The aim of this article is to give an overview of several types of Paley-Wiener theorems occuring in harmonic analysis related to symmetric spaces. This will serve as a motivation for the introduction of the $Θ$-spherical functions, the correspondint $Θ$-spherical Fourier transform, and the Paley-Wiener theorem for this transform. Up to now such a theorem has only been proven in very special cases, and still, its formulation and proof are very technical. In this paper we do not go into details of the proofs, but present an overview which explains the different examples which have inspired and motivated the theory of $Θ$-spherical functions.
The paper studies weak Paley-Wiener properties for group extensions by use of Mackey's theory. The main theorem establishes sufficient conditions on the dual action to ensure that the group has the weak Paley-Wiener property. The theorem applies to yield the weak Paley-Wiener property for large classes of simply connected, connected solvable Lie groups (including exponential Lie groups), but also criteria for non-unimodular groups or motion groups.
We study the Fourier transform for compactly supported distributional sections of complex homogeneous vector bundles on symmetric spaces of non-compact type $X = G/K$. We prove a characterisation of their range. In fact, from Delorme's Paley-Wiener theorem for compactly supported smooth functions on a real reductive group of Harish-Chandra class, we deduce topological Paley-Wiener and Paley-Wiener-Schwartz theorems for sections.
We formulate and prove a Paley-Wiener theorem for Harish-Chandra modules for a real reductive group. As a corollary we obtain a new and elementary proof of the Helgason conjecture.
In this paper we prove a version of a trace Paley--Wiener theorem for tempered representations of a reductive $p$--adic group. This is applied to complete certain investigation of Shahidi on the proof that a Plancherel measure is invariant of a $L$--packet of discrete series.
We define the Fourier transform of compactly supported Whittaker functions on a reductive p-adic group and we characterize the image of this transformation.
We extend the Paley--Wiener theorem for riemannian symmetric spaces to an important class of infinite dimensional symmetric spaces. For this we define a notion of propagation of symmetric spaces and examine the direct (injective) limit symmetric spaces defined by propagation. This relies on some of our earlier work on invariant differential operators and the action of Weyl group invariant polynomials under restriction.
Paley-Wiener type theorems describe the image of a given space of functions, often compactly supported functions, under an integral transform, usually a Fourier transform on a group or homogeneous space. Several authors have studied Paley-Wiener type theorems for Euclidean spaces, Riemannian symmetric spaces of compact or non-compact type as well as affine Riemannian symmetric spaces. In this article we prove a Paley-Wiener theorem for homogeneous line bundles over a compact symmetric space $U/K$. The Paley-Wiener theorem characterizes f with sufficiently small support in terms of holomorphic …
We show that Arthur's Paley-Wiener theorem for K-finite compactly supported smooth functions on a real reductive Lie group G of the Harish-Chandra class can be deduced from the Paley-Wiener theorem we established in the more general setting of a reductive symmetric space. In addition, we formulate an extension of Arthur's theorem to K-finite compactly supported generalized functions (distributions) on G and show that this result follows from the analogous result for reductive symmetric spaces as well.
Let G/H be a reductive symmetric space and K a maximal compact subgroup of G. We study Fourier transforms of compactly supported K-finite distributions on G/H and characterize the image of the space of such distributions.
In this paper we make a detailed comparison between the Paley-Wiener theorems of J. Arthur and P. Delorme. We prove that these theorems are equivalent from an a priori point of view. We also give an alternative formulation of the theorems in terms of the Hecke algebra of bi-K-finite distributions supported on K. Our techniques involve derivatives of holomorphic families of continuous representations and Harish-Chandra modules.
Let X = G/H be a reductive symmetric space and K a maximal compact subgroup of G. The image under the Fourier transform of the space of K-finite compactly supported smooth functions on X is characterized.
The Fourier coefficients of a smooth $K$-invariant function on a compact symmetric space $M=U/K$ are given by integration of the function against the spherical functions. For functions with support in a neighborhood of the origin, we describe the size of the support by means of the exponential type of a holomorphic extension of the Fourier coefficients
Let $G$ be (the rational points of) a connected reductive group over a local non-archimedean field $F$. In this article we formulate and prove a property of an $F$-spherical homogeneous $G$-space (which in addition satisfies the finite multiplicity property, which is expected to hold for all $F$-spherical homogeneous $G$-spaces) which we call the Paley-Wiener property. This is much more elementary, but also contains much less information, than the recent relevant work of Delorme, Harinck and Sakellaridis (however, it holds for a wider class of spaces). The property results from a parallel cate…
We characterize the Besov spaces associated to the Gelfand pairs on the Heisenberg group. The characterization is given in terms of bandlimited wavelet coefficients where the bandlimitedness is introduced using spherical Fourier transform. To obtain these results we develop an approach to the characterization of Besov spaces in abstract Hilbert spaces through compactly supported admissible functions.
