In a 1992 paper, Witten gave a formula for the intersection pairings of the moduli space of flat $G$-bundles over an oriented surface, possibly with markings. In this paper, we give a general proof of Witten's formula, for arbitrary compact, simple groups, and any markings for which the moduli space has at most orbifold singularities.
Kuranishi atlases were introduced by McDuff and Wehrheim to build a virtual fundamental class on moduli spaces of J-holomorphic curves and resolve some of the challenges in this field. This paper considers Gromov-Witten moduli spaces and shows they admit a smooth enough Kuranishi atlas to be able to define a Gromov-Witten virtual fundamental class in any virtual dimension. The key step for this result is the proof of a stronger gluing theorem.
We show that moduli spaces of transversely cut-out (perturbed) pseudo-holomorphic curves in an almost complex manifold carry canonical relative smooth structures ("relative to the moduli space of domain curves"). The main point is that these structures can be characterized by a universal property. The tools required are ordinary gluing analysis combined with some fundamental results from the polyfold theory of Hofer--Wysocki--Zehnder.
We characterize transversality, non-transversality properties on the moduli space of genus 0 stable maps to a rational projective surface. If a target space is equipped with a real structure, i.e, anti-holomorphic involution, then the results have real enumerative applications. Firstly, we can define a real version of Gromov-Witten invariants. Secondly, we can prove the invariance of Welschinger's invariant in algebraic geometric category.
We compute the Riemannian volume on the moduli space of flat connections on a nonorientable 2-manifold, for a natural class of metrics. We also show that Witten's volume formula for these moduli spaces may be derived using Haar measure, and we give a new proof of Witten's volume formula for the moduli space of flat connections on an orientable surface using Haar measure.
Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective algebraic variety. Given a line bundle $\mathcal{L}$ over $X$ and an integer $r>1$ one defines the stack $\sqrt[r]{\mathcal{L}/X}$ of $r$-th roots of $\mathcal{L}$. Motivated by Gromov-Witten theoretic questions, in this paper we analyze the structure of moduli stacks of genus $0$ twisted stable maps to $\sqrt[r]{\mathcal{L}/X}$. Our main results are explicit constructions of moduli stacks of genus $0$ twisted stable maps to $\sqrt[r]{\mathcal{L}/X}$ starting from moduli stack of genus $0$ stable maps to $X$. As a consequence, we prove an exact formula ex…
This paper constructs and studies the Gromov-Witten invariants and their properties for noncompact geometrically bounded symplectic manifolds. Two localization formulas for GW-invariants are also proposed and proved. As applications we get solutions of the generalized string equation and dilation equation and their variants. The more solutions of WDVV equation and quantum products on cohomology groups are also obtained for the symplectic manifolds with finitely dimensional cohomology groups. To realize these purposes we further develop the language introduced by Liu-Tian to describe the virtua…
In a previous paper we described a natural closed subset of the moduli space of stable genus-one J-holomorphic maps into a symplectic manifold X. In this paper we generalize the definition of the main component to moduli spaces of perturbed, in a restricted way, J-holomorphic maps. This generalization implies that the main component, just like the entire moduli space, carries a virtual fundamental class and can be used to define symplectic invariants. These truly genus-one invariants constitute part of the standard genus-one Gromov-Witten invariants, which arise from the entire moduli space. T…
We construct virtual cycles on moduli spaces of perturbed gauged Witten equation over a fixed smooth r -spin curve, under the framework of [TX15]. Together with the wall-crossing formula proved in the companion paper [TX19], it completes the construction of the correlation function for the gauged linear sigma model announced in [TX16] as well as the proof of its invariance.
In general, a Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence establishes an isomorphism between a moduli space of stable algebraic geometric objects and a moduli space of solutions of a certain (generalized) Hermite-Einstein equation. We believe that, for a large class of moduli problems, this correspondence respects the virtual fundamental classes defined in the two categories. We prove this statement in an interesting case, namely the moduli problem associated with the symplectic factorization problem which yields the complete toric varieties. Therefore, our main objects are the moduli spaces of "twisted"…
In this paper we show that the dimensionally reduced Seiberg-Witten equations lead to a Higgs field and study the resulting moduli spaces. The moduli space arising out of a subset of the equations, shown to be non-empty for a compact Riemann surface of genus g >= 1, gives rise to a family of moduli spaces carrying a hyperkahler structure. For the full set of equations the corresponding moduli space does not have the aforementioned hyperkahler structure but has a natural symplectic structure. For the case of the torus, g=1, we show that the full set of equations has a solution, different from t…
In this paper we use the approach of Ruan and Li-Ruan to construct virtual neighborhoods and show that the Gromov-Witten invariants can be defined as an integral over top strata of virtual neighborhood. We prove that the invariants defined in this way satisfy all the Gromov-Witten axioms of Kontsevich and Manin.
