Let G be a split semisimple algebraic group with trivial center. Let S be a compact oriented surface, with or without boundary. We define {\it positive} representations of the fundamental group of S to G(R), construct explicitly all positive representations, and prove that they are faithful, discrete, and positive hyperbolic; the moduli space of positive representations is a topologically trivial open domain in the space of all representations.
When S have holes, we defined two moduli spaces closely related to the moduli spaces of G-local systems on S. We show that they carry a lot of interesting structures. In particular we define a distinguished collection of coordinate systems, equivariant under the action of the mapping class group of S. We prove that their transition functions are subtraction free. Thus we have positive structures on these moduli spaces. Therefore we can take their points with values in any positive semifield. Their positive real points provide the two higher Teichmuller spaces related to G and S, while the points with values in the tropical semifields provide the lamination spaces. We define the motivic avatar of the Weil-Petersson form for one of these spaces. It is related to the motivic dilogarithm.
The aim of this paper is to study the structure of the higher-dimensional Teichmüller and Riemann moduli spaces, viewed as stacks over the category of complex manifolds. We first show that the space of complex operators on a smooth manifold admits a foliation transversely modeled on a translation groupoid, a concept that we define here. We then show how to construct explicitly a holonomy groupoid for such a structure and show that in this case its objects and morphisms form a finite-dimensional analytic space and its source and target maps are smooth morphisms. This holonomy data encodes how t…
In this paper we continue our study on the canonical metrics on the Teichmüller and the moduli space of Riemman surfaces. We first prove the equivalence of the Bergman metric and the Carathéodory metric to the Kähler-Einstein metric, solving another old conjecture of Yau. We then prove that the Ricci curvature of the perturbed Ricci metric has negative upper and lower bounds, and it also has bounded geometry. Then we study in detail the boundary behaviors of the Kähler-Einstein metric and prove that it has bounded geometry, and all of the covariant derivatives of its curvature are uniformly bo…
A Teichmüller space $Teich$ is a quotient of the space of all complex structures on a given manifold $M$ by the connected components of the group of diffeomorphisms. The mapping class group $Γ$ of $M$ is the group of connected components of the diffeomorphism group. The moduli problems can be understood as statements about the $Γ$-action on $Teich$. I will describe the mapping class group and the Teichmuller space for a hyperkahler manifold. It turns out that this action is ergodic. We use the ergodicity to show that a hyperkahler manifold is never Kobayashi hyperbolic. This is my ICM submissi…
Some connected components of a moduli space are mundane in the sense that they are distinguished only by obvious topological invariants or have no special characteristics. Others are more alluring and unusual either because they are not detected by primary invariants, or because they have special geometric significance, or both. In this paper we describe new examples of such `exotic' components in moduli spaces of SO(p,q)-Higgs bundles on closed Riemann surfaces or, equivalently, moduli spaces of surface group representations into the Lie group SO(p,q). Furthermore, we discuss how these exotic…
This paper is a survey on the role of Higgs bundle theory in the study of higher Teichmüller spaces. Recall that the Teichmüller space of a compact surface can be identified with a certain connected component of the moduli space of representations of the fundamental group of the surface into $\mathrm{PSL}(2,{\mathbb{R}})$. Higher Teichmüller spaces correspond to special components of the moduli space of representations when one replaces $\mathrm{PSL}(2,{\mathbb{R}})$ by a real non-compact semisimple Lie group of higher rank. Examples of these spaces are provided by the Hitchin components for s…
In this paper, we present a unified study of the moduli space of tropical curves and Outer space which we link via period maps to the moduli space of tropical abelian varieties and the space of positive definite quadratic forms. Our work is a first step towards exhibiting Outer space and the space of positive definite quadratic forms as analogues of Teichmüller space and Siegel space, respectively, in tropical geometry. All these spaces and the maps among them are described within the category of ideal stacky fans, which we describe in detail.
