Given a compact symplectic manifold M with the Hamiltonian action of a torus T, let zero be a regular value of the moment map, and M_0 the symplectic reduction at zero. Denote by κ_0 the Kirwan map H^*_T(M)-> H^*(M_0). For an equivariant cohomology class η\in H^*_T(M) we present new localization formulas which express \int_{M_0} κ_0(η) as sums of certain integrals over the connected components of the fixed point set M^T. To produce such a formula we apply a residue operation to the Atiyah-Bott-Berline-Vergne localization formula for an equivariant form on the symplectic cut of M with respect to a certain cone, and then, if necessary, iterate this process using other cones. When all cones used to produce the formula are one-dimensional we recover, as a special case, the localization formula of Guillemin and Kalkman. Using similar ideas, for a special choice of the cone (whose dimension is equal to that of T) we give a new proof of the Jeffrey-Kirwan localization formula.
By applying the symplectic cutting operation to cotangent bundles, one can construct a large number of interesting symplectic cones. In this paper we show how to attach algebras of pseudodifferential operators to such cones and describe the symbolic properties of the algebras.
In this article we extend cutting and blowing up to the nonrational symplectic toric setting. This entails the possibility of cutting and blowing up for symplectic toric manifolds and orbifolds in nonrational directions.
The ``symplectic cut'' construction [Lerman] produces two symplectic orbifolds $C_-$ and $C_+$ from a symplectic manifold $M$ with a Hamiltonian circle action. We compute the rational cohomology ring of $C_+$ in terms of those of $M$ and $C_-$.
The recently proposed projection quantization, which is a method to quantize particular subspaces of systems with known quantum theory, is shown to yield a genuine quantization in several cases. This may be inferred from exact results established within symplectic cutting.
A symplectic cut of a manifold M with a Hamiltonian circle action is a symplectic quotient of M x C. If M is Kaehler then, since C is Kaehler, the cut space is Kaehler as well. The symplectic structure on the cut is well understood. In this paper we describe the complex structure (and hence the metric) on the cut. We then generalize the construction to the case where M has a torus action and C is replaced by a toric Kaehler manifold.
We describe a contact analog of the symplectic cut construction. As an application we show that the group of contactomorphisms for a particular overtwisted contact structure on the three sphere contains countably many nonconjugate two tori.
We consider Lagrangian Floer cohomology for a pair of Lagrangian submanifolds in a symplectic manifold M. Suppose that M carries a symplectic involution, which preserves both submanifolds. Under various topological hypotheses, we prove a localization theorem for Floer cohomology, which implies a Smith-type inequality for the Floer cohomology groups in M and its fixed point set. Two applications to symplectic Khovanov cohomology are included.
This article is a result of the AIM workshop on Moment Maps and Surjectivity in Various Geometries (August 9 - 13, 2004) organized by T.Holm, E.Lerman and S.Tolman. At that workshop I was introduced to the work of T.Hausel and N.Proudfoot on hyperkahler quotients [HP]. One interesting feature of their article is that they consider integrals of equivariant forms over non-compact symplectic manifolds which do not converge, so they formally {\em define} these integrals as sums over the zeroes of vector fields, as in the Berline-Vergne localization formula. In this article we introduce a geometric…
There are two types of $J$-holomorphic spheres in a symplectic manifold invariant under an anti-symplectic involution: those that have a fixed point locus and those that do not. The former are described by moduli spaces of $J$-holomorphic disks, which are well studied in the literature. In this paper, we first study moduli spaces describing the latter and then combine the two types of moduli spaces to get a well-defined theory of counting real curves of genus 0. We use equivariant localization to show that these invariants (unlike the disk invariants) are essentially the same for the two (stan…
We consider an ``integral'' extension of the classical notion of affine connection providing a correspondence between paths in the manifold and diffeomorphisms of the manifold. These path-diffeomorphisms are a generalization of parallel translations along paths via the connection. In this way, one can translate nonanalytic functions and distributions rather than tangent vectors. We describe the integral holonomy and the integral curvature. On the symplectic or quantum level this construction makes up the symplectic or quantum paths, as well quantum connection, quantum curvature and quantum hol…
Localization is a topological technique that allows us to make global equivariant computations in terms of local data at the fixed points. For example, we may compute a global integral by summing integrals at each of the fixed points. Or, if we know that the global integral is zero, we conclude that the sum of the local integrals is zero. This often turns topological questions into combinatorial ones and vice versa. This expository article features several instances of localization that occur at the crossroads of symplectic and algebraic geometry on the one hand, and combinatorics and represen…
We present a K-theoritic approach to the Guillemin-Sternberg conjecture, about the commutativity of geometric quantization and symplectic reduction, which was proved by Meinrenken and Tian-Zhang. Besides providing a new proof of this conjecture for the full non-abelian group action case, our methods lead to a generalisation for compact Lie group actions on manifolds that are not symplectic. Instead, these manifolds carry an invariant almost complex structure and an abstract moment map.
