On subsets E of the Mandelbrot set M, homeomorphisms are constructed by quasi-conformal surgery. When the dynamics of quadratic polynomials is changed piecewise by a combinatorial construction, a general theorem yields the corresponding homeomorphism h: E to E in the parameter plane. Each h has two fixed points in E, and a countable family of mutually homeomorphic fundamental domains. Possible generalizations to other families of polynomials or rational mappings are discussed. The homeomorphisms on subsets E of M constructed by surgery are extended to homeomorphisms of M, and employed to study groups of non-trivial homeomorphisms h: M to M . It is shown that these groups have the cardinality of the continuum, and they are not compact.
We prove that for every hyperbolic component of the Mandelbrot set, any two limbs with equal denominators are homeomorphic so that the homeomorphism preserves periods of hyperbolic components. This settles a conjecture on the Mandelbrot set that goes back to 1994.
Given $p/q$ and $p'/q$ both irreducible, we construct homeomorphisms between the $p/q$ and the $p'/q$ limbs of the Mandelbrot set. This homeomorphisms are not compatible with the dynamics. Moreover, the filled Julia sets of corresponding parameter values are also homeomorphic. All the homeomorphisms above have counterparts on the combinatorial level relating corresponding external arguments, in the dynamical planes as well as in the parameter spaces. Assuming local connectivity of $M$ we may conclude that the constructed homeomorphisms between limbs are compatible with the embeddings of the li…
In the paper 'On the dynamics of polynomial-like mappings' Douady and Hubbard introduced the notion of polynomial-like maps. They used it to identify homeomophic copies of the Mandelbrot set inside the Mandelbrot set. They conjectured that in case of primitive copies the homeomorphism between the homeomorphic copy of the Mandelbrot set and the Mandelbrot set is q.-c., and similarly in the satellite case, it is q.-c. off any small neighborhood of the root. These conjectures are now Theorems due to Lyubich. The satellite copies of the Mandelbrot set are clearly not q-c homeomorphic to the Mandel…
The combinatorial Mandelbrot set is a continuum in the plane, whose boundary can be defined, up to a homeomorphism, as the quotient space of the unit circle by an explicit equivalence relation. This equivalence relation was described by Douady and, in different terms, by Thurston. Thurston used quadratic invariant laminations as a major tool. As has been previously shown by the authors, the combinatorial Mandelbrot set can be interpreted as a quotient of the space of all limit quadratic invariant laminations. The topology in the space of laminations is defined by the Hausdorff distance. In thi…
We prove the decoration theorem for the Mandelbrot set (and Multibrot sets) which says that when a "little Mandelbrot set" is removed from the Mandelbrot set, then most of the resulting connected components have small diameters.
We construct a subset of the Mandelbrot set which is dense on the boundary of the Mandelbrot set and which consists of only infinitely renormalizable points such that the Mandelbrot set is locally connected at every point of this subset. We prove the local connectivity by finding bases of connected neighborhoods directly.
It is shown that the boundary of the Mandelbrot set $M$ has Hausdorff dimension two and that for a generic $c \in \bM$, the Julia set of $z \mapsto z^2+c$ also has Hausdorff dimension two. The proof is based on the study of the bifurcation of parabolic periodic points.
We straighten a result of [5] about arithmetic properties of the Laurent coefficients of the conformal isomorphism from the complement of the unit disk onto the complement of the Mandelbrot set. This confirms an empirical observation by Don Zagier, see [1]
We describe an interesting interplay between symbolic dynamics, the structure of the Mandelbrot set, permutations of periodic points achieved by analytic continuation, and Galois groups of certain polynomials. Internal addresses are a convenient and efficient way of describing the combinatorial structure of the Mandelbrot set, and of giving geometric meaning to the ubiquitous kneading sequences in human-readable form (Sections 3 and 4). A simple extension, \emph{angled internal addresses}, distinguishes combinatorial classes of the Mandelbrot set and in particular distinguishes hyperbolic comp…
Let $f(z) = z^2 + c$ be a quadratic polynomial, with c in the Mandelbrot set. Assume further that both fixed points of f are repelling, and that f is not renormalizable. Then we prove that the Julia set J of f is holomorphically removable in the sense that every homeomorphism of the complex plane to itself that is conformal off of J is in fact conformal on the entire complex plane. As a corollary, we deduce that the Mandelbrot Set is locally connected at such c.
