We consider maps into Riemannian manifolds of non-positive curvature and start developing a systematic PDE theory. We control the Sobolev $H^{2,2}$-norm of such a map in terms of its energy, the $L^2$-norm of its tension field and a topological term depending on the homotopy class. We also solve a Dirchlet problem without an underlying variational structure, as an extension of the topic of harmonic maps with potentials.
Let $A \subset \mathbb{R} ^2 $ be a smooth doubly connected domain. We consider the Dirichlet energy $E(u)=\int_{A} |\nabla u|^2$, where $u:A \rightarrow \mathbb{C}$, and look for critical points of this energy with prescribed modulus $|u|=1$ on $\partial A$ and with prescribed degrees on the two connected components of $\partial A$. This variational problem is a problem with lack of compactness hence we can not use the direct methods of calculus of variations. Our analysis relies on the so-called Hopf differential and on a strong link between this problem and the problem of finding all minima…
We prove the removal singularity results for maps with bounded energy from the unit disk $B$ of $R^2$ centered at the origin to a closed Riemannian manifold whose tension field is unbounded in $L^2(B)$ but satisfies the following condition: {eqnarray*} (\int_{B_t\setminus B_{\frac{t}{2}}}|τ(u)|^2)^1/2\leq C_1(\frac{1}{t})^a, {eqnarray*} for some $0<a<1$ and for any $0<t<1$, where $C_1$ is a constant independent of $t$. We will also prove that if a sequence $\{u_n\}$ has uniformly bounded energy and satisfies {eqnarray*} (\int_{B_t\setminus B_{\frac{t}{2}}}|τ(u_n)|^2)^1/2\leq C_2(\frac{1}{t})^a…
Let $M$ be a closed Riemannian surface and $u_n$ a sequence of maps from $M$ to Riemannian manifold $N$ satisfying $$\sup_n(\|\nabla u_n\|_{L^2(M)}+\|τ(u_n)\|_{L^p(M)})\leq Λ$$ for some $p>1$, where $τ(u_n)$ is the tension field of the mapping $u_n$. For the general target manifold $N$, if $p\geq \frac 65$, we prove the energy identity and neckless during blowing up.
For the class of approximate harmonic maps $u\in W^{1,2}(Σ,N)$ from a closed Riemmanian surface $(Σ,g)$ to a compact Riemannian manifold $(N, h)$, we show that (i) the so-called energy identity holds for weakly convergent approximate harmonic maps $\{u_n\}:Σ\to N$, with tension fields $τ(u_n)$ bounded in the Morrey space $M^{1,δ}(Σ)$ for some $0\leδ<2$; and (ii) if an approximate harmonic map $u$ has tension field $τ(u)\in L\log L(Σ)\cap M^{1,δ}(Σ)$ for some $0\leδ<2$, then $u\in W^{2,1}(Σ, N)$. Based on these estimates, we further establish the bubble tree convergence, referring to energy ide…
We prove a sharp criterion on the decay of the tension of almost harmonic maps from degenerating surfaces that ensures that such maps subconverge to a limiting object that is made up entirely of harmonic maps.
Let $u_n$ be a sequence of mappings from a closed Riemannian surface $M$ to a general Riemannian manifold $N$. If $u_n$ satisfies \beno \sup_{n}\big(\|\nabla u_n\|_{L^2(M)}+\|τ(u_n)\|_{L^{p}(M)}\big)\leq Λ\quad \text{for some}\,\,p>1, \eeno where $τ(u_n)$ is the tension field of $u_n$, then there hold the so called energy identity and neckless property during blowing up. This result is sharp by Parker's example, where the tension fields of the mappings from Riemannian surface are bounded in $L^1(M)$ but the energy identity fails.
Let M and N be closed n-dimensional manifolds, and equip N with a volume form σ. Let μbe an exact n-form on M. Arnold then asked the question: When can one find a map f:;N such that f*σ=μ. In 1973 Eliashberg and Gromov showed that this problem is, in a deep sense, trivial: It satisfies an h-principle, and whenever one can find a bundle map f_bdl:T M to T N which is degree 0 on the base and induces μone can homotop this map to a solution f. That is if the naive topological conditions are satisfied on can find a solution. There is no further interesting geometry in the problem. We show the corre…
We consider in dimension four weakly convergent sequences of approximate biharmonic maps to a Riemannian manifold with bi-tension fields bounded in $L^p$ for $p>\frac43$. We prove an energy identity that accounts for the loss of hessian energies by the sum of hessian energies over finitely many nontrivial biharmonic maps on $\mathbb R^4$. As a corollary, we obtain an energy identity for the heat flow of biharmonic maps at time infinity.
