Given the symmetric operator $A_N$ obtained by restricting the self-adjoint operator $A$ to $N$, a linear dense set, closed with respect to the graph norm, we determine a convenient boundary triple for the adjoint $A_N^*$ and the corresponding Weyl function. These objects provide us with the self-adjoint extensions of $A_N$ and their resolvents.
We define functions of noncommuting self-adjoint operators with the help of double operator integrals. We are studying the problem to find conditions on a function $f$ on ${\Bbb R}^2$, for which the map $(A,B)\mapsto f(A,B)$ is Lipschitz in the operator norm and in Schatten--von Neumann norms $\boldsymbol{S}_p$. It turns out that for functions $f$ in the Besov class $B_{\infty,1}^1({\Bbb R}^2)$, the above map is Lipschitz in the $\boldsymbol{S}_p$ norm for $p\in[1,2]$. However, it is not Lipschitz in the operator norm, nor in the $\boldsymbol{S}_p$ norm for $p>2$. The main tool is triple opera…
Let $A$ be a densely defined simple symmetric operator in $\gH$, let $Π=\bt$ be a boundary triplet for $A^*$ and let $M(\cd)$ be the corresponding Weyl function. It is known that the Weyl function $M(\cd)$ determines the boundary triplet $Π$, in particular, the pair ${A,A_0}$, where $A_0:= A^*\lceil\ker\G_0 (= A^*_0)$, uniquely up to unitary similarity. At the same time the Weyl function corresponding to a boundary triplet for a dual pair of operators defines it uniquely only up to weak similarity. In this paper we consider symmetric dual pairs ${A,A}$ generated by $A\subset A^*$ and special b…
With a closed symmetric operator $A$ in a Hilbert space ${\mathfrak H}$ a triple $Π=\{{\mathcal H},Γ_0,Γ_1\}$ of a Hilbert space ${\mathcal H}$ and two abstract trace operators $Γ_0$ and $Γ_1$ from $A^*$ to ${\mathcal H}$ is called a generalized boundary triple for $A^*$ if an abstract analogue of the second Green's formula holds. Various classes of generalized boundary triples are introduced and corresponding Weyl functions $M$ are investigated. The most important ones for applications are specific classes of (essentially) unitary boundary triples which guarantee that the Weyl functions of bo…
In this note semibounded self-adjoint extensions of symmetric operators are investigated with the help of the abstract notion of quasi boundary triples and their Weyl functions. The main purpose is to provide new sufficient conditions on the parameters in the boundary space to induce self-adjoint realizations, and to relate the decay of the Weyl function to estimates on the lower bound of the spectrum. The abstract results are illustrated with uniformly elliptic second order PDEs on domains with non-compact boundaries.
Weyl-von Neumann Theorem asserts that two bounded self-adjoint operators $A,B$ on a Hilbert space $H$ are unitarily equivalent modulo compacts, i.e., $uAu^*+K=B$ for some unitary $u\in \mathcal{U}(H)$ and compact self-adjoint operator $K$, if and only if $A$ and $B$ have the same essential spectra: $σ_{\rm{ess}}(A)=σ_{\rm{ess}}(B)$. In this paper we consider to what extent the above Weyl-von Neumann's result can(not) be extended to unbounded operators using descriptive set theory. We show that if $H$ is separable infinite-dimensional, this equivalence relation for bounded self-adjoin operators…
In this paper we study properties of functions of triples of not necessarily commuting self-adjoint operators. The main result of the paper shows that unlike in the case of functions of pairs of self-adjoint operators there is no Lipschitz type estimates in the trace norm for arbitrary functions in the Besov class $B_{\infty,1}^1({\Bbb R}^3)$.
A famous theorem due to Weyl and von Neumann asserts that two bounded self-adjoint operators are unitarily equivalent modulo the compacts, if and only if their essential spectrum agree. The above theorem does not hold for unbounded operators. Nevertheless, there exist closed subsets $M$ of $\mathbb{R}$ on which the Weyl--von Neumann Theorem hold: all (not necessarily bounded) self-adjoint operators with essential spectrum $M$ are unitarily equivalent modulo the compacts. In this paper, we determine exactly which $M$ satisfies this property.