We define a local Riemann-Roch number for an open symplectic manifold when a complete integrable system without Bohr-Sommerfeld fiber is provided on its end. In particular when a structure of a singular Lagrangian fibration is given on a closed symplectic manifold, its Riemann-Roch number is described as the sum of the number of nonsingular Bohr-Sommerfeld fibers and a contribution of the singular fibers. A key step of the proof is formally explained as a version of Witten's deformation applied to a Hilbert bundle.
We consider the symplectic vortex equations for a linear Hamiltonian torus action. We show that the associated genus zero moduli space itself is homotopic (in the sense of a homotopy of regular G-moduli problems) to a toric manifold with combinatorial data directly obtained from the original torus action. This allows to view the wall crossing formula of Cieliebak and Salamon for the computation of vortex invariants as a consequence of a generalized Jeffrey-Kirwan localization formula for integrals over symplectic quotients.
The aim of this paper is to describe how to obtain residue-type formulas for push-forwards in equivariant cohomology, using the Jeffrey-Kirwan nonabelian localization theorem and the related result of Guillemin and Kalkman. This paper relates the description of equivariant push-forwards for homogeneous spaces of classical Lie groups with the action of the maximal torus with symplectic geometry, using the example of projective spaces and classical Grassmannians.
We use symplectic cobordism, and the localization result of Ginzburg, Guillemin, and Karshon, to find a wall-crossing formula for the signature of regular symplectic quotients of Hamiltonian torus actions. The formula is recursive, depending ultimately on fixed point data. In the case of a circle action, we obtain a formula for the signature of singular quotients as well. We also show how formulas for the Poincare polynomial and the Euler characteristic (equivalent to those of Kirwan) can be expressed in the same recursive manner.
Chern-Simons theory on a closed contact three-manifold is studied when the Lie group for gauge transformations is compact, connected and abelian. A rigorous definition of an abelian Chern-Simons partition function is derived using the Faddeev-Popov gauge fixing method. A symplectic abelian Chern-Simons partition function is also derived using the technique of non-abelian localization. This physically identifies the symplectic abelian partition function with the abelian Chern-Simons partition function as rigorous topological three-manifold invariants. This study leads to a natural identificatio…
Consider a Hamiltonian action of a compact connected Lie group $G$ on an aspherical symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$. Under suitable assumptions, counting gauge equivalence classes of (symplectic) vortices on the plane $R^2$ conjecturally gives rise to a quantum deformation $Qk_G$ of the Kirwan map. This is the second of a series of articles, whose goal is to define $Qk_G$ rigorously. The main result is that every sequence of vortices with uniformly bounded energies has a subsequence that converges to a genus 0 stable map of vortices on $R^2$ and holomorphic spheres in the symplectic quotient. Pote…
The main contribution of this paper is a generalization of several previous localization theories in equivariant symplectic geometry, including the classical Atiyah-Bott/Berline-Vergne localization theorem, as well as many cases of the localization via the norm-square of the momentum map as initiated and developed by Witten, Paradan, and Woodward. Our version unifies and generalizes these theories by using noncompact cobordisms as in previous work of Guillemin, Ginzburg, and Karshon, and by introducing a more flexible notion of `polarization' than in previous theories. Our localization formula…
In this article, we will discuss a localization formulas of equivariant cohomology about two Killing vector fields on the set of zero points ${\rm{Zero}}(X_{M}-\sqrt{-1}Y_{M})=\{x\in M \mid |Y_{M}(x)|=|X_{M}(x)|=0 \}.$ As application, we use it to get formulas about characteristic numbers and to get a Duistermaat-Heckman type formula on symplectic manifold.
