We prove estimates, similar in form to the classical Aleksandrov estimates, for a Monge-Ampere type operator on the Heisenberg group. A notion of normal mapping does not seem to be available in this context and the method of proof uses integration by parts and oscillation estimates that lead to the construction of an analogue of Monge-Ampere measures for convex functions in the Heisenberg group.
This paper introduces in a natural way a notion of horizontal convex envelopes of continuous functions in the Heisenberg group. We provide a convexification process to find the envelope in a constructive manner. We also apply the convexification process to show h-convexity of viscosity solutions to a class of fully nonlinear elliptic equations in the Heisenberg group satisfying a certain symmetry condition. Our examples show that in general one cannot expect h-convexity of solutions without the symmetry condition.
We prove a Hardy-type inequality for the gradient of the Heisenberg Laplacian on open bounded convex polytopes on the first Heisenberg Group. The integral weight of the Hardy inequality is given by the distance function to the boundary measured with respect to the Carnot-Carathéodory metric. The constant depends on the number of hyperplanes, given by the boundary of the convex polytope, which are not orthogonal to the hyperplane $x_3=0$.
In this paper we study viscosity solutions of semilinear parabolic equations in the Heisenberg group. We show uniqueness of viscosity solutions with exponential growth at space infinity. We also study Lipschitz and horizontal convexity preserving properties under appropriate assumptions. Counterexamples show that in general such properties that are well-known for semilinear and fully nonlinear parabolic equations in the Euclidean spaces do not hold in the Heisenberg group.

In this paper we solve a problem raised by Gutiérrez and Montanari about comparison principles for $H-$convex functions on subdomains of Heisenberg groups. Our approach is based on the notion of the sub-Riemannian horizontal normal mapping and uses degree theory for set-valued maps. The statement of the comparison principle combined with a Harnack inequality is applied to prove the Aleksandrov-type maximum principle, describing the correct boundary behavior of continuous $H-$convex functions vanishing at the boundary of horizontally bounded subdomains of Heisenberg groups. This result answers …
We prove geometric $L^p$ versions of Hardy's inequality for the sub-elliptic Laplacian on convex domains $Ω$ in the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^n$, where convex is meant in the Euclidean sense. When $p=2$ and $Ω$ is the half-space given by $\langle ξ, ν\rangle > d$ this generalizes an inequality previously obtained by Luan and Yang. For such $p$ and $Ω$ the inequality is sharp and takes the form \begin{equation} \int_Ω|\nabla_{\mathbb{H}^n}u|^2 \, dξ\geq \frac{1}{4}\int_Ω \sum_{i=1}^n\frac{\langle X_i(ξ), ν\rangle^2+\langle Y_i(ξ), ν\rangle^2}{\textrm{dist}(ξ, \partial Ω)^2}|u|^2\, dξ, \end{e…
We establish a spatial gradient maximum principle for classical solutions to the initial and Neumann boundary value problem of some quasilinear parabolic equations on smooth convex domains.
In this paper we prove a strong maximum principle for certain parabolic systems of equations. In particular, our methods place no restriction on the regularity of the boundary of the convex set in which the system takes its values, and therefore our results hold for any convex set. We achieve this through the use of viscosity solutions and their corresponding strong maximum principle.
In this paper, we establish Liouville type results for semilinear subelliptic systems associated with the sub-Laplacian on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^{n}$ involving two different kinds of general nonlinearities. The main technique of the proof is the method of moving planes combined with some integral inequalities replacing the role of maximum principles. As a special case, we obtain the Liouville theorem for the Lane-Emden system on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^{n}$, which also appears to be a new result in the literature.
This paper is concerned with a PDE-based approach to the horizontally quasiconvex (h-quasiconvex for short) envelope of a given continuous function in the Heisenberg group. We provide a characterization for upper semicontinuous, h-quasiconvex functions in terms of the viscosity subsolution to a first-order nonlocal Hamilton-Jacobi equation. We also construct the corresponding envelope of a continuous function by iterating the nonlocal operator. One important step in our arguments is to prove the uniqueness and existence of viscosity solutions to the Dirichlet boundary problems for the nonlocal…
In this paper we present $L^2$ and $L^p$ versions of the geometric Hardy inequalities in half-spaces and convex domains on stratified (Lie) groups. As a consequence, we obtain the geometric uncertainty principles. We give examples of the obtained results for the Heisenberg and the Engel groups.
In dimension two or three, the weak maximum principal for biharmonic equation is valid in any bounded Lipschitz domains. In higher dimensions (greater than three), it was only known that the weak maximum principle holds in convex domains or $C^1$ domains, and may fail in general Lipschitz domains. In this paper, we prove the weak maximum principle in higher dimensions in quasiconvex Lipschitz domains, which is a sharp condition in some sense and recovers both convex and $C^1$ domains.
For fully nonlinear $k$-Hessian operators on bounded strictly $(k-1)$-convex domains $Ω$ in ${\mathbb R}^N$, a characterization of the principal eigenvalue associated to a $k$-convex and negative principal eigenfunction will be given as the supremum over values of a spectral parameter for which admissible viscosity supersolutions obey a minimum principle. The admissibility condition is phrased in terms of the natural closed convex cone $Σ_k$ in the space of symmetric N by N matrices, which is an elliptic set in the sense of Krylov [Trans. AMS, 1995] and which corresponds to using $k$-convex fu…
In this paper we prove the existence of a maximum for the first Steklov-Dirichlet eigenvalue in the class of convex sets with a fixed spherical hole under volume constraint. More precisely, if $Ω=Ω_0 \setminus \bar{B}_{R_1}$, where $B_{R_1}$ is the ball centered at the origin with radius $R_1>0$ and $Ω_0\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 2$, is an open bounded and convex set such that $B_{R_1}\Subset Ω_0$, then the first Steklov-Dirichlet eigenvalue $σ_1(Ω)$ has a maximum when $R_1$ and the measure of $Ω$ are fixed. Moreover, if $Ω_0$ is contained in a suitable ball, we prove that the spherical shel…
This article is about the convex solution $u$ of the Monge--Ampère equation on an at least 2-dimensional open bounded convex domain with Dirichlet boundary data and nonnegative bounded right-hand side. For convex functions with zero boundary data, an Alexandrov maximum principle $|u(x)| \leq C \operatorname{dist}(x,\partialΩ)^α$ is equivalent to (uniform) Hölder continuity with the same constant and exponent. Convex $α$-Hölder continuous functions are $W^{1,p}$ for $p < 1/(1{-}α)$. We prove Hölder continuity with the exponent $α=2/n$ for $n \geq 3$ and any $α\in (0,1)$ for $n=2$, provided that…
We prove the existence of a continuous $BV$ minimizer with $C^{0}$ boundary value for the $p$-area (pseudohermitian or horizontal area) in a parabolically convex bounded domain. We extend the domain of the area functional from $BV$ functions to vector-valued measures. Our main purpose is to study the first and second variations of such a generalized area functional including the contribution of the singular part. By giving examples in Riemannian and pseudohermitian geometries, we illustrate several known results in a unified way. We show the contribution of the singular curve in the first and …
