian holomorphic line bundles on Riemann surfaces to the case of flat, not necessarily unitary connections. The Quillen metric and star-product of Gillet-Soule are replaced with complex valued logarithms. On the determinant of cohomology side, the idea goes back to Fay's holomorphic extension of determinants of Dolbeault laplacians, and it is shown here to be equivalent to the holomorphic Cappell-Miller torsion. On the Deligne pairing side, the logarithm is a refinement of the intersection connections considered in…
In the context of arithmetic surfaces, Bost defined a generalized Arithmetic Chow Group (ACG) using the Sobolev space L^2_1. We study the behavior of these groups under pull-back and push-forward and we prove a projection formula. We use these results to define an action of the Hecke operators on the ACG of modular curves and to show that they are self-adjoint with respect to the arithmetic intersection product. The decomposition of the ACG in eigencomponents which follows allows us to define new numerical invariants, which are refined versions of the self-intersection of the dualizing sheaf. …
This memoir is devoted to the study of formal-analytic arithmetic surfaces. These are arithmetic counterparts, in the context of Arakelov geometry, of germs of smooth complex-analytic surfaces along a projective complex curve. Formal-analytic surfaces provide a natural framework for arithmetic algebraization theorems, old and new. Formal-analytic arithmetic surfaces admit a rich geometry which parallels the geometry of complex analytic surfaces. Notably the dichotomy between pseudoconvexity and pseudoconcavity plays a central role in their geometry. Our study of formal-analytic arithmetic surf…
In this paper we prove new explicit formulas for Faltings' $δ$-invariant of an arbitrary hyperelliptic Riemann surface. This has several applications: For example we obtain an explicit lower bound for $δ$ depending only on the genus, and we deduce new explicit bounds for the Arakelov self-intersection number $ω^2$ associated to hyperelliptic curves over number fields. Furthermore, we obtain an improved version of Szpiro's small points conjecture for hyperelliptic curves of genus at least $3$. Our method allows us in addition to establish a generalization of Rosenhain's formula on $θ$-derivativ…
We introduce the positive intersection product in Arakelov geometry and prove that the arithmetic volume function is continuously differentiable. As applications, we compute the distribution function of the asymptotic measure of a Hermitian line bundle and several other arithmetic invariants.
In this paper we give new explicit formulas for Faltings' $δ$-invariant in terms of integrals of theta functions, and we deduce an explicit lower bound for $δ$ only in terms of the genus and an explicit upper bound for the Arakelov-Green function in terms of $δ$. Furthermore, we give a canonical extension of $δ$ and the Zhang-Kawazumi invariant $φ$ to the moduli space of indecomposable principally polarised complex abelian varieties.
The function $h^0$ for a number field is an analogue of the dimension of the Riemann-Roch spaces of divisors on an algebraic curve. In this paper, we prove the conjecture of van der Geer and Schoof about the maximality of $h^0$ at the trivial Arakelov divisor for quadratic extensions of complex quadratic fields.
In this paper we study the degeneration behavior of the norm of the Riemann $θ$-function in a family of principally polarized abelian varieties over the punctured complex unit disc in terms of the associated polarized real torus. As an application, we obtain the degeneration behavior of the Zhang--Kawazumi invariant $φ(M_t)$ of a family of Riemann surfaces $M_t$ in terms of Zhang's invariant $φ(Γ)$ of the associated metrized reduction graph $Γ$. This allows us to deduce a uniform lower bound for the essential minimum of the Néron-Tate height on the tautological cycles of any Jacobian variety o…
Zeta functions for linear codes were defined by Iwan Duursma in 1999. They were generalized to the case of some invariant polynomials by the preset author. One of the most important problems is whether extremal weight enumerators satisfy the Riemann hypothesis. In this article, we show there exist extremal polynomials of the weight enumerator type which are invariant under the MacWilliams transform and do not satisfy the Riemann hypothesis.
This paper studies a zeta function of two complex variables (w, s) attached to an algebraic number field K, introduced by van der Geer and Schoof, which is based on an analogue of the Riemann-Roch theorem for number fields using Arakelov divisors. We mainly consider the case of the rational field Q, where for w = 1 one recovers the Riemann zeta function with the factors at infinity added. The analogue of the Riemann xi-function analytically continues to an entire function of two complex variables, and satisfies a functional equation holding w fixed and sending s to w-s. For real w the "critica…
In 1999, Iwan Duursma defined the zeta function for a linear code as a generating function of its Hamming weight enumerator. It can also be defined for other homogeneous polynomials not corresponding to existing codes. If the homogeneous polynomial is invariant under the MacWilliams transform, then its zeta function satisfies a functional equation and we can formulate an analogue of the Riemann hypothesis. As far as existing codes are concerned, the Riemann hypothesis is believed to be closely related to the extremal property. In this article, we show there are abundant polynomials invariant b…
The concept and the construction of modular graph functions are generalized from genus-one to higher genus surfaces. The integrand of the four-graviton superstring amplitude at genus-two provides a generating function for a special class of such functions. A general method is developed for analyzing the behavior of modular graph functions under non-separating degenerations in terms of a natural real parameter $t$. For arbitrary genus, the Arakelov Green function and the Kawazumi-Zhang invariant degenerate to a Laurent polynomial in $t$ of degree $(1,1)$ in the limit $t\to\infty$. For genus two…