We consider a certain class of Herglotz-Nevanlinna matrix-valued functions which can be realized as the Weyl-Titchmarsh matrix-valued function of some symmetric operator and its self-adjoint extension. New properties of Weyl -Titchmarsh matrix-valued functions as well as a new version of the functional model in such realizations are presented. In the case of periodic Herglotz-Nevanlinna matrix-valued functions we provide a complete characterization of their realizations in terms of the corresponding functional model. We also obtain properties of a symmetric operator and its self-adjoint extens…
Exceptional Laguerre-type differential expressions make up an infinite class of Schrödinger operators having rational potentials and one limit-circle endpoint. In this manuscript, the spectrum of all self-adjoint extensions for a general exceptional Laguerre-type differential expression is given in terms of the Darboux transformations which relate the expression to the classical Laguerre differential expression. The spectrum is extracted from an explicit Weyl $m$-function, up to a sign. The construction relies primarily on two tools: boundary triples, which parameterize the self-adjoint extens…
We study general (not necessarily Hamiltonian) first-order symmetric systems $J y'(t)-B(t)y(t)=\D(t) f(t)$ on an interval $\cI=[a,b> $ with the regular endpoint $a$. It is assumed that the deficiency indices $n_\pm(\Tmi)$ of the minimal relation $\Tmi$ in $\LI$ satisfy $n_-(\Tmi)\leq n_+(\Tmi)$. By using a Nevanlinna boundary parameter $τ=τ(ł)$ at the singular endpoint $b$ we define self-adjoint and $ł$-depending Nevanlinna boundary conditions which are analogs of separated self-adjoint boundary conditions for Hamiltonian systems. With a boundary value problem involving such conditions we asso…
The abstract theory of boundary triples is applied to the classical Jacobi differential operator and its powers in order to obtain the Weyl $m$-function for several self-adjoint extensions with interesting boundary conditions: separated, periodic and those that yield the Friedrichs extension. These matrix-valued Nevanlinna--Herglotz $m$-functions are, to the best knowledge of the author, the first explicit examples to stem from singular higher-order differential equations. The creation of the boundary triples involves taking pieces, determined in a previous paper, of the principal and non-prin…
We study general (not necessarily Hamiltonian) first-order symmetric systems $J y'(t)-B(t)y(t)=\D(t) f(t)$ on an interval $[a,b> $ with the regular endpoint $a$. The deficiency indices $n_\pm$ of the corresponding minimal relation $\Tmi$ may be arbitrary (possibly unequal). Our approach is based on the concept of a decomposing boundary triplet, which enables one to parametrize various classes of extensions of $\Tmi$ (self-adjoint, $m$-dissipative, etc.) in terms of boundary conditions imposed on regular and singular values of a function $y\in \dom \tma$ at the endpoints $a$ and $b$ respectivel…
In this paper we study properties of functions of triples of not necessarily commuting self-adjoint operators. The main result of the paper shows that unlike in the case of functions of pairs of self-adjoint operators there is no Lipschitz type estimates in any Schatten--von Neumann norm $\boldsymbol S_p$, $1\le p\le\infty$, for arbitrary functions in the Besov class $B_{\infty,1}^1({\Bbb R}^3)$. In other words, we prove that for $p\in[1,\infty]$, there is no constant $K>0$ such that the inequality \begin{align*} \|f(A_1,B_1,C_1)&-f(A_2,B_2,C_2)\|_{\boldsymbol S_p}\\[.1cm] &\le K\|f\|_{B_{\inf…
We develop the machinery of boundary triplets for one-dimensional operators generated by formally self-adjoint quasi-differential expression of arbitrary order on a finite interval. The technique are then used to describe all maximal dissipative, accumulative and self-adjoint extensions of the associated minimal operator and its generalized resolvents in terms of the boundary conditions. Some specific classes are considered in greater detail.
