We introduce a countable collection of positivity classes for Hermitian symmetric functions on a complex manifold, and establish their basic properties. We study a related notion of stability. The first main result shows that, if the underlying matrix of coefficients of an entire Hermitian symmetric function has at most k positive eigenvalues, then it can lie in the k-th positivity class only if it is a squared norm. We establish a similar result for Hermitian symmetric functions on the total space of a holomorphic line bundle. Finally we study the positivity classes for a natural one-parameter family of Hermitian metrics on a power of the universal bundle over complex projective space; we obtain sharp information about the parameter values in order to be in the k-th class. The paper closes with some additional information about the case when k is 2, where a nonlinear version of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality arises.
In this note we study a positivity notion for the curvature of the Bismut connection; more precisely, we study the notion of \emph{Bismut-Griffiths-positivity} for complex Hermitian non-Kähler manifolds. Since the Kähler-Ricci flow preserves and regularizes the usual Griffiths positivity we investigate the behaviour of the Bismut-Griffiths-positivity under the action of the Hermitian curvature flows. In particular we study two concrete classes of examples, namely, linear Hopf manifolds and six-dimensional Calabi-Yau solvmanifolds with holomorphically-trivial canonical bundle. From these exampl…
In this article, we propose a definition of Nakano semi-positivity of singular Hermitian metrics on holomorphic vector bundles. By using this positivity notion, we establish $L^2$-estimates for holomorphic vector bundles with Nakano positive singular Hermitian metrics. We also show vanishing theorems, which generalize both Nakano type and Demailly-Nadel type vanishing theorems. As applications, we specifically construct globally Nakano semi-positive singular Hermitian metrics for several bundles, and prove vanishing theorems associated with them.
Quillen proved that repeated multiplication of the standard sesquilinear form to a positive Hermitian bihomogeneous polynomial eventually results in a sum of Hermitian squares, which was the first Hermitian analogue of Hilbert's seventeenth problem in the nondegenerate case. Later Catlin-D'Angelo generalized this positivstellensatz of Quillen to the case of Hermitian algebraic functions on holomorphic line bundles over compact complex manifolds by proving the eventual positivity of an associated integral operator. The arguments of Catlin-D'Angelo, as well as that of a subsequent refinement by …
We prove that the invariant part, with respect to a compact group action satisfying certain condition, of the direct image of a Nakano positive Hermitian holomorphic vector bundle over a bounded pseudoconvex domain is Nakano positive. We also consider the action of the noncompact group $\mathbb{R}^m$ and get the same result for a family of tube domains, which leads to a new method to the matrix-valued Prekopa's theorem originally proved by Raufi. The two main ingredients in our method are Hörmander's $L^2$ theory of $\bar\partial$ and the recent work of Deng-Ning-Zhang-Zhou on characterization…
Given a vector bundle of arbitrary rank with ample determinant line bundle on a projective manifold, we propose a new elliptic system of differential equations of Hermitian-Yang-Mills type for the curvature tensor. The system is designed so that solutions provide Hermitian metrics with positive curvature in the sense of Griffiths-and even in the dual Nakano sense. As a consequence, if an existence result could be obtained for every ample vector bundle, the Griffiths conjecture on the equivalence between ampleness and positivity of vector bundles would be settled.
Let $E$ be a holomorphic vector bundle endowed with a singular Hermitian metric $H$. In this paper, we develop the harmonic theory on $(E,H)$. Then we extend several canonical results of J. Kollár and K. Takegoshi to this situation. In the end, we generalise Nakano's vanishing theorem.
The purpose of this paper is to prove that the Hermitian Curvature Flow (HCF) on an Hermitian manifold $(M,g,J)$ preserves many natural curvature positivity conditions. Following Wilking, for an $Ad\,{GL(T^{1,0}M)}$-invariant subset $S\subset End(T^{1,0}M)$ and a ncie function $F\colon End(T^{1,0}M)\to\mathbb R$ we construct a convex set of curvature operators $C(S,F)$, which is invariant under the HCF. Varying $S$ and $F$, we prove that the HCF preserves Griffiths positivity, Dual-Nakano positivity, positivity of holomorphic orthogonal bisectional curvature, lower bounds on the second scalar …
We study conditions of Hörmander's $L^2$-estimate and the Ohsawa-Takegoshi extension theorem. Introducing a twisted version of Hörmander-type condition, we show a converse of Hörmander $L^2$-estimate under some regularity assumptions on an $n$-dimensional domain. This result is a partial generalization of the 1-dimensional result obtained by Berndtsson. We also define new positivity notions for vector bundles with singular Hermitian metrics by using these conditions. We investigate these positivity notions and compare them with classical positivity notions.
Given an effectively parameterized family of canonically polarized manifolds the Kaehler-Einstein metrics on the fibers induce a hermitian metric on the relative canonical bundle. We use a global elliptic equation to show that this metric is strictly positive. For degenerating families we obtain a singular hermitian metric. Main application is an analytic proof of the quasi-projectivity of the moduli space of canonically polarized manifolds. Further applications in arXiv:1002.4858v2.
