Multiplicative models for configuration spaces of algebraic varieties

W. Fulton and R. MacPherson described a Sullivan dg-algebra model for the space of n-configurations of labeled points in a smooth compact complex algebraic variety X. I. Kriz then gave a simpler model that depends only on the cohomology ring of X. We construct an even simpler and substantially smaller model for this configuration space. Using this smaller model, we also define another, new dg-algebra model, for the space of n-configurations in the variety X with a point removed. Following an idea of V.G. Drinfel'd, we endow the collection of these new "punctured" models with a simplicial bigraded differential algebra structure.

Euler characteristics of algebraic varieties

This note studies the behavior of Euler characteristics and of intersection homology Euler characterstics under proper morphisms of algebraic (or analytic) varieties. The methods also yield, for algebraic (or analytic) varieties, formulae comparing these two kinds of Euler characteristics. The main results are direct consequences of the calculus of constructible functions and Grothendieck groups of constructible sheaves. Similar formulae for Hodge theoretic invariants of algebraic varieties under morphisms were announced by the first and third authors in \cite{CS1, S}.

Pure homology of algebraic varieties

We show that for a complete complex algebraic variety the pure component of homology coincides with the image of intersection homology. Therefore pure homology is topologically invariant. To obtain slightly more general results we introduce "image homology" for noncomplete varieties.

Spaces of algebraic and continuous maps between real algebraic varieties

We consider the inclusion of the space of algebraic (regular) maps between real algebraic varieties in the space of all continuous maps. For a certain class of real algebraic varieties, which include real projective spaces, it is well known that the space of real algebraic maps is a dense subset of the space of all continuous maps. Let X be a smooth complex algebraic variety. Morgan [Mor78] showed that the rational homotopy type of X is a formal consequence of the differential graded algebra defined by the first term of its weight spectral sequence. In the present work we generalize this result to arbitrary nilpotent complex algebraic varieties (possibly singular and/or non-compact) and to algebraic morphisms between them. Algebraic Topology of Calabi-Yau Threefolds in Toric Varieties

We compute the integral homology (including torsion), the topological K-theory, and the Hodge structure on cohomology of Calabi-Yau threefold hypersurfaces and complete intersections in Gorenstein toric Fano varieties. The methods are purely topological.

Homotopy theory of smooth compactifications of algebraic varieties

In this short note we show that the homotopy category of smooth compactifications of smooth algebraic varieties is equivalent to the homotopy category of smooth varieties over a field of characteristic zero. As an application we show that the functor sending a variety to the p-th step of the Hodge filtration of its complex cohomology is representable in the homotopy category of simplicial presheaves on smooth complex varieties. The main motivation are recent applications of homotopy theory to Deligne-Beilinson cohomology theories.

Hodge genera of algebraic varieties, I

The aim of this paper is to study the behavior of Hodge-theoretic (intersection homology) genera and their associated characteristic classes under proper morphisms of complex algebraic varieties. We obtain formulae that relate (parametrized families of) global invariants of a complex algebraic variety $X$ to such invariants of singularities of proper algebraic maps defined on $X$. Such formulae severely constrain, both topologically and analytically, the singularities of complex maps, even between smooth varieties. Similar results were announced by the first and third author in \cite{CS1, S}.

Uniqueness of the multiplicative cyclotomic trace

Making use of the theory of noncommutative motives, we characterize the topological Dennis trace map as the unique multiplicative natural transformation from algebraic K-theory to topological Hochschild homology (THH) and the cyclotomic trace map as the unique multiplicative lift through topological cyclic homology (TC). Algebraic cobordism and flag varieties

Let $X$ be an algebraic variety over $k$ such that $\bar X=X\otimes_k\bar k$ is cellular. We study torsion elements in the Chow ring $CH^*(X)$ which corresponds to $v_iy$ in the algebraic cobordism $Ω^*(\bar X)$ where $0\not=y\in CH^*(\bar X)/p$ and $v_i$ is the generator of $BP^*$ with $|v_i|=-2(p^i-1).$ In particular, we try to compute $CH^*(X)$ from $Ω^*(\bar X)$ when $X$ are twisted complete flag varieties.
