We prove that if a geodesically complete $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ space $X$ admits a proper cocompact isometric action of a group, then the Izeki-Nayatani invariant of $X$ is less than $1$. Let $G$ be a finite connected graph, $μ_1 (G)$ be the linear spectral gap of $G$, and $λ_1 (G,X)$ be the nonlinear spectral gap of $G$ with respect to such a $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ space $X$. Then, the result implies that the ratio $λ_1 (G,X) / μ_1 (G)$ is bounded from below by a positive constant which is independent of the graph $G$. It follows that any isometric action of a random group of the graph model on such $X…
We investigate CAT(0) metric spaces whose associated Tits boundary is compact. Prominent examples of such spaces are of course the euclidean ones. However there exist non trivial geodesically complete CAT(0) spaces with compact Tits boundary that are far from being flat. We show that if the isometry group of such a space acts cocompactly, then the space is "as flat as possible", i.e. the boundary minimal subspace must be flat. Our result relies on the existence of hyperbolic isometries, which is a problem itself. We hence add the proof of the following existence proposition: a cocompact CAT(0)…
Non-positively curved spaces admitting a cocompact isometric action of an amenable group are investigated. A classification is established under the assumption that there is no global fixed point at infinity under the full isometry group. The visual boundary is then a spherical building. When the ambient space is geodesically complete, it must be a product of flats, symmetric spaces, biregular trees and Bruhat--Tits buildings. We provide moreover a sufficient condition for a spherical building arising as the visual boundary of a proper CAT(0) space to be Moufang, and deduce that an irreducible…

This paper is about geometric and topological properties of a proper CAT(0) space $X$ which is cocompact - i.e. which has a compact generating domain with respect to the full isometry group. It is shown that geodesic segments in $X$ can "almost" be extended to geodesic rays. A basic ingredient of the proof of this geometric statement is the topological theorem that there is a top dimension $d$ in which the compactly supported integral cohomology of $X$ is non-zero. It is also proved that the boundary-at-infinity of $X$ (with the cone topology) has Lebesgue covering dimension $d-1$. It is not a…

We prove the following rank rigidity result for proper CAT(0) spaces with one-dimensional Tits boundaries: Let $Γ$ be a group acting properly discontinuously, cocompactly, and by isometries on such a space $X$. If the Tits diameter of $\partial X$ equals $π$ and $Γ$ does not act minimally on $\partial X$, then $\partial X$ is a spherical building or a spherical join. If $X$ is also geodesically complete, then $X$ is a Euclidean building, higher rank symmetric space, or a nontrivial product. Much of the proof, which involves finding a Tits-closed convex building-like subset of $\partial X$, doe…
In the present paper we characterize the surjective isometries of the space of compact, convex subsets of proper, geodesically complete CAT(0)-spaces in which geodesics do not split, endowed with the Hausdorff metric. Moreover, an analogue characterization of the surjective isometries of the space of compact subsets of a proper, uniquely geodesic, geodesically complete metric space in which geodesics do not split, when endowed with the Hausdorff metric, is given.

We prove that the class of convex-cocompact Kleinian groups is quasi-isometrically rigid. We also establish that a word hyperbolic group with a planar boundary different from the sphere is virtually a convex-cocompact Kleinian group provided that its boundary has Ahlfors regular conformal dimension strictly less than $2$ or if it acts geometrically on a CAT(0) cube complex.
We study geodesically complete and locally compact Hadamard spaces X whose Tits boundary is a connected irreducible spherical building. We show that X is symmetric iff complete geodesics in X do not branch and a Euclidean building otherwise. Furthermore, every boundary equivalence (cone topology homeomorphism preserving the Tits metric) between two such spaces is induced by a homothety. As an application, we can extend the Mostow and Prasad rigidity theorems to compact singular (orbi)spaces of nonpositive curvature which are homotopy equivalent to a quotient of a symmetric space or Euclidean b…

Let $X$ be a proper, non-compact CAT(-1) space, and $Γ$ a discrete cocompact subgroup of the isometries of $X$. We compactify the diagonal action of $Γ$ on $X \times X$ considering a domain of the horofunction boundary with respect to the maximum metric.

