We discuss the relations between the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence and the Gysin map for a multiplicative cohomology theory, on spaces having the homotopy type of a finite CW-complex. In particular, let us fix such a multiplicative cohomology theory h* and let us consider a smooth manifold X of dimension n and a compact submanifold Y of dimension p, satisfying suitable hypotheses about orientability. We prove that, starting the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence with the Poincarè dual of Y in X, which, in our setting, is a simplicial cohomology class with coefficients in h^{n-p}(one-poi…
In this paper we give a geometric description of the general term and the differential of the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence for $B$-bordism. This description is given in terms of bordism classes of maps from stratifolds. We illustrate that with a computational example. We also discuss the case of a general homology theory, where this description is given in terms of the Postnikov sections of the given theory.
In this note, we use Curtis's algorithm and the Lambda algebra to compute the algebraic Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence of the suspension spectrum of $\mathbb{R}P^\infty$ with the aid of a computer, which gives us its Adams $E_2$-page in the range of $t<72$. We also compute the transfer map on the Adams $E_2$-pages. These data are used in our computations of the stable homotopy groups of $\mathbb{R}P^\infty$ in [6] and of the stable homotopy groups of spheres in [7].

We construct the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence (AHSS) for twisted differential generalized cohomology theories. This generalizes to the twisted setting the authors' corresponding earlier construction for differential cohomology theories, as well as to the differential setting the AHSS for twisted generalized cohomology theories, including that of twisted K-theory by Rosenberg and Atiyah-Segal. In describing twisted differential spectra we build on the work of Bunke-Nikolaus, but we find it useful for our purposes to take an approach that highlights direct analogies with classical bundles…

For each odd prime p, we exhibit p-groups G of p-rank two such that (suitably defined) Chern classes of unitary representations of G fail to generate the following rings: 1. The even degree integral cohomology of G; 2. The final page of the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence for G; 3. The Brown-Peterson generalized cohomology of G. It follows that these groups afford counterexamples to conjectures of C. B. Thomas, M. F. Atiyah and P. Landweber.
We introduce a new spectral sequence called the p-chain spectral sequence which converges to the (co-)homology of a contravariant C-space with coefficients in a covariant C-spectrum for a small category C. It is different from the corresponding Atiyah-Hirzebruch type spectral sequence. It can be used in combination with the Isomorphism Conjectures of Baum-Connes and Farrell-Jones to compute algebraic K- and L-groups of group rings and topological K-groups of reduced group C*-algebras.
For every $n\ge 0$, we construct classes in the Brown-Peterson cohomology $BP\langle n \rangle$ of smooth projective complex algebraic varieties which are not in the image of the cycle map from the corresponding motivic Brown-Peterson cohomology. This generalizes the examples of Atiyah and Hirzebruch to all finite levels in the Brown-Peterson tower.
Classical results of Rohlin, Dold, Wall and Atiyah yield two exact sequences that connect the oriented and unoriented (abstract) cobordism groups $Ω_n$ and $\mathfrak{N}_n$. In this paper we present analogous exact sequences connecting the oriented and unoriented cobordism groups of maps with prescribed singularities. This gives positive answer to a fifteen-year-old question posed by Szűcs and has interesting consequences even in the case of cobordisms of immersions.
The $ER(2)$-cohomology of $B\mathbb{Z}/(2^q)$ and $\mathbb{C}P^n$ are computed along with the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence for $ER(2)^*(\mathbb{C}P^\infty)$. This, along with other papers in this series, gives us the $ER(2)$-cohomology of all Eilenberg-MacLane spaces. Since $ER(2)$ is $TMF_0(3)$ after a suitable completion, these computations also take care of that theory.
For every stable model category $\mathcal{M}$ with a certain extra structure, we produce an associated model structure on the pro-category pro-$\mathcal{M}$ and a spectral sequence, analogous to the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence, with reasonably good convergence properties for computing in the homotopy category of pro-$\mathcal{M}$. Our motivating example is the category of pro-spectra. The extra structure referred to above is a t-model structure. This is a rigidification of the usual notion of a t-structure on a triangulated category. A t-model structure is a proper simplicial stable mo…
This is a survey of author's results on weight structures and Voevodsky's motives. Weight structures are natural counterparts of t-structures (for triangulated categories) introduced by the author. They allow to construct weight complexes, weight filtrations, and weight spectral sequences for various cohomology theories. Partial cases of the latter are: 'classical' weight spectral sequences (for singular and etale cohomology), coniveau spectral sequences, and Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequences. All of those are mentioned in the current paper. The details, proofs, and several more results cou…
We consider spectral sequences in smooth generalized cohomology theories, including differential generalized cohomology theories. The main differential spectral sequences will be of the Atiyah-Hirzebruch (AHSS) type, where we provide a filtration by the Cech resolution of smooth manifolds. This allows for systematic study of torsion in differential cohomology. We apply this in detail to smooth Deligne cohomology, differential topological complex K-theory, and to a smooth extension of integral Morava K-theory that we introduce. In each case we explicitly identify the differentials in the corres…

