We consider inhomogeneous Bernoulli measures of the form $\prod_{x\inΛ} p_x$ where $p_x$ are prescribed and uniformly bounded above and below away from 0 and 1. A comparison inequality is proved between the Kawasaki and Bernoulli-Laplace Dirichlet forms. Together with a recent result of Caputo on the gap of the Bernoulli-Laplace model, this proves a spectral gap of the correct order L^{-2} on cubes of side length L for the Kawasaki dynamics. The two block estimate of hydrodynamic limits is also obtained.
The boundary problem is considered for inhomogeneous increasing random walks on the square lattice ${\mathbb Z}_+^2$ with weighted edges. Explicit solutions are given for some instances related to the classical and generalized number triangles.
We give a direct rigorous proof of the Kearns--Saul inequality which bounds the Laplace transform of a generalised Bernoulli random variable. We extend the arguments to generalised Poisson-binomial distributions and characterise the set of parameters such that an analogous inequality holds for the sum of two generalised Bernoulli random variables.
In this paper we prove a Lévy-Ottaviani type of property for the Bernoulli process defined on an interval. Namely, we show that under certain conditions on functions $(a_i)_{i=1}^{n}$ and for independent Bernoulli random variables $(\varepsilon_i)_{i=1}^{n}$, $\mathbb{P}(\sup_{t\in [0,1]}\sum^n_{i=1}a_i(t)\varepsilon_i\geq c)$ is dominated by $C\mathbb{P}(\sum^n_{i=1}a_i(1)\varepsilon_i\geq1)$, where $c$ and $C$ are explicit numerical constants independent of $n$. The result is a partial answer to the conjecture of W. Szatzschneider that the domination holds with $c=1$ and $C=2$.
We prove the equivalence of ensembles for Bernoulli measures on $\mathbb{Z}$ conditioned on two conserved quantities under the situation that one of them is spatially inhomogeneous. For the proof, we extend the classical local limit theorem for a sum of Bernoulli independent sequences to those multiplied by linearly growing weights. The motivation comes from the study of random Young diagrams. We discuss the relation between our result and the so-called Vershik curve which appears in a scaling limit for height functions of two-dimensional Young diagrams.
It is shown that the absolute constant in the Berry--Esseen inequality for i.i.d. Bernoulli random variables is strictly less than the Esseen constant, if $1\le n\le 500000$, where $n$ is a number of summands. This result is got both with the help of a supercomputer and an interpolation theorem, which is proved in the paper as well. In addition, applying the method developed by S. Nagaev and V. Chebotarev in 2009--2011, an upper bound is obtained for the absolute constant in the Berry--Esseen inequality in the case under consideration, which differs from the Esseen constant by no more than 0.0…
We obtain a Lundberg-type inequality in the case of an inhomogeneous renewal risk model. We consider the model with independent, but not necessarily identically distributed, claim sizes and the interoccurrence times. In order to prove the main theorem, we first formulate and prove an auxiliary lemma on large values of a sum of random variables asymptotically drifted in the negative direction.
We prove a new Bernstein-type inequality for the log-likelihood function of Bernoulli variables. In contrast to classical Bernstein's inequality and Hoeffding's inequality when applied to the log-likelihood, the new bound is independent of the parameters of the Bernoulli variables and therefore does not blow up as the parameters approach 0 or 1. The new inequality strengthens certain theoretical results on likelihood-based methods for community detection in networks and can be applied to other likelihood-based methods for binary data.
Talagrand's inequality for independent Bernoulli random variables is extended to many interacting particle systems (IPS). The main assumption is that the IPS satisfies a log-Sobolev inequality. In this context it is also shown that a slightly stronger version of Talagrand's inequality is equivalent to a log-Sobolev inequality. Additionally we also look at a common application, the relation between the probability of increasing events and the influences on that event by changing a single spin.