We examine volume pinching problems of CAT(1) spaces. We characterize a class of compact geodesically complete CAT(1) spaces of small specific volume. We prove a sphere theorem for compact CAT(1) homology manifolds of small volume. We also formulate a criterion of manifold recognition for homology manifolds on volume growths under an upper curvature bound.
Let $X$ be a compact, geodesically complete, locally CAT(0) space such that the universal cover admits a rank one axis. We prove the Bowen-Margulis measure on the space of geodesics is the unique measure of maximal entropy for the geodesic flow, which has topological entropy equal to the critical exponent of the Poincaré series.
We study groups of isometries of packed, geodesically complete, CAT$(0)$-spaces for which the systole at every point is smaller than a universal constant depending only on the packing, deducing strong rigidity results. We show that if a space as above has some negative curvature behaviour then it cannot support a thin action: this generalizes the classical Margulis Lemma to a broader class of spaces.

We will show that if a proper complete CAT(0) space X has a visual boundary homeomorphic to the join of two Cantor sets, and X admits a geometric group action by a group containing a subgroup isomorphic to Z^2, then its Tits boundary is the spherical join of two uncountable discrete sets. If X is geodesically complete, then X is a product, and the group has a finite index subgroup isomorphic to a lattice in the product of two isometry groups of bounded valence bushy trees.
Injective metric spaces, or absolute 1-Lipschitz retracts, share a number of properties with CAT(0) spaces. In the 1960es, J. R. Isbell showed that every metric space X has an injective hull E(X). Here it is proved that if X is the vertex set of a connected locally finite graph with a uniform stability property of intervals, then E(X) is a locally finite polyhedral complex with finitely many isometry types of n-cells, isometric to polytopes in l^n_\infty, for each n. This applies to a class of finitely generated groups G, including all word hyperbolic groups and abelian groups, among others. T…
We study those groups that act properly discontinuously, cocompactly, and isometrically on CAT(0) spaces with isolated flats and the Relative Fellow Traveller Property. The groups in question include word hyperbolic CAT(0) groups as well as geometrically finite Kleinian groups and numerous 2-dimensional CAT(0) groups. For such a group we show that there is an intrinsic notion of a quasiconvex subgroup which is equivalent to the inclusion being a quasi-isometric embedding. We also show that the visual boundary of the CAT(0) space is actually an invariant of the group. More generally we show tha…
We give positive answers for questions by Berestovskii. Namely, we prove that every bijection of locally compact geodesically complete and connected at infinity CAT(0)-space $X$ onto itself preserving some fixed distance or satellite relations is an isometry of this space. The proof of this theorem is based on another result stated by Berestovskii as a problem: the metric of the space $X$ may be recovered from its diagonal tube corresponding to an arbitrary number $r > 0$.
Let $X$ be a proper CAT($0$) space and $G$ a cocompact group of isometries of $X$ without fixed point at infinity. We prove that if $\partial X$ contains an invariant subset of circumradius $π/2$, then $X$ contains a quasi-dense, closed convex subspace that splits as a product. Adding the assumption that the $G$-action on $X$ is properly discontinuous, we give more conditions that are equivalent to a product splitting. In particular, this occurs if $\partial X$ contains a proper nonempty, closed, invariant, $π$-convex set in $\partial X$; or if some nonempty closed, invariant set in $\partial …
Motivated by the well-known cases of the real Hilbert ball and complete R-trees, being both particular cases of CAT(-1) spaces, we give an affirmative answer to the question of whether the geodesically boundedness property is a necessary and sufficient condition for a closed convex subset K of a complete CAT(k) space, with k < 0, to have the fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings

Suppose a group $G$ is relatively hyperbolic with respect to a collection $\PP$ of its subgroups and also acts properly, cocompactly on a $\CAT(0)$ (or $δ$--hyperbolic) space $X$. The relatively hyperbolic structure provides a relative boundary $\partial(G,\PP)$. The $\CAT(0)$ structure provides a different boundary at infinity $\partial X$. In this article, we examine the connection between these two spaces at infinity. In particular, we show that $\partial (G,\PP)$ is $G$--equivariantly homeomorphic to the space obtained from $\partial X$ by identifying the peripheral limit points of the sam…
Let $X=S\times E \times B$ be the metric product of a symmetric space $S$ of noncompact type, a Euclidean space $E$ and a product $B$ of Euclidean buildings. Let $Γ$ be a discrete group acting isometrically and cocompactly on $X$. We determine a family of quasi-isometry invariants for such $Γ$, namely the $k$-dimensional Dehn functions, which measure the difficulty to fill $k$-spheres by $(k+1)$-balls (for $1\leq k\leq \dim\ X-1$). Since the group $Γ$ is quasi-isometric to the associated CAT(0) space $X$, assertions about Dehn functions for $Γ$ are equivalent tothe corresponding results on fil…
Let $X$ be a proper, geodesically complete CAT(0) space which satisfies Chen and Eberlein's duality condition. We show the existence of a strong notion of rank for $X$ by proving that the parallel sets $P_v$ of geodesics $v$ in $X$ are generically flat. More precisely, let $GX$ be the space of parametrized unit-speed geodesics in $X$. There is a unique $k$ and a dense $G_δ$ set $\mathcal{A}$ in $GX$ such that $P_v$ is isometric to flat Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^k$, for all $v \in \mathcal{A}$. It follows that $\mathbb{R}^k$ isometrically embeds in $P_v$ for every $v \in GX$.
We study locally compact, locally geodesically complete, locally CAT(k) spaces (GCBA(k)-spaces). We prove a Croke-type local volume estimate only depending on the dimension of these spaces. We show that a local doubling condition, with respect to the natural measure, implies pure-dimensionality. Then, we consider GCBA(k)-spaces satisfying a uniform packing condition at some fixed scale or a doubling condition at arbitrarily small scale, and prove several compactness results with respect to pointed Gromov-Hausdorff convergence. Finally, as a particular case, we study convergence and stability o…

We show that every cross ratio preserving homeomorphism between boundaries of Hadamard manifolds extends to a continuous map, called circumcenter extension, provided that the manifolds satisfy certain visibility conditions. We show that this map is a rough isometry, whenever the manifolds admit cocompact group actions by isometries and we improve the quasi-isometry constants provided by Biswas in the case of CAT(-1)} spaces. Finally, we provide a sufficient condition for this map to be an isometry in the case of Hadamard surfaces.

We consider Moebius and conformal homeomorphisms $f : \partial X \to \partial Y$ between boundaries of CAT(-1) spaces $X,Y$ equipped with visual metrics. A conformal map $f$ induces a topological conjugacy of the geodesic flows of $X$ and $Y$, which is flip-equivariant if $f$ is Moebius. We define a function $S(f) : \partial ^2 X \to \mathbb{R}$, the {\it integrated Schwarzian} of $f$, which measures the deviation of the topological conjugacy from being flip-equivariant, in particular vanishing if $f$ is Moebius. Conversely if $X,Y$ are simply connected complete manifolds with pinched negative…
In this note, we extend the main results of our paper on quasilinearization and curvature of Aleksandrov spaces of curvature $\leq0$ to curvature bounds other than $0$. For non-zero $K$, we employ the previously introduced notion of the $K$-quadrilateral cosine, which is the cosine under parallel transport in model $K$-space, and which is denoted by $\operatorname{cosq}_{K}$. Our principal result states that a geodesically connected metric space (of diameter not greater than $π/\left(2\sqrt{K}\right) $ if $K>0$) is an $\Re_{K}$ domain (otherwise known as a $\operatorname{CAT}\left(K\right) $ s…
