We extend a recent result on the existence of wandering domains of polynomial functions defined over the p-adic field C_p to any algebraically closed complete non-archimedean field C_K with residue characteristic p>0. We also prove that polynomials with wandering domains form a dense subset of a certain one-dimensional family of degree p+1 polynomials in C_K[z].
Let K be a non-archimedean field with residue field k, and suppose that k is not an algebraic extension of a finite field. We prove two results concerning wandering domains of rational functions f in K(z) and Rivera-Letelier's notion of nontrivial reduction. First, if f has nontrivial reduction, then assuming some simple hypotheses, we show that the Fatou set of f has wandering components by any of the usual definitions of such components. Second, we show that if k has characteristic zero and K is discretely valued, then the converse holds; that is, the existence of a wandering domain implies …
Let $f$ be a rational function of degree $d>1$ on the projective line over a possibly non-archimedean algebraically closed field. A well-known process initiated by Brolin considers the pullbacks of points under iterates of $f$, and produces an important equilibrium measure. We define the asymptotic Fekete property of pullbacks of points, which means that they mirror the equilibrium measure appropriately. As application, we obtain an error estimate of equidistribution of pullbacks of points for $C^1$-test functions in terms of the proximity of wandering critical orbits to the initial points, an…
We study a question on characterizing polynomials among rational functions of degree $>1$ on the projective line over an algebraically closed field that is complete with respect to a non-trivial and non-archimedean absolute value, from the viewpoint of dynamics and potential theory on the Berkovich projective line.
The aim of this note is to give an effective criterion to verify whether a cubic polynomial over a non-Archimedean field has a weak Néron model or not.
Let K be a non-archimedean field, and let f in K(z) be a polynomial or rational function of degree at least 2. We present a necessary and sufficient condition, involving only the fixed points of f and their preimages, that determines whether or not the dynamical system f on P^1 has potentially good reduction.
In a recent breakthrough, Dimitrov solved the Schinzel-Zassenhaus Conjecture. We follow his approach and adapt it to certain dynamical systems arising from polynomials of the form $T^p+c$ where $p$ is a prime number and where the orbit of $0$ is finite. For example, if $p=2$, and $0$ is periodic under $T^2+c$ with $c\in\mathbb{R}\smallsetminus\{-2\}$, we prove a lower bound for the local canonical height of a wandering algebraic integer that is inversely proportional to the field degree. From this we are able to deduce a lower bound for the canonical height of a wandering point that decays lik…
Given a polynomial $ϕ$ over a global function field $K$ and a wandering base point $b\in K$, we give a geometric condition on $ϕ$ ensuring the existence of primitive prime divisors for almost all points in the orbit $\mathcal{O}_ϕ(b):=\{ϕ^n(b)\}_{n\geq0}$
We prove a variant of a square function estimate for the extension operator associated to the moment curve in non-archimedean local fields. The arguments rely on a structural analysis of congruences (sublevel sets) of univariate polynomials over field extensions of the base field. Our analysis can be adapted to the archimedean setting as well.
We continue the study in [21] of the linearizability near an indif- ferent fixed point of a power series f, defined over a field of prime characteristic p. It is known since the work of Herman and Yoccoz [13] in 1981 that Siegel's linearization theorem [27] is true also for non- Archimedean fields. However, they also showed that the condition in Siegel's theorem is 'usually' not satisfied over fields of prime character- istic. Indeed, as proven in [21], there exist power series f such that the associated conjugacy function diverges. We prove that if the degrees of the monomials of a power seri…
Let $\underline{\mathcal F}$ be a $τ$-sheaf. Building on previous work of Drinfeld, Anderson, Taguchi, and Wan, Böckle and Pink \cite{bp1} develop a cohomology theory for $\underline{\mathcal F}$. In \cite{boc1} Böckle uses this theory to establish the analytic continuation of the $L$-series associated to $\underline{\mathcal F}$ (which is a characteristic $p$ valued ``Dirichlet series'') {\em and} the logarithmic growth of the degrees of its special polynomials. In this paper we shall show that this logarithmic growth is all that is needed to analytically continue the original $L$-series as w…
In this article we introduce a new type of local zeta functions and study some connections with pseudodifferential operators in the framework of non-Archimedean fields. The new local zeta functions are defined by integrating complex powers of norms of polynomials multiplied by infinitely pseudo-differentiable functions. In characteristic zero, the new local zeta functions admit meromorphic continuations to the whole complex plane, but they are not rational functions. The real parts of the possible poles have a description similar to the poles of Archimedean zeta functions. But they can be irra…
We prove an analogue of the Yomdin-Gromov Lemma for $p$-adic definable sets and more broadly in a non-archimedean, definable context. This analogue keeps track of piecewise approximation by Taylor polynomials, a nontrivial aspect in the totally disconnected case. We apply this result to bound the number of rational points of bounded height on the transcendental part of $p$-adic subanalytic sets, and to bound the dimension of the set of complex polynomials of bounded degree lying on an algebraic variety defined over $\mathbb{C} ((t))$, in analogy to results by Pila and Wilkie, resp. by Bombieri…
We consider the problem of counting polynomial curves on analytic or definable subsets over the field ${\mathbb{C}}(\!(t)\!)$, as a function of the degree $r$. A result of this type could be expected by analogy with the classical Pila-Wilkie counting theorem in the archimean situation. Some non-archimedean analogs of this type have been developed in the work of Cluckers-Comte-Loeser for the field ${\mathbb{Q}}_p$, but the situation in ${\mathbb{C}}(\!(t)\!)$ appears to be significantly different. We prove that the set of polynomial curves of a fixed degree $r$ on the transcendental part of a s…
Motohashi established an explicit identity between the fourth moment of the Riemann zeta function weighted by some test function and a spectral cubic moment of automorphic L-functions. By an entirely different method, we prove a generalization of this formula to a fourth moment of Dirichlet L-functions modulo q weighted by a non-archimedean test function. This establishes a new reciprocity formula. As an application, we obtain sharp upper bounds for the fourth moment twisted by the square of a Dirichlet polynomial of length q^{1/4}. An auxiliary result of independent interest is a sharp upper …
Using non-archimedean q-integrals on Zp defined in [15, 16], we define a new Changhee q-Euler polynomials and numbers which are different from those of Kim [7] and Carlitz [2]. We define generating functions of multiple q-Euler numbers and polynomials. Furthermore we construct multivariate Hurwitz type zeta function which interpolates the multivariate q-Euler numbers or polynomials at negative integers.