The Euclidean first-passage percolation model of Howard and Newman is a rotationally invariant percolation model built on a Poisson point process. It is known that the passage time between 0 and $ne_1$ obeys a diffusive upper bound: $\mbox{Var}\, T(0,ne_1) \leq Cn$, and in this paper we improve this inequality to $Cn/\log n$. The methods follow the strategy used for sublinear variance proofs on the lattice, using the Falik-Samorodnitsky inequality and a Bernoulli encoding, but with substantial technical difficulties. To deal with the different setup of the Euclidean model, we represent the pas…
We consider a dilute lattice obtained from the usual $\mathbb{Z}^3$ lattice by removing independently each of its columns with probability $1-ρ$. In the remaining dilute lattice independent Bernoulli bond percolation with parameter $p$ is performed. Let $ρ\mapsto p_c(ρ)$ be the critical curve which divides the subcritical and supercritical phases. We study the behavior of this curve near the disconnection threshold $ρ_c = p_c^{\text{site}}(\mathbb{Z}^2)$ and prove that, uniformly over $ρ$ it remains strictly below $1/2$ (the critical point for bond percolation on the square lattice $\mathbb{Z}…
We apply a variation on the methods of Duminil-Copin, Raoufi, and Tassion to establish a new differential inequality applying to both Bernoulli percolation and the Fortuin-Kasteleyn random cluster model. This differential inequality has a similar form to that derived for Bernoulli percolation by Menshikov but with the important difference that it describes the distribution of the volume of a cluster rather than of its radius. We apply this differential inequality to prove the following: The critical exponent inequalities $γ\leq δ-1$ and $Δ\leq γ+1$ hold for percolation and the random cluster m…
A general correlation inequality for level sets of sums of independent random variables using the Bernoulli part with applications to the almost sure local limit theorem
We determine the log-Sobolev constant of the multi-urn Bernoulli-Laplace diffusion model with arbitrary parameters, up to a small universal multiplicative constant. Our result extends a classical estimate of Lee and Yau (1998) and confirms a conjecture of Filmus, O'Donnell and Wu (2018). Among other applications, we completely quantify the "small-set expansion" phenomenon on the multislice, and obtain sharp mixing-time estimates for the colored exclusion process on various graphs.
Let X_1 ,..., X_n be a collection of binary valued random variables and let f : {0,1}^n -> R be a Lipschitz function. Under a negative dependence hypothesis known as the {\em strong Rayleigh} condition, we show that f - E f satisfies a concentration inequality generalizing the classical Gaussian concentration inequality for sums of independent Bernoullis: P (S_n - E S_n > a) < exp (-2 a^2 / n). The class of strong Rayleigh measures includes determinantal measures, weighted uniform matroids and exclusion measures; some familiar examples from these classes are generalized negative binomials and …
Introduced by Lu and Yau (CMP, 1993), the martingale decomposition method is a powerful recursive strategy that has produced sharp log-Sobolev inequalities for homogeneous particle systems. However, the intractability of certain covariance terms has so far precluded applications to heterogeneous models. Here we demonstrate that the existence of an appropriate coupling can be exploited to bypass this limitation effortlessly. Our main result is a dimension-free modified log-Sobolev inequality for zero-range processes on the complete graph, under the only requirement that all rate increments lie …
A time inhomogeneous generalized Mehler semigroup on a real separable Hilbert space ${\mathds{H}}$ is defined through $$ p_{s,t}f(x)=\int_{\mathds{H}} f(U(t,s)x+y)\,μ_{t,s}(dy), \quad t\geq s, \ x\in{\mathds{H}} $$ for every bounded measurable function $f$ on ${\mathds{H}}$, where $(U(t,s))_{t\geq s}$ is an evolution family of bounded operators on ${\mathds{H}}$ and $(μ_{t,s})_{t\geq s}$ is a family of probability measures on $({\mathds{H}}, \B({\mathds{H}}))$ satisfying the time inhomogeneous skew convolution equations $$μ_{t,s}=μ_{t,r}*(μ_{r,s}\circ U(t,r)^{-1}),\quad t\geq r\geq s.$$ This k…
The recently introduced two-parameter Poisson-Dirichlet diffusion extends the infinitely-many-neutral-alleles model, related to Kingman's distribution and to Fleming-Viot processes. The role of the additional parameter has been shown to regulate the clustering structure of the population, but is yet to be fully understood in the way it governs the reproductive process. Here we shed some light on these dynamics by providing a finite-population construction, with finitely-many species, of the two-parameter infinite-dimensional diffusion. The costruction is obtained in terms of Wright-Fisher chai…
We study long-range Bernoulli percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ in which each two vertices $x$ and $y$ are connected by an edge with probability $1-\exp(-β\|x-y\|^{-d-α})$. It is a theorem of Noam Berger (CMP, 2002) that if $0<α<d$ then there is no infinite cluster at the critical parameter $β_c$. We give a new, quantitative proof of this theorem establishing the power-law upper bound \[ \mathbf{P}_{β_c}\bigl(|K|\geq n\bigr) \leq C n^{-(d-α)/(2d+α)} \] for every $n\geq 1$, where $K$ is the cluster of the origin. We believe that this is the first rigorous power-law upper bound for a Bernoulli perco…