We define convex projective structures on 2D surfaces with holes and investigate their moduli space. We prove that this moduli space is canonically identified with the higher Teichmuller space for the group PSL_3 defined in our paper math/0311149. We define the quantum version of the moduli space of convex projective structures on surfaces with holes. The present paper can serve as an introduction to math/0311149. In the Appendix we show that the space of configurations of 5 flags in the projective plane is of cluster type E_7.
This paper proves the Beilinson-Soul{é} vanishing conjecture for motives attached to the moduli spaces of curves of genus 0 with n marked points. As part of the proof, it is also proved that these motives are mixed Tate. As a consequence of Levine's work, one obtains then well defined categories of mixed Tate motives over the moduli spaces of curves . It is shown that morphisms between moduli spaces forgetting marked points and embedding as boundary components induce functors between those categories and how tangential bases points fit in these functorialities. Tannakian formalism attaches gro…
For $g,n\geq 0$ a 3-dimensional Calabi-Yau $A_\infty$-category $\mathcal C_{g,n}$ is constructed such that a component of the space of Bridgeland stability conditions, $\mathrm{Stab}(\mathcal C_{g,n})$, is a moduli space of quadratic differentials on a genus $g$ surface with simple zeros and $n$ simple poles. For a generic point in the moduli space the corresponding quantum/refined Donaldson--Thomas invariants are computed in terms of counts of finite-length geodesics on the flat surface determined by the quadratic differential. As a consequence, these counts satisfy wall-crossing formulas.
We consider the Grothendieck--Teichmüller group under a new aspect. Using real algebraic geometry and web theory we show that it preserves dihedral symmetry relations, present in the fundamental groupoids of configuration spaces of marked points on $\mathbb{C}$. The motivation of this paper is to be understood in the light of Grothendieck's initial philosophy stating that throughout hidden symmetries of the moduli spaces of curves one can shed some light on the absolute Galois group. This appears as a new development of the construction of the avatar of the Grothendieck--Teichmüller group and …
To a closed connected oriented surface $S$ of genus $g$ and a nonempty finite subset $P$ of $S$ is associated a simplicial complex (the arc complex) that plays a basic r\^ ole in understanding the mapping class group of the pair $(S,P)$. It is known that this arc complex contains in a natural way the product of the Teichmüller space of $(S,P)$ with an open simplex. In this paper we give an interpretation for the whole arc complex and prove that it is a quotient of a Deligne--Mumford extension of this Teichmüller space and a closed simplex. We also describe a modification of the arc complex in …
This work is motivated by two central questions in the birational geometry of moduli spaces of curves -- Fulton's conjecture and the effective cone of $\bar M_g$. We study the algebro-geometric aspect of Teichmuller curves parameterizing square-tiled surfaces with two applications: (a) there exist infinitely many rigid curves on the moduli space of hyperelliptic curves, they span the same extremal ray of the cone of moving curves and their union is Zariski dense, hence they yield infinitely many rigid curves with the same properties on the moduli space of stable n-pointed rational curves for e…
We construct the moduli space for equivalence classes of n-pointed tropical curves of genus g, together with its compactification given by weighted tropical curves, and establish some of its basic topological properties. We compare it to the moduli spaces of smooth and stable algebraic curves, from the combinatorial, the topological, and the Teichmüller point of view. The paper is written in an expository style, and it generalizes some results contained in sections 4-6 of arXiv:1001.2815v3.
This short expository note gives an elementary introduction to the study of dynamics on certain moduli spaces, and in particular the recent breakthrough result of Eskin, Mirzakhani, and Mohammadi. We also discuss the context and applications of this result, and connections to other areas of mathematics such as algebraic geometry, Teichmuller theory, and ergodic theory on homogeneous spaces.
Let $S$ be a surface, $G$ a simply-connected classical group, and $G'$ the associated adjoint form of the group. We show that the spaces of moduli spaces of framed local systems $\X_{G',S}$ and $\A_{G,S}$, which were constructed by Fock and Goncharov (\cite{FG1}), have the structure of cluster varieties, and thus together form a cluster ensemble. This simplifies some of the proofs in \cite{FG1}, and also allows one to quantize higher Teichmuller space following the formalism of \cite{FG2}, \cite{FG3}, and \cite{FG5}, which was previously only possible when $G$ was of type $A$.
