The notions of convexity and convex polytopes are introduced in the setting of tropical geometry. Combinatorial types of tropical polytopes are shown to be in bijection with regular triangulations of products of two simplices. Applications to phylogenetic trees are discussed. Theorem 29 and Corollary 30 in the paper, relating tropical polytopes to injective hulls, are incorrect. See the erratum at http://www.math.uiuc.edu/documenta/vol-09/vol-09-eng.html .

Tropical Convexity via Cellular Resolutions

The tropical convex hull of a finite set of points in tropical projective space has a natural structure of a cellular free resolution. Therefore, methods from computational commutative algebra can be used to compute tropical convex hulls. Tropical cyclic polytopes are also presented.

Affine Buildings and Tropical Convexity

The notion of convexity in tropical geometry is closely related to notions of convexity in the theory of affine buildings. We explore this relationship from a combinatorial and computational perspective. Our results include a convex hull algorithm for the Bruhat--Tits building of SL$_d(K)$ and techniques for computing with apartments and membranes. While the original inspiration was the work of Dress and Terhalle in phylogenetics, and of Faltings, Kapranov, Keel and Tevelev in algebraic geometry, our tropical algorithms will also be applicable to problems in other fields of mathematics.

Tropical Convex Hull Computations

This is a survey on tropical polytopes from the combinatorial point of view and with a focus on algorithms. Tropical convexity is interesting because it relates a number of combinatorial concepts including ordinary convexity, monomial ideals, subdivisions of products of simplices, matroid theory, finite metric spaces, and the tropical Grassmannians. The relationship between these topics is explained via one running example throughout the whole paper. The final section explains how the new version 2.9.4 of the software system polymake can be used to compute with tropical polytopes.

Tropical convexity over max-min semiring

This is a survey on an analogue of tropical convexity developed over the max-min semiring, starting with the descriptions of max-min segments, semispaces, hyperplanes and an account of separation and non-separation results based on semispaces. There are some new results. In particular, we give new "colorful" extensions of the max-min Caratheodory theorem. In the end of the paper, we list some consequences of the topological Radon and Tverberg theorems (like Helly and Centerpoint theorems), valid over a more general class of max-T semirings, where multiplication is a triangular norm.

Convexity in Tree Spaces

We study the geometry of metrics and convexity structures on the space of phylogenetic trees, which is here realized as the tropical linear space of all \ ultrametrics. The ${\rm CAT}(0)$-metric of Billera-Holmes-Vogtman arises from the theory of orthant spaces. While its geodesics can be computed by the Owen-Provan algorithm, geodesic triangles are complicated. We show that the dimension of such a triangle can be arbitrarily high. Tropical convexity and the tropical metric behave better. They exhibit properties desirable for geometric statistics, such as geodesics of small depth.

Convexity of tropical polytopes

We study the relationship between min-plus, max-plus and Euclidean convexity for subsets of $\mathbb{R}^n$. We introduce a construction which associates to any max-plus convex set with compact projectivisation a canonical matrix called its dominator. The dominator is a Kleene star whose max-plus column space is the min-plus convex hull of the original set. We apply this to show that a set which is any two of (i) a max-plus polytope, (ii) a min-plus polytope and (iii) a Euclidean polytope must also be the third. On the dimension of max-min convex sets

We introduce a notion of dimension of max-min convex sets, following the approach of tropical convexity. We introduce a max-min analogue of the tropical rank of a matrix and show that it is equal to the dimension of the associated polytope. We describe the relation between this rank and the notion of strong regularity in max-min algebra, which is traditionally defined in terms of unique solvability of linear systems and trapezoidal property.

On tropical Kleene star matrices and alcoved polytopes

In this paper we give a short, elementary proof of a known result in tropical mathematics, by which the convexity of the column span of a zero--diagonal real matrix $A$ is characterized by $A$ being a Kleene star. We give applications to alcoved polytopes, using normal idempotent matrices (which form a subclass of Kleene stars). For a normal matrix we define a norm and show that this is the radius of a hyperplane section of its tropical span.

A tropical isoperimetric inequality

We introduce tropical analogues of the notion of volume of polytopes, leading to a tropical version of the (discrete) classical isoperimetric inequality. The planar case is elementary, but a higher-dimensional generalization leads to an interesting class of ordinary convex polytopes, characterizing the equality case in the isoperimetric inequality. This study is motivated by open complexity questions concerning linear optimization and its tropical analogs.

Convexity on Complex Hyperbolic Space

In a Riemannian manifold a regular convex domain is said to be $λ$-convex if its normal curvature at each point is greater than or equal to $λ$. In a Hadamard manifold, the asymptotic behaviour of the quotient $\vol(Ω(t))/\vol(\partialΩ(t))$ for a family of $λ$-convex domains $Ω(t)$ expanding over the whole space has been studied and general bounds for this quotient are known. Estimating the average of functions with convexity properties by means of a new center

Curvature measures and soap bubbles beyond convexity

Extending the celebrated results of Alexandrov (1958) and Korevaar-Ros (1988) for smooth sets, as well as the results of Schneider (1979) and the first author (1999) for arbitrary convex bodies, we obtain for the first time the characterization of the isoperimetric sets of a uniformly convex smooth finite-dimensional normed space (i.e. Wulff shapes) in the non-smooth and non-convex setting, based on the natural geometric condition involving the curvature measures. Reciprocals and Flowers in Convexity

We study new classes of convex bodies and star bodies with unusual properties. First we define the class of reciprocal bodies, which may be viewed as convex bodies of the form "$1/K$". The map $K\mapsto K^\prime$ sending a body to its reciprocal is a duality on the class of reciprocal bodies, and we study its properties. On the role of Convexity in Isoperimetry, Spectral-Gap and Concentration

We show that for convex domains in Euclidean space, Cheeger's isoperimetric inequality, spectral gap of the Neumann Laplacian, exponential concentration of Lipschitz functions, and the a-priori weakest requirement that Lipschitz functions have \emph{arbitrarily slow} uniform tail-decay, are all quantitatively equivalent (to within universal constants, independent of the dimension).