We generalize the notion of Lagrangian subspaces to self-orthogonal subspaces with respect to a (skew-)symmetric form, thus characterizing (skew-)self-adjoint and unitary operators by means of self-ortho-gonal subspaces. By orthogonality preserving mappings, these characterizations can be transferred to abstract boundary value spaces of (skew-)symmetric operators. Introducing the notion of boundary systems we then present a unified treatment of different versions of boundary triples and related concepts treated in the literature. The application of the abstract results yields a description of …
Let $(\mathfrak{L},Γ)$ be an isometric boundary pair associated with a closed symmetric linear relation $T$ in a Krein space $\mathfrak{H}$. Let $M_Γ$ be the Weyl family corresponding to $(\mathfrak{L},Γ)$. We cope with two main topics. First, since $M_Γ$ need not be (generalized) Nevanlinna, the characterization of the closure and the adjoint of a linear relation $M_Γ(z)$, for some $z\in\mathbb{C}\smallsetminus\mathbb{R}$, becomes a nontrivial task. Regarding $M_Γ(z)$ as the (Shmul'yan) transform of $zI$ induced by $Γ$, we give conditions for the equality in $\overline{M_Γ(z)}\subseteq\overli…
Operator-valued $Q$-functions for special pairs of nonnegative selfadjoint extensions of nonnegative not necessarily densely defined operators are defined and their analytical properties are studied. It is shown that the Kre\uın-Ovcharenko statement announced in \cite{KrO2} is valid only for $Q$-functions of densely defined symmetric operators with finite deficiency indices. A general class of boundary triplets for a densely defined nonnegative operator is constructed such that the corresponding Weyl functions are of Kre\uın-Ovcharenko type.
An adjoint pair is a pair of densely defined linear operators $A, B$ on a Hilbert space such that $\langle Ax,y\rangle=\langle x,By\rangle$ for $x\in \cD(A), y \in \cD(B).$ We consider adjoint pairs for which $0$ is a regular point for both operators and associate a boundary triplet to such an adjoint pair. Proper extensions of the operator $B$ are in one-to-one correspondence $T_\cC\leftrightarrow \cC $ to closed subspaces $\cC$ of $\cN(A^*)\oplus\cN(B^*)$. In the case when $B$ is formally normal and $\cD(A)=\cD(B)$, the normal operators $T_\cC$ are characterized. Next we assume that $B$ has …
The classical Weyl-von Neumann theorem states that for any self-adjoint operator $A$ in a separable Hilbert space $\mathfrak H$ there exists a (non-unique) Hilbert-Schmidt operator $C = C^*$ such that the perturbed operator $A+C$ has purely point spectrum. We are interesting whether this result remains valid for non-additive perturbations by considering self-adjoint extensions of a given densely defined symmetric operator $A$ in $\mathfrak H$ and fixing an extension $A_0 = A_0^*$. We show that for a wide class of symmetric operators the absolutely continuous parts of extensions $\widetilde A =…
We study the asymptotic behaviour of the eigenvalue counting function for self-adjoint elliptic linear operators defined through classical weighted symbols of order $(1,1)$, on an asymptotically Euclidean manifold. We first prove a two term Weyl formula, improving previously known remainder estimates. Subsequently, we show that under a geometric assumption on the Hamiltonian flow at infinity there is a refined Weyl asymptotics with three terms. The proof of the theorem uses a careful analysis of the flow behaviour in the corner component of the boundary of the double compactification of the co…
We give a simple criterion so that a countable infinite direct sum of trace (evaluation) maps is a trace map. An application to the theory of self-adjoint extensions of direct sums of symmetric operators is provided; this gives an alternative approach to results recently obtained by Malamud-Neidhardt and Kostenko-Malamud using regularized direct sums of boundary triplets.