Mandelbrot set arose from the pioneering work of French mathematician Gaston Julia in the field of complex dynamics at the beginning of the 20th century. French-American mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot used computers to calculate iterations of complex polynomials of second order and displayed intricate images of fractal geometry. While studying fundamental properties of the Mandelbrot set, little attention has been paid to study the relationship between the degree of the generating polynomials and the shape of the main body of the Mandelbrot set. This paper extends the work from generating pol…
Let c be a real parameter in the Mandelbrot set, and f_c(z):= z^2 + c. We prove a formula relating the topological entropy of f_c to the Hausdorff dimension of the set of rays landing on the real Julia set, and to the Hausdorff dimension of the set of rays landing on the real section of the Mandelbrot set, to the right of the given parameter c. We then generalize the result by looking at the entropy of Hubbard trees: namely, we relate the Hausdorff dimension of the set of external angles which land on a certain slice of a principal vein in the Mandelbrot set to the topological entropy of the q…
We show the existence of computable complex numbers $λ$ for which the bifurcation locus of the one parameter complex family $f_{b}(z) = λz + b z^{2} + z^{3}$ is not Turing computable.
We will show the Mandelbrot set $M$ is locally conformally inhomogeneous: the only conformal map $f$ defined in an open set $U$ intersecting $\partial M$ and satisfying $f(U\cap\partial M)\subset \partial M$ is the identity map. The proof uses the study of local conformal symmetries of the Julia sets of polynomials: we will show in many cases, the dynamics can be recovered from the local conformal structure of the Julia sets.
We give a new proof that all external rays of the Mandelbrot set at rational angles land, and of the relation between the external angle of such a ray and the dynamics at the landing point. Our proof is different from the original one, given by Douady and Hubbard and refined by Lavaurs, in several ways: it replaces analytic arguments by combinatorial ones; it does not use complex analytic dependence of the polynomials with respect to parameters and can thus be made to apply for non-complex analytic parameter spaces; this proof is also technically simpler. Finally, we derive several corollaries…
In the 1980s Branner and Douady discovered a surgery relating various limbs of the Mandelbrot set. We put this surgery in the framework of "Pacman Renormalization Theory" that combines features of quadratic-like and Siegel renormalizations. We show that Siegel renormalization periodic points (constructed by McMullen in the 1990s) can be promoted to pacman renormalization periodic points. Then we prove that these periodic points are hyperbolic with one-dimensional unstable manifold. As a consequence, we obtain the scaling laws for the centers of satellite components of the Mandelbrot set near t…
New insights into the combinatorial structure of the Mandelbrot set are given by `Correspondence' and `Translation' Principles both conjectured and partially proved by E. Lau and D. Schleicher. We provide complete proofs of these principles and discuss results related to them. Note: The `Translation' and `Correspondence' Principles given earlier turned out to be false in the general case. In April 1999, an errata was added to discuss which parts of the two statements are incorrect and which parts remain true.
We give a framework to study the connectedness of the set of zeros of power series with coefficients in a finite subset $G\subset \mathbb{C}$. We prove that the set of zeros in the unit disk is connected and locally connected if some graph on the set $G$ of coefficients is connected. Furthermore, we apply this result to the study of the Mandelbrot set $\mathcal{M}_n$ for fractal $n$-gons. We prove that $\mathcal{M}_n$ is connected and locally connected for any $n$.
We explore geometric properties of the Mandelbrot set M, and the corresponding Julia sets J_c, near the main cardioid. Namely, we establish that: a) M is locally connected at certain infinitely renormalizable parameters c of bounded satellite type, providing first examples of this kind; b) The Julia sets J_c are also locally connected and have positive area; c) M is self-similar near Siegel parameters of constant type. We approach these problems by analyzing the unstable manifold of the pacman renormalization operator constructed in [DLS] as a global transcendental family.
Recently, Noytaptim and Petsche proved that the only totally real parameters $c\in \overline{\mathbb Q}$ for which $f_c(z):=z^2+c$ is postcritically finite are $0$, $-1$ and $-2$. In this note, we show that the only totally real parameters $c\in \overline{\mathbb Q}$ for which $f_c$ has a parabolic cycle are $\frac14$, $-\frac34$, $-\frac54$ and $-\frac74$.
In this paper, we prove that any parameter ray at a non-recurrent angle $θ$ lands at a non-recurrent parameter $c$ with $θ$ a characteristic angle of $f_c$; and conversely, every non-recurrent parameter $c$ is the landing point of one or two parameter rays at non-recurrent angles, and these angles are exactly the characteristic angles of $f_c$.
