We investigate a new property for compact Kahler manifolds. Let X be a Kahler manifold of dimension n and let H^{1,1} denote the (1,1) part of its real second cohomology. On this space, we have an degree n form given by cup product. Let K denote the open cone of Kahler classes in H^{1,1}, and K_1 the level set consisting of classes in K on which the n-form takes value one. This is a Riemannian manifold, with tangent space at a given point being the primitive classes of type (1,1), and metric defined via the Hodge Index Theorem. In the Calabi-Yau case (and probably more generally), we conjecture that K_1 has non-positive sectional curvatures. This would place new restrictions on the possible location of the Kahler cone in cohomology, giving potentially useful information as to which differentiable manifolds may support Calabi-Yau structures. The conjecture is motivated by a Mirror Symmetry argument in Section 1. This argument suggests that one should develop a mirror version of the Weil-Petersson theory of complex moduli. The outline of such a theory is described in Sections 2-4, and the conjecture is verified under certain extra assumptions. In Section 5, we investigate in more detail the case when X is a Kahler threefold with h^{1,1} = 3, where we only have one sectional curvature on K_1 to consider. We prove a formula (5.1) relating this curvature to the classical invariants of the ternary cubic form, and we discuss various implications of this formula.
In an earlier work, we investigated some consequences of the existence of a Kähler metric of negative holomorphic sectional curvature on a projective manifold. In the present work, we extend our results to the case of semi-negative (i.e., non-positive) holomorphic sectional curvature. In doing so, we define a new invariant that records the largest codimension of maximal subspaces in the tangent spaces on which the holomorphic sectional curvature vanishes. Using this invariant, we establish lower bounds for the nef dimension and, under certain additional assumptions, for the Kodaira dimension o…
In this paper, with the aim of establishing a structure theorem for a compact Kähler manifold $X$ with semi-positive holomorphic sectional curvature, we study a morphism $ϕ: X \to Y$ to a compact Kähler manifold $Y$ with pseudo-effective canonical bundle. We prove that the morphism $ϕ$ is always smooth (that is, a submersion), the image $Y$ admits a finite etale cover $T \to Y$ by a complex torus $T$, and further that all the fibers are isomorphic when $X$ is projective. Moreover, by applying a modified method to maximal rationally connected fibrations, we show that $X$ is rationally connected…
We generalize a construction of Hitchin to prove that, given any compact Kähler manifold $M$ with positive holomorphic sectional curvature and any holomorphic vector bundle $E$ over $M$, the projectivized vector bundle ${\mathbb P}(E)$ admits a Kähler metric with positive holomorphic sectional curvature.
We construct a canonical Hausdorff complex analytic moduli space of Fano manifolds with Kähler-Ricci solitons. This naturally enlarges the moduli space of Fano manifolds with Kähler-Einstein metrics, which was constructed by Odaka and Li-Wang-Xu. We discover a moment map picture for Kähler-Ricci solitons, and give complex analytic charts on the topological space consisting of Kähler-Ricci solitons, by studying differential geometric aspects of this infinite dimensional moment map. Some stacky words and arguments on Gromov-Hausdorff convergence help to glue them together in the holomorphic mann…
We prove that Kahler-Einstein Fano manifolds with finite automorphism groups form Hausdorff moduli algebraic space with only quotient singularities. We also discuss the limits as Q-Fano varieties which should be put on the boundary of its canonical compactification.
We exhibit the first non-trivial concrete examples of Gromov-Hausdorff compactifications of moduli spaces of Kähler-Einstein Fano manifolds in all complex dimensions bigger than two (Fano K-moduli spaces). We also discuss potential applications to explicit study of moduli spaces of K-stable Fano manifolds with large anti-canonical volume. Our arguments are based on recent progress about the geometry of metric tangent cones and on related ideas about the algebro-geometric study of singularities of K-stable Fano varieties.
