Entropy of meromorphic maps and dynamics of birational maps

We study the dynamics of meromorphic maps for a compact Kaehler manifold X. More precisely, we give a simple criterion that allows us to produce a measure of maximal entropy. We can apply this result to bound the Lyapunov exponents. Then, we study the particular case of a family of generic birational maps of P^k for which we construct the Green currents and the equilibrium measure. We use for that the theory of super-potentials. Dynamics of a two parameter family of plane birational maps: maximal entropy

We consider the real dynamics of a two parameter family of plane birational maps, focusing especially on an open subset of parameter space on which the real and complex dynamics are in close agreement. On the complex side, we find a rational complex surface to which the maps extend in a well-defined fashion and then calculate the induced action on the Picard group of the surface. On the complex dynamics of birational surface maps defined over number fields

We show that any birational selfmap of a complex projective surface that has dynamical degree greater than one and is defined over a number field automatically satisfies the Bedford-Diller energy condition after a suitable birational conjugacy. As a consequence, the complex dynamics of the map is well-behaved. We also show that there is a well-defined canonical height function.

Birational cobordisms and factorization of birational maps

In this paper we develop a Morse-like theory in order to decompose birational maps and morphisms of smooth projective varieties defined over a field of characteristic zero into more elementary steps which are locally étale isomorphic to equivariant flips, blow-ups and blow-downs of toric varieties. We consider two (densely defined) involutions on the space of $q\times q$ matrices; $I(x_{ij})$ is the matrix inverse of $(x_{ij})$, and $J(x_{ij})$ is the matrix whose $ij$th entry is the reciprocal $x_{ij}^{-1}$. Let $K=I\circ J$. The set ${\cal SC}_q$ of symmetric, cyclic matrices is invariant under $K$. In this paper, we determine the degrees of the iterates $K^n=K\circ...\circ K$ restricted to ${\cal SC}_q$.

On the Degree Growth of Birational Mappings in Higher Dimension

Let $f$ be a birational map of ${\bf C}^d$, and consider the degree complexity, or asymptotic degree growth rate $δ(f)=\lim_{n\to\infty}({\rm deg}(f^n))^{1/n}$. We introduce a family of elementary maps, which have the form $f=L\circ J$, where $L$ is (invertible) linear, and $J(x_1,...,x_d)=(x_1^{-1},...,x_d^{-1})$. We develop a method of regularization and show how it can be used to compute $δ$ for an elementary map.

Torification and Factorization of Birational Maps

Building on the work of the fourth author in math.AG/9904074, we prove the weak factorization conjecture for birational maps in characteristic zero: a birational map between complete nonsingular varieties over an algebraically closed field K of characteristic zero is a composite of blowings up and blowings down with smooth centers. Such a factorization exists which is functorial with respect to absolute isomorphisms, and compatible with a normal crossings divisor. The same holds for algebraic and analytic spaces. Dynamics of (Pseudo) Automorphisms of 3-space: Periodicity versus positive entropy

We study the iterative behavior of the family of 3-step linear fractional recurrences and the family of birational maps they define. We determine all the possible periodicities within this family or, equivalently, the birational maps of finite order. This family also contains pseudo-automorphisms of infinite order. One such family consists of completely integrable maps, and another family consists of maps of positive entropy. Both of these families have invariant families of $K3$ surfaces.