Due to its fractal nature, much about the area of the Mandelbrot set $M$ remains to be understood. While a series formula has been derived by Ewing and Schober to calculate the area of $M$ by considering its complement inside the Riemann sphere, to date the exact value of this area remains unknown. This paper presents new improved upper bounds for the area based on a parallel computing algorithm and for the 2-adic valuation of the series coefficients in terms of the sum-of-digits function.
We give new proofs that the Mandelbrot set is locally connected at every Misiurewicz point and at every point on the boundary of a hyperbolic component. The idea is to show ``shrinking of puzzle pieces'' without using specific puzzles. Instead, we introduce fibers of the Mandelbrot set and show that fibers of certain points are ``trivial'', i.e., they consist of single points. This implies local connectivity at these points. Locally, triviality of fibers is strictly stronger than local connectivity. Local connectivity proofs in holomorphic dynamics often actually yield that fibers are trivial,…
This article focuses on the dynamics of the different tridimensional principal slices of the multicomplex Multibrot sets. First, we define an equivalence relation between those slices. Then, we characterize them in order to establish similarities between their behaviors. Finally, we see that any multicomplex tridimensional principal slice is equivalent to a tricomplex slice up to an affine transformation. This implies that, in the context of tridimensional principal slices, Multibrot sets do not need to be generalized beyond the tricomplex space.
This paper focuses on the dynamics of the eight tridimensional principal slices of the tricomplex Mandelbrot set: the Tetrabrot, the Arrowheadbrot, the Mousebrot, the Turtlebrot, the Hourglassbrot, the Metabrot, the Airbrot (octahedron) and the Firebrot (tetrahedron). In particular, we establish a geometrical classification of these 3D slices using the properties of some specific sets that correspond to projections of the bicomplex Mandelbrot set on various two-dimensional vector subspaces, and we prove that the Firebrot is a regular tetrahedron. Finally, we construct the so-called "Stella oct…
We interpret the combinatorial Mandelbrot set in terms of \it{quadratic laminations} (equivalence relations $\sim$ on the unit circle invariant under $σ_2$). To each lamination we associate a particular {\em geolamination} (the collection $\mathcal{L}_\sim$ of points of the circle and edges of convex hulls of $\sim$-equivalence classes) so that the closure of the set of all of them is a compact metric space with the Hausdorff metric. Two such geolaminations are said to be {\em minor equivalent} if their {\em minors} (images of their longest chords) intersect. We show that the corresponding quo…
Hyperbolic numbers are a variation of complex numbers, but their dynamics is quite different. The hyperbolic Mandelbrot set for quadratic functions over hyperbolic numbers is simply a filled square, and the filled Julia set for hyperbolic parameters inside the hyperbolic Mandelbrot set is a filled rectangle. For hyperbolic parameters outside the hyperbolic Mandelbrot set, the filled Julia set has 3 possible topological descriptions, if it is not empty, in contrast to the complex case where it is always a non-empty totally disconnected set. These results were proved in [1,2,4,5,6,7] and are rev…
A key point in Douady and Hubbard's study of the Mandelbrot set $M$ is the theorem that every parabolic point $c\ne 1/4$ in $M$ is the landing point for exactly two external rays with angle which are periodic under doubling. This note will try to provide a proof of this result and some of its consequences which relies as much as possible on elementary combinatorics, rather than on more difficult analysis. It was inspired by section 2 of the recent thesis of Schleicher (see also Stony Brook IMS preprint 1994/19, with E. Lau), which contains very substantial simplifications of the Douady-Hubbard…
We consider the "Mandelbrot set" $M$ for pairs of complex linear maps, introduced by Barnsley and Harrington in 1985 and studied by Bousch, Bandt and others. It is defined as the set of parameters $λ$ in the unit disk such that the attractor $A_λ$ of the IFS $\{λz-1, λz+1\}$ is connected. We show that a non-trivial portion of $M$ near the imaginary axis is contained in the closure of its interior (it is conjectured that all non-real points of $M$ are in the closure of the set of interior points of $M$). Next we turn to the attractors $A_λ$ themselves and to natural measures $ν_λ$ supported on …
Carrots for dessert is the title of a section of the paper `On polynomial-like mappings' by Douady and Hubbard. In that section the authors define a notion of dyadic carrot fields of the Mandelbrot set M and more generally for Mandelbrot like families. They remark that such carrots are small when the dyadic denominator is large, but they do not even try to prove a precise such statement. In this paper we formulate and prove a precise statement of asymptotic shrinking of dyadic Carrot-fields around M. The same proof carries readily over to show that the dyadic decorations of copies M' of the Ma…
By means of a graphical journey across the Mandelbrot set for the classic quadratic iterator $f(z):z^2+q$, we illustrate how connectivity breaks as the seed $z_0$ is no longer at the critical point of $f(z)$. Finally we suggest an attack to the MLC conjecture.