We prove that the Gromov-Hausdorff compactification of the moduli space of Kahler-Einstein Del Pezzo surfaces in each degree agrees with certain algebro-geometric compactification. In particular, this recovers Tian's theorem on the existence of Kahler-Einstein metrics on smooth Del Pezzo surfaces and classifies the degenerations of such metrics. The proof is based on a combination of both algebraic and differential geometric techniques.
Let $(M,ω)$ be a compact Kähler manifold with negative holomorphic sectional curvature. It was proved by Wu-Yau and Tosatti-Yang that $M$ is necessarily projective and has ample canonical bundle. In this paper, we show that any irreducible subvariety of $M$ is of general type. Moreover, we can extend the theorem to the quasi-negative curvature case building on earlier results of Diverio-Trapani. Finally, we investigate the more general setting of a quasi-projective manifold $X^{\circ}$ endowed with a Kähler metric with negative holomorphic sectional curvature and we prove that such a manifold …
In this note, we prove that there is a canonical continuous Hermitian metric on the CM line bundle over the proper moduli space $\bar{\mathcal{M}}$ of smoothable Kahler-Einstein Fano varieties. The curvature of this metric is the Weil-Petersson current, which exists as a positive (1,1)-current on $\bar{\mathcal{M}}$ and extends the canonical Weil-Petersson current on the moduli space parametrizing smooth Kahler-Einstein Fano manifolds $\mathcal{M}$. As a consequence, we show that the CM line bundle is nef and big on $\bar{\mathcal{M}}$ and its restriction on $\mathcal{M}$ is ample.
We propose a general formula for perturbative-in-alpha' corrections to the Kahler potential on the quantum Kahler moduli space of Calabi-Yau n-folds, for any n, in their asymptotic large volume regime. The knowledge of such perturbative corrections provides an important ingredient needed to analyze the full structure of this Kahler potential, including nonperturbative corrections such as the Gromov-Witten invariants of the Calabi-Yau n-folds. We argue that the perturbative corrections take a universal form, and we find that this form is encapsulated in a specific additive characteristic class …
We construct a Petersson-Weil type Kähler form on the moduli spaces of Higgs bundles over a compact Kähler manifold. A fiber integral formula for this form is proved, from which it follows that the Petersson-Weil form is the curvature of a certain determinant line bundle, equipped with a Quillen metric, on the moduli space of Higgs bundles over a projective manifold. The curvature of the Petersson-Weil Kähler form is computed. We also show that, under certain assumptions, a moduli space of Higgs bundles supports of natural hyper-Kähler structure.
We prove that one can obtain natural bundles of Lie algebras on rank two s-Kähler manifolds, whose fibres are isomorphic to so(s+1,s+1), su(s+1,s+1) and sl(2s + 2,\R). In the most rigid case (which includes complex tori and abelian varieties) these bundles have natural flat connections, whose flat global sections act naturally on cohomology. We also present several natural examples of manifolds which can be equipped with an s-Kähler structure with various levels of rigidity: complex tori and abelian varieties, cotangent bundles of smooth manifolds and moduli of pointed elliptic curves.
In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the orbit space of the closure of the subscheme parametrizing smooth Fano Kähler-Einstein manifolds inside an appropriate Hilbert scheme. In particular, we prove that being K-semistable is a Zariski open condition and establish the uniqueness for the Gromov-Hausdorff limit for a punctured flat family of Fano Kähler-Einstein manifolds. Based on these, we construct a proper scheme parameterizing the S-equivalent classes of $\QQ$-Gorenstein smoothable, K-semistable Fano varieties, and verify various necessary properties to guarantee that it is a good …
We study the natural Kähler metrics on moduli spaces of stable oriented pairs in a very general framework, and we prove a universal formula expressing the Kähler class of such a moduli space in terms of characteristic classes of the universal bundle. We use these results to compute explicitly the volumina of certain Quot spaces.
