Let F be an orthonormal basis of weight 2 cusp forms on Gamma_0(N). We show that various weighted averages of special values L(f \tensor chi, 1) over f in F are equal to 4 pi + O(N^{-1 + epsilon}). A previous result of Duke gives an error term of O(N^{-1/2} log N).
The bound here is used in the author's paper "Galois representations attached to Q-curves and the generalized Fermat equation A^4 + B^2 = C^p," (to appear, Amer. J. Math.) to show that certain spaces of cuspforms arising there contain forms whose L-functions have nonvanishing special value.
Version of May 2005: Nathan Ng found an error in the earlier version which yielded a bound too strong by a factor of log N; this is the corrected version, as it will appear in Canad. Math. Bull. The change does not affect the application to the Amer. J. Math. paper.
Let k and n be positive even integers. For a cuspidal Hecke eigenform h in the Kohnen plus subspace of weight k-n/2+1/2 and level 4, let I(h) be the Duke-Imamoglu-Ikeda lift of h in the space of cusp forms of weight k for Sp(n,Z), and f the primitive form of weight 2k-n for SL(2,Z) corresponding to h under the Shimura correspondence. We then express the ratio <I(h),I(h)>/< h, h > of the period of I(h) to that of h in terms of special values of certain L-functions of f. This proves the conjecture proposed by Ikeda concerning the period of the Duke-Imamoglu-Ikeda lift.
In this paper we investigate some consequences of the Gross/Zagier types of formulae which were introduced by Gross and Zagier, and were then generalized in various directions by Hatcher, Zhang, Kudla and several other people. Working in the classical context of central values of L-series of holomorphic forms of prime level, we deduce an exact average formula for suitable twists of such L-values, with a relation to the class number of associated imaginary quadratic fieds, thereby strengthening a result of Duke. One also obtains a stability result, as well as subconvexity (in this setting), and…
The equidistribution of roots of quadratic congruences with prime moduli depends crucially upon effective bounds for a special Weyl linear form. Duke, Friedlander and Iwaniec discovered a strong estimate for this Weyl linear form when the quadratic polynomial has negative discriminant. Tóth established an analogous but weaker bound when the quadratic polynomial has positive discriminant. We obtain a stronger estimate for the Weyl linear form for quadratics of positive discriminants.
We establish an error estimate for counting lattice points in Euclidean norm balls (associated to an arbitrary irreducible linear representation) for lattices in simple Lie groups of real rank at least two. Our approach utilizes refined spectral estimates based on the existence of universal pointwise bounds for spherical functions on the groups involved. We focus particularly on the case of the special linear groups where we give a detailed proof of error estimates which constitute the first improvement of the best current bound established by Duke, Rudnick and Sarnak in 1991, and are nearly t…
First we reprove, using representation theory and the relative trace formula of Jacquet, an average value result of Duke for modular L-series at the critical center. We also establish a refinement. To be precise, the L-value which appears is L(1/2, f)L(1/2,f,χ) (divided by the Petersson norm of f), and the average is over newforms f of prime level N and coefficients a_p(f), with χbeing an odd quadratic Dirichlet character of conductor -D and associated quadratic field K. For any prime p not dividing ND, the asymptotic as N goes to infinity is governed by a measure μ_p, which is the Plancherel …
We study special values of regularized theta lifts at complex multiplication (CM) points. In particular, we show that CM values of Borcherds products can be expressed in terms of finitely many Fourier coefficients of certain harmonic weak Maaß forms of weight one. As it turns out, these coefficients are logarithms of algebraic integers whose prime ideal factorization is determined by special cycles on an arithmetic curve. Our results imply a conjecture of Duke and Li and give a new proof of the modularity of a certain arithmetic generating series of weight one studied by Kudla, Rapoport and Ya…
In this paper, we use regularized theta liftings to construct weak Maass forms weight 1/2 as lifts of weak Maass forms of weight 0. As a special case we give a new proof of some of recent results of Duke, Toth and Imamoglu on cycle integrals of the modular j-invariant and extend these to any congruence subgroup. Moreover, our methods allow us to settle the open question of a geometric interpretation for periods of j along infinite geodesics in the upper half plane. In particular, we give the `central value' of the (non-existing) `L-function' for j. The key to the proofs is the construction of …
In this paper we obtain a weighted average formula for special values of $L$-functions attached to normalized elliptic modular forms of weight $k$ and full level. These results are obtained by studying the pullback of a Siegel Eisenstein series and working out an explicit spectral decomposition.
We prove the non-vanishing of special $L$-values of cuspidal automorphic forms on GL(2) twisted by Hecke characters of prime power orders and totally split prime power conductors. Main ingredients of the proof are estimating the Galois averages of fast convergent series expressions of special $L$-values and considering Shintani cone decomposition.
We use a relative trace formula on GL(2) to compute a sum of twisted modular L-functions anywhere in the critical strip, weighted by a Fourier coefficient and a Hecke eigenvalue. When the weight k or level N is sufficiently large, the sum is nonzero. Specializing to the central point, we show in some cases that the resulting bound for the average is as good as that predicted by the Lindelof hypothesis in the k and N aspects.
Let $μ$ be the Möbius function and let $k \geq 1$. We prove that the Gowers $U^k$-norm of $μ$ restricted to progressions $\{n \leq X: n\equiv a_q\pmod{q}\}$ is $o(1)$ on average over $q\leq X^{1/2-σ}$ for any $σ> 0$, where $a_q\pmod{q}$ is an arbitrary residue class with $(a_q,q) = 1$. This generalizes the Bombieri-Vinogradov inequality for $μ$, which corresponds to the special case $k=1$.
We establish a connection between the ratios conjecture for the Riemann zeta-function and a conjecture concerning correlations of convolutions of Möbius and divisor functions. Specifically, we prove that the ratios conjecture and an arithmetic correlations conjecture imply the same result. This provides new support for the ratios conjecture, which previously had been motivated by analogy with formulae in random matrix theory and by a heuristic recipe. Our main theorem generalises a recent calculation pertaining to the special case of two-over-two ratios.
We obtain a second moment formula for the L-series of holomorphic cusp forms, averaged over twists by Dirichlet characters modulo a fixed conductor Q. The estimate obtained has no restrictions on Q, with an error term that has a close to optimal power savings in the exponent. However, one of the contributions to the main term is a special value of a shifted double Dirichlet series. We show that this special value is small on average, and obtain a corresponding estimate for a mean value of the second moment over Q. This mean value is non-zero even when applied to a product of two distinct L-ser…
Given an elliptic curve E over a function field K=Q(T_1,...,T_n), we study the behavior of the canonical height ^h_(E_w) of the specialized elliptic curve E_w with respect to the height of w in Q^n. In this paper, we prove that there exists a uniform non-zero lower bound for the average of the quotient ^h_(E_w)(P_w)/h(w) for all non-torsion P in E(K).
Let $\mathfrak{O}$ be a compact discrete valuation ring of characteristic zero. Given a module $M$ of matrices over $\mathfrak{O}$, we study the generating function encoding the average sizes of the kernels of the elements of $M$ over finite quotients of $\mathfrak{O}$. We prove rationality and establish fundamental properties of these generating functions and determine them explicitly for various natural families of modules $M$. Using $p$-adic Lie theory, we then show that special cases of these generating functions enumerate orbits and conjugacy classes of suitable linear pro-$p$ groups.