Let $(X,ω)$ be a symplectic manifold, $J$ be an $ω$-tame almost complex structure, and $L$ be a Lagrangian submanifold. The stable compactification of the moduli space of parametrized $J$-holomorphic curves in $X$ with boundary in $L$ (with prescribed topological data) is compact and Hausdorff in Gromov's $C^\infty$-topology. We construct a Kuranishi structure with corners in the sense of Fukaya and Ono. This Kuranishi structure is orientable if $L$ is spin. In the special case where the expected dimension of the moduli space is zero, and there is an $S^1$ action on the pair $(X,L)$ which pres…
For a symplectic manifold with an anti-symplectic involution having non-empty fixed locus, we construct a model of the moduli space of real sphere maps out of moduli spaces of decorated disk maps and give an explicit expression for its first Stiefel-Whitney class. As a corollary, we obtain a large number of examples, which include all odd-dimensional projective spaces and many complete intersections, for which many types of real moduli spaces are orientable. For these manifolds, we define open Gromov-Witten invariants with no restriction on the dimension of the manifolds or the type of the con…
The orientability problem in real Gromov-Witten theory is one of the fundamental hurdles to enumerating real curves. In this paper, we describe topological conditions on the target manifold which ensure that the uncompactified moduli spaces of real maps are orientable for all genera of and for all types of involutions on the domain. In contrast to the typical approaches to this problem, we do not compute the signs of any diffeomorphisms, but instead compare them. Many projective complete intersections, including the renowned quintic threefold, satisfy our topological conditions. Our main resul…
This paper describes the structure of the moduli space of holomorphic curves and constructs Gromov Witten invariants in the category of exploded manifolds. This includes defining Gromov Witten invariants relative to normal crossing divisors and proving the associated gluing theorem which involves summing relative invariants over a count of tropical curves.
We lay the foundation for a version of $r$-spin theory in genus zero for Riemann surfaces with boundary. In particular, we define the notion of $r$-spin disks, their moduli space, and the Witten bundle, we show that the moduli space is a compact smooth orientable orbifold with corners, and we prove that the Witten bundle is canonically relatively oriented relative to the moduli space. In the sequel to this paper, we use these constructions to define open $r$-spin intersection theory and relate it to the Gelfand-Dickey hierarchy, thus providing an analogue of Witten's $r$-spin conjecture in the…
We establish a product formula for Gromov-Witten invariants for closed, connected, relatively semi-positive Hamiltonian fibrations over any symplectic base. Furthermore, we show that the fibration projection induces a locally trivial (orbi-)fibration map from the moduli space of pseudo-holomorphic maps with marked points in the total space of the Hamiltonian fibration to the corresponding moduli space of pseudo-holomorphic maps with marked points in the base. We use this induced map to recover the product formula by means of integration. Finally, we give applications to c-splitting and symplec…
This paper studies intersection theory on the compactified moduli space M(n,d) of holomorphic bundles of rank n and degree d over a fixed compact Riemann surface of genus g > 1 where n and d may have common factors. Because of the presence of singularities we work with the intersection cohomology groups defined by Goresky and MacPherson and the ordinary cohomology groups of a certain partial resolution of singularities of M(n,d). Based on our earlier work, we give a precise formula for the intersection cohomology pairing and provide a method to calculate pairings on the partial resolution of s…
This is a survey article for the mathematical theory of Witten's Gauged Linear Sigma Model, as developed recently by the authors. Instead of developing the theory in the most general setting, in this paper we focus on the description of the moduli.
In this expository manuscript, we review the construction of Gromov-Witten virtual fundamental class via FOOO's theory of Kuranishi structures for moduli spaces of pseudo-holomorphic maps defined on closed Riemann surfaces. We consider constraints coming from the ambient space and Deligne-Mumford moduli, called primary insertions, as well as intrinsic classes such as $ψ$-classes and Hodge classes.
We give an explicit formula for the holonomy of the orientation bundle of a family of real Cauchy-Riemann operators. A special case of this formula resolves the orientability question for spaces of maps from Riemann surfaces with Lagrangian boundary condition. As a corollary, we show that the local system of orientations on the moduli space of J-holomorphic maps from a bordered Riemann surface to a symplectic manifold is isomorphic to the pull-back of a local system defined on the product of the Lagrangian and its free loop space. As another corollary, we show that certain natural bundles over…
The first part of this work constructs positive-genus real Gromov-Witten invariants of real-orientable symplectic manifolds of odd "complex" dimensions; the present part focuses on their properties that are essential for actually working with these invariants. We determine the compatibility of the orientations on the moduli spaces of real maps constructed in the first part with the standard node-identifying immersion of Gromov-Witten theory. We also compare these orientations with alternative ways of orienting the moduli spaces of real maps that are available in special cases. In a sequel, we …
Let $(F,J,ω)$ be an almost Kähler manifold, $α$ a $J$-holomorphic action of a compact Lie group $\hat K$ on $F$, and $K$ a closed normal subgroup of $\hat K$ which leaves $ω$ invariant. We introduce gauge theoretical invariants for such triples $(F,α,K)$. The invariants are associated with moduli spaces of solutions of a certain vortex type equation on a Riemann surface. We give explicite descriptions of the moduli spaces associated with the triple $(\Hom(\C^r,\C^{r_0}), α_{\rm can},U(r))$, where $α_{\rm can}$ denotes the canonical action of $\hat K=U(r)\times U(r_0)$ on $\Hom(\C^r,\C^{r_0})$.…
In this paper we first show that on projective manifolds (M, ω), there are holomorphic determinant bundles (in the sense of Knusden-Mumford used by Bismut, Gillet, Soule) which play the role of the geometric quantum bundle, namely one for each input data of a Hermitian holomorphic line bundle L of non-trivial Chern class on a compact Kahler manifold Z (with Todd genus non-zero) and a choice of a geometric quantization of (M, ω). Next we further study the generalization of the vortex equations on Kahler 4-manifold which has been studied earlier by Bradlow. We show that when the Kahler 4-manifol…
We re-prove Gromov's non-squeezing theorem by applying Polyfold Theory to a simple Gromov-Witten moduli space. Thus we demonstrate how to utilize the work of Hofer-Wysocki-Zehnder to give proofs involving moduli spaces of pseudoholomorphic curves that are relatively short and broadly accessible, while also fully detailed and rigorous. We moreover review the polyfold description of Gromov-Witten moduli spaces in the relevant case of spheres with minimal energy and one marked point.