This paper investigates the set of angles of the parameter rays which land on the real slice $[-2,1/4]$ of the Mandelbrot set. We prove that this set has zero length but Hausdorff dimension 1. We obtain the corresponding results for the tuned images of the real slice. Applications of these estimates in the study of critically non-recurrent real quadratics as well as biaccessible points of quadratic Julia sets are given.
Working within the polynomial quadratic family, we introduce a new point of view on bifurcations which naturally allows to see the seat of bifurcations as the projection of a Julia set of a complex dynamical system in dimension three. We expect our approach to be extendable to other holomorphic families of dynamical systems.
We present a simple proof of Tan's theorem on asymptotic similarity between the Mandelbrot set and Julia sets at Misiurewicz parameters. Then we give a new perspective on this phenomenon in terms of Zalcman functions, that is, entire functions generated by applying Zalcman's lemma to complex dynamics. We also show asymptotic similarity between the tricorn and Julia sets at Misiurewicz parameters, which is an antiholomorphic counterpart of Tan's theorem.
We investigate the arithmetic properties of the coefficients for the normalized conformal mapping of the exterior of the Multibrot set. In this paper, an estimate of the prime factor of the denominator of these coefficients is given. Bielefeld, Fisher and Haeseler presented Zagier's observation for the growth of denominator of the coefficients for the Mandelbrot set and Yamashita verified it in his master thesis. Our study takes into consideration both Zagier's observation and Yamashita's estimate.
The so-called "pinched disk" model of the Mandelbrot set is due to A.~Douady, J.~H.~Hubbard and W.~P.~Thurston. It can be described in the language of geodesic laminations. The combinatorial model is the quotient space of the unit disk under an equivalence relation that, loosely speaking, "pinches" the disk in the plane (whence the name of the model). The significance of the model lies in particular in the fact that this quotient is planar and therefore can be easily visualized. The conjecture that the Mandelbrot set is actually homeomorphic to this model is equivalent to the celebrated MLC co…
We study porosities in the Mandelbrot percolation process. We show that, almost surely at almost all points with respect to the natural measure, the mean porosities of the set and the natural measure exist and are equal to each other for all parameter values outside of a countable exceptional set. As a corollary, we obtain that, almost surely at almost all points, the lower porosities of the set and the natural measure are equal to zero, whereas the upper porosities obtain their maximum values.
Mandelbrot multiplicative cascades provide a construction of a dynamical system on a set of probability measures defined by inequalities on moments. To be more specific, beyond the first iteration, the trajectories take values in the set of fixed points of smoothing transformations (i.e., some generalized stable laws). Studying this system leads to a central limit theorem and to its functional version. The limit Gaussian process can also be obtained as limit of an `additive cascade' of independent normal variables.
We prove that given any $θ_1,\ldots,θ_{2d-2}\in \R\setminus\Z$, the support of the bifurcation measure of the moduli space of degree $d$ rational maps coincides with the closure of classes of maps having $2d-2$ neutral cycles of respective multipliers $e^{2iπθ_1},\ldots,e^{2iπθ_{2d-2}}$. To this end, we generalize a famous result of McMullen, proving that homeomorphic copies of $(\partial \Mand)^{k}$ are dense in the support of the $k^{th}$-bifurcation current $T^k_\bif$ in general families of rational maps, where $\Mand$ is the Mandelbrot set. As a consequence, we also get sharp dimension est…
A model for the Mandelbrot set is due to Thurston and is stated in the language of geodesic laminations. The conjecture that the Mandelbrot set is actually homeomorphic to this model is equivalent to the celebrated MLC conjecture stating that the Mandelbrot set is locally connected. For parameter spaces of higher degree polynomials, even conjectural models are missing, one possible reason being that the higher degree analog of the MLC conjecture is known to be false. We provide a combinatorial model for an essential part of the parameter space of complex cubic polynomials, namely, for the spac…