This is an informal set of lecture notes on moduli spaces of curves based on a set of lectures given at the ICTP last summer. It begins at an elementary level and discusses the genus 1 case in detail. The notes then give an informal treatement of Teichmuller space and higher genus moduli spaces. The point of view is generally topological and analytical.
We give a characterizaton of smooth ample Hypersurfaces in Abelian Varieties and also describe an irreducible connected component of their moduli space: it consists of the Hypersurfaces of a given polarization type, plus the iterated univariate coverings of normal type (of the same polarization type). The above manifolds yield also a connected component of the open set of Teichmüller space consisting of Kähler complex structures.
In an earlier paper [Acta Mathematica, v. 176, 1996, 145-169, alg-geom/9505024 ] the present authors and Dennis Sullivan constructed the universal direct system of the classical Teichmüller spaces of Riemann surfaces of varying genus. The direct limit, which we called the universal commensurability Teichmüller space, $T_{infty}$, was shown to carry on it a natural action of the universal commensurability mapping class group, $MC_{\infty}$. In this paper we identify an interesting cofinal sub-system corresponding to the tower of finite-sheeted characteristic coverings over any fixed base surfac…
Consider the 1-dimensional Hurwitz space parameterizing covers of P^1 branched at four points. We study its intersection with divisor classes on the moduli space of curves. As an application, we calculate the slope of the Teichmuller curve parameterizing square-tiled cyclic covers and recover the sum of its Lyapunov exponents obtained by Forni, Matheus and Zorich. Motivated by the work of Eskin, Kontsevich and Zorich, we exhibit a relation among the slope of Hurwitz spaces, the sum of Lyapunov exponents and the Siegel-Veech constant for the moduli space of quadratic differentials.
Moduli spaces for Galois covers of p-adic Mumford curves by Mumford curves are constructed using Herrlich's Teichmuller spaces, Andre's orbifold fundamental groups, and Kato's graphs of groups encoding ramification data of charts for Mumford orbifolds.
A part of Grothendieck's program for studying the Galois group $G_{\mathbb Q}$ of the field of all algebraic numbers $\overline{\mathbb Q}$ emerged from his insight that one should lift its action upon $\overline{\mathbb Q}$ to the action of $G_{\mathbb Q}$ upon the (appropriately defined) profinite completion of $π_1({\mathbb P}^1 \setminus \{0,1, \infty\})$. The latter admits a good combinatorial encoding via finite graphs "dessins d'enfant". This part was actively developing during the last decades, starting with foundational works of A. Belyi, V. Drinfeld and Y. Ihara. Our brief note conce…
The tau function on the moduli space of generic holomorphic 1-differentials on complex algebraic curves is interpreted as a section of a line bundle on the projectivized Hodge bundle over the moduli space of stable curves. The asymptotics of the tau function near the boundary of the moduli space of 1-differentials is computed, and an explicit expression for the pullback of the Hodge class on the projectivized Hodge bundle in terms of the tautological class and the classes of boundary divisors is derived. This expression is used to clarify the geometric meaning of the Kontsevich-Zorich formula …
We construct an action of the big cactus group (the fundamental group of the Deligne-Mumford compactification of the moduli space of real curves of genus zero with n undistinguished marked points) on Fock-Goncharov's SL_m analog of the decorated Teichmuller space of ideal n-gons.
We give a Thurston-like definition for laminations on higher Teichmuller spaces associated to a surface $S$ and a semi-simple group $G$ for $G-SL_m$ and $PGL_m$. The case $G=SL_2$ or $PGL_2$ corresponds to the classical theory of laminations. Our construction involves positive configurations of points in the affine building. We show that these laminations are parameterized by the tropical points of the spaces $\X_{G,S}$ and $\A_{G,S}$ of Fock and Goncharov. Finally, we explain how these laminations give a compactification of higher Teichmuller spaces.