The geometric Cauchy problem for a class of surfaces in a pseudo-Riemannian manifold of dimension 3 is to find the surface which contains a given curve with a prescribed tangent bundle along the curve. We consider this problem for constant negative Gauss curvature surfaces (pseudospherical surfaces) in Euclidean 3-space, and for timelike constant non-zero mean curvature (CMC) surfaces in the Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space. We prove that there is a unique solution if the prescribed curve is non-characteristic, and for characteristic initial curves (asymptotic curves for pseudospherical surfaces and …
We prove a Liouville-type theorem for biharmonic maps from a complete Riemannian manifold of dimension \(n\) that has a lower bound on its Ricci curvature and positive injectivity radius into a Riemannian manifold whose sectional curvature is bounded from above. Under these geometric assumptions we show that if the $L^p$-norm of the tension field is bounded and the $n$-energy of the map is sufficiently small then every biharmonic map must be harmonic, where \(2<p<n\).
The purpose of this paper is to study the harmonicity of maps to or from para-Sasakian manifolds. We derive the condition for the tension field of paraholomorphic map between almost para-Hermitian manifold and para-Sasakian manifold. The necessary and sufficient condition for a paraholomorphic map between para-Sasakian manifolds to be parapluriharmonic are shown and a non-trivial example is presented for its illustrations.
We consider maps between Riemannian manifolds in which the map is a stationary point of the nonlinear Hodge energy. The variational equations of this functional form a quasilinear, nondiagonal, nonuniformly elliptic system which models certain kinds of compressible flow. Conditions are found under which singular sets of prescribed dimension cannot occur. Various degrees of smoothness are proven for the sonic limit, high-dimensional flow, and flow having nonzero vorticity. The gradient flow of solutions is estimated. Implications for other quasilinear field theories are suggested.
We consider biharmonic maps $ϕ:(M,g)\rightarrow (N,h)$ from a complete Riemannian manifold into a Riemannian manifold with non-positive sectional curvature. Assume that $α$ satisfies $1<α<\infty$. If for such an $α$, $\int_M|τ(ϕ)|^αdv_g<\infty$ and $\int_M|dϕ|^2dv_g<\infty,$ where $τ(ϕ)$ is the tension field of $ϕ$, then we show that $ϕ$ is harmonic. For a biharmonic submanifold, we obtain that the above assumption $\int_M|dϕ|^2dv_g<\infty$ is not necessary. These results give affirmative partial answers to the global version of generalized Chen's conjecture.
Let $u: (M, g)\to (N, h)$ be a map between Riemannian manifolds $(M, g)$ and $(N, h)$. The $p$-bienergy of $u$ is defined by $E_p(u)=\int_M|τ(u)|^pdν_g$, where $τ(u)$ is the tension field of $u$ and $p>1$. Critical points of $E_p(\cdot)$ are called $p$-biharmonic maps. In this paper we will prove nonexistence result of proper $p$-biharmonic maps when $p\geq2$. In particular when $M=\mathbb{R}^m$, we get Liouville type results under proper integral conditions , which extend the related results of Baird, Fardoun and Ouakkas \cite{BFO}.
The absence of interesting harmonic sections for the Sasaki and Cheeger-Gromoll metrics has led to the consideration of alternatives, for example in the form of a two-parameter family of natural metrics shown to relax existence conditions for harmonicity. This article investigates harmonic Killing vector fields, proves their non-existence on S^2, obtains rigidity results for harmonic gradient vector fields on the two-sphere, classifies spherical quadratic gradient fields in all dimensions and determines the tension field, concluding with the discovery of a family of metrics making Hopf vector …
Every oriented 4-manifold admits a folded symplectic structure, which in turn determines a homotopy class of compatible almost complex structures that are discontinuous across the folding hypersurface ("fold") in a controlled fashion. We define folded holomorphic maps, i.e. pseudo-holomorphic maps that are discontinuous across the fold. The boundary values on the fold are mediated by tunneling maps which are punctured H-holomorphic maps into the folding hypersurface with prescribed asymptotics on closed characteristics. Our main result is that the linearized operator of this boundary value pro…