Let K be a number field with algebraic closure K-bar, let S be a finite set of places of K containing the archimedean places, and let f be a Chebyshev polynomial. We prove that if a in K-bar is not preperiodic, then there are only finitely many preperiodic points b in K-bar which are S-integral with respect to a.
In this paper, we study the Igusa's local zeta functions of a class of hybrid polynomials with coefficients in a non-archimedean local field of positive characteristic. Such class of hybrid polynomial was first introduced by Hauser in 2003 to study the resolution of singularities in positive characteristic. We prove the rationality of these local zeta functions and describe explicitly their poles. The proof is based on Igusa's stationary phase formula.
We prove that if $f$ is a polynomial over a number field $K$ with a finite superattracting periodic point and a non-archimedean place of bad reduction, then there is an $ε>0$ such that only finitely many $P\in K^{\text{ab}}$ have canonical height less than $ε$ with respect to $f$. The key ingredient is the geometry of the filled Julia set at a place of bad reduction. We also prove a conditional uniform boundedness result for the $K$-rational preperiodic points of such polynomials, as well as a uniform lower bound on the canonical height of non-preperiodic points in $K$. We further prove uncond…
For every $m\in\mathbb{N}$, we establish the equidistribution of the sequence of the averaged pull-backs of a Dirac measure at any given value in $\mathbb{C}\setminus\{0\}$ under the $m$-th order derivatives of the iterates of a polynomials $f\in \mathbb{C}[z]$ of degree $d>1$ towards the harmonic measure of the filled-in Julia set of $f$ with pole at $\infty$. We also establish non-archimedean and arithmetic counterparts using the potential theory on the Berkovich projective line and the adelic equidistribution theory over a number field $k$ for a sequence of effective divisors on $\mathbb{P}…
Let $K$ be a local field and $f(x)\in K[x]$ be a non-constant polynomial. When ${\rm char}K=0$, Igusa showed the local zeta function is a rational function. However, when ${\rm char}K>0$, the rationality of the local zeta function is unknown in general. In this paper, we study the local zeta functions for the so-called hybrid polynomials in three variables with coefficients in a non-archimedean local field of positive characteristic. These hybrid polynomials were first introduced by Hauser in 2003 to study the resolution of singularities in positive characteristic. We establish the rationality…
We provide upper bounds for the sum of the multiplicities of the non-constant irreducible factors that appear in the canonical decomposition of a polynomial $f(X)\in\mathbb{Z}[X]$, in case all the roots of $f$ lie inside an Apollonius circle associated to two points on the real axis with integer abscissae $a$ and $b$, with ratio of the distances to these points depending on the admissible divisors of $f(a)$ and $f(b)$. In particular, we obtain such upper bounds for the case where $f(a)$ and $f(b)$ have few prime factors, and $f$ is an Eneström-Kakeya polynomial, or a Littlewood polynomial, or …
Let $K$ be a number field, $f\in K[x]$ a quadratic polynomial, and $n\in\{1,2,3\}$. We show that if $f$ has a point of period $n$ in every non-archimedean completion of $K$, then $f$ has a point of period $n$ in $K$. For $n\in\{4,5\}$ we show that there exist at most finitely many linear conjugacy classes of quadratic polynomials over $K$ for which this local-global principle fails. By considering a stronger form of this principle, we strengthen global results obtained by Morton and Flynn-Poonen-Schaefer in the case $K=\mathbf Q$. More precisely, we show that for every quadratic polynomial $f\…
We study the twisted local zeta function associated to a polynomial in two variables with coefficients in a non-Archimedean local field of arbitrary characteristic. Under the hypothesis that the polynomial is arithmetically non degenerate, we obtain an explicit list of candidates for the poles in terms of geometric data obtained from a family of arithmetic Newton polygons attached to the polynomial. The notion of arithmetical non degeneracy due to Saia and Zúñiga-Galindo is weaker than the usual notion of non degeneracy due to Kouchnirenko. As an application we obtain asymptotic expansions for…
We introduce descent methods to the study of strong approximation on algebraic varieties. We apply them to two classes of varieties defined by P(t)=N_{K/k}(z): firstly for quartic extensions of number fields K/k and quadratic polynomials P(t) in one variable, and secondly for k=Q, an arbitrary number field K and P(t) a product of linear polynomials over Q in at least two variables. Finally, we illustrate that a certain unboundedness condition at archimedean places is necessary for strong approximation.
Let $f$ be a polynomial in $n$ variables over some number field and $Z$ a subscheme of affine $n$-space. The notion of motivic oscillation index of $f$ at $Z$ was initiated by Cluckers (2008) and Cluckers-Mustaţǎ-Nguyen (2019). In this paper we elaborate on this notion and raise several questions. The first one is stability under base field extension; this question is linked to a deep understanding of the density of non-archimedean local fields over which Igusa's local zeta functions of $f$ has a pole with given real part. The second one is around Igusa's conjecture for exponential sums with b…