The twistor space of the moduli space of solutions of Hitchin's self-duality equations can be identified with the Deligne-Hitchin moduli space of $λ$-connections. We use real projective structures on Riemann surfaces to prove the existence of new components of real holomorphic sections of the Deligne-Hitchin moduli space. Applying the twistorial construction we show the existence of new hyper-Kähler manifolds associated to any compact Riemann surface of genus $g\geq2$. These hyper-Kähler manifolds can be considered as moduli spaces of (certain) singular solutions of the self-duality equations.
We show that if a compact complex manifold admits a Kähler metric whose holomorphic sectional curvature is everywhere non positive and strictly negative in at least one point, then its canonical bundle is positive.
In a previous paper, we proved that a projective Kähler manifold of positive total scalar curvature is uniruled. At the other end of the spectrum, it is a well-known theorem of Campana and Kollár-Miyaoka-Mori that a projective Kähler manifold of positive Ricci curvature is rationally connected. In the present work, we investigate the intermediate notion of $k$-positive Ricci curvature and prove that for a projective $n$-dimensional Kähler manifold of $k$-positive Ricci curvature the MRC fibration has generic fibers of dimension at least $n-k+1$. We also establish an analogous result for projec…

The Kähler cone of a compact Kähler manifold carries a natural Riemannian metric, given by the intersection product of its cohomology ring. We give cohomological expressions for the Levi-Civita connection and curvature tensor of this metric, and determine when the metric is complete.
In this paper we first show that on projective manifolds (M, ω), there are holomorphic determinant bundles (in the sense of Knusden-Mumford used by Bismut, Gillet, Soule) which play the role of the geometric quantum bundle, namely one for each input data of a Hermitian holomorphic line bundle L of non-trivial Chern class on a compact Kahler manifold Z (with Todd genus non-zero) and a choice of a geometric quantization of (M, ω). Next we further study the generalization of the vortex equations on Kahler 4-manifold which has been studied earlier by Bradlow. We show that when the Kahler 4-manifol…
Let S be a projective K3 surface. It is proved that the 0-dimensional cusps of the Kahler moduli of S are in one-to-one correspondence with the twisted Fourier-Mukai partners of S. This leads to a counting formula for the 0-dimensional cusps of the Kahler moduli. Applications to rational maps between K3 surfaces with large Picard numbers are given. When the Picard number of S is 1, the bijective correspondence is calculated explicitly.
Phenomenological implications of the volume of the Calabi-Yau threefolds on the hidden and observable M-theory boundaries, together with slope stability of their corresponding vector bundles, constrain the set of Kaehler moduli which give rise to realistic compactifications of the strongly coupled heterotic string. When vector bundles are constructed using extensions, we provide simple rules to determine lower and upper bounds to the region of the Kaehler moduli space where such compactifications can exist. We show how small these regions can be, working out in full detail the case of the rece…
Building on an idea of Borcherds, Katzarkov, Pantev, and Shepherd-Barron (who treated the case $e=14$), we prove that the moduli space of polarized K3 surfaces of degree $2e$ contains complete curves for all $e\geq 62$ and for some sporadic lower values of $e$ (starting at $14$). We also construct complete curves in the moduli spaces of polarized hyper-Kähler manifolds of $\mathrm{K3}^{[n]}$-type or $\mathrm{Kum}_n$-type for all $n\ge 1$ and polarizations of various degrees and divisibilities.
We prove that a smooth complex projective threefold with a Kähler metric of negative holomorphic sectional curvature has ample canonical line bundle. In dimensions greater than three, we prove that, under equal assumptions, the nef dimension of the canonical line bundle is maximal. With certain additional assumptions, ampleness is again obtained. The methods used come from both complex differential geometry and complex algebraic geometry.
Using lattice theory, we establish a one-to-one correspondence between the set of Fourier-Mukai partners of a projective $K3$ surface and the set of 0-dimensional standard cusps of its Kahler moduli. We also study the relation between twisted Fourier-Mukai partners and general 0-dimensional cusps, and the relation between Fourier-Mukai partners with elliptic fibrations and certain 1-dimensional cusps.