We consider a holomorphic family $f:\mathcal{X} \to S$ of compact complex manifolds and a line bundle $\mathcal{L}\to \mathcal{X}$. Given that $\mathcal{L}^{-1}$ carries a singular hermitian metric that has Poincaré type singularities along a relative snc divisor $\mathcal{D}$, the direct image $f_*(K_{\mathcal{X}/S}\otimes \mathcal{D} \otimes \mathcal{L})$ carries a smooth hermitian metric. In case $\mathcal{L}$ is relatively positive, we give an explicit formula for its curvature. The result applies to families of log-canonically polarized pairs. Moreover we show that it improves the general…
The purpose of this paper is to study certain notions of metric positivity for the lowest nonzero piece in the Hodge filtration of a Hodge module. We show that the Hodge metric satisfies the minimal extension property. In particular, this singular Hermitian metric has semi-positive curvature.
Let $M$ and $N$ be two compact complex manifolds. We show that if the tautological line bundle $\mathscr{O}_{T_M^*}(1)$ is not pseudo-effective and $\mathscr{O}_{T_N^*}(1)$ is nef, then there is no non-constant holomorphic map from $M$ to $N$. In particular, we prove that any holomorphic map from a compact complex manifold $M$ with RC-positive tangent bundle to a compact complex manifold $N$ with nef cotangent bundle must be a constant map. As an application, we obtain that there is no non-constant holomorphic map from a compact Hermitian manifold with positive holomorphic sectional curvature …
In this paper, we give complex geometric descriptions of the notions of algebraic geometric positivity of vector bundles and torsion-free coherent sheaves, such as nef, big, pseudo-effective and weakly positive, by using singular Hermitian metrics. As an applications, we obtain a generalization of Mori's result. We also give a characterization of the augmented base locus by using singular Hermitian metrics on vector bundles and the Lelong numbers.
We study the positivity properties of Hermitian (or even Finsler) holomorphic vector bundles in terms of $L^p$-estimates of $\bar\partial$ and $L^p$-extensions of holomorphic objects. To this end, we introduce four conditions, called the optimal $L^p$-estimate condition, the multiple coarse $L^p$-estimate condition, the optimal $L^p$-extension condition, and the multiple coarse $L^p$-extension condition, for a Hermitian (or Finsler) vector bundle $(E,h)$. The main result of the present paper is to give a characterization of the Nakano positivity of $(E,h)$ via the optimal $L^2$-estimate condit…
In this paper we address the problem of studying those Kähler manifolds whose first two coefficients of the associated TYZ expansion vanish and we prove that for a locally Hermitian symmetric space this happens only in the flat case. We also prove that there exist nonflat locally Hermitian symmetric spaces where all the odd coefficients vanish.
In this paper, we study the $L^2$-minimal extension problem for polarized variations of Hodge structures over Hermitian symmetric domains. We are able to explicitly find the $L^2$-minimal extensions using a group-theoretic construction. In particular, this gives a construction without using $L^2$-estimates as in the Ohsawa-Takegoshi type extension theorems. The key ingredient is the Harish-Chandra embedding of Hermitian symmetric domains. The construction of holomorphic sections might be of independent interest since it gives a concrete description in the setting of Hermitian VHS.
In this paper, we establish the rigidity result for local holomorphic volume preserving maps from an irreducible Hermitian manifold of compact type into its Cartesian products.
We give a complete characterization of invariant integrable complex structures on principal bundles defined over hermitian symmetric spaces, using the Jordan algebraic approach for the curvature computations. In view of possible generalizations, the general setup of invariant holomorphic principal fibre bundles is described in a systematic way.
Properties of Hermitian forms are used to investigate several natural questions from CR Geometry. To each Hermitian symmetric polynomial we assign a Hermitian form. We study how the signature pairs of two Hermitian forms behave under the polynomial product. We show, except for three trivial cases, that every signature pair can be obtained from the product of two indefinite forms. We provide several new applications to the complexity theory of rational mappings between hyperquadrics, including a stability result about the existence of non-trivial rational mappings from a sphere to a hyperquadri…
Given a family $f:\mathcal X \to S$ of canonically polarized manifolds, the unique Kähler-Einstein metrics on the fibers induce a hermitian metric on the relative canonical bundle $\mathcal K_{\mathcal X/S}$. We use a global elliptic equation to show that this metric is strictly positive on $\mathcal X$, unless the family is infinitesimally trivial. For degenerating families we show that the curvature form on the total space can be extended as a (semi-)positive closed current. By fiber integration it follows that the generalized Weil-Petersson form on the base possesses an extension as a posit…
Hermitian symmetric manifolds are Hermitian manifolds which are homogeneous and such that every point has a symmetry preserving the Hermitian structure. The aim of these notes is to present an introduction to this important class of manifolds, trying to survey the several different perspectives from which Hermitian symmetric manifolds can be studied.
This is a companion to a recent investigation of K-theoretical invariants for symmetric spaces. We introduce a new class of cycles in K-groups, which are connected to elements of an underlying root lattice. This will be needed for a K-theoretical classification of inductive limits.