We consider symmetric operators of the form $S := A\otimes I_{\mathfrak T} + I_{\mathfrak H} \otimes T$ where $A$ is symmetric and $T = T^*$ is (in general) unbounded. Such operators naturally arise in problems of simulating point contacts to reservoirs. We construct a boundary triplet $Π_S$ for $S^*$ preserving the tensor structure. The corresponding $γ$-field and Weyl function are expressed by means of the $γ$-field and Weyl function corresponding to the boundary triplet $Π_A$ for $A^*$ and the spectral measure of $T$. Applications to 1-D Schrödinger and Dirac operators are given. A model of…
The spectral problem for self-adjoint extensions is studied using the machinery of boundary triplets. For a class of symmetric operators having Weyl functions of a special type we calculate explicitly the spectral projections in the form of operator-valued integrals. This allows one to give a constructive proof of the fact that, in certain intervals, the resulting self-adjoint extensions are unitarily equivalent to a certain parameterizing operator acting in a smaller space, and one is able to provide an explicit form the associated unitary transform. Applications to differential operators on …
We consider the Schrödinger operators $H_V=-Δ_g+V$ with singular potentials $V$ on general $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds and study whether various forms of pointwise Weyl law remain valid under this pertubation. We prove that the pointwise Weyl law holds for potentials in the Kato class, which is the minimal assumption to ensure that $H_V$ is essentially self-adjoint and bounded from below or has favorable heat kernel bounds. Moreover, we show that the pointwise Weyl law with the standard sharp error term $O(λ^{n-1})$ holds for potentials in $L^n(M)$.
In this article we discuss a few spectral properties of a paranormal closed operator (not necessarily bounded) defined in a Hilbert space. This class contains closed symmetric operators. First we show that the spectrum of such an operator is non empty. Next, we give a characterization of closed range operators in terms of the spectrum. Using these results we prove the Weyl's theorem: if $T$ is a densely defined closed, paranormal operator, then $σ(T)\setminusω(T)=π_{00}(T)$, where $σ(T), ω(T)$ and $π_{00}(T)$ denote the spectrum, Weyl spectrum and the set of all isolated eigenvalues with finit…
We consider a class of self-adjoint extensions using the boundary triple technique. Assuming that the associated Weyl function has the special form $M(z)=\big(m(z)\Id-T\big) n(z)^{-1}$ with a bounded self-adjoint operator $T$ and scalar functions $m,n$ we show that there exists a class of boundary conditions such that the spectral problem for the associated self-adjoint extensions in gaps of a certain reference operator admits a unitary reduction to the spectral problem for $T$. As a motivating example we consider differential operators on equilateral metric graphs, and we describe a class of …
Let $A$ and $B$ be almost commuting (i.e, $AB-BA\in\bS_1$) self-adjoint operators. We construct a functional calculus $\f\mapsto\f(A,B)$ for $\f$ in the Besov class $B_{\be,1}^1(\R^2)$. This functional calculus is linear, the operators $\f(A,B)$ and $ψ(A,B)$ almost commute for $\f,\,ψ\in B_{\be,1}^1(\R^2)$, $\f(A,B)=u(A)v(B)$ whenever $\f(s,t)=u(s)v(t)$, and the Helton--Howe trace formula holds. The main tool is triple operator integrals.
We consider the interior transmission eigenvalue (ITE) problem, which arises when scattering by inhomogeneous media is studied. The ITE problem is not self-adjoint. We show that positive ITEs are observable together with plus or minus signs that are defined by the direction of motion of the corresponding eigenvalues of the scattering matrix (when the latter approach {\bf$z=1$)}. We obtain a Weyl type formula for the counting function of positive ITEs, which are taken together with ascribed signs.
We perform the spectral analysis of a family of Jacobi operators $J(α)$ depending on a complex parameter $α$. If $|α|\neq1$ the spectrum of $J(α)$ is discrete and formulas for eigenvalues and eigenvectors are established in terms of elliptic integrals and Jacobian elliptic functions. If $|α|=1$, $α\neq \pm 1$, the essential spectrum of $J(α)$ covers the entire complex plane. In addition, a formula for the Weyl $m$-function as well as the asymptotic expansions of solutions of the difference equation corresponding to $J(α)$ are obtained. Finally, the completeness of eigenvectors and Rodriguez-li…