Let T be a torus. We present an exact sequence relating the relative equivariant cohomologies of the skeletons of an equivariantly formal T-space. This sequence, which goes back to Atiyah and Bredon, generalizes the so-called Chang-Skjelbred lemma. As coefficients, we allow prime fields and subrings of the rationals, including the integers. We extend to the same coefficients a generalization of this "Atiyah-Bredon sequence" for actions without fixed points which has recently been obtained by Goertsches and Toeben.

We examine the "homotopy coniveau tower" for a general cohomology theory on smooth k-schemes and give a new proof that the layers of this tower for K-theory agree with motivic cohomology. In addition, the homotopy coniveau tower agrees with Voevodsky's slice tower for $S^1$-spectra, giving a proof of a connectedness conjecture of Voevodsky. The homotopy coniveau tower construction extends to a tower of functors on the Morel-Voevodsky stable homotopy category, and we identify this $P^1$-stable homotopy coniveau tower with Voevodsky's slice filtration for $P^1$-spectra. We also show that the 0th…
Using methods applied by Atiyah in equivariant K-theory, Bredon obtained exact sequences for the relative cohomologies (with rational coefficients) of the equivariant skeletons of (sufficiently nice) T-spaces, T=(S^1)^n, with free equivariant cohomology over the cohomology of BT. Here we characterise those finite T-CW complexes with connected isotropy groups for which an analogous result holds with integral coefficients.
We study the interaction between the EHP sequence and the Goodwillie tower of the identity evaluated at spheres at the prime 2. Both give rise to spectral sequences (the EHP spectral sequence and the Goodwillie spectral sequence, respectively) which compute the unstable homotopy groups of spheres. We relate the Goodwillie filtration to the P map, and the Goodwillie differentials to the H map. Furthermore, we study an iterated Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence approach to the homotopy of the layers of the Goodwillie tower of the identity on spheres. We show that differentials in these spectra…
In previous work with Niles Johnson the author constructed a spectral sequence for computing homotopy groups of spaces of maps between structured objects such as G-spaces and E_n-ring spectra. In this paper we study special cases of this spectral sequence in detail. Under certain assumptions, we show that the Goerss-Hopkins spectral sequence and the T-algebra spectral sequence agree. Under further assumptions, we can apply a variation of an argument due to Jennifer French and show that these spectral sequences agree with the unstable Adams spectral sequence. From these equivalences we obtain i…
Let ($Ω^{\ast}(M), d$) be the de Rham cochain complex for a smooth compact closed manifolds $M$ of dimension $n$. For an odd-degree closed form $H$, there are a twisted de Rham cochain complex $(Ω^{\ast}(M), d+H_\wedge)$ and its associated twisted de Rham cohomology $H^*(M,H)$. We show that there exists a spectral sequence $\{E^{p, q}_r, d_r\}$ derived from the filtration $F_p(Ω^{\ast}(M))=\bigoplus_{i\geq p}Ω^i(M)$ of $Ω^{\ast}(M)$, which converges to the twisted de Rham cohomology $H^*(M,H)$. We also show that the differentials in the spectral sequence can be given in terms of cup products a…
Let X be a "nice" space with an action of a torus T. We consider the Atiyah-Bredon sequence of equivariant cohomology modules arising from the filtration of X by orbit dimension. We show that a front piece of this sequence is exact if and only if the H^*(BT)-module H_T^*(X) is a certain syzygy. Moreover, we express the cohomology of that sequence as an Ext module involving a suitably defined equivariant homology of X. One consequence is that the GKM method for computing equivariant cohomology applies to a Poincare duality space if and only if the equivariant Poincare pairing is perfect.
This paper is dedicated to triangulated categories endowed with weight structures (a new notion; D. Pauksztello has independently introduced them as co-t-structures). This axiomatizes the properties of stupid truncations of complexes in $K(B)$. We also construct weight structures for Voevodsky's categories of motives and for various categories of spectra. A weight structure $w$ defines Postnikov towers of objects; these towers are canonical and functorial 'up to morphisms that are zero on cohomology'. For $Hw$ being the heart of $w$ (in $DM_{gm}$ we have $Hw=Chow$) we define a canonical conser…
