We examine the problem of predicting the evolution of solutions of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation when initial data are missing. We use the optimal prediction method to construct equations for the reduced system. The resulting equations for the resolved components of the solution are random integrodifferential equations. The accuracy of the predictions depends on the type of projection used in the integral term of the optimal prediction equations and on the choice of resolved components. The novel features of our work include the first application of the optimal prediction formalism to a nonlinear, non-Hamiltonian equation and the use of a non-invariant measure constructed through inference from empirical data.
This manuscript introduces a fourth-order Runge-Kutta based implicit-explicit scheme in time along with compact fourth-order finite difference scheme in space for the solution of one-dimensional Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation with periodic and Dirichlet boundary conditions, respectively. The proposed scheme takes full advantage of method of line (MOL) and partial fraction decomposition techniques, therefore it just need to solve two backward Euler-type linear systems at each time step to get the solution. Performance of the scheme is investigated by testing it on some test examples and by compa…
We use computer-assisted proof techniques to prove that a branch of non-trivial equilibrium solutions in the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky partial differential equation undergoes a Hopf bifurcation. Furthermore, we obtain an essentially constructive proof of the family of time-periodic solutions near the Hopf bifurcation. To this end, near the Hopf point we rewrite the time periodic problem for the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation in a desingularized formulation. We then apply a parametrized Newton-Kantorovich approach to validate a solution branch of time-periodic orbits. By construction, this solution b…
Numerical computations based on the Wiener Chaos Expansion (WCE) are carried out to approximate the solutions of the stochastic generalized Kuramoto--Sivashinsky (SgKS) equation driven by Brownian motion forcing. In the assessment of the accuracy of the WCE based approximate numerical solutions, the WCE based solutions are contrasted with semi-analytical solutions, and the absolute and relative errors are evaluated. It is found that the absolute error is $O(ςt)$, where $ς$ is small constant and $t$ is the time variabe; and the relative error is order $10^{-2}$ or less. This demonstrates that n…
This paper presents a finite difference method combined with the Crank--Nicolson scheme of the Kuramoto--Sivashinsky equation defined on an expanding circle (\cite{KUY}), and the existence, uniqueness, and second-order error estimate of the scheme. The equation can be obtained as a perturbation equation from the circle solution to an interfacial equation and can provide guidelines for understanding the wavenumber selection of solutions to the interfacial equation. Our proposed numerical scheme can help with such a mathematical analysis.
Models of many engineering and natural systems are imperfect. The discrepancy between the mathematical representations of a true physical system and its imperfect model is called the model error. These model errors can lead to substantial differences between the numerical solutions of the model and the state of the system, particularly in those involving nonlinear, multi-scale phenomena. Thus, there is increasing interest in reducing model errors, particularly by leveraging the rapidly growing observational data to understand their physics and sources. Here, we introduce a framework named MEDI…
In this work we study the asymptotic consistency of the weak-form sparse identification of nonlinear dynamics algorithm (WSINDy) in the identification of differential equations from noisy samples of solutions. We prove that the WSINDy estimator is unconditionally asymptotically consistent for a wide class of models which includes the Navier-Stokes equations and the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation. We thus provide a mathematically rigorous explanation for the observed robustness to noise of weak-form equation learning. Conversely, we also show that in general the WSINDy estimator is only conditio…