For a finite-dimensional (but possibly noncompact) symplectic manifold with a compact group acting with a proper moment map, we show that the square of the moment map is an equivariantly perfect Morse function in the sense of Kirwan, and that the set of critical points of the square of the moment map is a countable discrete union of compact sets. We show that certain integrals of equivariant cohomology classes localizes as a sum of contributions from these compact critical sets, and we bound the contribution from each critical set. In the case (1) that the contribution from higher critical set…
We extend the Marsden-Weinstein-Meyer symplectic reduction theorem to the setting of multisymplectic manifolds. In this context, we investigate the dependence of the reduced space on the reduction parameters. With respect to a distinguished class of multisymplectic moment maps, an exact stationary phase approximation and nonabelian localization theorem are also obtained.
We study the fix point components of the big torus action on the moduli space of stable maps into a smooth projective toric variety, and apply Graber and Pandharipande's localization formula for the virtual fundamental class to obtain an explicit formula for the Gromov-Witten invariants of toric varieties. Using this formula we compute all genus-0 3-point invariants of the Fano manifold $¶(Ø_{¶^2}(2) \oplus 1)$, and we show for the (non-Fano) manifold $¶(Ø_{¶^2}(3) \oplus 1)$ that its quantum cohomology ring does not correspond to Batyrev's ring defined in \cite{bat93}.
Consider a Hamiltonian action of a compact connected Lie group $G$ on an aspherical symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$. Under some assumptions on $(M,ω)$ and the action, D. A. Salamon conjectured that counting gauge equivalence classes of symplectic vortices on the plane $R^2$ gives rise to a quantum deformation $Qκ_G$ of the Kirwan map. This article is the first of three, whose goal is to define $Qκ_G$ rigorously. Its main result is that the vertical differential of the vortex equations over $R^2$ (at the level of gauge equivalence) is a Fredholm operator of a specified index. Potentially, the map $…
We generalize the Jeffrey-Kirwan localization theorem for non-compact symplectic and hyperKahler quotients. Similarly to the circle compact integration of Hausel and Proudfoot we define equivariant integrals on non-compact manifolds using the Atiyah-Bott-Berline-Vergne localization formula as formal definition. We introduce a so called equivariant Jeffrey-Kirwan residue and we show that it shares similar properties as the usual one. Our localization formula has the same structure as the usual Jeffrey-Kirwan formula, but it uses formal integration and equivariant residue. We also give a version…
The study of fixed points is a classical subject in geometry and dynamics. If the circle acts in a Hamiltonian fashion on a compact symplectic manifold M, then it is classically known that there are at least 1 + dim(M)/2 fixed points; this follows from Morse theory for the momentum map of the action. In this paper we use Atiyah-Bott-Berline-Vergne (ABBV) localization in equivariant cohomology to prove that this conclusion also holds for symplectic circle actions with non-empty fixed sets, as long as the Chern class map is somewhere injective -- the Chern class map assigns to a fixed point the …
Motivated by Nekrasov's instanton counting, we discuss a method for calculating equivariant volumes of non-compact quotients in symplectic and hyper-Kähler geometry by means of the Jeffrey-Kirwan residue-formula of non-abelian localization. In order to overcome the non-compactness, we use varying symplectic cuts to reduce the problem to a compact setting, and study what happens in the limit that recovers the original problem. We implement this method for the ADHM construction of the moduli spaces of framed Yang-Mills instantons on $\R^{4}$ and rederive the formulas for the equivariant volumes …
We prove a quantum version of the localization formula of Witten that relates invariants of a git quotient with the equivariant invariants of the action. Using the formula we prove a quantum version of an abelianization formula of S. Martin relating invariants of geometric invariant theory quotients by a group and its maximal torus, conjectured by Bertram, Ciocan-Fontanine, and Kim. By similar techniques we prove a quantum Lefschetz principle for holomorphic symplectic reductions. As an application, we give a formula for the fundamental solution to the quantum differential equation (qde) for t…