Let S(X) be the Schwartz space of compactly supported smooth functions on the p-adic points of a spherical variety X, and let C(X) be the space of Harish-Chandra Schwartz functions. Under assumptions on the spherical variety, which are satisfied when it is symmetric, we prove Paley-Wiener theorems for the two spaces, characterizing them in terms of their spectral transforms. As a corollary, we get relative analogs of the smooth and tempered Bernstein centers -- rings of multipliers for S(X) and C(X). When X= a reductive group, our theorem for C(X) specializes to the well-known theorem of Haris…
Let ${\boldsymbol{G}}$ be a connected reductive group defined over a non--Archimedean local field $F$. Put $G={\boldsymbol{G}}(F)$. Let $θ$ be an $F$--automorphism of ${\boldsymbol{G}}$, and let $ω$ be a smooth character of $G$. This paper is concerned with the smooth complex representations $π$ of $G$ such that $π^θ=π\circθ$ is isomorphic to $ωπ=ω\otimesπ$. If $π$ is admissible, in particular irreducible, the choice of an isomorphism $A$ from $ωπ$ to $π^θ$ (and of a Haar measure on $G$) defines a distribution $Θ_π^A={\rm tr}(π\circ A)$ on $G$. The twisted Fourier transform associates to a com…
One of the important questions related to any integral transform on a manifold M or on a homogeneous space G/K is the description of the image of a given space of functions. If M=G/K, where (G,K) is a Gelfand pair, then the harmonic analysis is closely related to the representations of G and the direct integral decomposition of L^2(M) into irreducible representations. We give a short overview of the Fourier transform on such spaces and then ask if one can describe the image of the space of smooth compactly supported functions in terms of the spectral parameter, i.e., the parameterization of th…
Let $F$ be a local non archimedian field of characteristic $0$, and $G$ a non-connected reductive group over $F$. We denote $G^0$ the connected component of the identity and assume the quotient $G/G^0$ is abelian. For $f$ a locally constant compactly supported function on $G$ and $π$ a complex smooth representation of $G$, we define the Fourier transform of $f$ evaluated at $π$ to be $π(f) = \int_{G} f(g) π(g) \, dg$, which is an endomorphism of the underlying vector space of $π$. We give a description of the image of this Fourier transform map : given, for every $π$ in a certain family of ind…
The description of the Paley-Wiener space for compactly supported smooth functions $C^\infty_c(G)$ on a semi-simple Lie group $G$ involves certain intertwining conditions that are difficult to handle. In the present paper, we make them completely explicit for $G=\mathbf{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})^d$ ($d\in \mathbb{N}$) and $G=\mathbf{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$. Our results are based on a defining criterion for the Paley-Wiener space, valid for general groups of real rank one, that we derive from Delorme's proof of the Paley-Wiener theorem. In a forthcoming paper, we will show how these results can be used to s…
It is one of a series of papers whose goal is to stabilize the twisted trace formula. We consider here a "twisted space" over the real field. We prove in this twisted situation the results obtained by Arthur in his Selecta's paper. That is the existence of transfer of tempered representations. We use the Paley-Wiener's theorems of Renard and Delorme-Mezo, the work of Shelstad about transfer of functions and a recent result of Moeglin about super-tempered representations. As corollaries, we obtain a stable version of the Paley-Wiener theorem and the fact that transfer of functions preserves K-f…
By proving a topological Paley-Wiener Theorem for Riemannian symmetric spaces of non-compact type, we show that a non-zero invariant differential operator is a homeomorphism from the space of test functions onto its image and hence surjective when extended to the space of distributions.
We show a matrix Paley-Wiener theorem for the Hecke algebra of a p-adic group. The proof is based on an analogue of Harish-Chandra's Plancherel formula.
We define a Fourier transform and a convolution product for functions and distributions on Heisenberg--Clifford Lie supergroups. The Fourier transform exchanges the convolution and a pointwise product, and is an intertwining operator for the left regular representation. We generalize various classical theorems, including the Paley--Wiener--Schwartz theorem, and define a convolution Banach algebra.
In this paper we give a simpler proof of the $L^p$-Schwartz space isomorphism $(0< p\leq 2)$ under the Fourier transform for the class of functions of left $δ$-type on a Riemannian symmetric space of rank one. Our treatment rests on Anker's \cite{A} proof of the corresponding result in the case of left $K$-invariant functions on $X$. Thus we give a proof which relies only on the Paley--Wiener theorem.
