Let K denote an algebraically closed field with characteristic 0. Let V denote a vector space over K with finite positive dimension and let A,B denote a tridiagonal pair on V. We make an assumption about this pair. Let q denote a nonzero scalar in K which is not a root of unity. We assume A and B satisfy the q-Serre relations (i) A^3B - [3]A^2BA + [3]ABA^2 - BA^3=0; (ii) B^3A - [3]B^2AB + [3]BAB^2 - AB^3=0, where [3]=(q^3-q^{-3})/(q-q^{-1}). Let (ρ_0, ρ_1,...,ρ_d) denote the shape vector for A,B. We show the entries in this shape vector are bounded above by binomial coefficients. Indeed we show ρ_i is at most (d \atop i) for 0 \leq i \leq d. We obtain this result by displaying a spanning set for V.
We describe the Bockting operator $ψ$ for a tridiagonal pair of $q$-Racah type, in terms of a certain $L$-operator for the quantum loop algebra $U_q(L({\mathfrak {sl}}_2))$.
There is a concept in linear algebra called a tridiagonal pair. The concept was motivated by the theory of $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graphs. We give a tutorial introduction to tridiagonal pairs, working with a special case as a concrete example. The special case is called totally bipartite, or TB. Starting from first principles, we give an elementary but comprehensive account of TB tridiagonal pairs. The following topics are discussed: (i) the notion of a TB tridiagonal system; (ii) the eigenvalue array; (iii) the standard basis and matrix representations; (iv) the intersection numbers; …
A tridiagonal pair is an ordered pair of diagonalizable linear maps on a nonzero finite-dimensional vector space, that each act on the eigenspaces of the other in a block-tridiagonal fashion. We consider a tridiagonal pair $(A, A^*)$ of $q$-Serre type; for such a pair the maps $A$ and $A^*$ satisfy the $q$-Serre relations. There is a linear map $K$ in the literature that is used to describe how $A$ and $A^*$ are related. We investigate a pair of linear maps $B=A$ and $B^* = tA^* + (1-t)K$, where $t$ is any scalar. Our goal is to find a necessary and sufficient condition on $t$ for the pair $(B…
Let $K$ denote a field and let $V$ denote a vector space over $K$ with finite positive dimension. By definition a Leonard pair on $V$ is a pair of linear transformations $A:V\to V$ and $A^*:V\to V$ that satisfy the following two conditions: (i) There exists a basis for $V$ with respect to which the matrix representing $A$ is irreducible tridiagonal and the matrix representing $A^*$ is diagonal. (ii) There exists a basis for $V$ with respect to which the matrix representing $A$ is diagonal and the matrix representing $A^*$ is irreducible tridiagonal. There is a correspondence between Leonard pa…
Motivated by investigations of the tridiagonal pairs of linear transformations, we introduce the augmented tridiagonal algebra ${\mathcal T}_q$. This is an infinite-dimensional associative ${\mathbb C}$-algebra with 1. We classify the finite-dimensional irreducible representations of ${\mathcal T}_q$. All such representations are explicitly constructed via embeddings of ${\mathcal T}_q$ into the $U_q(sl_2)$-loop algebra. As an application, tridiagonal pairs over ${\mathbb C}$ are classified in the case where $q$ is not a root of unity.
The concept of cyclic tridiagonal pairs is introduced, and explicit examples are given. For a fairly general class of cyclic tridiagonal pairs with cyclicity N, we associate a pair of `divided polynomials'. The properties of this pair generalize the ones of tridiagonal pairs of Racah type. The algebra generated by the pair of divided polynomials is identified as a higher-order generalization of the Onsager algebra. It can be viewed as a subalgebra of the q-Onsager algebra for a proper specialization at q the primitive 2Nth root of unity. Orthogonal polynomials beyond the Leonard duality are re…

A family of tridiagonal pairs which appear in the context of quantum integrable systems is studied in details. The corresponding eigenvalue sequences, eigenspaces and the block tridiagonal structure of their matrix realizations with respect the dual eigenbasis are described. The overlap functions between the two dual basis are shown to satisfy a coupled system of recurrence relations and a set of discrete second-order $q-$difference equations which generalize the ones associated with the Askey-Wilson orthogonal polynomials with a discrete argument. Normalizing the fundamental solution to unity…

In this paper we further develop the connection between tridiagonal pairs and the q-tetrahedron algebra $\boxtimes_q$. Let V denote a finite dimensional vector space over an algebraically closed field and let A, A^* denote a tridiagonal pair on V. For $0 \leq i \leq d$ let $θ_i$ (resp. $θ^*_i$) denote a standard ordering of the eigenvalues of A (resp. A^*). Fix a nonzero scalar q which is not a root of unity. T. Ito and P. Terwilliger have shown that when $θ_i = q^{2i-d}$ and $θ^*_i = q^{d-2i}$ there exists an irreducible $\boxtimes_q$-module structure on V such that the $\boxtimes_q$ generato…

We discuss a connection between the algebra $U_q({\mathfrak{sl}_2})$ and the tridiagonal pairs of $q$-Racah type. To describe the connection, let $x,y^{\pm 1},z$ denote the equitable generators for $U_q({\mathfrak{sl}_2})$. Let $U^\vee_q$ denote the subalgebra of $U_q({\mathfrak{sl}_2})$ generated by $x,y^{-1},z$. Using a tridiagonal pair of $q$-Racah type we construct two finite-dimensional $U^\vee_q$-modules. The constructions yield two nonstandard presentations of $U^\vee_q$ by generators and relations. These presentations are investigated in detail.

The $q$-Onsager algebra $\mathcal O_q$ is defined by two generators $A$, $A^*$ and two relations, called the $q$-Dolan/Grady relations. Recently P. Baseilhac and S. Kolb found an automorphism $L$ of $\mathcal O_q$, that fixes $A$ and sends $A^*$ to a linear combination of $A^*$, $A^2A^*$, $AA^*A$, $A^*A^2$. Let $V$ denote an irreducible $\mathcal O_q$-module of finite dimension at least two, on which each of $A$, $A^*$ is diagonalizable. It is known that $A$, $A^*$ act on $V$ as a tridiagonal pair of $q$-Racah type, giving access to four familiar elements $K$, $B$, $K^\downarrow$, $B^\downarro…

Let $K$ denote an algebraically closed field with characteristic 0, and let $q$ denote a nonzero scalar in $K$ that is not a root of unity. Let $A_q$ denote the unital associative $K$-algebra defined by generators $x,y$ and relations x^3y-[3]_q x^2yx +[3]_q xyx^2 -yx^3=0, y^3x-[3]_q y^2xy +[3]_q yxy^2 -xy^3=0, where $[3]_q = (q^3-q^{-3})/(q-q^{-1})$. We classify up to isomorphism the finite-dimensional irreducible $A_q$-modules on which neither of $x,y$ is nilpotent. We discuss how these modules are related to tridiagonal pairs.
