In this paper we describe characteristic properties of the scattering data of the compatible eigenvalue problem for the pair of differential equations related to the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation whose solution is defined in some half-strip $(0<x<\infty)\times[0,T]$, or in the quarter plane $(0<x<\infty)\times(0<t<\infty)$. We suppose that this solution has a $C^{\infty}$ initial function vanishing as $x\to\infty$, and $C^{\infty}$ boundary values, vanishing as $t\to\infty$ when $T=\infty$. We study the corresponding scattering problem for the compatible Zakharov-Shabat system of differential equations associated with the mKdV equation and obtain a representation of the solution of the mKdV equation through Marchenko integral equations of the inverse scattering method. The kernel of these equations is valid only for $x\geq 0$ and it takes into account all specific properties of the pair of compatible differential equations in the chosen half-strip or in the quarter plane. The main result is the collection A-B-C of characteristic properties of the scattering functions given in the paper.
In this paper we study the stability problem for mKdV breathers on the left half-line. We are able to show that leftwards moving breathers, initially located far away from the origin, are strongly stable for the problem posed on the left half-line, when assuming homogeneous boundary conditions. The proof involves a Lyapunov functional which is almost conserved by the mKdV flow once we control some boundary terms which naturally arise.
We prove a full asymptotic stability result for solitary wave solutions of the mKdV equation. We consider small perturbations of solitary waves with polynomial decay at infinity and prove that solutions of the Cauchy problem evolving from such data tend uniformly, on the real line, to another solitary wave as time goes to infinity. We describe precisely the asymptotics of the perturbation behind the solitary wave showing that it satisfies a nonlinearly modified scattering behavior. This latter part of our result relies on a precise study of the asymptotic behavior of small solutions of the mKd…
We explore systematically a rigorous theory of the inverse scattering transforms with matrix Riemann-Hilbert problems for both focusing and defocusing modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equations with non-zero boundary conditions (NZBCs) at infinity. Using a suitable uniformization variable, the direct and inverse scattering problems are proposed on a complex plane instead of a two-sheeted Riemann surface. For the direct scattering problem, the analyticities, symmetries and asymptotic behaviors of the Jost solutions and scattering matrix, and discrete spectra are established. The inverse proble…
In this paper, we obtain the long-time asymptotics of complex mKdV equation via Defit-Zhou method (Non-linear steepest descent method). The Cauchy problem of complex mKdV equation is transformed into the corresponding Riemann-Hilbert problem on the basis of the Lax pair and the scattering matrix. After that Riemann-Hilbert problems are converted through a decomposition of the matrix-valued spectral function and factorizations of the jump matrix for Riemann-Hilbert problem. Finally, by solving the last model problem, the long-time asymptotics of complex mKdV equation are derived.
In this article, we prove that a sum of solitons and breathers of the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation (mKdV) is orbitally stable. The orbital stability is shown in H^2. More precisely, we will show that if a solution of (mKdV) is close enough to a sum of solitons and breathers with distinct velocities at t=0 in the H^2 sense, then it stays close to this sum of solitons and breathers, up to space translations for solitons and space or phase translations for breathers. From this, we deduce the orbital stability of a multi-breather of (mKdV), constructed in [49]. As an application of the orbi…
In a recent paper, Kenig, Ponce and Vega study the low regularity behavior of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS), focusing modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV), and complex Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equations. Using soliton and breather solutions, they demonstrate the lack of local well-posedness for these equations below their respective endpoint regularities. In this paper, we study the defocusing analogues of these equations, namely defocusing NLS, defocusing mKdV, and real KdV, all in one spatial dimension, for which suitable soliton and breather solutions are unavailable. We construct fo…
We present a rigorous theory of a unified and simple inverse scattering transform (IST) for both focusing and defocusing real nonlocal (reverse-space-time) modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equations with non-zero boundary conditions (NZBCs) at infinity. The IST problems for the nonlocal equations with NZBCs are more complicated then ones for the local equations with NZBCs. The suitable uniformization variable is introduced in order to make the direct and inverse problems be established on a complex plane instead of a two-sheeted Riemann surface. The direct scattering problem establishes the a…
We consider the scattering problem of the local perturbation of an open periodic waveguide in the half plane. Recently by Kirsch and Lechleiter, a new radiation condition was introduced in order to solve the unperturbed case. In this paper, with the same radiation condition and an additional assumption we show the well-posedness of the perturbed scattering problem.
In this announcement we present a general and new approach to analyzing the asymptotics of oscillatory Riemann-Hilbert problems. Such problems arise, in particular, in evaluating the long-time behavior of nonlinear wave equations solvable by the inverse scattering method. We will restrict ourselves here exclusively to the modified Korteweg de Vries (MKdV) equation, $$y_t-6y^2y_x+y_{xxx}=0,\qquad -\infty<x<\infty,\ t\ge0, y(x,t=0)=y_0(x),$$ but it will be clear immediately to the reader with some experience in the field, that the method extends naturally and easily to the general class of wave …
We study an inverse acoustic scattering problem in half-space with a probabilistic impedance boundary value condition. The Robin coefficient (surface impedance) is assumed to be a Gaussian random function $λ= λ(x)$ with a pseudodifferential operator describing the covariance. We measure the amplitude of the backscattered field averaged over the frequency band and assume that the data is generated by a single realization of $λ$. Our main result is to show that under certain conditions the principal symbol of the covariance operator of $λ$ is uniquely determined. Most importantly, no approximati…
Consider the linear Boltzmann equation of radiative transfer in a half-space, with constant scattering coefficient $σ$. Assume that, on the boundary of the half-space, the radiation intensity satisfies the Lambert (i.e. diffuse) reflection law with albedo coefficient $α$. Moreover, assume that there is a temperature gradient on the boundary of the half-space, which radiates energy in the half-space according to the Stefan-Boltzmann law. In the asymptotic regime where $σ\to+\infty$ and $1-α\sim C/σ$, we prove that the radiation pressure exerted on the boundary of the half-space is governed by a…
The Half-Space Matching (HSM) method has recently been developed as a new method for the solution of 2D scattering problems with complex backgrounds, providing an alternative to Perfectly Matched Layers (PML) or other artificial boundary conditions. Based on half-plane representations for the solution, the scattering problem is rewritten as a system coupling (1) a standard finite element discretisation localised around the scatterer and (2) integral equations whose unknowns are traces of the solution on the boundaries of a finite number of overlapping half-planes contained in the domain. While…
We consider nonlinear half-wave equations with focusing power-type nonlinearity $$ i \pt_t u = \sqrt{-Δ} \, u - |u|^{p-1} u, \quad \mbox{with $(t,x) \in \R \times \R^d$} $$ with exponents $1 < p < \infty$ for $d=1$ and $1 < p < (d+1)/(d-1)$ for $d \geq 2$. We study traveling solitary waves of the form $$ u(t,x) = e^{iωt} Q_v(x-vt) $$ with frequency $ω\in \R$, velocity $v \in \R^d$, and some finite-energy profile $Q_v \in H^{1/2}(\R^d)$, $Q_v \not \equiv 0$. We prove that traveling solitary waves for speeds $|v| \geq 1$ do not exist. Furthermore, we generalize the non-existence result to the sq…
