We prove a topological version of the section conjecture for the profinite completion of the fundamental group of finite CW-complexes equipped with the action of a group of prime order $p$ whose $p$-torsion cohomology can be killed by finite covers. As an application we derive the section conjecture for the real points of a large class of varieties defined over the field of real numbers and the natural analogue of the section conjecture for fixed points of finite group actions on projective curves of positive genus defined over the field of complex numbers.
This note studies the behavior of Euler characteristics and of intersection homology Euler characterstics under proper morphisms of algebraic (or analytic) varieties. The methods also yield, for algebraic (or analytic) varieties, formulae comparing these two kinds of Euler characteristics. The main results are direct consequences of the calculus of constructible functions and Grothendieck groups of constructible sheaves. Similar formulae for Hodge theoretic invariants of algebraic varieties under morphisms were announced by the first and third authors in \cite{CS1, S}.
We show that for a complete complex algebraic variety the pure component of homology coincides with the image of intersection homology. Therefore pure homology is topologically invariant. To obtain slightly more general results we introduce "image homology" for noncomplete varieties.
We consider the inclusion of the space of algebraic (regular) maps between real algebraic varieties in the space of all continuous maps. For a certain class of real algebraic varieties, which include real projective spaces, it is well known that the space of real algebraic maps is a dense subset of the space of all continuous maps. Our first result shows that, for this class of varieties, the inclusion is also a homotopy equivalence. After proving this, we restrict the class of varieties to real projective spaces. In this case, the space of algebraic maps has a ` minimum degree\rq filtration b…
Let X be a smooth complex algebraic variety. Morgan [Mor78] showed that the rational homotopy type of X is a formal consequence of the differential graded algebra defined by the first term of its weight spectral sequence. In the present work we generalize this result to arbitrary nilpotent complex algebraic varieties (possibly singular and/or non-compact) and to algebraic morphisms between them. The result for algebraic morphisms generalizes the Formality Theorem of [DGMS75] for compact Kähler varieties, filling a gap in Morgan's theory concerning functoriality over the rational numbers. As an…
We compute the integral homology (including torsion), the topological K-theory, and the Hodge structure on cohomology of Calabi-Yau threefold hypersurfaces and complete intersections in Gorenstein toric Fano varieties. The methods are purely topological.
In this short note we show that the homotopy category of smooth compactifications of smooth algebraic varieties is equivalent to the homotopy category of smooth varieties over a field of characteristic zero. As an application we show that the functor sending a variety to the p-th step of the Hodge filtration of its complex cohomology is representable in the homotopy category of simplicial presheaves on smooth complex varieties. The main motivation are recent applications of homotopy theory to Deligne-Beilinson cohomology theories.
The aim of this paper is to study the behavior of Hodge-theoretic (intersection homology) genera and their associated characteristic classes under proper morphisms of complex algebraic varieties. We obtain formulae that relate (parametrized families of) global invariants of a complex algebraic variety $X$ to such invariants of singularities of proper algebraic maps defined on $X$. Such formulae severely constrain, both topologically and analytically, the singularities of complex maps, even between smooth varieties. Similar results were announced by the first and third author in \cite{CS1, S}.
In this paper, for any Milnor hypersurface we find the largest dimension of effective algebraic torus actions on it. The proof of the corresponding theorem is based on the computation of the automorphism group for any Milnor hypersurface. We find all generalised Buchstaber-Ray and Ray hypersurfaces that are toric varieties. We compute the Betti numbers of these hypersurfaces and describe their integral singular cohomology rings in terms of the cohomology of the corresponding ambient varieties.
We survey some recent progress in the theory of vector bundles on algebraic varieties and related questions in algebraic K-theory.
For a compact Lie group $G$ with maximal torus $T$, Pittie and Smith showed that the flag variety $G/T$ is always a stably framed boundary. We generalize this to the category of $p$-compact groups, where the geometric argument is replaced by a homotopy theoretic argument showing that the class in the stable homotopy groups of spheres represented by $G/T$ is trivial, even $G$-equivariantly. As an application, we consider an unstable construction of a $G$-space mimicking the adjoint representation sphere of $G$ inspired by work of the second author and Kitchloo. This construction stably and $G$-…
Let $X$ be an algebraic variety over $k$ such that $\bar X=X\otimes_k\bar k$ is cellular. We study torsion elements in the Chow ring $CH^*(X)$ which corresponds to $v_iy$ in the algebraic cobordism $Ω^*(\bar X)$ where $0\not=y\in CH^*(\bar X)/p$ and $v_i$ is the generator of $BP^*$ with $|v_i|=-2(p^i-1).$ In particular, we try to compute $CH^*(X)$ from $Ω^*(\bar X)$ when $X$ are twisted complete flag varieties.