We describe generating functions for arbitrary-genus Gromov-Witten invariants of the projective space with any number of marked points explicitly. The structural portion of this description gives rise to uniform energy bounds and vanishing results for these invariants. They suggest deep conjectures relating Gromov-Witten invariants of symplectic manifolds to the energy of pseudo-holomorphic maps and the expected dimension of their moduli space.
As shown in a previous paper, certain naturally arising cones of holomorphic vector bundle sections over the main component $\ov\M_{1,k}^0(¶,d)$ of the moduli space of stable genus-one holomorphic maps into $¶$ have a well-defined euler class. In this paper, we extend this result to moduli spaces of perturbed, in a restricted way, $J$-holomorphic maps. We show that euler classes of such cones relate the reduced genus-one Gromov-Witten invariants of complete intersections to the corresponding GW-invariants of the ambient projective space. As a consequence, the standard genus-one GW-invariants o…
We prove a quantum version of the localization formula of Witten that relates invariants of a git quotient with the equivariant invariants of the action. Using the formula we prove a quantum version of an abelianization formula of S. Martin relating invariants of geometric invariant theory quotients by a group and its maximal torus, conjectured by Bertram, Ciocan-Fontanine, and Kim. By similar techniques we prove a quantum Lefschetz principle for holomorphic symplectic reductions. As an application, we give a formula for the fundamental solution to the quantum differential equation (qde) for t…
Gromov-Witten invariants of a symplectic manifold are a count of holomorphic curves. We describe a formula expressing the GW invariants of a symplectic sum $X# Y$ in terms of the relative GW invariants of $X$ and $Y$. This formula has several applications to enumerative geometry. As one application, we obtain new relations in the cohomology ring of the moduli space of complex structures on a genus g Riemann surface with n marked points.
Notes for a short lecture series, covering exploded manifolds, the moduli stack of curves in exploded manifolds, and a tropical gluing formula for Gromov-Witten invariants: a gluing formula providing a degeneration formula for Gromov-Witten invariants in normal-crossing degenerations. I gave the original lecture series in April 2016 at the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics at Stonybrook. Video of the lectures is available on the SCGP website, http://scgp.stonybrook.edu/video_portal/video.php?id=2595
We give two recursions for computing top intersections of tautological classes on blowups of moduli spaces of genus-one curves. One of these recursions is analogous to the well-known string equation. As shown in previous papers, these numbers are useful for computing genus-one enumerative invariants of projective spaces and Gromov-Witten invariants of complete intersections.
The moduli spaces of stable quasimaps unify various moduli appearing in the study of Gromov-Witten Theory. This note is a survey article on the moduli of stable quasimaps, based on joint papers with Ciocan-Fontanine and Maulik as well as the author's talk at Kinosaki Algebraic Geometry Symposium 2010.
This article is an expanded version of talks given by the authors in Oberwolfach, Bochum, and at the Fano Conference in Torino. Some new results (e. g. the material concerning flag varieties, Quot spaces over $¶^1$, and the generalized quiver representations) were included. The main goal is the construction of gauge theoretical Gromov-Witten type invariants of arbitrary genus associated with certain symplectic factorization problems with additional symmetry, and the computation of these invariants in terms of complex geometric objects. The main tool for describing moduli spaces associated with…
In this paper, we propose a definition of genus one real Gromov-Witten invariants for certain symplectic manifolds with real a structure, including Calabi-Yau threefolds, and use equivariant localization to calculate certain genus one real invariants of the projective space. For this definition, we combine three moduli spaces corresponding to three possible types of involutions on a symplectic torus, by gluing them along common boundaries, to get a moduli space without codimension-one boundary and then study orientation of the total space. Modulo a technical conjectural lemma, we can prove tha…
